[Q] Lost Wifi using Zedomax kernel - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

Just got my device today. Coming from an Evo this seemed much easier to root. I followed the steps for installing Zedomax kernel via odin. Turns out wifi is borken. Flashed the so called stock rom acs-eb30-stock-kernael-pulled.tar. Nothing happen other then the ! removed form the boot.
Can any one help?

Had the same problem. Find LoStKernelExp-1.0.0.8tar.md5. not sure where I found it, but wifi works with it.
Check out the wiki.

Thanks, I will try it later. Hope this works.

I found that tar file on chris41g.devphone.org. Still no Wifi. This really sucks.

Thanks to qbking77 my wifi is back. FYI For anyone else don't use zedomax kernels... they don't work for peoples phones.

The Zedomax was from a while ago. Use Chris's or Rogue Desperado if you want overclock

Mind sharing how you fixed this? I have the same problem.

Zedomax kernel wifi fix
For anyone else with this issue, flashing back to the stock kernel didn't work for me. Doing a full wipe and flashing back to the stock rom (and in the process unrooting the phone) via Odin finally did the trick. Follow Qbking77's video on how to do this and to get the stock rom files. Obviously, I don't recommend flashing the Zedomax kernel.

throw me a bone man ,…please

Not sure why but the .tar file is followed by a .md5 extention, so I just removed it and it became a .tar, just for others to know, thanks
the md5 extension is so you know it hasnt been messed with, and so you know the download is not corrupt...
odin flashes md5s and checks the downloads...
What would be the benefit of flashing this versus your other similar kernel? Sorry if this is a stupid question....
Thank you so much. This is perfect. Do have a question. Does this have a new version of cwm or the same one from yesterday? I ask cause the back soft button wasn't working and the storage mounts were reversed. Just checking to see if that has been fixed.

It is the same just without root and busybox. He made it for those of us that prefer having root controlled at the system level versus the kernel. You don't lose anything either way. If you use this you have to make sure you are running an already rooted rom. There is less conflict by doing this since most, if not all, roms are already rooted.

Once again thanks for you help. One last stupid question before I retire from stupidity, but how do I know which way I am rooted? I thought the only way to root was FROM the kernel. I ask because I'm specifically on midnight rom v2 and have no clue which way I'm rooted.
Is there any way someone could upload a mirror to a different site? I'm wanting to flash this but I'm at work and my company is blocking the site that the link is for. If you can that would be awesome if not, no big deal. I'll try and get it when I get home.
Edit: Nevermind. Managed to get it from my phone.
I can up it to megaupload if that helps Tiffany.

Yes you will keep root cause the rom is rooted. As long ad the rom is rooted the kernel doesn't need to. be.

Just curious, if someone has flashed chris' previous kernel, what benefit is there supposed to be? Is it not the same stock kernel with some tweaks? Especially if you're concerned with losing root. Not singling anyone out, just curious as to the rationale.

Because kernels that have forced copying of root & busybox cause issues when you start using complete custom ROMs because they overwrite files that are already included. Plus if your including a custom recovery, what the point of including root, etc when the user can now flash what they want?
Also, Chris, the recovery you have included in this won't mount the internal storage or even make a backup to it or recover, it only wants to use the external sd card and since I don't use one because of the delay it causes coming from sleep, I can't do anything except test flash stuff
I flashed this around noon and once my phone rebooted, I updated my 'profile' under 'about phone'. Everything seemed fine, an hour later...I had a LOS, rebooted and got it back, an hour later, same thing...LOS. Rebooted and I updated the profile again, it's fine for now.
Do we have to update profile every time we do a reboot??
Didn't have any issues when in stock.

Tired of the bugs on this phone. Please help

OK this phone used to be great coming from a HTC hero but now I'm really starting to regret the purchase.
I'm fully stock with a EK02 Rom. You have to excuse my ignorance as I don't know what the different radios do. Anyway I'm sick of the phantom LOS and needing to reboot my phone only to find I missed texts. In addition the sound bug when trying to play games on rare occasions is just as annoying.
Are there any roms / radios that fix these issues? What about CM?
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA App
Flash either the EL26 or the EL29 radios and see if that fixes your issues, it did mine.
Is this just to fix the Los issue? Do I need to be rooted for this?

Yes, you need root to flash modems, kernels, ROMS, etc.. Shouldn't be difficult to do that, takes a few minutes.

definitely flash a new radio man. el26 gave me bad battery life. I am now on stock rooted el29 rom radio and rogue el29 kernel and no problems here!

I think if I'm going to go through the process of flashing a new modem I might as well root my phone as well. As far as I recall the only issue people speculated was root caused then LOS but if I already have that issue what does it matter
That said when I rooted my old hero I never used oden before. The little I have read suggests that oden will increase a flash counter that may or may not be looked at if your phone has an issue. I also thought I read there is a new rooting method that doesn't use oden and will allow me to keep everything stock? I'm not sure what the difference is? One installed a different kernal or something like that? And different kernals give different behaviors.
One thing I did before was a nand backup right after root so I could completely restore my phone. I guess I have some reading to do.

Flashing back to GB Rom from ICS

UPDATE: If you're currently on an ICS rom and need to go back to a GB rom, just follow the instructions on this page. I chose to use the "SPH-D710.EL29_CL852097_ROOTED-oc-sfx.exe" self extract file, which clears all user data. This didn't wipe my pictures and videos that were on the internal memory. This will take you back to a rooted EL29 GB rom. If you want CWM, you can then follow the instructions provided by the amazing QBKing77 in his walk-through video. Thanks to everyone below for their help in clarifying the process!
Hey guys,
There have been a lot of bricking stories going from ICS back to GB roms, so I want to be absolutely sure I understand what I need to do in order to get back to a GB rom. It sounds like my only option is to use ODIN to install a GB rom, correct? I'm currently on the unofficial CM9 test build, but want to get to the CM9 alpha 1 rom.
Do I basically follow the instructions in this thread using the one-click file that resets user data? This will completely wipe my phone and get me back to the rooted EL29 rom, which is GB based, correct?
Sorry for the stupid question, but I hope that once this gets answered, others will be able to find this info helpful as well. Thanks!!

Of course!
Guys,
Thanks again for your help. I went ahead and ran sfhub's one-click ODIN using the SPH-D710.EL29_CL852097_ROOTED-oc-sfx.exe self extracting file, and everything went smoothly. I'll update the op for future reference.
You are doing it right. sfhub actually spent the time and put together a one-click that includes CWM! "SPH-D710.EL29_CL852097_ROOTED_CWM-OneClick.exe" [http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=23521848&postcount=377] when we started having all the bricking. As was already mentioned using his one-clicks are the absolute safest. And as was also mentioned they work in Mobile Odin, though I would rather use the PC, it's good to have that option incase the USB gets 'locked' out. Just read the part about the triangle and how to remove it. That Dude is a life saver. Thanks sfhub and all you other devs.

Calkulin's Mod Questions

What are the changes from version 2.9 to v3 that some people arn't liking? I hear some people like v2.9 better.
In Calkulin's mods, are the bloatware apps and running services already removed, or is that up to each person to do?
Thanks.
Personally I don't see much of a difference in the 2.9.x to 3.0 releases. I run 3.0 and get great battery life using the El29 stock repack kernel and modem (although this week I'm going to be testing EL13 stock repack kernel and modem). And to answer the bloatware question, Calkulin has a script posted that de-bloats the ROM, as well as "bare" releases. Both options work well. Cheers!

Yes, I'm seeing those scripts in this thread. They look helpful. After you run the Wipe script then flash the rom, do you do a first time boot, then go back into the system menu and run the de-bloat script? What is the order of running these? It's my impression that you can run his added scripts at anytime, right?
Thanks.
What I normally do when flashing is run the format all script twice (the second time just for my own peace of mind!), flash the ROM and then boot up for the first time. Just to make sure everything's looking good ill usually just fool around with the fresh install for a few minutes, then power down and run the debloat script. Reboot after that, and check everything out. From there on out when flashing scripts (like tdunhams tweaks or other mods) I always flash one script, boot up, and do some basic testing to make sure everything went smooth. I've heard horror stories of people flashing a bunch of scripts at once and then having issues and having to start from scratch anyway. Let us know how you make out.

Thanks, that is helpful. The last piece I am missing is how to do the wipes and rom loads. I've been into the Samsung system menu (where I flashed the official ICS load I got). Will the stock samsung system menu allow me to Wipe and Calkulin's rom flash, or do I need ClockWork?
Sorry I had assumed you were already using a custom recovery. So you are running stock ics pushed from Sammy right now? Basically in order to do all this fancy business you need to have a kernel with a touch recovery. If you're running stock ics right now, I think its safe to say you can Odin (from your PC) the EL26 stock kernel repacked with cwm and then flash Calukins rom zip from there. Not sure of you necessarily need to go to EL26 first but I just like to play it on the safe side when dealing with ics. I believe you could also use one of the one click flashes found in the dev forums and then flash Calukins rom from there (assuming its a rooted one click package). Hopefully this makes sense.
And just be careful if you do want to return to ics after a while, you should always flash the EL26 stock kernel when flashing to ics. I believe the bricking issue has been solved and its pretty safe to flash ics with other kernels but nothing wrong with playing on the safe side.

This link should bring you to the One-click flasher for EL26 stock rooted (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1416477&highlight=one+click). After flashing that, you need to get a CWM kernel (http://kernelrepo.chris41g.org/default.asp?startFolder=\Recovery+Kernels\GB\Chris41g\Stock+CWM\TAR) so grab the EL26 .tar file and flash via Odin. Once that's done, you should have a CWM recovery with a rooted phone, allowing you to flash Calukin's rom zip via CWM. I would have linked earlier but I was on my phone not the PC and it's a pain to grab links on the run!
If you aren't too familiar with Odin, no worries it's very easy to do. I don't have time to hammer it all out right now but I'm sure wherever you find the download link for Odin, there will be a guide on how to use it right along side it.
With all of that said, you could probably follow the same steps to flash but while using any of the other One-click versions (EG30, EL29, etc etc) as long as you are dealing with GB roms and kernels ONLY. I know I said it before, but just to reiterate in case you are new to all this, use the EL26 as your starting point when flashing back to ics at any point. It's probably just me being super careful but I'd rather that then end up with a very expensive paperweight! Keep us posted, I'll try and check the thread later on.
Edit: I guess there are other ways to get CWM rocking on the GB platforms coming from a simply stock rooted system (via auto-root) but I just find it easier to flash the kernel right over top the old one, it keeps it simple. And not to belittle you or anything, but if you are new to flashing roms and the likes, I would REALLY recommend watching some videos on how to do everything. QBking has some GREAT tutorials on youtube to show you the basics (most importantly how to NOT brick your phone) as well as many other videos found on this forum and the ACS forums...check them out! Is there a reason you suggest going back to EL26?
Rolling back to GB from ICS, I was going to go this route:
Step 1: EL29
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1433101
Step 2: Then Apply CWM with option C (EL29) here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1342728
Step 3: Use Caulks format all script 2 times.
Step 4: Then apply the Caulk v3:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1332837&page=963
Did I miss anything?
No you should be in the clear. Only reason I suggested EL26 was because when ics dropped pre-source, to avoid bricking you'd always go back to EL26 and flash from that stock repack kernel. You should be OK with the route you're taking though.

Rooted with Zedomax + Caulkins Rom. Constantly rebooting.

Reboots usually about 10+ times a day. During calls etc. Any way to remedy this?
Note: it doesn't restart from the very beginning it freezes, goes black then boots up the lock screen all media connects are restarted etc.
From the limited amount of research I've done the zedomax method for rooted is no longer used? (Currently I get the yellow exclamation point at reboot).
What do I need to do (in lame mans terms) to get my phone back to normal?
TIA!
Easiest way is to one click Odin. I'm not sure which your on. I'm assuming GB. So you can one click Odin to stock el29+ root. Or if you want one click Odin to FF18 or FH13 to upgrade to ICS. And if your on ICS you can use triangle away to get rid of yellow triangle on the splash screen.

Using ZedoMax kernel is your problem from the get go. Even Zedomax would have a good laugh at that. Its an OLD OLD kernel.
EG30 and EK02 can be rooted via usb with the zerg exploit and sfhubs auto root made that easy. Easiest way with EL29 or the newer ICS firmwares as well is just to flash a prerooted one click. But you can always odin a kernel with custom recovery and flash super user.

There's been quite a few new epic users to the forums lately as their evo phones were replaced with this one for a replacement thru sprint. Quite a few old threads on rooting, kernels and themes have been resurrected in the last 30 days or so as a result.

Other relevent info is I am using a Mac and can't open .exe files. Is there a work around? . . . and do I need to unroot before doing this one click odin or will this just replace my old root while preserving my info?
Thanks.

Use Heimdall to flash tars then. Grab the one for FH13 if you want the latest official ICS or EL29 if you want the last GB out. Sfhubs one click threads have a second post with the tars as for FH13 dunno how Garwynn and rwilco have their stuff arranged.

I would like ICS. I haven't done any rooting/ flashing in a long time. Is there anyway you'd be able to explain so that an idiot like me could understand please?
(I looked at sfhubs page and got really confused)

Thanks, I've seen his videos. I linked to it in my previous post however he doesn't have detailed instructions for Mac users.

You have CWM recovery right?
If so copy Calks rom onto your phone, if you don't still have it there.
Download the EL29 zip file to your phone from http://rwilco12.androidfilehost.com...y Kernels/GB/Rogue Recovery/Stock Repacks/ZIP.
Instll that zip from recovery and reboot back into recovery.
Install Calks Rom again.
You should be fixed now.
If you prefer to go with FH13 (ICS):
Download the AGAT_v0.5.4.zip file to your phone from http://rwilco12.androidfilehost.com...y Kernels/ICS/Agats Source Built Recovery/ZIP
Copy this file to your phone http://d-h.st/Txi
Install the FH13 Rom from recovery.
Instll the AGAT_v0.5.4.zip while still in recovery.
You should be fixed on FH13 now.
If you want the Modem you can download the FH13 modem zip from here and flash it from recovery. http://rwilco12.androidfilehost.com/ModemSite/?dir=MODEMS/ICS/ZIP

Thanks for being my hero. Everything works (so far). And after some trial and error even the wireless tether works. Now if I could just get my iPad to link to my wifi I'd be golden...
Thanks again!

No problem. I am partial to the Sprint hotspot hack myself. In the dev section by rejulus22.

Bump.
Different issue:
1. I keep getting a FI27 Software Update reminder. I am able to clear it out of my notifications but 5-10 mins it's back again. It will interrupt whatever it is I am doing at the moment.
2. Is there a separate current radio I can download? My gps can never find my current location, rendering the turn by turn feature useless since I can't use it.
Any thoughts?
TIA

The link given earlier to download the modems contains the FI27 modem. You could flash that and it may get rid of the update reminder.
