Is there a way to get for example the normal text messaging or music apps to work on the htc hero? Or the motorola messaging app (with the facebook inbox and stuff) to work on it? i went through all the possible roms today and loved the motorola messaging app. i also loved the stock android one too. also if its possible to change the default phone app? and maybe the contacts? i love everything else about the phone. haha. i know some people will be like why did you get a hero? well i really like those apps alot and i love my hero for every other reason. i do know how to use adb and everything. i have tried removing the stock messaging app and putting the stock android one and it doesnt appear. anyone got an idea?
do you have the motorola apps? I would like to test these on Hero.
I have them and would gladly post some, but there is an .odex file to go along with it. if u want to deodexize i think tis called the file then ill gladly post them for you. i just don't fully understand how to do that. i do however have the stock android apps without the .odex in them and it still does not work on the hero after removing the defualt messaging app. anyone got an thoughts onto how to do this? it would be great to have a htc hero mixed with motoblur rom.
That would be awesome! I would atleast like the Happenings app/widget from blur. =)
I am getting a Desire soon and personally I would rather remove Sense UI, but this is not longer possible the easy way.
Can anyone explain if you can remove sense another way? I have heard people say to use Launcher2 or HelixLauncher to get the 3D app drawer and the nexus one launcher. Can anyone confirm this works?
Thanks!
Yep if your install either you can make them default and use them instead but it will still have the Sense theming of all the apps / status bar etc and obv the HTC widgets wont work
ok thanks or the quick reply
so if i use either of these launchers i will not be able to use HTC widgets?
and when/if the desire gets rooted i'll be able to stick a nexus one rom on?
has anyone had any experience with either of these launchers on the desire?
im new to android so i apologise for the noobish questions
Not a problem
Nope you won't be able to use the HTC Widgets... but you can launch the HTC Sense launcher at any time and get access to your widgets though it's a bit of hassle doing that everytime hence i'm gonna stick with htc sense launcher myself.
Both the nexus launcher and helix work great on my Desire, no problems as far as i've been using it.
Not sure about putting then nexus rom though, sorry
thanks for the info.
so installing launcher2 enables the 3D app drawer from the nexus one?
just to clarify lol
Yep the home screen looks like the nexus one and you get the 3D drawer with fades. It looks pretty good! I just wish the widgets still worked then it would be perfect.
thanks again for your quick reply
so where do i download this launcher 2? from the android market when i get the phone?
sorry so many questions!
Not a problem,
Helix you can get from the market but launcher2 you will need to get from somewhere else but if you search these forums you will find one you can install no problem
awesome, thanks again.
one last request: which version did you use? i've searched here and elsewhere and each version is different and im not sure which to use
I'm not sure to be honest, if you know how to check then I can tell you?
Dunno how many other people share my feelings, but I love the AOSP/CM6 browser more than HTC's browser. If one of you kind developers wouldn't mind, I'd love to see the AOSP or CM6 browser ported to Sense or installable on Sense.
So far what I've tried is simply renaming HTC's browser to Browser.apk.bak, and then moving CM6's Browser.apk to my phone. I then rebooted and tried to run it, but it force closed instantly. I've attached the logcat for anyone that is interested.
I'm gonna see if I can install the apk.
edit: no bueno; even after installing it, it force closes when opening.
I've been trying to do the exact opposite but haven't gotten any replies from my posts. I love cm6 but would rather have the htc browser. Good luck
i'm searching for the same thing found a possible that show's u how to do it but it just F/C on me too will be searching too
What I liked about the HTC browser was that you could pinch it. I'm surprised that Google includes this functionality in Android/Froyo but not in their own browser.
So like the 2nd poster, I'd like to see a pinchable (e.g. HTC) browser in CM6.
Hey Guys:
Just trying to understand the app porting better.
Alot of great mods had been created from port of different apk's from other Android devices. I know there is a big difference between ROM that have Sense and no-sense ROMS. Yesterday I tried out the Droid X Messaging App referenced here. It work really well, but I had to uninstall it because of the Force Closing. I think the reason it doesn't work is because the Droid X does not have HTC Sense and its manufactured by Moto, so the app maybe coded differently.
But HTC has a few phones now running Android 2.3. So it would seem even though phones like the Nexus One (Which doesn't have Sense) should be almost coded along the same lines as a HTC phone running Sense, right? Yet alot of the apps don't run very well on Sense based ROMS. Now I know most people hate Sense, but I think its a useful app. I use Sense while I'm work and Launcher Pro on the weekends and evenings (yeah I know it sounds crazy. I know). But I really want to add a few ported 2.3 apps like messaging, etc.
Currently running SprintLovers Rom cause its the closet to stock. But I would like to mod it a bit.
So what I'm wondering is how come there aren't more ported apps available for Sense based Roms?

I could be wrong, but I think it's because of how much the framework differs. I've never tried the messaging app that you referenced, but is it all black? If you're looking for a messaging app that is all blacked out, with white font, the here is a modded one. It is the stock htc messaging app, but themed black, made by JsChirf.

No problem man. I have had no issues with that app at all, and have been using it for a good while now. MMS works fine with it, but it's the same as the stock app. I've never seen how they come through with the Droid x app.
So guys ... what do you think .... which is the best......
Old market is faster and not as crowded.
I reckon the new market will eventually come into its own for the newer generation of smart phones.
eventually................
Before, I could look at my applications/updates in one click from main interface. Now I need 2 screen taps: menus -- > My Applications
Also, from time to time, it reverts to another secondary account: even more taps as I need to change account
It s**ks really, I hate the new market
I think the new market really sucks.......so complicated.......so slow........so grey........
mmmmmmm........i don like it.........
today i encounterd a problem which is common with sgs and new market, that u cant download files over 30mb. that made me revert to old market and now everything works flawless. hate new market
I believe that most of the people hate the new market......
I agree with that. Although it's much better on more powerful phones (sgs2, touchpad) in my experience.
I also have that freaking annoying bug where it swaps to your other google account
New market is crap. Use it to download " OldMarket".
Older version. Loads a lot faster, and not as cluttered IMO...

Old market is better..
Hope word doesn't spreads to Apple trolls
Otherwise another OS war on Tech Sites
I tend to point chrome on my PC to market.android.com when I need to install apps, which means I use the market app once every third month or so. New, old.. all the same to me.

I do not use too often market so for me new one is not too bad and it is not too much slower than old one

Ha Ha. I agree completely
Old market was way better.
Not a fan of those windows phone tiles alike. They never offer anything usefull anyway. Also find it much harder to actually find stuff if i'm going through categories (as opposed to using search directly).
Performance wise, ever since i installed cyanogen 7.1 stable(on a SGS), this improved to nearly lag-free (not including the time it takes to download images). Not sure if it's just cyanogen that's faster or if this is a modified market version, or something else. Used to be really terrible with other roms though.
Simplicity to use still speaks louder and is more than enough to make me want to go back to the "OldMarket".
I've tried both, and I definitely prefer the Old market.
The old market loads a lot quicker, and I've noticed that the new market sometimes hangs when trying to install apps via the phone.
Usually I do the same thing that mickeko does, I'll browse the Market on PC then download the apps to my phone via the PC. Still, its nice to have the best version of the market running on your phone (in my case 2.3.6).
tried both.....the old one is working and the new one is eye candy but extremely slooooooooooooooow
