New to Nexus Modding - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Hey guys
Just a quick question. I took a quick looking at the "modding for beginners" threads but didn't find a direct answer to my question.
I'm coming from a Droid charge which was a phone with a MicroSD card which all my files were on. If I were to put a ROM on my phone, everything on my phone would be deleted however all my files and everything would stay intact because they were all on the MicroSD card. If I were to flash one of the ROMs available, would I have to transfer all my stuff to an external storage device (such as my computer) and then transfer it back after I'm done flashing, or do my own files stay and just the system files are modified?
Thanks guys and sorry if this was posted somewhere else.

Everything on the storage of the Galaxy Nexus will be wiped when you unlock the bootloader but once that has been accomplished and you move all your files back & then flash a rom nothing will be deleted unless you do a full wipe from recovery but most roms do not require a wipe at all.

so essentially what you're saying is everything on my phone will be wiped once, but then after that no matter how many times I switch ROMs, all my info will still be there? Info being media, apps, etc. I could care less about contacts because I have it all synced through google.

[Q] I have a question about flashing roms

I've never had a phone that doesnt have an SD card. So I flashed roms left and right and didnt have to worry about a lot of data like music and pictures and stuff on my phone.
Does the clockwork for the nexus avoid wiping certain folders to preserve some of that data or am I going to have to deal with losing everything every single time i want to do a data wipe for a new rom or something? I thought I read it did something like this for the nexus s. Is it functioning the same for the galaxy nexus?
Thanks!
Yes. When using CWM, it avoids wiping anything in the //sd card/ folder. Although when unlocking the bootloader for the first time this will wipe EVERYTHING so make sure to backup!

[Q] Pitfalls of Flashing the GNex?

Hello, I searched through three pages and didn't find a similar thread, I have also skimmed a fair bit and still nothing.
Since the GNex has all of its memory internal will I be forced to slowly and painfully back up all of my pictures, music, documents, etc every time I choose to switch roms and do a full wipe?
I understand that in the process of rooting it is a safety feature of Google's to erase everything; however, I just hope there is an easier way.
if you use a rom from the same cook you might not have to wipe before you install a newer rom.

That's true but with this being a new device and the hope that their will be a HUGE amount of development that would be a fate worse than not even rooting lol.
I'm confused. With the Nexus S I never lost all my stuff on the SD when I wiped and flashed new roms. Is there something different with the file system between the Galaxy and the S?

when you wipe you don't lose any pictures or videos or anything like that. It only erases the system and data folders
Generally, it only wipes/reinstalls /system and /data, leaving /sdcard intact (even though there isn't an sdcard... we know). That being said, it is possible to fully wipe the device, as I've had to do a few times (copying stuff back to my phone right now actually...), but most people won't need to do that at all. Even for switching ROMs.
Good to know the Nexus S avoided this issue. It might be that you just lose everything when you do the initial root, flash cwm, etc step.
You will lose everything whenever you fastboot oem unlock.

SD Card Question

Hey all, having problems with my SD card. I am able to mount to the computer to transfer files but when i do it freezes there is no progression after a certain point and everytime i mount it tells me i need to fix the SD card or continue without fixing.. My question is if i fix it and it removes data will i lose root and everything so i have to start over? or not? Atm i am transferring item via SD piggy back from my tablet to SD.
Don't know if it will help running aokp build 40.
Cheers in advanced
Star all over from scratch... best thing I can think off. That way if something is not set right it won't brick you. As long as u have a Google account you won't loose nothing. Once u restore to factory and reroot just sign in to your phone as new (when you bought it) and all the files u have accumulated while come back. Music and other stuff not purchased will be lost since you will start of fresh as a new device. Just follow the instructions. As they say, K.I.S.S. ( keep it simple stupid) no pun intended. Once u completed all of that you can restart all you was doing.

Restoring your phone has nothing to do with your sd card for one thing, the other thing would be your not going to brick your phone by wiping your sd card. You may erase a nandroid thou if there stored on your sd.

OK cool thanks guys i will erase some nandroids and go from there
I agree but also disagree. In the even that he does a factory full on restore he would have to reset and by doing so he would format his internal and external SD cards. Hence why he would loose any stored data. If he only is wipping then none is lost. At least that's the way I have done. I'm not a dev or any of the sort. Just someone with a stretched hand to help.
Edit. I always suggest to start from scratch due to if something may have gone faulty (bad download, bugs, or anything of the sort) it can be erased and won't be introduced to newer rom flashed. Always clean keeps thins safer. But then again that's my opinion

Reboot stuck on PA3+ screen

Hi all,
I've recently rooted my Galaxy S3 with CWM, but couldn't do the Paranoid Android upgrade due to CWM being an old version or something like this.
I downloaded ROM Manager and upgraded CWM. Then went to recovery mode and installed Paranoid Android 3+.
Upon restart, the screen remains locked forever on the PA3+ initial screen.
Any urgent help would be really appreciated.
Thanks.
Try twrp, factory reset before flash.

Hi, thanks for your reply.
Can you pls explain in some more details as I'm a beginner? To note that I cannot use the phone, so I guess the things I have to do should be done with a pc I guess... or in recovery mode maybe?
Shall I try recovery mode and do a factory reset, and in that case will I lose data?
Well this should actually be handled in the thread where you got PA, in case there are certain things that the gs3 requires, but when going from one ROM to another, you are supposed to factory reset from within recovery. Yes you lose your apps and data, not sdcard stuff like pictures, etc. This is why we all use titanium backup or helium to backup our apps.
Twrp is usually preferred over cwm these days.
Again you need to read in your device section about the proper way of handling things because your device is different from mine.

Actually I did a backup with Titanium, but not sure if I saved it on the internal drive or on the external sd card, and I can't access the phone to check were... but if I remember well it saved in the titanium folder which be default I think saves on the internal drive. Unfortunately neither the pc nor Kies won't recognise the phone...
Do you know with a factory reset if i loose my contacts also?

It shouldn't matter where your titanium backup is located. A factory reset in recovery should not wipe your SD card. Internal or external. Again I really cannot stress enough that this post belongs in your device section to get the people that know your device best. Your device is not officially supported by the PA team and this is a general ROM flashing issue not an issue with PA ROM
Your contacts should be backed up to Google unless you changed that.

[Q] problems with flashing a new rom and more

Hey guys, it's been a long time since I've been flashing roms and stuff and I barely came back since I was tired of this jellybean Rom I'm on. Right now I have an older Rom that from what I an seeing isn't being developed anymore, wicked v10, Android 4.1.1, and I went through all the backups, with using tb to back up my apps, and I went into my recovery, cleared data and system, flashed quantum 3.6.4, flashed pa gapps, the same old stuff, and after I set up, I noticed the emulated sd card as I expected as it did that to me when I used to run aokp, but I could not ever find for the life of me any of my titanium backup backups, screenshots, etc. Even when I checked my other sd card folders. I found that strange since when I restored my backup, I was easily able to find the rest of the things mentioned. So what am I doing wrong? Also, is there a way to port my sms to hangouts as the new Rom used, and will I be able to used the restore backups of my contacts through the xml or something file that I generate in my contacts app when I used the app that comes with the new Rom? Thx in advance
Adding on to the fact I cannot edit my old post from my buggin out xda app, I seem to have found out whats wrong, which is that my internal sd is either not mounted properly, or cannot be read properly, while flashing ANY kitkat rom. I tried to search forums and google for a solution to this but I couldn't turn up anything. So can anyone at least tell me if this is a recurring bug on cm11 or kitkat based roms or am I just screwing up on something along the way?

Have you tried Odin flashing your firmware and factory resetting after?
Could also be the /0/0/0/ folder problem. Every time you flash a rom it adds another /0 and that becomes the default directory. Look in /storage (maybe wrong, going by memory). It's well documented though. Check the faq sticky, I think it may be covered there.

I have not tried odin flashing and all that stuff just yet but I checked every possible folder using es file explorer and it seems not to be mounted. I will check the faq though
EDIT: FAQ didn't come up with anything. The only thing I can do now is to Odin my phone but I'm not sure exactly if it would work and be worth my time. It seems as if other people with different devices using cm11 and cm11 based roms have had this issue
