1- We need to install vnc in our devices, go to the Market and search for androidvnc or whatever vnc app you like and install it
2- download the new version and extract it in the sd of your MT4G in a folder named ''ubuntu''
3- open a terminal emulator and type:
su
cd /sdcard/ubuntu
sh ubuntu.sh
bootubuntu
If you get the "root_localhost:/#" sign, congratulations
4- open vnc for android and connect with [email protected]:localhost:5901
5- if you want to change the pass type:
bootubuntu
vncpasswd
Alternative:
if that method doesn't work try this one:
1- Assuming you know how to work with adb just reboot your MT4G to recovery and load up ADB Shell connecting you phone to a computer.
2- once we are in adb shell, type:
mount system
mount sdcard
cd /sdcard/ubuntu
rm /system/bin/fsrw
rm /system/bin/bootubuntu
rm /system/bin/unionfs
rm /system/bin/mountonly
cp -f fsrw /system/bin
cp -f bootubuntu /system/bin
cp -f unionfs /system/bin
cp -f mountonly /system/bin
cd /sdcard/ubuntu
chmod 4777 *
cd /system/bin/
chmod 4777 *
cd /
umount sdcard
umount system
exit
Now select "reboot system now" from recovery menu
3- you need load up again ADB Shell Type "su" to enter superuser mode. Is very important not to forget this type:
mount -o rw,remount -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
mkdir /data/local/mnt
4- Once that completes, type "bootubuntu", If you get the "root_localhost:/#" sign, congratulations! You've just installed Ubuntu on your Android phone.

yes you can just download this script http://zedomax.com/android/bootubuntu and overwrite it in the ubuntu folder then go to a terminal emulator and type:
su

yes, but after that, you still need to change the sources.list in a file manager.
but yes, all this can be done through terminal
I didn't use this method but i can confirm that Ubuntu works on our device. Its great especially since my NetBook broke and I couldn't find an irc client that allowed for dcc send

yes, this ubuntu is in a form called "chroot"
it's basically like a virtual machine, ubuntu runs on top of android.
it won't touch android in any way, but just make a back up to be safe

it's saying miss some folders and files that means you miss some step so do all step once again and try reboot, remember to mount system to create the folders
kernels
remember you need a kernel with supporting 'noatime' mounts (which makes for faster reading/writing to the .img file)

First of all, if you even read his request, he wants to know how to do it via terminal since he doesn't want to install adb drivers on his computer and I'm pretty sure .gif boots won't work on a cupcake/donut/eclair/ ROM unless they are a HTC SENSE ROM. Please read before posting some BS.

on google donut builds, you're stuck with the android-logo-mask and android-logo-shine boot animations. on hero builds, you can use the animated gifs. on eclair builds, you can do the bootanimation zips. if you want to know how to do a standard google build boot animation without using adb, check the link in my signature. i made a full written + video tutorial on how to do it.
the other easy way to do it, is of course, metamorph. making the .thm files takes about 30 seconds and you can flash it without having to use adb, terminal OR recovery.
So how did Cyanogen make a custom boot animation for CyanogenMod?

yeah it is possible i do it all the time download terminal emulator form the market and enter the following commands
su
# cp /sdcard/bootanimation.zip /data/local/
# reboot

OK, so i installed the swype from stock espresso 2.1 ROM but it doesnt let me swype. tells me that its configured for a different device which is a fail honestly but how do i go along to delete it? Terminal or ADB commands would be nice because. Thanks fellas. i tried

rm -r /system/app/com.swype.inputmethod
any other suggestions?
Did you try reflashing cm6? Idk if it will work, but worth a try.

That seems like the only thing I can think of too. I'm having a similar problem where I tried to flash Swype, but it just keeps force closing, and now I actually HAVE the beta but I can't uninstall my old swype D: . I tried going thru with ADB and Root Explorer... It seems I deleted anything involved with Swype, BUT it's still in there somehow.

You have to do it via adb in while your phone is in recovery because our phones are s-on.
reboot into clockwork recovery, go into the partitions menu, mount /system, then in command prompt type
Code:
adb shell
rm /system/app/apkname.apk
If you're not sure what the exact name is do this:

adb shell
cd /system/app
ls
then it'll give you a list of all files in /system/app, type rm apkname.apk to remove it. Then reboot

Ive tried that before (suggested by others) wouldnt work for me. I would always get a read only error. The cd /system/app ls command would run fine though :/

Were you in recovery? Another thing to try while in recovery and in adb shell, type this:

mount -o rw,remount /system
You might also try adb remount, not in shell, then go back into shell.
Does anyone know where I can find QuickOffice for my g2? Im running cm6.1.1 and I downloaded a pdf and when I pressed it it went to quicloffice but when I exit I can't find it on the app.drawer or anywhere ..

You can get it from the stock deodex rom and push it to /system/app, I'm about to do that once I get home from work, so I can confirm.. I got the ezpdf from market but I think quick office seems better
Edit: I can confirm that it works by just extracting the Quickoffice.apk in stock deodex rom and push it back to cm, its usable and will also appear in the app drawer now

Download Stock Deodex Rom v1.1 in the Development forums.. look through it, it might be towards the end or so..
You can use 7zip to extract files or windows extract .. so if you haven't gotten it, download it at download.com and install it.
Open the v1.1.zip rom, just double click on it, go to SYSTEM folder then APPS folder and search for Quickoffice.apk at the bottom and just drag it out to the desktop.
Now, either copy it through Terminal Emulator by just putting it to the root of sdcard and type
su
cp /sdcard/Quickoffice.apk /system/app
Or you can use adb, and I bet root explorer aswell as its pretty much all the same concept..

Before you do the "cp /sdc...." command, you have to mount system using this command: mount -o remount,rw -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblk3 /system

If you have a nandroid backup of your stock rom you could also restore it and extract from there. Otherwise just flash the stock rom like noodles said and extract from there

It is not a fix due to the fact that you still will not be able to fix permissions in CWM or Rom Manager but does get the job done of Fixing Permissions!!
1st Do you have the Google android installed?
If not download and install it! http://developer.android.com/sdk/android-4.0.htm
you might need to install the JDK, if you don't have it already.
2nd Your path to adb must not be set or is not correct.

Of it says not found mount /system
If it says something about read only variable you forgot the preceding sh (may need to do "cd /sbin" then "sh fix_permissions" if you still have an issue.
This is only way I can get fix permissions to run (even tried sh fix_permissions -l -r in Android terminal emulator and script manager to no avail)
After fix permissions ran correctly it really helped iron some small performance issues and notably helped.

Yep! Was going to say this. Fix permissions doesn't work on most roms in this section.
Jug and Macnut (based off of jug) are the only two I have had it work on.

Also having the same problem with Fix Permissions instantly finishing, but with the "/sbin/fix_permissions: line 64: UID readonly variable" error in the logs. Trying in ROM Manager also results in in random results each time I try, but never making it all the way through before it just hangs. The furthest I've gotten is 94 of 132.
Also on ICS Blackedition, but still on RC2.
I just tried another ICS rom and I still cant fix permishions. So I tried CM7 and it works fine.
Looks like this is a problem with ICS.

I don't know but for some reason it's in the general forum and never made it to the development section. Remember to use the autorotation fix since the OP didn't update the ROM yet. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1576617
I ran into some weird superuser error...sometimes i lose root access when im trying to delete or change a system file. maybe i gotta wipe data and caches some more and reflash.
The fix permissions work fine for this ROM work fine in CWM and also in ROM manager

I'll check it out later.
But if this is ture I hope a developer takes a look at it and figurers out why fix permishions only works on that ROM and not the other ICS ROMs

Yeah that and the ORIGINAL leak by racer is the only ics roms that work. I tried all ics t989 roms haha. IM currently running some skyrocket roms and fix permissions isn't working properly in cwm. It's frustrating sometimes because I need it to work haha

Alright after testing fix permissions I found a way to make it run!
Issue: fix permissions won't run from recovery (correctly (it says done in less than 60 secs and stops instantly for me saying completed and while in Android; ROM manager script runs but freezes at random points (same if you open terminal emulator and run it).
Resolution:
You have to have adb on a computer for this
Boot in to Recovery
plug USB in to phone and computer
Go in to mounts and storage and mount /system and /data
On computer open a command line window (windows) or terminal (Linux or OSX)
Run "ADB devices" and be sure it is not all ? For device number (if it is restart recovery and reseat USB connection and run "adb kill-server" on computer) I had to run terminal as root (admin for best results bit got it to work either way really)
Now run "adb shell" after mounting /system and /data
Once that opens and you get ~# run "sh fix_permissions -l -r" just like that (with two separate - don't do -lr or it won't run)
Of it says not found mount /system
If it says something about read only variable you forgot the preceding sh (may need to do "cd /sbin" then "sh fix_permissions" if you still have an issue.
This is only way I can get fix permissions to run (even tried sh fix_permissions -l -r in Android terminal emulator and script manager to no avail)
After fix permissions ran correctly it really helped iron some small performance issues and notably helped.

I had to do the "cd /sbin" thing before running "sh fix_permissions -l -r" inside the adb shell, but it actually ran without a hitch!
Not quite a solution, but it gets the job done!
You still will not be able to fix perms in CWM or ROM Manager
I had to do the same "cd /sbin" then "sh fix_permissions -l -r" to get it to work

Thanks for this. resolved some issues I had with a specific application force closing on me.
I am under the impression this has to do with the fact that a lot of I727 users, if not all, are having issues mounting /system inside of ICS. Mounting in recovery is fine but it seems that mounting /system inside of ICS works ONCE after flashing a kernel and then never again.
Wow, I'm really stuck. I tried without "SU" but that didn't help. Here is my cmd screen:

Give this a try and report back
First download http://www.getyourdroidon.com/shiversftp/fix_permissions.sh
Put it on the root of your sd card and go into terminal emulator.
Type: su and hit enter
Type: sh /sdcard/fix_permissions.sh and hit enter
Type reboot and hit enter
Should be all fixed.
"rm -rf" command cannot run on the device
I've got an new device LG Optimus LTE II (LGE F160L) and install "Better Terminal Emulator Pro"
The Android version is 4.0.3
The kernel is 3.0.8-00001-g65e7cd3
1. I properly rooted the device
2. I used "su" command before runnig follow the commands.
3. When I try to run "rm -rf /sdcard/.ads" command, it showed "No such file or directory"
I've found the command "-rf" has been trade as a diretory but parameters.
How does it happened?
How can I resolve this?
I think it's because the folder /sdcard/.ads doesn't actually exist because /sdcard is a symbolic link to /mnt/sdcard. So to answer your question, I think the following might work:

If that doesn't work, I dunno...

the "rm" command thought "-rf" is a file or a directory., and the "-rf" should be parameters.
Ah, I see, this might be a limitation of busybox, then.

I need to run a lot of testing scripts in "Gscripts". I see, why those scripts don't work on this device.
Then, how can I update the busybox? Those testing is my work!! Otherwise, I need to change back to HTC Desire which scripts are working well.:crying::crying: OH, Nooooo........:crying::crying::crying:

Yes, of course. But the andorid version is 2.3.7.
I use "rm -r /mnt/sdcard/.ads" without parameter "f" as a mistake, and the script runs without a respond of error. ^_^
I used R.E browse to /mnt/sdcard , I found directory "/mnt/sdcard/.ads" has been removed !!!!!!!
I try to remove other directory with the "rm -r" command which seems non-forced remove command, but in fact, the command remove the folder, and everything in the folder, too.
OMG...Is there something has been modified in the kernel??
