ok this is my issue i am getting tired of having to go through my contact list and reassign ringtones to my contacts as i use ring tones for each one of my friends so i know before i even pick up the phone who is calling
I also like to flash custom roms and have had to do full wipes of my phone quite often and it is starting to seem that happens everytime i get my phone how i want it...
So I am now wondering if there is a way to either back up my contact list in a form that would be restore able that i would be able to just restore it when i reload my phone was thinking some sort of app that is a manager of contacts and ringtones.
Oh it also has to be free.
Handcent does keep my ring tone assignments when i reload it but i want the stock dialer google contacts to be able to be restored like that...
So what is the best free ringtone contact manager that is restore able across roms?
Dialer One does all this stuff, and is free.

I have about 13k text messages stored on my EVO and need to clear them. Don't really wanna do a reset or NAND restore b/c i'm outta practice and would probably find a way to break something.
anyway, does anyone know where texts are store internally? attempting to delete them via Handcent and HTC messaging app creates FC and kills my phone.
any help is appreciated.
thanks.
hp.
Sms backup and restore in the market will let you delete everything in one shot if that's what your trying to do.

i know this is a huge bump, there are other similar topics but this was the easiest for me to find.
Looks like the official gingerbread update from sprint lets you delete messages A LOT faster than froyo.
Just put my phone into airplane mode and turned off the screen timeout so i could delete a 500+ message plus conversation. it took like 3 seconds.
THANK YOU HTC.
Hello all,
I often hear people talking about flashing new ROMs every few days. When flashing the newest CW7, it clears out all my apps and settings. No problem, I use Titanium Backup and restored all the apps, and restored *most* of the settings (I'm never entirely clear what settings are ok to restore and what aren't).
For those who often flash new ROMs, how do you restore things like your widget placement and icon placement on your home screens? Do you just do that manually or is there some trick I'm missing?
What about voicemails? I normally lose all my messages too. Is there some backup/restore routine I'm missing?
Usually I have adw and reinstall the apps I had previously but taking over apps from roms is dangerous. And I back up my adw settings and desktop configuration. That saves me a lot of time. As for voicemail no idea but I know myback up root will save your phone contacts and sms pretty much everything.

Hi all,
Having looked around I don't see anyone with the same issue as mine with regards to SMS.
I just got a new Nexus 2 days ago, and got the 4.0.4 update by doing the clear cache thing. All good.
I installed SMSBackup+ and started to restore all my text messages. Now I have about 21,000. Honestly I have no idea how I have that many, its possible some are dupes or something, I really don't know. But basically I left it to restore them overnight and woke up this morning with all my messages restored. Lovely.
But now, I tried to send a text to someone and it just froze. I quit to the home screen, went to go back to the message app but it just sits with a black screen doing nothing.
I presume its got something to do with it trying to load all the messages for the first time or something like that but I'm a bit gutted that it can't handle it. My old Galaxy S could handle them all with ease.
Is this a known issue on the GNex or am I asking too much with the volume of SMSs??
I'm a bit gutted if I've bought this brand new state of the art phone and it can't handle what my two year old SGS could!
It might have been the case that a couple of messages were corrupt. Try clearing the sms data and restoring again but only blocks at a time. If that doesn't work the messaging app might have an issue since your now running ics.
This could be an issue that hasn't been explored as your not the average user. I for 1 limit my messages at 200 a contact.

Thanks RT, but its so slow/congested it won't let me delete them either! I tried by going into the message app and choosing delete threads.
It loads every time I reboot the phone but if I do anything on it at all, it just shows me a black screen.
On first load I can see all the messages, but if I go into one of them, even one that is only 2 threads long, it just freezes on me.
Any idea how I can delete the SMS data without going through the message app?
Or am I staring down the barrel at a factory reset? (this isn't the end of the world as I only got the phone yesterday and haven't really installed anything yet)
Right then,
So instead of trying to do something with the stock message app to delete the sms messages, I downloaded delete old messages app and ran that before loading up the stock message software.
I think the next time I restore them I will try and put the 200 cap on them like my SGS did (I thought this was a limitation of the phone not an actual setting that I could adjust! I presume I'll find it in the stock SMS settings somewhere?)
Thanks for the help RT.
I've had that issue since froyo. anytime I restore thousands of texts, the messaging app just hangs. On the rare occasion it'll come to life but for the most part unusable. only solution seems to be to restore a small portion of your texts or have a blank slate

Quit being so popular. Too many SMS.
I made a second label in my GMail I call SMS Backup and every few weeks I'll change my backed-up messages from SMS to the Backup label so when/if I wipe and restore, it doesn't pull in all my messages. If I need anything, I can easily search for it.

To delete your messages / settings go into the sms app under Settings-Apps and clear all your data.
Yes you find the sms limit setting in the general setting within the sms app.

I've flashed mimicry 1.5 ROM. But it has this little bug. When set personal ringtone of a contact sometimes it plays on call, sometimes play default ringtone. I google it but can't find solution. I never had this problem with my stock ROM (2.3.3). Any ideas?
ive noticed this on various roms as well, it would be rather annoying if it were a bigger deal to me but i just stopped using ringtones allocated to one person. the fix would be take that sound from the sdcard and install it directly itno the system ringtones
easiest way may be a file explorer like root explorer, but you could use terminal or adb or various other methods as well

Okay, so here it is...
Same exact thing has happened to my wife's phone, but not mine. We even went to the store and tried a brand new phone and same thing! But...We just figured it out! Okay, so here we go...
Edit: If you are not a user of Google contacts, then do not do the merge described below because this will overwrite your phone contacts with your google contacts. Only do this step if all your Google contacts are up to date and include all contacts in your phone.
From within your computer, go to your Google contacts, the is a "My Contacts" label. At the bottom, there is an "Other" label. Somewhere in there are duplicates, so the phone doesn't know which to assign the cutom ringtone to. Go through and clean up all Google contacts, plus add the "My Contacts" to any contact that doesn't have it. Then delete any from the "other" list and any doubles in the contacts. Then, on your phone, open contacts and go to menu-more-settings-save new contacts to, and select Google. (Trust me on this one...PLASE DO THIS.) Then go to contacts, menu, and select Merge with Google. (You may lose contacts that you've put in your phone from your phone, but this is the only time this will happen.) From this point on, anything done in the Google contacts will instantly update in your phone and vise-versa, but more importantly, your ringtones should work when assigned to individual contacts.
If that doesn't work, let me know, there is one other thing to try. Good Luck!

It is important to now that this bug appear from time to time. Also i've tried to use app as contacts and phone replacement but unfortunately it using contact & contacts storage and it's a little bit useless
What i did so far and it doesn't work:
Formatted phone numbers without dashes and spaces
Tried to store contacts locally and to google contacts
Tried to convert all of my ringtones to the *.ogg for minimizing resource needed
Tried 3rd party app
I'm open for suggestions. From other thread i realize the problem may be is this little lag that appear from time to time
I used to use SMS backup plus to save texts from the ex wife to my gmail account. On my OG EVO it worked perfect. With the LG Optimus G it doesn't save incoming texts to my gmail account, only outbound. First, does anyone know a fix for this?
If there is no fix, can anyone suggest another app that will backup texts to my gmail? Currently, I'm using the stock messaging app, but not opposed to a 3rd party app like go sms pro. As long as I can specify which thread to backup to my gmail. Would like it to have a nice popup option too when the screen if off (like SMS Popup), but that is just a nice option not needed.
I like to backup these texts from her in case she decides to try some funny court stuff, or doesn't remember agreeing to something related to our child. It's a safety measure.
Thanks.
I have been using that app with success, it backs up inbound and outbound in order on my gmail... Thats weird, what rom are you on?

I would recommend an app called sms backup +
It will backup your messages to a label of your choice in your account

I have used this and it works.
My personal recommendation is Google Voice. While it doesn't restore messages to your phone, it will keep a record of every single text message sent/received that can also be accessed online.
As a tech, SMS Backup is a nightmare. I can't count the number of times a phone has come in with thousands of text messages (the record is 43K messages) that barely boots because of it.
The customer has SMS Backup installed and after we spend the time doing a hard reset they then restore the text messages. Now all that time was wasted as the phone needs to be hard reset yet again and it's somehow our fault. In some cases where there is a tin of messages, SMS Backup corrupts messages and messaging app data.
Now that I've given my $0.02, if you are going to use a backup app, try "Super Backup". It's backups are very similar to the Cellebrite machine that we techs use to backup contacts and text messages. I've even been able to restore messages on the Cellebrite using a "Super Backup" SMS backup file.
From the Super Backup thread;
"You can backup apps & contacts & SMS & Call logs & Bookmarks & Calendars to the SD Card or Gmail."
Now before you say Titanium Backup. Try to run Titanium Backup without root. You can't. Super Backup only needs and checks for root if you try backing up your apps.

That is the app that isn't backing up my incoming messages.
Since a few of you aren't having any issues with it, what settings are being used? As I said before, I had no issues on my evo 4g but doesn't want to save those texts from her with the LG.
I have no reason or desire to restore these texts back onto my phone. I just want them backed up to my gmail like sms backup + does, just in case I need them to cover myself.

Never thought of using google voice that way. I guess it might be time to integrate voice with my sprint number soon then. Does it put the sms into gmail in a similar way that sms backup plus does?
I find it funny as I just went through some of those backup, and it did backup some incoming texts when I first got the phone. It just hasn't been working right since right before x-mas. I have now installed an older version of the app to see if that might work. If not I will look more into google voice. I already have gvoice but never really used it.
You will go to google.com/voice and login and there will be a text message label with all of them, it does work very well for that

I'm not spying on my ex wife. I don't care what she is doing or up to. Just keeping a record of our conversations since we have a kid together and I'm sure she is doing the same thing. This is only for covering myself if we ever end up in court again.
Point is that the app isn't working. Still trying to figure out why.

I did before I started this thread, but haven't heard back yet. I might have figured it out in a round about way. Testing it now, but it seems to save both outgoing and incoming when I tell it to backup everyone and not just a specific group.
