What are the best video encode setting for the gn? A lot of my films are fine but the occasional one is stutter and when using HDMI on the TV its not really watchable, so just wondering the best setting to use in handbrake or similar
Thanks

Not really sure, but I had to download an app to play a 720p mkv file and it played wonderfully using hardware decoding. I did try to play it with software decoding and it was basically 1 fps
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
how do you set hardware decoder over software decoder?
most of the movies i have are mkvs and audio is either ac3 or dts
so i use mxvideo player to play via software decode. works fine. some stutter with some action scenes @720p. but plays better than what my transformer does
Mkvs seem fine, avi seems to not play as well as they could some are OK but wanted to convert, I'm sure there was a thread with best settings but can't find it

so i followed the settings here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1060825
and im not very impressed, im sure there are better setting than this
anyone got any ideas?

What is an app where I can watch .avi files on my nexus 7?
I've tried looking around but I don't see any one talking about it...

I use Dice Player, plays pretty much everything that I've thrown at it thus far.

MX and Dice Player are the best options imo, I've only been using MX player though as it hasn't given me any problem with any of my movies including 720 & 1080p flicks. I heard MX dropped DTS support so some movies may not have sound, that's where dice player comes in.

Ya your right , due to some patent issues. Mx player dropped from dts. Still it is the best

I used to love Mobo Player. Using MX now, but if Mobo fixes it for the N7 I'll go back to that.

Moboplayer updated yesterday, works on nexus 7 now. It can also switch video playback to a floating window.

I've been using Dice.. But haven't tried the other ones mentioned here.

I switched from MX Player to BS Player after seeing it recommended in these forums. The only thing I miss from MX is the lock mode.

Yeah, I kinda regret buying MXPlayer Pro. Should have read up more before buying anything. BSPlayer is good but, no screen lock.
DICE Player plays my .avi files but, sometimes, I have to start them a couple of times because the video will fc and throw me back to the Skifta Video Browse screen. Weird.
Yes it is good, but I want an app that hides the soft keys like the video app which incidentally works great for mp4 files.

The main reason I switched was becuase I was getting no audio with .mkv files in MX Player, whereas in BS Player all the files I tried were ok.

Anyone successfully played a 720/1080p file over their network?
Ive tried all the players but just seems to stutter like crazy!
Used to use diceplayer on my HOX with the dts plugin and had no probs.
Anyone got a player/settings thats working?
Sent from my GT-N7100 using xda app-developers app
VLC Direct
When you say playing over the network you mean accessing the share via dice or play stream via upnp?
I assume you mean the first. I too use dice with plugin and noticed indeed reltively frequent stuttering when acessing share from dice but using buble upnp all is fine against an xbmc server without any transcoding and dice so that is what I use and it is fine for me.
Also compared to gtab 7.7 less powerful HW I noticed wifi on note2 to be more sensible; I mean if I watch mkv covering fully the device with my palm I get problem. Of course cant really do that with the 7.7
So other than that all is quite fine on my side. I really do suspect though accessing cifs gives bad throughput somehow. I use omega 3 and cifs.ko copying stuff from a share is abnormally skow for me.

Use es file explorer and play through stock player.

Actually tried playing though the bsplayer app itself and its much improved although its struggling with 1080p
Will give your tips a try, thanks

What's the best movie player for playing 720p files? I've heard the stock player doesn't play all file formats. What do you use?

I second the use of MX Player - been running it on both my phone and the Nexus 7 and it's great. I like that it was gesture controls as well as on-screen buttons.
The app called 'MX player' is the best player I found. It plays just about any type of video format you there.

I used MX player since I purchased the N7 and i found it almost perfect. For everything else, you can try the nightlies of XMBC. Probably once it will be polished will be a good alternative.

So far I've been using MXplayer, however, and ideally, I wish I could solely use VLC as I'd prefer to rely on open source software.

Diceplayer works well for me using hardware decoding.
MXplayer stutters for me using hardware decoding. Software decoding works fine on MXplayer, but uses more battery than h/w decoding.
Nothing I have found gas played 1080p video with DTS audio add well add bsplayer. This is very important to me add I rather not have top convert or download different versions for my mobile device

No one here uses "Super Video, Floating and Popup"? This and Mobo player have been ole faithfuls for me. For one Super Video has gestures, (turn volume up and down while watching movie), Also after one video ends, it automatically plays another. (Works very well when watching saved music videos, and don't want to have to click on another video after the last one ended.) It also has minimizes to a small floating video so you can see your home screen in the background while you continue to watch movies/videos.
If MXplayer does this also, i might need to give it a try.
The stock gallery app is easily the best for playing videos it supports.
I don't think other players support the LPcore and stuff, and they use waaay too much processing power. I have tried 3rd party ones but they all use more than one core at nearly full freq most of the time. This is why I'm using stock
Feel free to prove me wrong though
I'm have been trying to use my xbox 360 with its DLNA. I'm running my rooted N2. Every time I watch a video it freezes about 10 seconds in to it. I don't want to shell out for Samsung allshare hub. It's there a third party app that works better?
Make sure the video your watching isnt the issue and you have good wifi connection. I had the same issue but it ended up being I was gerting poor signal

Yrah I think I narrowed it down to, it doesn't like 1080 video. It plays 720 pretty well
1080 is really pushing it on a wireless network.

Our phone streams 1080 poorly, copy to extSD for these files and stream 720 freely

I'm looking around for a really good and thorough video player that works well with the N7 and can handle most or all file types such as MKV. So far the stock video play has handled everything well but I noticed it struggling with MKV files so I tried MX Player and so far its OK but it has annoying ads and I can't find an option to buy it to remove ads. They don't seem to show up during play back but they're in the menus and my OCD side comes out. Thanks for any help in advance!

Try Dice Player(https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.inisoft.mediaplayer.a) or MoliPlayer(https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.moliplayer.android)
both works fine with n7
