This is discussed elsewhere, but deep within other threads, so I wanted to give it it's own thread to help people in finding out how to prevent Zune from relocking WP7 devices. It only works on HTC devices for now because TouchXplorer only works for HTC devices.
1. Install TouchXplorer
2. Install HTC Connection Setup
3. Download and extract this zip file to your PC.
4. Deploy the extracted XAP to your device
5. If XBMOD.Files.Deployer does not automatically run, run it from your App list on your device.
6. Using TouchXplorer on your device, copy \My Documents\My Ringtones\CustClear.provxml to \Windows\
7. Run HTC Connection Setup on your device, hit the ok button (with the check mark) to let it provision.
8. You're done.
If you unlock with ChevronWP7, apply this hack, and then for some reason your phone relocks, refer to DanielNTX's post to get it unlocked again. You need to install a new certificate, provided on his post.
All credit goes to xboxmod and his HTC Registry Editing thread and HTC WP7 Apps thread.
Hope it works for me... "thanks"
I tried this before and it didn't work. It revoked every application I had downloaded.
Yeah I had this done for a while but my question is can I uninstall the program once I've done everything else? It looks ugly in my app list =/
This Didn't work for me, had finally got it unlocked, came back 3 hours later, connected with this installed and also with flight mode on and now my phone's relocked. Make sure to block Windows Mobile Zune Communication Service from your firewall, while that was blocked it didn't relock

You can uninstall it. The provxmls stay in the My Ringtones folder.

I don't bother with flight mode or any of the other tweaks and it still works for me. What device do you have?
Thanks. This works well. Finally, I don't need to unlock everytime after zune syncing.
Do you think this patch will be removed by MS at the next update as well as chevron unlock?
I think that chevron (the phone unlocker) doesn't work after OSupdate.
Yes, the method that ChevronWP7 uses will be disabled in the update... but that doesn't mean it won't be cracked open again.
After applying this patch there are 2 files in the My Ringtones dir - one of them is restoreCustClear.provxml file, which means it will revert the registry changes done by the first provxml file (custClear.provxml).
Do you think that if I activate my phone the Marketplace will start working as usual - downloading any apps without the error "can't get info right now... come back after a little while" , AFTER I've installed the above patch for not relocking the phone? I.e. in other words can I side-load apps and simultaneously continue to use the legacy Marketplace without any problems?
@thesecondsfade, applied the patch on my HD2.
Thanks

Yes, you can sideload and download from the Marketplace simultaneously. I do it now on my HD7. It should be the same with an activated HD2.

I am just about to do this until i saw this!
Please confirm that this hack works!
PS: Unlocked my device yesterday and now it's still unlocked.. I downloaded and deployed youtube, shazam and other stuff without problem.. Strange though cause every one had this problem after unlocking and sync with Zune...But I don't!
So...do i have to make this hack or not?
Thanks
This works like a charm

You sure you deployed the XAP? The path is \My Documents\My Ringtones
This method works like a charm! Thank you! I can now synchronise my phone with Zune without the phone getting relocked by Zune
Just love it!
Yes i deployed those 3 apps on my device...weird!
Brilliant
Works flawless on my HD2

Try it again. See what happens.
Locking... Was it all Zune?
I was wondering, since Chevron was able to work only with Zune, and if you wish to install
a new update on your device, you must update the Zune first.
Is there a possibility that Zune is the one that makes all the problems?
Maybe they altered the ports that Zune uses to comunicate with WP7 device,
and since the chevron used HTTPS, they're not compatible any more,
and therefore, they can not comunicate.
I know it sounds like conspiracy theory, but i was checking protocols and have found some inconsistencies...
Maybe im wrong...
Your opinions?
NoDo doesn't require an extra Zune update, so no.

Unfortunately, pre-Nodo aksed for Zune to update...
At least it asked me to update it...
That's where my doubts come from
for me, when i couldn't get wp7 unlocked i noticed that either zune or windows was changing the host file just as chevron tried to connect... no matter what i did ie changed values , edit user rights, even tried system with read only rights ,... something kept changing the host file to "my ip.windowsdevelopers.com" now i use a win7 instalation in a virtual drive with no zune or windows updates at all. seems to work for me..
Interesting solution...
I have tried installing Zune on another computer and tried to run Chevron,
but no luck... All I'm getting is error, that Chev. can't make connection with device.
Current state of OS: Build 7008 (That's pre-Nodo right?)
Cheers!
yep 7008 is pre nodo... i unlocked with chevron with that os. used vmware workstation. clean install of win7 (no updates except windows phone 7 usb drivers) then zune. unlocked first time.
you may have to re set your phone?
Well i did hard reset my phone for a couple of times, but had no luck...
I shall wait now... I will probably try some more on other computers, but
if I don't succeed, I will play by MS rules and do the NoDo.
After that, the waiting for a jailbrake shall be waited upon
P.S. A question, bit off topic.
Is there any way to insert custom ringtone to a non-Cheved device?
I can't access My Ringtones folder via Windows Explorer, even though
i changed registry on my computer to be able to access the phone as
a regular usb device...
Tnx up front, for any info provided
not really.... even if you did put them in your music folder zune on your phone doesn't seem to read the id3 tags and calls them unknown without names.
try..... fresh install win7 then connect phone aand get drivers... then zune... then chevron,
Yep, that's the problem with ringtones, or music at all...
I will try that with Win7, because i curently have no other options
Anyway, many thanks for your help!
First I want to say I tested this on my own HTC 7 Pro and all you need is the DFT HSPL and some time
This is the first time i wrote a tutorial so please correct me if there is a something wrong...
1. Check if you have installed HSPL on your device
2. Install the 7720 DFT Custom rom Can be found here
3.After you installed the Rom and your phone is rebootet complete the setup and connect to the internet (wifi or mobile)
4. Copy this link http://dl.dropbox.com/u/7645529/DFRouter.xap and paste it in the Internet Explorer
5.You should now have a white screen with the text Tap to open the File DFRouter.xap tap on the text and leave Internet Explorer
6.Go to your application menu there should now be the DFRouter App put your phone back in zune mode and all is working just fine
Please give me a Feedback if this fix worked for you and if it was helpful ^^
not using it anymore my phone can't detect pc Zune and charging.had to send to service centre again and they change the mobo.I believe that WP7 is totally different from wm6.I also believe many have problem using it.
It really work
Thanks a lot & DFT Lukas94 my HTC hd7 is back in zune mode after three months.

The point here is that you can download and instal XAPs directly from the net instead of doing it through Zune and sideloading. The key to fixing the Zune mode on your phone is just to get DFRouter installed on your phone. Installing directly from the OP's dropbox account will allow it to install and will allow you to click the button "Zune Mode" to get your phone back to being able to sync with Zune again.
Router mode on Mango breaks the phone's connection to the PC entirely, which means you won't be able to charge your phone if in router mode on Mango... but if you turn your phone off and plug it into the wall-charger, it should charge... which will allow you to then install the XAP from the OP's dropbox account.

anyway thanks,i'm not going to risk again. I'm still on nodo.
Thanks a lot, my connection to Zune is back after 1 month
I´m pleased that it worked but I have some bad news... I don´t have a WP7 Phone anymore :/
sorry guys but I hope my tutorial helped you
My windows 7 is acting a bit crazy now.
For example, before rooting phone, I could go into folder options and show hidden files, but now that's not available.
After rooting phone, my desktop was a blank, shocked me. Managed to find a solution, which is to copy and paste one directory into another in the windows system32 folder.
When I go into control panel, there are 3 options for viewing, by Category, Large Icon, Small Icon. When I change to Small Icon, it just shows as Large Icons still.
My google chrome now shows "Your preferences cannot be saved" upon running it.
My internet explorer favourites disappeared.
And most importantly, I can't play candy crush saga on all browsers and my wife is scolding me for it!
Appreciate any help. I've tried searching for solutions one by one, regarding the hidden files problem, it seems there might be a virus. But from turning off my anti virus to running AAHK and turning anti virus on, I didn't do anything else in between...
Thanks!
I managed to get everything back to normal by using a system restore.
I restored to a point before installing the HTCdriver found in AAHK.
Now another question is: Is it safe to connect my phone to the computer, since it's restored to a pre-rooted stage. Sounds like a stupid question though. I think it's safe and besides, after successfully rooting, I probably don't need to run AAHK anymore unless I want to restore to stock ROM right?
Would still like to find out what probably went wrong after running AAHK though.

It sounds like too many issues for them to be unrelated.
Most likely, disabling your antivirus for running the AAHK opened up a way for a virus to come in and cause all those problems.
Some of the symptoms fit to a virus behavior perfectly: the virus probably disabled viewing hidden files so you couldn't see the virus' files, you have problems accessing some folders and files (like your Desktop, Favorites, or Chrome data) because the virus probably took your permissions to access them so you wouldn't be able to remove the virus manually, etc, etc..
Regarding your question:

I don't see any problem with connecting your phone to the PC in its current state. The PC's state is important only to the process of running the AAHK, not to the state of the phone (rooted / unrooted).
And if you're planning to run AAHK again (which, as you said, will be needed only to return your phone to stock), I'd recommend, like the AAHK manual does, to run it from an Ubuntu Live CD. It's very easy, lets you not to worry about your PC's state for the AAHK, and would definitely not affect your PC after running the AAHK.
Ok so i'm pulling whats left of my hair out as I cannot seem to be able to remove this pest of a driver , windows 8.1 Pro is insisting my Nexus 5X is a TP-Link Android Phone and keeps over writing my google adb drivers so my fastboot / adb no longer works , has / is anybody having this problem? wugfresh install wont overwrite the TP-Link either all universal adb installers wont work either

Kind of surprised you're still running Windows 8.1. Windows 10 is free for you and better in just about every way, regardless of the UI changes. Just a recommendation, though I doubt it'd fix your issue.
There's an easy way to tackle this but it depends on how the driver is being installed. If you're connecting your phone to your computer and Windows is insisting on downloading and installing this "TP-Link" driver from Windows Update, there is a way to disable this in a few easy steps. If you're connecting your phone to your computer and Windows just assumes that it's a "TP-Link Android Phone" and applies the wrong pre-loaded driver (usually gives you a notification near the clock) then we're gonna have to get a bit crafty.
EDIT: Silly question. You don't have USB tethering or any wacky app that would be causing this issue, right?

No tether app or other apps no, thats why im lost as to why its started this BS , windows i know can be tricky WIN10 was not for me plus the free upgrade has past now (29July) anyway.

Would you mind doing something for me before performing the steps I'm going to list below? Go into Device Manager with the phone plugged in and installed as the stupid "TP-Link" BS and find it in the list of devices. Should probably be under Portable Devices or something. Right click it and click Properties, go to the Driver tab and click "Driver Details". All of the drivers should be located in the 'system32/DRIVERS' folder. Mind giving me the names of those drivers listed? Naming convention is typically driverName.sys.
Additionally, we're going to try a Group Policy change. Hit Windows Key + R and type 'gpedit.msc' and hit enter. A window labeled "Local Group Policy Editor" should come up. Then do the following:
Expand Computer Configuration (Left hand side, the navigation panel)
Expand Administrative Templates
Expand System
Expand Device Installation
Click Device Installation Restrictions
On the right hand side, now, there should be a list of restrictions. Somewhere in that list there should be an item "Prevent installation of devices not described by other policy settings". Double-click that and another window named the same thing should pop up. In the top left, set it to enabled and click Apply, then OK.
Unplug your phone and get rid of that ****ty driver if you haven't already and then restart and try connecting the phone again to see if the same incorrect driver install occurs.
@MKD73 You ever get this sorted out?
Sorry been away on holiday for the weekend , I'll be taking a look in the morning :victory:
Please give update
Have you resolved this issue? My laptop is acting the same. Device manager sees my phone as "TP-Link Android Phone" with sub category of "Android Bootloader Interface." I can't use ADB with it, not recognized.
I tried doing what Alcolawl said but nothing happens. When I right click the "TP Link--- it just says general properties, no 'drivers' etc. I saw the 'driver' option in the "Andoid bootloader Interface" . It says the driver is: winusb.sys, wdfCoInstaller01009.dll and WinUSBInstaller2.dll. When I tried to edit the group, it says "Windows can not find gpedit.msc
Hope you can help me. My phone is stuck in fastboost mode- LG D838

Did you guys manage to fix it? I tried everything you people said but it didn't work. I have a Blu Vivo Xi+ and my PC only recognizes it as TP-LINK Android Phone. I dumbly deleted it's OS and all it's data when trying to update it. I only have access to TWRP and fastboot, is there a way to fix it? I would love if someone could assist me ?.
