[Q] Is your multitasking button less responsive than the Home/Back buttons? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

After using the phone for a few days I've noticed that the Multitasking button has a noticeable delay between when I touch it and when the phone vibrates/button lights up to confirm the touch.
When the Back or Home buttons are pressed, the vibration and visual feedback are instant (feels like capacitive buttons on the previous Nexus phones, for example). However, this is not the case with the multitasking button- it takes about half a second to respond. This is starting to get a bit annoying, as one would expect all three navigation buttons to respond in the same manner.
Is anyone else experiencing this?

yeah I noticed a little delay when pressing the multitasking button. I suppose it has something to do with the phone accessing the memory and presenting all the applications as there is little to no delay after swiping away most of the windows leaving just a few.

Yup, I've noticed it too.

Yup. Big donation to whoever is first to sort this bastard.

Yeah, as others said, it's probably quite a resource intensive task to "screenshot" (although I'm sure it's cleverer than that) all the currently running activities and build the menu.
As for a fix- I guess they could have a background service running that keeps a cache of the active apps preview. Then it could be displayed much more quickly. I guess the downside is the previews could be slightly out of date depending on how often it polls, but that may be better for some folk.

very very slow.
I prefer the long press home for recent apps that Gingerbread had.
Also, swiping the apps off the screen doesn't mean it closed the apps, I think its all aesthetic.

It works for some but not others (ones with background data).
I would prefer if Google kept their word on consistency and allow us to force close through it with a dialog or something.
Anyone who wasn't aware of the fine print would think the app is closed completely.

I agree that this is probably why, but as a programmer/UI designer myself, I know that timely feedback is extremely important in user experience. The button should respond immediately, and then delay if necessary while loading the list of apps. It could even show a progress bar/spinner if it had to... but not responding to touch immediately is a major user experience issue. Sometimes I've pressed it multiple times because I thought it didn't get my touch on the screen.
Can anyone comment on whether the recent ICS updates (4.0.2 or 4.0.3) have addressed this? I'm still on 4.0.1.

That's good to hear! I was starting to think I was the only one experiencing this...

I've noticed also that (with 4.0.1 and 4.0.2, with 4.0.3 i don't know) the "circle" effect when you touch virtual button is pretty laggy when you are in the homescreen, but if you touch the virtual buttons when you are into an application (people, calendar, calculator, or 3rd party apps) the circle effect is really smooth.
Why??
Fixed in 4.0.3 ??

Massive drawbacks with this phone

Ghost volume button issue on most devices
No micro sd card support
Confusing user interface
No Facebook contacts sync
No native social network widget
Can't add more home screens
Fuzzy speaker
Lock screen vibration can't be switched off
No digital clock only analog widget
Quadrant benchmark only 1500 score
Lag in many areas
No Facebook events calendar sync
Only 5m camera
THE VOLUME BUG HAS REALLY PUT ME OFF AND SAMSUNG ARE STILL TO ACKNOWLEDGE
Ghost volume button issue on most devices - Valid Concern
No micro sd card support - Shouldn't be a surprise
Confusing user interface - Seriously?
No Facebook contacts sync - Facebook's fault, not Google's
No native social network widget - Again, look at the social networks for blame
Can't add more home screens - Never been more than 5 in stock android
Fuzzy speaker - valid concern
Lock screen vibration can't be switched off - Don't have one, so can't comment
No digital clock only analog widget - Never been one in stock android
Quadrant benchmark only 1500 score - Don't have one, so can't comment
Lag in many areas - Don't have one, so can't comment
No Facebook events calendar sync - Never been in stock android OR from facebook's app
Only 5m camera - Shouldn't be a surprise
Most of this is your own fault for not knowing in advance, or isn't a valid point.
"Massive"??...thats a strong term to use. Most of your points are either things we already knew or there are other ways to circumvent, so therfore a non-issue. I think you just wanted to make a thread just to be making a thread.
+1 to the other comments.... it is in the best interest to your homework before you purchase, not the day after
The ghost volume and fuzzy speaker are the only real concerns......... and Really. . . . . How many here are going to keep this stock ??? hmmmm???
My guess the sound and volume will be eliminated when either Voodoo is adapted to this phone or some other equal
And, as far as all those other issues custom roms solve all of them
As for me, I always try to get something that has great hardware the software doesn't matter, we here in XDA will customize, make, kang or just create what we need.
Seems to me that this threads are becoming typical every time a new device hits the market more so in this case with all the hype of the Nexus. Buyers remorse, lack of due diligence? Or something else…
Other than the low volume problem, this post only proves how ignorant you are.
Previous post sums it up.
UI is fine - blame the user not the tech!
I don't have the volume issue but that would be the only concern I would point the finger at.
Making a deal about vibrate on a lock screen - what next??

Saying that there has been a "lack of due diligence" implies that people have just gone out and bought the phone with no knowledge of it whatsoever. This isn't true. I read every single hands on, preview, and article I could find on the Nexus before I bought it, and not a single one mentioned any of the problems or small annoyances we have been having. So, tell me - how has showing "due diligence" made any difference to me?
Buyers remorse? Sure, that could factor into it - but only because of the problems.
These threads are becoming more typical because the devices are getting more expensive, and we are becoming to rely on them more for our day to day life. If problems are happening, they become more of an issue to us

Not sure that setting is in Security - think its in display - and deselecting it in display has no effect on lockscreen

Oh and Quadrant is one of the worst benchmarks available. Try some others like linpack / antutu / cf-bench. Eventho those are probably not optimized for ICS, they at least use multithreading etc.

I actually agree on the interface/UI. Menu key appears on some apps at the bottom some at the top some dont have it at all. Also there's no menu key on the main android screen which Paul O'Brien has modded to show that its there in the code to be used. Not sure what Google were thinking there? Same old Google for me, rushing out updates. ICS needs some polishing in my opinion. Battery life sucks still on the OS too which I would have thought they would have addressed this time around. That volume bug is a pain too, BIG ONE!
This is my opinion mind, hope Google sort these things out.

If you're talking about what i think you're talking about then that is actually intended to be like that.
Apps that use the keyboard (Such as messaging, gmail, maps, etc.) all have an action bar where, amongst other things, the menu is that the bottom. When you start using the keyboard, the action bar is removed, and the menu button is then moved to the upper right side of the corner.
Of course, any other app developer can put this wherever they like, and for the apps not currently compatible with this type of menu they have the "compatibility" menu in the software buttons.
As for, what i assume you mean the launcher, it's possible that there is still code for it in ICS to be compatible with older phones that may be upgrading to ICS but will have the 4 capacitive buttons instead, including the menu button.

[Q] Keyboard Lags?!

I've noticed that after the first few words while typing in ANY application, the keyboard for Nexus starts to lag behind the actual texting, you can feel it clearly half way through the first time, and by the 3rd line, I can type in 3 words before it registers on screen.... this is pretty problematic considering I'm still new to typing so I'm not typing that fast.
I actually like the spacing for this new keyboard, although I hate how I don't have commas, apostrophe's and question marks as a hold option on the first screen, if I wanted a keyboard that I had to press a key to access punctuation, I would've gotten an Iphone

huh? if i long hold on the period, i get those punctuation options - no need to press the ?123 key...
I sometimes have slight lag, usually a few letters behind. Its really annoying.
Same issues here...tried many roms with all wipes/reset...different keyboards...turning off haptic/sound/auto complete...flashing kernels...
I'm coming from HTC phones most recently the EVO3d and I gotta say Ive never experienced any keyboard lags ever...EVERYTHING was smooth as silk even with the heavy sense UI and bloated with apps...the HTCEVO3d ran flawlessly %99 of the time...
I switched to the s2 mainly because of the size and samsungs gorgeous displays but at the moment I am regretting it...this s2 is suppose to be one of the best phones in the world...I am severely disapointed so far though I am convinced this thing will fly once set up properly...
Im just ripping my last hairs out at the moment...I feel like Ive tried everything...right now I am in love with my MIUI rom setup and really want to stay but it is useless to me if I cant whip off any emails or texts without the keyboard stuttering...ANyone have ANY more ideas?

I have frequent short lags also. It'll hang on some letter for a short time.
I've had the same problem with the old stock keyboard on Gingerbread (sgs2) as well.
Galaxy Nexus->TapaTalk
I never have any keyboard lag in any application.. And I never have.. ever :/
Known issue where it lags in landscape - fixed in 4.0.3.
in which app does it lag? i tried browser, messaging, gtalk and google search and had zero lag.
i do remember though that when i was running stock, i'd get a slight lag in the browser when typing in the web address.
4.0.3 bigxie + franco seems to be absolutely lag-free re the keyboard, so give it a try maybe?

It is just 4.0.3 in general, not just that rom so any will work!
I have the issue in both portrait and landscape. Seems like if the app has a lot of text in it, it lags more. Search is fine for me, but gtalk, gplus, email etc lag to hell. Right now i have slight lag. I hate it because I'm also new to a virtual keyboard. Turnig off autocorrect doesnt help either. Apparently autocorrect just shut off here for no reason.
So 4.0.3 fixes this?
Don't turn off auto-correct, turn off spell checking (different feature).
Hi,
Did you ever find out what was causing this issue?
I've got the same lag issue on my new tablet.
Thanks!
Turn off gesture typing trail. It takes some time to get used to it, but it is definitely faster.

Everyone having browser issues and graphical corruption - Please try these solutions!

I didn't experience the stock browser confusion and stutter described by many including the Phone Arena review
I think it's actually caused by HTC 3 fingers gestures mode which disable full multi touch abilites, this gesture mode is used to send image to the HDMI dongle by 3 fingers swipe
with this setting off the browser ran locked 60fps like the video below, only the screen flashing/tiling for a split second when it snaps, its so smooth you don't mind the snapping effect
http://www.youtube.com/watch?gl=US&hl=en&client=mv-google&v=KATvmiBcXvw&nomobile=1
can everyone who experience browser issues and corruptions issues, try the following:
- Clear the notification area, it can cause interference with the browser, thanks to emahmood87 for finding this
- Disable 3 Gesture swipe HTC mode, to fix browser UI confusion and stutter
- Make sure all the develop options are unticked, a few of these options can cause screen flashing etc
- Disable Settings>Power>Fastboot mode, this can cause incompatibility with certain apps
reboot your phone and report back
As you already i know it works great for me by disabling it, and again thank you for bringing it up eariler.
What is the page address in the video?
Edit: it's still stutter after disabling it, it's smoother in my htc desire/ bravo :S.
I agree the browser is smooth. No problems here in fact I am amazed that so many threads are here with complaints. I have owned lot of mobiles including the dhd, evo 3d, gs2 and iPhone 4s also galaxy nexus. And I must say this mobile is beautiful in hardware and software.
Btw
Gsmarena.com
It should be smoother and removes the lag when scrolling up and down. It won't remove the slight stutter when the text reflow kicks in however. 2 diffrent things

Go to settings/Power then uncheck fastboot option and restart your phone.

browser bug
Guys the glitches in browser or corruption of the url only happen when you have something in the notification tray for example you are downloading something from the market or Amazon appstore side by side or it can be anything like a message or a missed call being shown in notification tray . Just clear all notifications and use the browser there will be no glitches or corruption ever . Even in the video posted by OP the notification bar is clear . I think a future software update by HTC will resolve this software bug.

Holy crap! Disabled the 3-Finger-HTC-Thingy and WOW! Browser performance increased BIG time! forum.xda-developers.com (Forum Overview) used to lag ALOT before. After disabling the option and reboot, I opened the browser again and went straight to the XDA Forum Overview. Pinch-To-Zoom, Double-Tap and scrolling feel like they're about 300% smoother now. No lag whatsoever, except for the small lag for text reflow and orientation changing.
BIG thank you! Browsing is now way more fun

yes because the gesture setting botches the screen multi-touch abilities in order to capture their gesture which sends the image to the Medialink, its cropping 10 finger detection into 3 finger which is surely confusing apps
Typical stupid HTC weird feature/self induced bug!
seeing that the One X 10 finger capture videos, i think we have Nvidia's DirectTouch implemented?

Anyone else experiencing their phone to be slightly slower AT times then when on Sense 4.0? Just sometimes my home screen and other parts of the system will just feel generally slower. Try a factory reset or if your rooted with a custom recovery just format cache and dalvic cache. Then Give the phone 2 full charges from at least 20% in at least a 2 day span.
It could be a bad app or mod that is causing the issues. Usually it's never a bad ota update that slows the device. Also I recommend a backup program.

Not so great after all...
While I don't notice that my phone is any slower after the update to 4.1, the update hasn't solved my WiFi issue. Which I wasn't really expecting it to, but they did say it should even out the signal, it hasn't. I couldn't tell the difference about the 3D widget stacking or whatever on the stock launcher, 'nor could I notice a difference when opening the app drawer or swiping through homescreens.
That is not to say that the update didn't do anything. I know that benchmarks don't prove much of anything, some argue that they do. I don't really care too much for them, but out of curiosity sake, I ran some. Now, my phone is bone stock, I can't unlock the bootloader because my volume rocker cable is broken. So I'm not rooted, nothing. With Sense 4.0 and Android 4.0.3 I scored horribly, worse than the One X in the stats, at about 3900. I don't know what was going on, but I ran that twice and got the same result. Anyway, after the update to 4.1 and 4.0.4 I scored 5928 and that is with Apex Launcher and Holo Locker locked in memory.
Take from the benchmarks what you will! The 4.1 update does not work miracles, but it's a step in the right direction!

I am very serious, I found it to be very smooth to begin with on 4.0... I didn't have my screens filled with lots of widgets or shortcuts though. That might make a difference. I haven't tried using a livewallpaper yet either. I do notice that Recent Apps seems to be a lot smoother, but with the stock launcher, I don't see much. The app drawer might be quicker to open than before.

2.17 is brisk
try to wipe or free some space on your SD card
I'm experiencing the same after my ota - its great that the menu bar has gone but the home screen and recent apps just feel a bit sluggish.
For example, when opening recent apps, the current app will appear but other apps to the left of it appear after a slight delay. Swiping home screens is definitely more sluggish here; before ota it was a bit jerky (when swiping, home screen would occasionally jump from one position to another, but in general they followed finger location exactly), but now they lag slightly behind my finger, and instead of jumping positions they pause for a moment and then continue to move smoothly. I think this could be caused by the business calendar app though, it usually only happens on that page...
The problem with the launcher closing when a few apps are open is still just as bad as it was before (and still takes about 15-20 seconds to load the launcher again, which does seem a bit excessive...)
But despite the complaining above, it's really not the end of the world and I don't think it's worth bothering to do a factory reset and see if it works although I'm gradually growing to hate sense and might build up the courage to root and flash some experimental roms soon...

Well, recents apps loads of moves perfectly.
Home screens are silky smooth.
If your not getting that, go install a RUU and fix it.

Hi,
Had the same problem. Turns out at least on my device after update to 2.17 the dev option "Don't keep activities" was ticked.
I know it wasn't before.
Wonder if it was a battery saving measure. Anyway made my phone sluggish so I turned it off, all back to normal.
Cheers

Question Software Annoyances!

Hello everyone,
Just received my new phone a few days back. Love how it looks, my first ZTE phone.
A few questions:
1. When I set maps navigation, and press home, it won't go picture in picture, the screen flashes like it's going to, then does nothing.
2. In most apps swiping back or home button requires a second swipe for confirmation. Can this be disabled, as just my other phones didn't have this with maps or many other apps?
我的 LINE 也沒辦法正常提醒。
1. It works well on mine with Google maps. I think you probably need to go to settings of that navigation app and allow picture-in-picture
2. If you don't want the confirm, you need to turn off the "full screen anti-false touch".
XDA members, I am having issues with trying to close ALL background apps on my Nubia 8 Pro. What occurs on my device when I attempt to close all background apps, there is always 1 remaining which I have to swipe away manually??? There aren't any locks on my apps, and it happens randomly. I don't understand why this occurs when I hit the circled "X" to close and afterwards it states "Accelerated".
Any thoughts??? It is very annoying to say the least.
Same problem, except when I check all my apps are still opened lol.

Exactly right!!! Little nuisances like this are what is causing me frustrations! I am hoping this gets fixed in a software update release soon or custom ROM's.
There is also the issue with blocking Heads-up pop-ups in apps. They still continue to occur.

Yeah I'm coming from a Xiaomi 12S Ultra. Big differences in software. MIUI 14 is very crisp and finely trimmed.
Red Magic as a first experience from a software perspective has not been great.
Hoping for an update soon. So far issues with swipe gestures, fingerprint takes much too long to register, multitasking is an issue, should be able to remap things like the switch on the side, and the shoulder triggers.
There's a lot of work that needs to be done.
Beautiful design though.
So I'm reading on the reddit thread that there are certain fingerprint animations that make the fingerprint recognition better and faster. Anyone confirm this one and maybe suggest the best animation?
That wouldn't make any sense. It should project the same amount of light through for detection no matter which animation.

Yet I just received a response from him saying that with the 4th fingerprint animation counting from left to right he hasn't missed a single one today while yesterday he had a 70% success rate. How is your fingerprint sensor? Any fails? Which is your animation?
Good day, I am experiencing this capped 5g connection using rm8, speed is capped at 34-ish mbps, while 2.4g is at 150+, using same network with galaxy note 9, both bands reaches 200+mbps

Hi , can you tell me what's happened with multitasking ?
The latest update has fixed this issue.
Register the Same finger Multiple times!!!
I have the same Finger registered 3 time and I have yet to have a problem.
it does have issues with just 1 register.
I can say that the Fingerprint reader in my Asus ROG 3 phone was way worse then this one.
i couldn't even use the one in the ROG phone

China OEMs are like that. Even Oneplus oxygenOS, xiaomi MIUI also the doing the same. If you are using whatsapp, and u cleared the recent tasks at the whatsapp screen, the whatsapp will still be opened. The only way u can clear all recents is to exit from whatsapp first to home screen, and clear all.
I dont even get the reason why they do that and cant just clear everything from the recents page
I also realised PIP in youtube doesnt work when using gesture navigation. The only wait to trigger PIP to work for youtube is to keep swiping back till the youtube app exits..
Just by swiping up to home screen doesnt trigger PIP

It does pip if you swipe to home when you are in fullscreen mode or when you press a notification from another app. Same happens for every app that supports pip that I have tried.

Translation is horrible. Hungarian language is missing on most part and software update menu is displayed in Spanish istead of Hungarian or English.

@GodKingKnight, have there been any improvements in the UI and those pesky nuisances that plagued the RedMagic 8 Pro since the past few updates have rolled out? I ended up selling mine to go with a folding device, but I am considering picking it back up again.... that is given the firmware updates have addressed much of the issues that plagued the device in its initial release.
