Im trying to root my wifes mt3gs, shes finally sick of espresso amd ready for cm!
I noticed theres about 3 differrent methods to root it..
If anyone has used these methods and can tell me which was more user friendly I would eternaly greatful, of course i prefer a "1-click-root" method but i dont think that exsists does it?
thanx in advance..
i have tried two methods, exploid was the most straight forward and easiest. cm6 does not yet support bluetooth.

One click method? Never seen that for the slide. I used Eugenes method to root which is in the slide Rom bible and so far I've been able to root all 3 slides Ive ended up with very easily. You will have to use command prompt on ur computer but if u watch the video its really not hard at all. This is my.first android phone and it was simple for me so try it out an let us know.

go with exploid
I agree with whgarner, I used the exploid method and that was fast and efficient
I used this method and strongly recommend it: HTC Slide root guide from cyanogenmod
The guide assumes that you have already setup Android SDK on your computer and that you have installed the correct drivers for your phone so if you have'nt done that already you will need to, as all the methods I have seen so far for the Slide require ADB. Lemme know if you got any questions.

First off thanks for your response,
Im assuming that this guide works with the latest OTA.. btw can you contact me on gtalk? [email protected] (for quick response support) i just wanna make sure my wife gets her phone back asap. That way if i hit any walls i can get over them quickly and efficiently..
thanks again..
Pardon my ignorance -I have found some info from the forums as per the specifics of rooting and - im considering rooting my slide (as it seems 2.2 is never going to come) and go with CyanogenMod-6.1.1. Im never rooted a device but that part doesnt sound so hard (ive used linux before, etc) but my main concern question - is there a way i can make my own ROM code - or rather read out the rom code of my phone currently (pre-root), this way - should
a) i not have a good root experience (something not working right)
or
b) 2.2 comes out - via OTA
I can "go back" to my orinal rom code?
Moreover, is there a way I can go back and restore the original rom code that i backed up pre-root? I dont even know if reading out my own code can be done or if i must rely on some factory rom code available in some "slide bible" that has alluded me. Cant seem to find any slide rom bible as of yet.
Can anyone point me in the right direction or help ease my concerns...
Also ive read about "Titanium Backup" and 'Clockwork' and 'amon-ra' -- can any of these be used to backup current rom code prior to rooting ? or perhaps just after rooting?
New Bible:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=924793
Old Bible:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=704567
Old Bible definitely has stock rom. I glossed over the new one, didn't see them immediately, but I'm sure they're there.
Titanium Backup is for Apps, Clockwork and amon-ra are different types of Recovery. Within those two(or atleast Clockwork) you can make a "Nandroid Backup" which is what what you're looking for. It will backup your ROM/settings and stuff.
When you root you're going to be flashing an Engineer version that allows you to keep root, so you should make a nandroid of that. In the Bibles you'll find a link to a pretty easy root method:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=754020
Hope this helps.
i am new to this android stuff. but i flash or install new roms all the time to play with them, and in the old bible is the factory rom, i have tested it and gone back to factory and then rerooted just to see if i could. it is all possable with the little know how i have of linux.

Can some one please help
I have been trying to root my mytouch slide for quite some time. I have read post and followed directions on countless websites and even watched a few videos.
The first method i tried was the one where i had to go into command terminal, using sdk tools, and catch my phone in adb with "loop". This never worked because adb would only detect my phone when it was booted normally but when i would boot into recovery mode nothing would come up.
The second method was the one where i had to download a few files and put them in a folder in C:\ and from that directory in command terminal i had to run "my root" along with other commands that were supposed to push all the files I needed to my phones sd card. This didn't work because when i rebooted the phone into the bootloader the "ESPRIMG.zip" wasnt detected. So , im guessing, without that flashed first i cant install any other roms or upgrades.
I dont know what else to do and i would really appreciate it if someone would be able to help me finally root my fun
Sorry if i posted in the wrong spot or something.

Those two didn't work for me especially with the ota update. Try this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=754020 or http://forums.t-mobile.com/t5/myTouch-3G-Slide/Easy-root-unroot-Froyo-for-all/td-p/649239 <<This one should have screenshots w/ each step.

Thanks. Ima check it out and see how it goes.
Hopefully this is exactly what i need.
Ima post my results.
Also You can backup your current rom with clockwork and restore it whenever needed.

If you want 2.2 OTA Go to CR's post in the development section and it should be one of the first. You have to root before installing as it is yet unreleased and it is unsigned. You can get all of the info on rooting/unrooting you need at theunlockr.com if you do not like root(which I highly doubt). There is an unrooting tutorial on theunlocker also.

that all sounds great but my problem is that i cant root my phone so i wouldnt be able to install that anyway
@han-shinibi
thanx again for those links
i used the second one and i got it to work.
At first i was having the same problem with the hboot not recognizing the ESPRIMG.zip but after reading alot of comments someone gave me the idea to backup my sd card and to format the sd card and try again. I backup all the zip files i had from the previous attempt and i formated the card from the phone and then connected it to my laptop on "disk drive" and formatted it from windows also(I used FAT32). I uploaded all the zip files and started the process all over again and it work this time(attempt #23). Now im happily running cm6.
OK, I am far from new to this. I have unlocked many WinMo phones and now rooted many Android phones. I have an Evo that was rooted with ADB back on 2.1 and have rooted many friends phones.
I am using UnRevoked and I have installed the HBoot Drivers. Now it says connected, then Pushing Recovery, then stays there forever. I even let it stay connected overnight saying that, I woke up the next morning with the same screen, it isnt doing anything. Is there a different, better method??
UnrEVOked is the 'best' method.

It will have the answers for ya.
Have you installed the usb drivers, back in the day that gave me the biggest issue.
Sent from my Redeemed Incredible using the XDA App.
after reading literally thousands of posts about unrevoked and finding that most issues turn out to be simple fixes or retries, and having used it myself w no issues, this is probably the most supported and used way to root...the gold standard...not to say there arent weird curcumstances it might not work... But its a total work horse ...if you have the skills to hack the hack im sure you could use the exploit and manhandle it... I usually type something wrong, disconnect at the wrong time, or execute "doooh!" Moments, and with the swiftness....after making sure the drivers are right, give the autopilot of unrevoked another go...its really the way too do it....
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
If all else fails, if you know someone with a Mac computer that version of Unrevoked is simplified and you do not need to install drivers. Simply download unrevoked and root.
A friend of mine helped me root my Inc using the Mac version and it was a quick process. I have no idea how the driver/pc version of Unrevoked works as it has steps that Mac users do not need in order to root. I've been rooted for about a month with no issues yet.
I just recently bought a G2 and updated its software...But I'm clueless where to start/how to root the phone. I looked through some stickies, but I got lost right away. Can anyone help or show me something a lot easier to follow? Thanks
Word to the wise, if the rooting process seemed too hard to do do not do it and stay stock, lot less risk of your phone bricking.

Kerner 2.6.32.17

Just follow the steps on the wiki like a member said. I had no experience whatsoever but managed to learn a little adb and successfully rooted my phone. Use the rage gfree method. It is simple with the least chance of bricking

The Wiki guide is right here, if you haven't found it yet:

Just read up as much as you can before you start, and follow the instruction very carefully, and you will be fine.
The Gingerbread (Android 2.3) OTA that is currenlty being deployed is not currently rootable (and requires downgrading first to root), but you should be okay since you are still on the T-Mobile 2.2 ROM still.

Could someone post the Windows USB Drivers for the Vision?

Can somebody also post T-Mobile G2 and HTC Desire Z: recovery-clockwork-3.0.2.4-vision.img (md5sum cbc776e7941ebf030e9fa39473d5b6f1)

Will this method work after doing a temp root? It seems a lot easier
As far as the usb drivers go, I used pda.net from the market. If after you install pda.net it still sees your phone as usb mass storage only, then unplug your phone, remove the current driver and plug it back in. It should ask you if you want to set up your new hardware and show it as an android device

NO. And yes. Confused? Here is a link to the method myself and many others have used: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=928160
This is an "easy" method using Visionary to temp root ONLY and then G-free for perm root. Do not be tempted to check "perm-root now" on Visionary since there is a high brick risk. Anyhow, this method runs scripts so much less chance for typo errors... just follow the simple directions to the letter and you will be rooted in no time. Works like a dream.
That was easy! hah, this was a lot easier than what the wiki told me to do. Thank you so much
edit:i restored to my back up (phew ), but why does the CM screen keep on repeating after I try installing 7.03?
i rooted everything fine, but after installing CM 7, the boot logo keeps on repeating, and the home screen won't pop up. is there a fix for this? :/
No prob.
Did you do a full wipe before flashing CM7? Even if you did, I'd recommend a "Superwipe". This is a zip you flash from recovery like anything else, and it really gets to everything on your phone's memory. I don't have the direct link but you can download it here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=991254
It's down the page a bit, in the "attached files". The one on the top called SuperWipeG2+. Also, the ROM on that page is a nice one if you're looking for stuff other than CM. (Though CM is a good place to start)
I didn't do a complete wipe, I just did something else instead. I figured it out before checking this up, but thank you a lot for the help. +Thanks
I just brought a Defy.I going to install MotoGinger 2.3.4.Since I am a newbie I need a step by step guide for installing a custom rom.Starting from rooting the phone, up to the installing custom rom.I searched the forum, but still i didn't find a step by step guide.Could someone provide me a link or explain me?
I'll try to help you...
- Start with any Froyo
- Install root with SuperOneClick 1.9 from PC
- Install Defy2ndInit from Market, open app and choose "Install 2ndinit Recovery"
- Extract MotoGinger-test5.zip in SDCARD, inside folder clockworkmod\backup\
- Reboot
- Choose Custom Recovery from boot menu, Wipe data, Go back
- Choose Backup and Restore, Advanced restore (system/only) and choose MotoGinger-test5
- Reboot (hold volume [+] when blue light appears)
- Black Bootloader screeen will show up
- Run RSD Lite 1.9 from PC and install fixed-sbf.
- Choose Stock Recovery from boot menu and Wipe data again.
Reboot.
Sorry my English.
I can't seem to get my Defy rooted with SuperOneClick 1.9.5.
I'm doing it on Linux. SuperOneClick.exe freezes up when doing "chmod psneuter".
Will SuperOneClick still work even though I did an OTA update to 2.2? Or am I pretty much out of luck until a new exploit is discovered?
i use ver 1.8 and it works fine with official 2.2..
That makes me think my setup on Debian isn't quite right. I don't have the lib32 stuff installed, can't seem to find it anywhere for Debian.
I'll setup a Windows install in VirtualBox later tonight and try it from there to see if I get better results. If that fails, I'll give it a try on my work notebook that runs Windows XP.
Do you know of any reason why 1.8 would work but 1.9.5 would not work scottie1973?
And vgowtham97, sorry for sorta hijacking your thread here, but we're both after the same goal I think. If I can get this stuff working I'll gladly help you and let you know what I did to get it all working.
In Windows XP, for example, we need to install .NET Framework 2.0 to run SuperOneClick .
In Linux there is a compatible platform, but I don't remember the name of it.
.NET's Linux counterpart is Mono.
I still think lib32 is required, in addition to Mono. At least that's what a how-to I read said, and I can't find it anymore unfortunately. I'll dig a bit deeper tomorrow to see if I can find it.
Also, no success using superoneclick on Win XP running in VirtualBox on Debian. It seems to stall with adb and looks like it's "waiting for device". If I close the adb terminal that is open, superoneclick proceeds but eventually tells me "device not found".
I'll give it a go on my work Win XP notebook tomorrow.
Should I be trying the psneuter exploit?

Why does everybody say you have to start with any Froyo? What if you want to keep the option to downgrade to the original 2.1?
I read here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=966537
If you come from Android 2.1 and never flashed Android 2.2 you can use the fixed sbf-files method. With this method you will have a option to downgrade to you personal stock Android 2.1 via direct sbf flash.
Then you must not upgrade to Froyo??

Im running 2.3.4 from a nandroid and a fixed SBF (from the eclair ROM that was originally shipped on the phone) If you want to install a full SBF then maybe you would need a
Froyo ROM preinstalled Just asking because i'm running it from an eclair Preinstalled ROM??
search xda dev for gingerbreak rooted my froyo fine, I couldnt get any superoneclicks to work either.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1044765
Can someone kindly also give the steps to downgrade back to froyo?
Short answer if you made a android backup restore that via custom recovery then flash appropriate fixed froyo sbf file. Longer answers to that is in most gingerbread rom threads.
I do have USB Debugging enabled. I also unmounted my sdcard hoping that would help, but no luck.
I tried SuperOneClick 1.9.5 on my work notebook (running Win XP) this morning and no luck there either.
SuperOneClick 2 is in public beta now, I will give that a try when I get a minute. I'd post a link to the announcement at shortfuse.org, but I can't post links yet.
Just so I'm clear, I don't need to install a ROM after rooting, correct? I can just root and continue to use my phone as-is? I mostly want root so I can run a few apps that require root. Not really interested in upgrading to gingerbread or anything like that. Although MIUI looks interesting and very beautiful.
Thanks for your help everyone who has replied thus far!
yes you can just root and play around with all that entails. Take it at your own pace no need to rush, become comfortable with it one stage at a time as for rooting as I said before if superoneclick dont work try the gingerbreak apk listed above its just root it makes no other changes.
I was on froyo 2.2.2 official only way I could root was gingerbreak
OK, I decided to give it a go with the gingerbreak exploit instead of psneuter and it worked (with superoneclick 1.9.5)!
I am still on official 2.2 from Motorola and T-Mobile US but now have root access to my device!
Thanks everyone!
I didn't know that was an option in superoneclick, good man glad it worked.
I'm glad too.
Yah, I think gingerbreak has been in superoneclick since at least 1.7. I couldn't get it to work on anything older than 1.9.5 though.
Looks like SuperOneClick 2 beta 1 is packaged now on shortfuse.org. Its default exploit is "auto". The only other two options are psneuter and gingerbreak. Wonder if "auto" starts with psneuter and moves onto trying gingerbreak if psneuter fails.
UPDATE:
I found the post that said lib32 libraries need to be installed for SuperOneClick to work under linux:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=8699742&postcount=537
It's a how-to written by the author of SuperOneClick. That post says linux users need to install lib32ncurses5 and lib32stdc++ along with Mono. Problem is, I can't find the lib32 stuff for Debian anywhere. It exists for Ubuntu. I can't even find the source for those libraries so I can compile myself.
