[Q]Ok, I quit... Cant root!!! NEED HELP!!! - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

Hi guys! Im coming from HTC EVO... This is my 1st Samgsung, I got it yesterday. Not my 1st time rooting and bricking . I've been reading days ago to understand before trying to root. So I feel prety confident to give a try.
OK, this is it. I 1st rooted using ODIN. I got root, download Rom Manager to flash CWM, but instead holding volume up and ON button, I did it with volume down. So after getting what I think was some kind of soft brick, I went and unroot with ODIN.
I tried the same again, blah blah... but this time I used the e4gtauto. I got root again, and CWM also. But after everithing seem OK, when I tried to flash a ROM, I get an error on CWM, cant mount sd card... Also tried flashing on Roam Manager app, and it says something like cant get permissions, even when I still got a SU app installed.
Also, after each unroot, the phone keep telling system update... I hit install. This is to update to EK02?? When I hit install, it start installing, and always got an fail error, and Android with a triangle, some kind of android recovery says on top. Phone dont wana reboot, so I unroot AGAIN with ODIN!!!
Im right now with EG30.
WHAT THA HELL IM DOING WRONG!?!?!?!?! or WHAT IM NOT DOING!?!?!?
Please help me. I really apreciate if anyone can point me on the right direction.
Sorry for the long post. And thank you for taking time to read.

Go to Odin and point it to this file:
http://www.multiupload.com/4714QC3MEJ
MAKE SURE YOU HIT "PDA" in ODIN, and NOT "PHONE" when pointing it to the file above. It'll give you the latest rooted version as of now (EL13, not EG30). and itll wipe everything to make sure w.e you did wrong before will not affect you now!
EDIT: Actually that file is a .exe that extracts all the files wherever you put it. Here's the guide i got the file from: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1394332

Ok Loco! Im downling now. After getting root with odin, I'll have to flash CWM via Rom Manager, right?

DO NOT USE ROM MANAGER, for CWM just flash this through ODIN after you flashed that EL13 rooted package:
http://chris41g.devphone.org/EpicTouch/Stock Repack/EL13/StockCWM-EL13.tar.md5
^that one is pure stock kernel with just CWM implemented (i personally prefer stock and stable )
or
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1349573
^kernel is also stock but also allows for boot animations and such
make sure this is flashed through PDA in odin, and make sure you have all your samsung drivers installed just in case if ODIN failed for you before

Aight! As soon I finish downloading, I'll post the results. Thank you men!

OK, I did everything. It was all good. But still on Roam Manager, cant mount sd card. Im stuck again!
OK, downlaod a root check app, and says that I dont have root! What Im missing!!??

Are you selecting "apply .zip from sd card" or "apply .zip fron internal sd"?
If you don't have an external sd card, you need to be using the internal option in CWM or it will awlays give you an error that it can't mount the sd.

FINALLY!!!!! I GOT IT!!! THANK YOU A LOT!!!!

Sorry, didn't get a chance to check back. Hope all is well

My friend coming from the OG Evo I am sure you learned not to use Rom Manager for stuff like recoveries. I know you may have gotten away with it before but to stay clear of possible bricking and flashing errors I say do it without Rom Manager. Plus you also learn a thing or two along the way.

This.
I came from the EVO 4G. I didn't realize how much I was relying on ROM Manager. I've learned more in the past week rooting and flashing stuff on my new E4GT than I did the whole time I had the EVO. Totally worth it.

Is this a problem or is it not a problem? Rooting.

I don't want to make this long so here goes. I don't have a clue what happened but it some how worked.
I just wanted to root my phone so I went to this site and followed the instructions to the key.
http://htcevohacks.com/htc-evo-hacks/how-to-root-htc-evo-4g-new/
I had problems with step 10 and I dont even know if i properly saved the wimax what ever the hell that is/
When the bootloader came up it would just load from the sdcard and load up the " PC36IMG.zip" and and update.
I was never able to do step 11.
I kept going back and forth trying to repeat the step and that z4 app would never let me unroot and i repeatedly rerooted.
So I decided to reset my phone and sdcard hoping this would reset the whole process.
I then found something else to root. This website.
http://theunlockr.com/2010/07/20/how-to-root-the-htc-evo-4g-unrevoked-method/
Unfortunatley I didn't follow the instructons right because I am a damn fool.
So I went to straight running the unrevoked app without running the modified Android USB driver. Wierd thing is that I already got that superuser ninja looking guy in my apps. I was able to use wifi tether.
Now here is the thing, I was never able to do that recovery thing with that little black screen with green letters. It seems that I skipped that step to recover something. How can I redo that?
When I went to ROM manager and tried to install a ROM it says "flashing an update package on a recovery other than clockworkmod recovery may not work properly. Proceed?"
Does that mean it won't work? Im afraid to push Proceed.
Hope I made sense for someone to help. Its a giant mess... I wish I could start all over...
Boot into the bootloader and accept the update and reboot, that'll install a recovery for you.
Also, you're using the paid version?

Dude I love you. What about when loading the ROM from ROM manager, "flashing an update package on a recovery other than clockworkmod recovery may not work properly. Proceed?"
What is clockworkmod recovery, what does it do, where do I get it?
Oh and yes i am using the paid version, why should I get my 5 bucks back?

Clockwork recovery is just different from amon_ra. You can go into rom manager and click flash clockwork recovery, if you wish. And that message means like flashiing clockwork on amon_ra , you may get errors. Also, you can use clockwork on amon_ra, as to still download roms, but you can't backup with it.
I also want to add ever since I tried the root, it took my phone back to the stone age. I los the newest htc update with swype. Why is that?
The Rom Mananger isnt working for me either. It wont load any ROMS. IT says downloading but nothing ever happens, how long does it take to download a ROM?
I downloaded this OTA SUPERSONIC 3.70 and it wont load either? Whats going on .
I really need some major help!

I'm not sure why you would root your EVO without knowing anything about the process or at the very least the terminology, but it's not too late. I recommended that you go and read and get a better feel for the process.
There are at least a dozen threads on the subject. Here's one to start you off Helpful Threads.

[Q] Bad first time experience trying to root HTC EVO 4G

So I tried to root my EVO last night, and i stayed up til 2am doing so. I finally got it rooted and then tried to apply a theme on my phone. But, i think it was a theme for a diff. phone. I dont kno if that matters, but i dont think i applied the correct .zip file. That **** totally ****ed my phone in the ass and now it WILL NOT load past the white screen when I first turn my phone on; The "HTC EVO 4G" screen. I tried to go into BOOTLOADER, go to RECOVERY and recover my "stock ROM", by the way, FAIL..!! It didnt work and now i have no EVO. Is there anything i could possibly do to my phone to get it working back to normal. I already ordered a new phone but i figured since i'll be stuck with a piece of ****, then i might as well experiment with it. ANY SUGGESTIONS ANYBODY..??!!
You can go into the bootloader and then select clear storage, which performs a factory reset on the phone. Or try reflashing the rom again, making sure its for the evo.
Can you succesfully boot into your bootloader screen?

Damn, you already ordered a new phone?! Evo's are hard to brick. If you can still get to your bootloader, you're not bricked. What happens when you select recovery? Do you boot into recovery, or does it hang? If you're lucky enough to still get into recovery, then you probably just need to reflash a rom, any rom. If you don't have recovery, but can get to the bootloader, and have s-off, then you just need to reflash a recovery. You can do that from the bootloader, (providing you are indeed s off). Load a PC36IMG of Amon Ra's recovery to the main directory of your sd card. You'll need to take your sd card out, and put it in a different phone or in a card reader in order to transfer the file. Once it's on the main directory of your sd card, and you're positive that it's named exactly PC36IMG, put the card back in your phone. Boot to the bootloader, at this point it should scan and ask you to update. Select volume up to choose yes. That'll flash Amon Ra recovery V2.3. Once that finishes, select 'recovery' from the bootloader. That should boot you to Amon Ra. From that point, you can flash a rom using the recovery. You'd just need to load a rom to the sd card, if you don't have one on there already. Hope that helps.
And if you're bootloader is not S off, and shows S on, don't do any of the above. At that point, you'd want to run an RUU or flash a PC36IMG of a stock rom, (same directions as flashing the PC36IMG from above). That will flash you back to stock, unrooted. At that point, you could try rooting again if you want to. FInd RUU's here. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=884060&highlight=hboot-0.97+ruu
EDIT: the PC36IMG I attatched is Amon Ra recovery, V2.3, if you should need a recovery. And damn, when I started replying, no one had responded. I'm so slow!

Okay. You said you did what I suggested before, but what part? Did you get the amon RA recovery installed, or did you run the RUU. If you got the recovery installed, and you're s off, then you just need to flash a rom. Go to the development section and pick one out, download it, and put it on the main directory of your SD card. Then boot into recovery. Wipe data, cache, and dalvik cache. select flash zip from SD card, and then choose the rom that you put on the card. Let it flash. When its done, reboot the phone. If we aren't on the same page, let me know. I'm on the road right now, so I'm sorry if delayed. Teh roxx will take care of ya.

There's no need for negative sarcasm. We all start somewhere, and a good foundation is the start.
1. Go > http://mirror.teamdouche.net/?device=supersonic download the latest nightly
2. Go > http://goo-inside.me/gapps/latest/7/universal/ ; download the latest google apps
3. Place both files on sdcard
4. Boot into recovery, then from the main clockwork menu, wipe factory/data, cache, then scroll down to advanced, the wipe the dalvik cache, press return/go back
5. Go into install zip, choose zip, first install the cm7 nightly 30 rom, wait for it to install, click go back.
6. From the main menu, wipe your cache, then dalvik cache from the advanced menu, go back
7. Go back to install zip, choose zip, now install the gapps [google apps], let it install, then go back
8. Reboot the phone and you should be good to go.

i don't think so. the stock roms are rfs only.
Be sure to put the syndicate rom or another ec05 rom on the phone's sd card before converting to ext4 with clockword mod recovery 3. if you already converted by accident use odin to odin back to ec05 with ext4 and and root precooked in. before you do this back up your data with clockwork or something else if you can still boot into android.

I you want to root and keep the stock rom you can use one of the pre-rooted odin files. This will wipe your phone and take it back to stock rooted EC05 with RFS.
Here are instructions and links to the pre-rooted ec05 odin

1) Download Odin
2) Download and Install Windows Drivers 32bit | 64 bit
3) Download the EC05_DXC.tar.rar
4) Extract the "EC05_DXC.tar.rar" file to a folder on your hard drive to get the necessary "EC05_DXC.tar.md5" file located inside.
5) Shut down your device
6) Boot into download mode (Hold number 1 on physical keyboard and press power)
7) Start Odin
8) Plug in device via USB cable to computer, (if it's done right you should see a yellow Com device light up in one of the rectangular boxes)
9) Place the "EC05_DXC.tar.md5" in the PDA slot on Odin
10) Check Auto Reboot ONLY
12) Click start and this should only take about 2-3 minutes to complete.
13) Wait for the green light in the Com device/rectangular box and the "Pass" to show.
When completed it should reboot into Froyo EC05, with a fresh system.

OK, do you have a card reader? If so, pull the battery out of the phone, download the EC05 flashable ROM with root from the thread below. Copy it to your sd card. Put the card back in. Boot by holding camera, volume down, and power. Should be orange lettered screen. Scroll down to install zip from sd card, choose that, then choose zip from sd card, then choose the file you just put on and install it.
This should put a prerooted EC05 system on your phone.

Don't use ROM manager. It does not work properly on the Epic. Got this from developers here. You should be able to restore your backup if it was made when your system was known good.

I wouldn't...lots of problems with different versions of clockwork. But if that is where you made the backup....
You could try using the 3 finger salute to get to clockwork and see if your backup is there then restore it.

SGS III L710 Unable to Mount /anything

A strange predicament indeed. Two identical SPH-L710 phones, both came packaged running 4.1.2 build MD4 and, using this toolkit, I was able to successfully root, flash TWRP recovery and proceed to flash a custom ROM with no issues...at least to one of the phones.
My problems began with the second device. I was able to successfully root and flash recovery (TWRP or CWM) here as well. I question the success of the recovery flash due to the picture as indicated where I get numerous 'unable to...' everything. I might also add that on recovery entry TWRP asks for a password. I am not bricked as I can boot normally into the OS and use the rooted phone. I feel like I have tried everything I could find on this forum as well as several other sites to no avail. I have downgraded to 4.1.1 build LJ7 with the exact same results. I have repartitioned as well. Right now the second device is running build LJ7 since I have come to a screeching halt until I find more things to flash and hack away at this stubborn thing!
This is by no means my first bout with the Android platform, but if anyone can give me a pointer or two to set me on the right path, I will gladly hand out some thank yous!!
I had the same issue on mine. Dropping back to TWRP 2.3.1 solved it for me. Some L-710s just seem to not like the updated version.

ROM Manager was something I tried as a last resort as well, it flashed the custom recovery alright, but soft bricked it with a redundant recovery bootloop. I got past that by Odin-ing back to stock.
Odd. I've used the Toolkit you mentioned in your OP. Also the other methods to install a Recovery. Did you manage to Root again, and install a Recovery ?

Yes, I can easily root every time with Mark's toolkit as well as install a recovery, but I always get the 'unable to mount...' message when I attempt to do anything and it will not recognize neither the internal nor the external sdcard.

UPDATE: Still in the same boat even after flashing all the way back to TWRP 2.2.2.0. Recovery can't find or mount anything!
Although I'm not sure why (since I used the same methods and the same toolkit on both phones), I have a feeling that the internal memory and/or partitions somehow got corrupted. The only thing I haven't tried is using Odin to repartition and reflash everything including the bootloader. Hopefully someone has posted the files for us!

Yes, I can easily root every time with Mark's toolkit as well as install a recovery, but I always get the 'unable to mount...' message when I attempt to do anything and it will not recognize neither the internal nor the external sdcard.

I believe you can do that with mskip's Toolkit. I would also reformat the SD Card. To format the SD Card you can use SD Formatter.

I tried formatting the sdcard as well as without the sdcard and even with a different one to no avail. I'm still on the hunt for pda, csc, etc. Odin files. My last resort will be to figure out how to get it replaced at Sprint as a defective device lol

Have you tried using stock recovery? obviously not to flash anything but just to try and navigate the sd or wipe the cache for example. Just curious if the mounting issues are present in all recoveries or just twrp/cwm. Also a bit intrigued by the fact that the phone still boots and operates normally

Yes, stock recovery allows clearing of cache, depending on whose stock recovery I flash. If I flash the toolkit version of stock, I can clear no problems. There are a couple of other stock recoveries, such as this one, in which everything fails as well.
FYI, I have even flashed the stock builds you have on sxtp with the same results.
Thanks for this -- you solved my problem...at least mostly.
I tried to root a new Sprint SG3 by ODIN'ing CWM and then flashing a root.zip file. That epic failed just like your situation where nothing would mount in recovery whether I used CWM or TWRP. I am assuming that something must've changed on the Sprint S3's and that root method must not work anymore (for whatever reason). So I decided to go back to stock recovery and just wait and see if anything further is discovered about this here (I'm not a dev, so I have to wait for other more talented people to solve my problems). However, the stock recovery image that I downloaded from the same "Easy Root" tutorial here didn't work and I still couldn't mount anything.
Saw your post where you stated that the Toolkit stock recovery image worked, so I just tried that and score! However...my poor little recovery android is on his back with a red triangle and a "!". Everything mounts, I can wipe cache, browse around for an update, etc., but I'm a little concerned that my little Android is sick. Should I be? Is that because I have a flash count of 5 so it thinks I have a custom ROM?
Sorry to hijack your thread a little, but my problems seems to be related.

I just got a brand new GS3 today and am having the exact same problem you describe. I have rooted several GS3s before... normally is child's play. I am a bit embarrassed to get stuck here. CWM nor TWRP mount anything... major bummer. TWRP prompts me for a password as if it thinks it is an encrypted /data partition... strange.

I'm having the same issue. I finally downloaded an image that allowed me to flash it but I still cannot mount anything in recovery? Any help would be nice
Thanks guys, it is comforting to know I'm not the only poor soul stuck in this rut! I'm pretty sure I have exhausted all flashing resources out there at this point, but I'm eager to try whatever new that has potential of working that anyone cares to conjure up.
One strange thing I have also noticed on the problematic phone is that the signal is significantly weaker than my phone, even when both were at stock. It is always dropping calls and/or going into roaming, etc. I haven't been able to produce a log of any sort as they won't write since recovery cannot mount ANYTHING! Lol

Folks, A quick search would have led ya here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2183910&page=4 This is a known issue with both TWRP and CWM recoveries on newer S3's. Devs are working on it to find a solution. Just a matter of being patient and waiting. IF you just want root access, you can odin a pre-rooted rom to the phone with no issues. You'll atleast have root at that point. Just unable to change rom/kernels on the fly.
I achieved root with virtually no issues but thank you for the link!

What error does it give when it fails to flash a ROM? What ROM are you trying to flash?

ok i had twrp through goo manager, and i was able to make backups and install kernels just finel but when i tried a rom such as infamous it gave me the error, so i tried to install through micro sd card, no luck same error something about it not being mounted. So, i installed cwm and tried to make a backup but then i ran out of space, so the backup failed, so i had to delete some stuff, now im trying to back up again, then i will try to install a rom with cwm
this is so strange, i didnt do anytihng out of the ordinary, i got root by chainfire, then installed goo manager, and then a custom kernel...the most viewed one right now, so i thought it was legit which im sure it is, then a rom..... to end the madness, then i keep getting errors, its so frustrating

Ok, see, now that is getting to the meat. Try flashing another ROM... I understand you might just want Infamous, but try flashing another one just for testing purposes. I'm thinking you're one to add to the list of having a bad Infamous d/l.

I may be overboard with my suggestion, but it wouldn't hurt to Odin back to 100% stock and restart your journey.
now it says E cant open/sdcard/o/download/jedi(bad)

Before you Odin back; are you still able to successfully flash any of the kernels you've downloaded? Also, if you downloaded any of the ROMs onto your computer, try browsing through the zips real quick on your computer.

Slow down, re-group, you are NOT going to brick...
First off, lets try some things, my first would be try a different recovery, copy a rom you want to the internal sdcard, then try. Bet it works.
I had a issue like this also, day 2 of my g4, pull the battery for 5-10 min, it seems the recovery gets confused and it will error.
another item to try...check to make sure the md5 file size is correct. common mistake, people for get to do a check.
try these, if you have the same issues, odin back to stock and start over.
Good luck. Your welcome.

Probably this...and a formatting of the internal storage couldn't hurt either to make sure everything is cleared out.
Hey I had same problem. Download through Firefox not reg browser. And for infamous use the last download link
Goomanger gave me 3 bad downloads. To test this theory try and open the zip through a file manager, it probably won't let you because of bad download.. Happened to me 4 times but stopped using stock browser to download those files and has been working ever since

Also if you can't flash most things from more than 1 recovery still(happened to me when first got my gs4) I did Odin again but used 2.5.0.2 twrp and everything fixed as well. I recently was having the problem you have now and my first suggestion fixed it

Might want to thank people for the effort...there is a thanks button
get into recovery now, and do a factory reset, flash the correct kernel for your device, it will boot.
