comparison - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

Hi All..
I'm deciding to upgrade to this monster from the 1st Samsung Epic 4g
With all things being equal..(mostly location) will this load web pages faster?
The Epic was much slower when I compared mine vs a friends T-MOBILE Samsung equivalent phone while on 3G a few days ago...
Should I take the plunge???
Mike

Do it man, and don't even look back! I had the tmobile vibrant back in the day, and this thing is far superior. Everything is better, browser, tw launcher, gps, etc etc.

[Q] For those who jumped ship from the Epic 4G - was it worth it?

At the moment I am satisfied with my Epic 4G - Samsung finally released Gingerbread source and Cyanogen 7.1 is coming along nicely.
However, I stumbled across someone selling a like new ET4G for $325 with car charger, case, and screen protector. The ESN is legit. This sounds like a great deal, and I know that I can resell the phone at that price or higher if I decide I don't like it or if the Galaxy Nexus miraculously comes to Sprint in November.
For those of who who jumped ship from the Epic 4G to the E4GT: are you happy with your decision? Do you miss the keyboard? Any advice?
I'm very satisfied and happy to have switched. Loved my 4G (my wife now has it) but the ET FLYS! This thing is FAST. Greatly significantly faster.
The increased operational memory and the internal USB RAM is also a great boost. For regular phone use the 4G is quite good. For a power user... the ET is the answer.
I am personally glad i made the switch, I love the ET. My wife now has the OG Epic, and coming from the shift, she's in heaven.

Thanks for the responses. Do you guys miss the keyboard at all?
Loved my Epic but EG4T is another level
I cannot speak about the Epic 4G, but I recently got into an ET from an OG Evo. I am in heaven. I cannot imagine a better smartphone is on the market right now, and I have played with a few of the contenders. I have not rooted it yet and I do miss some things lost without cyanogen (which will give me a reason to root when it is available) but I don't hate touchwiz. Certainly not the way I hated Sense. In fact, it has a couple features I genuinely like. Right now, I am happy as can be with the phone. Even if the Galaxy Nexus came to Sprint I am not sure I would see it as essential to wait for it.
As always the ET could have better battery life, but it is vastly superior to my Evo 4G in that regard. I assume once cyanogen is out, battery will improve a bit more.
It's amazing. 325 before you sell off yours? I would bite. For sure.
I jumped from the Epic 4G to this. I have to say that it is a pretty significant upgrade. The whole thing seems a lot smoother for me. My girlfriend still uses the Epic 4G, and when I use it, the thing feels both small and bulky at the same time. And since your Touch will be an out-of-contract purchase, you'll be able to get a nice discount on an LTE phone when Sprint makes the switch.
Thanks guys. You've convinced me to go through with this. I have watched a few videos of folks playing around with their ETs on YouTube and was impressed by the snappiness and screen size. Not that the OG Epic is a slouch - I'm just a size queen and rather demanding when it comes to my electronics. The fact that the ET is likely to get ICS next year is icing on the cake.
Like ArchAngel suggested, my plan is to snag a sexy LTE phone (hopefully a Tegra 3 Kal-El) this time next year when I have the 2 year upgrade eligibility. Score!
As far as missing the keyboard, I don't. I thought I would, but in landscape mode, there's no issues for me here;-)

Epic touch, evo 3d or nexus 4g

Any suggestions? Almost up to my upgrade, need some advice

E4gt by a long shot. Smoother ,longer battery life!
The epic 4g touch by a long shot. Samsung focused on software amd hardware instead of a gimmick like the 3d did and the nexus 4g is a great phone but it's out of date hardware wise.
Lots of other reasons, but those are the biggest ones.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk
Evo 3D isnt even used as a benchmark when comparing newly released phones, almost as if it is "old" hardware", such as the Nexus 4G Epic Touch IS the best device of 2011, IMHO it will beat out the Galaxy Nexus as well, once we have official ICS anyway. But by then HTC's Quad Core device will drop, making the Epic Tough "old hardware" If you want today's top of the line device, then its Epic Touch FTW!
I disagree on the evo3d not being a benchmark. A nexus feels slow compared to either of the other 2 other phones. When it comes to comparing a et4g and evo3d, u almost have to spend a week just you figure out what screen u prefer (i know people say a evo3d looks washed out when side by side). Truth of the matter is that both screens are terrific and depends on ur style. As for power, its like racing 2 new street bikes, both are plenty fast and to me, speed isnt a issue. The new sg2s actually has the same processor (almost) as the 3d. Now it comes down to the joy of using, and i pick sense everytime. Htc has of nice widgets that play well with sync'n ur accounts. Facebook is fully intergrated with everything. At the end, both phones dont leave much to be desired. U will be completely happy with a evo3d or et4g. Ill also add that the et4g takes.better pics, but also not 3d (so ur choice). To me 3d is great but i would trade cameras with the et4g if i could. I think the evo3d screen is way more responsive and feels alot better and smoother to use. This might not be a issue if u have never owned a sensitive device.
***i left out bugs and battery life because of it being a misleading issue. Xda is full of whinners who complain about every detail on both devices. Fanboys lie about battery life on both devices. Both make it thru the day and charge it at night.
No question the Epic Touch. I have had all three these phones. The EVO-3D was a major let down for the successor to the classic EVO 4G. I returned it after two weeks.
Bought the Nexus-S 4G and it was a cool little phone. Nice screen. Lightweight. Fast for single core.
Last week picked up the ET4 and man this thing feels and looks like a next gen device compared to those other two. Like those other phones feel years old. The ET4 has an amazing screen. Very thin. Lightweight...ridiculous long battery life. And the good ROM's are finally coming out.
For Sprint this is hands down their best device.

I agree, my Wife still has the Nexus and compared to my ET4 it is a huge difference. And this phone is much thinner which I really like.

there are issues with EVERY phone. The prime will have its fair share of issues, hell, they just rolled out an ETA for nexus users to fix a volume but.
I wouldnt take any other phone except for the galaxy note. and even thats too big. The et4g will be in my hands for at least the next 6 months. its THAT good. Had the nexus, evo3d, tried the photon, there is no comparison whatsoever.
Also, no point in waiting on new phones, because guess what, after you wait, then finally make a purchase, something better is going to come out 2 months later.
This is a great phone and you will love it. It is super thin but doesnt fell cheap. It is much lighter than the Evo (I have held the 3D so I cant compare). Very fast and the screen is beauty. You can even see it clearly in daylight at a medium black light setting.
The only issue I am having with it is when I play a game on it it just closing the app because of a sound issue.
Here is the posting on google about the problem:
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=17623
And here is the possible solution to the issue:
http://www.grayfinstudios.com/post?id=ag1ncmF5Zmlud2ViYXBwcgwLEgRQb3N0GIHuBQw
But even with that problem the phone is still wonderful. I was looking at the Sprint forum a few nights ago and Samsung and Sprint are suppose to be working on a fix. But you know how that goes.
ive tried them all. epic 4g touch is bar far the fastest and best battery
Epic Touch 4G by a very long shot. The device is super fast and the stock rom is very well rounded. I am a flash-junky, and while my device is rooted, I am still running the stock rom. Even the default launcher is great, although I still prefer ADW Launcher. The device runs full flash and never laggy no matter what sites I go on. Even adult sites (just to test of course ). I can play every video type I've tried with the stock video player. Even AVI and MKV. Even things that my netbook has trouble running, the E4gT runs without a problem.

I have the E4GT, gave my Evo 3D to my wife. Nexus is coming out with new model called Prime.
E4GT vs Evo 3D = E4GT for sure.
Keep in mind E4GT has bugs for some people (including myself) loss of service and games crashing, a fix is "supposed to be coming soon". Even with this bug, I choose E4GT.
E4GT vs Nexus Prime:
Every aspect Nexus wins for me with BIG except the camera.
Note that in camera world 8mp vs 5mp doesn't matter, it's the lense. From the international version of Nexus Prime, the camera sux. This is a deal breaker for me because I take an average of 100-200 pics every month (like they say, the best camera is the one you have with you when you need it). UNLESS the Nexus Prime coming to Sprint I would guess around jan or February improve the quality of camera, I decided based on that.
Today's winner is E4GT. Tomorrow's winner is pending for me. If only I knew the improved Nexus Prime would be coming to Sprint, only then 100% Prime. Or if camera Quality is not important to you, 100% wait and get Prime...
IMHO

Should I upgrade?

Epic touch 4G best phone hands down. as to my opinion, the epic touch is a really nice phone, fast, big, beautiful screen. etc. but the galaxy nexus is also very nice. depends on what u want. if u want android 4.0 galaxy nexus is the choice for u. but if u want a phone thats nice and will soon be upgraded to android 4.0 ( might even be better than galaxy nexus), The epic touch 4G. Also the user interfaces. Epic has TW4 and Galaxy nexus has the new ICS UI.
If your in a rush ... he the epic touch you won't be let down... also don't see sprint releasing anything good anytime soon

Yeah don't expect any major device to be released on Sprint until LTE nears implementation. E4GT is a nice choice if you want to stick with Sprint.

The two best phones now are the HTC EVO 3D and the Samsung Galaxy s2. I just recently sold my EVO 3D that I had since launch date and bought the this SG2 and I am really impressed with the Sammy! In fact I think its a better phone all together IMHO.
We just upgraded my wifes from the epic 4g to the gs2 touch on sprint...wow. I have a few friends w the galaxy nexus and I own a nexus s. The gs2 is a beast. I have ran ics roms and they are nice, I'm still waiting for my 4g ota but as far as her gs2, its the fastest phone I have used. It runs great. Battery is great. Camera is great. Lots of features I didn't expect. Built-in screenshot. Tilt zoom. Mhl adapted HDMI.
On ek02 its producing 85+ mflops and 4200+ quadrant stock...if anyone cared lol.
My vote...get the gs2. 0 disappointment
I upgraded from the moment when this phone came out and it is like a new world! I honestly don't see any reason not to. For the first month or so I just watched as the devs worked on this and the options available for this phone now are mind blowing! I would say go for it-I have yet to see a better option on any network.

The epic touch is better in a hardware sense, but the evo 3d has been confirmed by sprint to be receiving ics, so it really is a matter of what is important to you. Evo is basically the sprint equivalent of Verizon's DROID branding. At this point I would wait for an official ics phone to be released.

Epic touch is a really good phone. Consider the phone on the galaxy nexus. Reviews have said it's nothing to write home about with it's lower 5mp camera and studdering camcorder. I love my nexus s 4g but I can tolerate the epic touch. Et has better camera and camcorder, option to add sd card, and I think the galaxy nexus doesn't have sd card support. When or if sprint gets the gn, it will be a great phone, but by then the bar will be raised higher with other competing phones. It will be a repeat performance of the ns4g. Nothing revolutionary about the hardware and other phones will out spec it. It will be fast but old news by then. I highly suggest to not get the iPhone 4s. I had it for two months and traded it in towards my epic touch. I kinda miss the phone but I don't miss the app store and apple's tight fitted grip on the os and mods or themes. There still isn't a jailbreak for it and nothing promising is on the horizon for being able to untethered jailbreak.
I would definitely go with the Epic 4g Touch. It's honestly an amazing phone. It's ridiculously light weight. Every iPhone user I know has phone envy when I whip this thing out. I don't doubt they will have it moreso when we've got ICS, CM9, CM7 and MIUI all working.

so who's leaving the epic 4g touch for the galaxy nexus?
I was thinking about it. But the camera on the Epic 4G touch will keep me from jumping.
Me cause the Dallas is the first city to acquire lte.
I only been with sprint for six months so grandfathered lte speed connection for one and half year more.

It's a Nexus.
Plus im sitting on 4 upgrades and my Epics screen has a few scratches on it :/
I could swear this has been posted before....maybe its deja vu

Not me, since we probably won't see lte here before the next ice age it isn't a factor in my phone choice. I like the overall size of the E4GT, learned the hard way going from EVO 4G to EVO 3D that longer/narrower isn't better for the way the phone feels in your hand.
No doubt e4gt is better phone but unlimited lte speed I am up for it.

Sprint's LTE is going to suck atleast at first IMO
Have you seen Verizons coverage ?
they have LTE everywhere !
>_<
Yes this may be sprints first LTE phone how many cities have sprint LTE. If you want 4g might be better holding off until late this year/early next for better LTE support and stick with WiMax for now.
Also as other have said the epic touch is a better phone. Better rear camera, faster processor, better gpu, battery lasts longer on WiMax vs. LTE. The only advantages of the galaxy nexus is slightly larger screen (at that size could be a con), LTE support, and better custom rom support.
So overall I would say the epic touch is a nicer phone.
Why would lte suck more than wimaxx? Lte running in lower frequency penetrates building much better than wiimax

Personally Im waiting for a samsung quad core, most likely the S3. I have found out through my many attemps to switch OEM's that I am a samsung fan, no matter what. But seriously, your talking about "upgrading" to a phone that has been out for 4-5 months by the time sprint releases it, and around that same time phones will be lauching with twice the processor, twice the camera, etc. Why waste your upgrade, or money?

+1 to that. Besides that, when you upgrade to something that has little or no DEV support, it is better to just wait awhile.

thanks for harshing my buzz over your sigs with the mention of the IBone...
have an upgrade now, but defiantly going to wait for 4 cores. Hopefully the next "Nexus" inst too far away. Im sure well have all the roms proper soon enough: MIUI, CM9, AOKP. There almost all ready as is.
Though I cant possibly Imagine what that much power is for in a phone considering our e4gt underclocked to 500mhz still runs like a dream.
E4GT all the way
Having had the Nexus S 4G and living with it's absolutely terrible speaker quality and generally weak volume (missed calls due to low volume and weak vibrate, using the speakers for YouTube or online videos was a waste of time) and terrible radio to boot, it's a wonder that it's the same Samsung that makes the NS4G and the Epic Touch.
The Epic Touch is night and day compared to the NS4G specifically in the areas of audio, speaker quality and volume.
Having prefaced with all that, i'm skeptical about the Galaxy Nexus as well. First off, the camera is not good, some VZW users have said. I have read some posts talking about low speaker quality, basically the speakers are not loud at all (same issue i found with the NS4G). At least Sprint's version is 32GB storage (negates whining about expansion slot a bit).
I'll have to play with it in person first before deciding. Epic Touch is plenty fine and functioning very well for me right now.

The HD screen on the nexus alone makes the jump worth it IMO. You are still right though. It's going to take a while for sprint lte to mature.

Question for Sprint GNex owners

I am currently on the EVO 3D and just picked up the Epic 4G Touch and was planning on moving over to it. But, I just found a pretty good deal on the Galaxy Nexus and was trying to decide if I should skip moving to the E4GT and crack open the brand new box.
My question is about problems that the Verizon model saw. Also those coming from the 3D and E4GT what are you seeinghow battery life and signal strength compare to the EVO 3D and the E4GT.
Thanks
I had the Epic 4G Touch before this Galaxy Nexus and there are a lot of little things I miss about it:
-Better camera
-Flawless performance with live wallpapers
-Only 16gb but it has an empty MicroSD slot
-Display was gorgeous even at a lower resolution
-Better battery life
Having said that... I don't think I could go back to it. I love not having to flash a ROM to get vanilla ICS and the 720p display on this thing is a thing of beauty. Not to mention it is LTE ready. And what is huge to me is how the phone looks and feels physically. The Epic felt cheaper and more plastic-ish. And I love the soft keys.
I really don't notice much of a difference in overall signal strength. But if you look at my post history I posted a thread about 3G signal dropping a lot. It happens enough to be annoying but when it does I have had WiFi available so it's not a deal breaker for me.
EDIT: gray colors get a purple hue when the brightness is way down, but I've been told that's normal with this kind of display.

Thanks, those are good things to consider. Anyone else have any input?
I am really on the fence as to whether I want to go back to my epic or stick with my nexus. Last night there was an electrical storm here in Austin. I had my nexus and was filming the storm. My wife had her epic right next to me. The difference in quality was stunning. The video from my name nexus was almost un-watchable. The blacks were pixelized and the lighting was out of focus. On my wife's epic, the video was beautiful. The blacks were solid and the lighting was in focus and awesome. I like the phone as a whole and I am excited about LTE; but without LTE I am wondering why I switched at all at this point.

That is why I haven't broken the seal on the GNex yet. I love the clean ICS experience, but it seems like the E4GT really is still a really liked phone. I wish that ASOP and AKOP were a little more solid on the E4GT and then I would probably wait awhile longer for the GNex
I had an evo 3d for 4 months and an epic touch for 2 weeks. I like my evo since it came out but I was disappointed with the camera moved on to the 4s and it been my daily driver till I got my nexus... I own the epic touch in between and hated the slow camera (consider I was using a 4s at the time) and how wide it was compare to the 3d and my iPhone... I return the phone I don't like touchwiz is not my cup of tea... Anyways now I got my nexus Galaxy for 2 weeks... Backing actually felt like an upgrade from my 4s evn tho I could go back and forth but phones are great IMO the camera could be better and battery life was bad the first week finally decided to root and i'm just as happy as I used to be with myns rom on my OG evo I feel the google finally is getting android all together UI is so much better and I definitely can't go back to gingerbread or skin ICS I hope this helps you decide I'm definitely staying with this phone as my daily driver I know the evo lte is coming soon but it doesn't interest me as much

I enjoy my GN. I aint gonna lie but I do miss my EVO4g and what jgalan says nothing can go wrong with MYN's roms. Damn they were good. I had the chance to jump on the EVOLTE wagon but tried sense on my wifes EVO3d and I cant stand sense anymore. So I am good with my GN. If this purple tint gets worse as time goes by I gotz my insurance.
