Insurance Claim questions - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I heard you can possibly get the Evo 3D as a replacement and I was considering doing this if that was the case. My phone isn't broken per say or lost/stolen so I had some questions regarding making a claim.
My phone does have some slight physical damage but it's not too bad but I've had it for a little over a year and a $100 to get the Evo 3D for the next year until my contract is up and ready for an upgrade would be pretty nice I think. With that said here are my questions.
1. If I make the claim and say my screen is completely broken/shattered, will they make me send the phone back to them? Or would I be able to use this as a backup phone?
2. If I report it lost/stolen again would I be able to use it again as a backup or do they block this phone from ever being used on Sprint?
Just trying to figure out if it's worth spending the $100 when I don't necessarily need a new phone....It would just be nice to have a brand new Evo 3D for the next year though. With the possibility of having my old Evo sitting around in case I ever need it if that's possible.
Thoughts?

If you report it lost or stolen that would be considered insurance fraud

Hmm I certainly don't want that then. What if I claim the screen no longer turns on or just doesn't boot because I dropped it? Still insurance fraud? And if not could I possibly use it as a backup phone?

Technically, lying to the insurance company or filing a false claim is insurance fraud, regardless of the reasoning.
You have to send the phone into them unless it is lost or stolen. If you report it lost or stolen then the ESN is blacklisted and you won't be able to activate it again. There's really no way to do what you're trying to do without committing insurance fraud. You may be able to sell your Evo and buy a used Evo 3D for not much more, I don't really know the asking price for either phone used.

If I recall someone is selling a 3vo for 250 in the marketplace rooted and s-off if you want to check that out

Insurance fraud doesn't help anybody. Sell ur Evo and buy a 3d if that's what u want. Check out the going prices for each and determine if you can afford the difference. If not stick with what you have. Man up

Insurance gave me a new evo, however, I found the lost evo, can I sell it?

Please read title. Thank you kindly.
Cant they track it?
You could sell it, but that's kinda morally objectionable.
Plus it will be flagged as having a bad ESN, so it won't be able to be activated on Sprint.

Yea But cant you still use it??
the point is you can do what you want but sprint is not going to let it be put on a line. The ESN has been blacklisted so if you want to use it as a music player or whatever you want that does not use phone service or data then yes but as a phone No.
I will buy it for forty dollars!

Once you lose a phone, Sprint places it on a lost/stolen list. If you sell it, the purchaser will not be able to activate it.
Sell on ebay and state has bad esn
I think if you only went through asurion the phone might still work. I had a phone that was lost and I did it through the website and i gave the phone to someone else when i found it and they told me that it activated. So maybe have a friend try and see if it works.

Ill Buy it for $50 dollars, no questions ask!! I want to start into development roms, and ill be good for me!!!
Why even ask a question like that? Once you accepted the condition to file the claim then the phone belongs to the insurance company. The only sense to this question is that you want to know if you will be in any kind trouble.

i thought the same thing too when i lost my phone in the movie theatre after it fell out of my pocket. I filed a claim and got the replacment then i was able to find my lost phone shortly after. i checked the ESN and it was still clean. i was surprised but now i have two evos. You can always call them and check if its still a valid esn.
Because I don't want to cause anyone any undo trouble. I would like to get my deductible back so I will say bad esn on eBay for $100 as another forum member sugested. Thank you for all input into this discussion.

You certainly can activate it still.
I lost my TP2 and got a new one thru insurance and then Sprint called me and told me someone turned in my lost tp2.
I reactivated my original the second I got home. I sold the new TP2. I called Sprint and they told me I was supposed to send the lost one to the insurance but it was up to me. They didn't really care.
Moral wrong..yes... doable .. yes.
if you call ausrion and get a replacement phone they send you another one out but by law or sprint policy (not sure which its to early for me to google it a few sprint employees have told me though) they cant contact sprint and flag it as bad ESN your suppose to do that yourself. So you can activate the old one if you like with 0 issues. Been their and have done it. (on accident found the missing phone like a week or 2 later) sold it to a friend and he is still using it.
There are methods to make a phone work on another carrier if it has a bad ESN on Sprint. Cricket and Metro PCS are the carriers that are most commonly used in the US. I actually bought an Evo on Craigslist a while back for a good price. It wasn't listed as lost/stolen, but it was still tied to a suspended Sprint account. I later sold it on eBay for $360 and listed it with a bad ESN and a bad headphone jack. I think the guy I sold it to was planning on using it in Mexico.
Even without activation, an Evo makes a pretty nice MID on Wifi. Just be warned that most Android devices won't connect to an ad-hoc Wifi network, so it's hard to tether it to another phone.
You could sell it for more than $100. Can't you hack it to work with VZW PRL? Maybe that'll sell for more.
Technically you could sell it to someone on metro pcs or cricket.. they dont care about esn's being blacklisted they'll activate it anyway.

Oh God the moral police is here. Its a very valid question. I would do the same damn thing this Guy is doing. Just think of it as a way to recover that 10 dollars extra a month we are ALL getting hosed for every month.
Sent on my cursed EVO
The "moral" thing to do is call the insurance company, explain that you found your old phone and you would like to return the phone and get your deductible returned as well.
I would think they would go for it as they make out in the end.
And you can sleep at night knowing they won't catch on to you some day and deactivate your phone. (highly doubt that could ever happen, but I tend to have a really guilty conscience. what's a $100 anyway.....)

Question bout ESN

ok guys i have a survivor EVO who survived for 12 minutes drowned in water, but my wifi, bluetooth and front cammera are not working, now i claimed as lost in the insurance and they are sending me a replacement for my phone, now my question is can i use the old drowned evo in METROPCS or that esn will be invalid?
It can be ported to evo just never used on sprint again. it can also go to cricket

Yes, you can just flash it to metroPCS, there are tons of instructions out there. HOWEVER, I noticed you're in NYC. Just keep in mind the Metro PCS network in NYC and New england is quite new and uses the 1700mHz AWS band, which the evo does not support.

No service in any way, shape or form.
In my experience insurance doesn't report the esn to sprint if you only talk to the insurance folks directly. The only way to get it deactivated or marked as lost or stolen is to actually tell sprint. Whether it's asking them for the phone number of asurion and telling them the phone was lost or telling them in the store.

Also please do not forget that Insurance Fraud is bad. It causes higher deductibles for those that make claims, even those that are not making fraudulent claims.
If you have the device, water damaged or not, you are supposed to send it to Asurion. Asurion is not my friend, however I am a customer of theirs. I think that you should send the phone to them.
I do wonder why it was 12 minutes in the water and not 11 or 13. 11 minutes in the water sounds much more believable for an insurance claim than 12.
I do not like people to commit insurance fraud, however my employment is based on the basis of deterring insurance.

While I think he came off as kind of douche-y when he questioned the minutes the phone was dunked in water, I think he's quite right about everything else. It IS insurance fraud, and it WILL raise our deductible. Just a year ago it would cost $50 to replace a phone with asurion, now it costs double that.

I meant to hit the quote button but I hit the thanks button by mistake. Anyway, your example is pretty stupid. The point is he reported his phone lost or stolen when in fact it wasn't. I am sure that he new that if he reported it as damaged then he would have to return the damaged phone thats why he reported it as lost or stolen. If you report your car stolen but in reality you have it hidden somewhere in a friends garage then file an insurance claim isn't that fraud? If you drive your car into a brick wall and the insurance company totals your car out do you get to keep the totalled car to repair then sell it to someone else? Of course not, it becomes the property of the insurance company.

I never said anything about being perfect, I also am not judging anyone or what they do. I could care less what anyone decides to do, that's their business but still, it is what it is and that's a fact. Also, what do you mean by as much as we pay for these phones? Do you remember what cell phones cost 5, 10 or 15 years ago and you gonna mention about the price of phones now? The price of these phones now are way more than reasonable for what we get even though its gonna be outdated in six months, thats just the nature of the industry. If you buy a new car today, in 6 months it aint gonna be worth **** either compared to what you paid for it so whats your point? If something happens to your car are you gonna commit fraud to get as much as you can out of the insurance company because you paid an arm and a leg for your car? Hell, what if your boss tells you one day that "as much as we pay you, you can blow me", is that ok? Like I said it is what it is and you cant dispute that. What ever you decide to do is your business and what ever the OP decides to do is his business, I was just pointing out the obvious facts without casting judgement.

So.... your belief is that since you believe HTC is charging way too much for the phones, that makes it OK to steal from Asurion?
Do you not grasp the fact the Asurion has to pay for the phones they send out to people who commit fraud?

Asurion does not pay for our phones every body here that pays 7$
A month for 24 months. Is 168$ plus 100 dollar deductible they are effectively getting us to pay 268 dollars for us to get a refurbished replacement phone.... now granted my math is based on us having a 2 yr contract and that you only make a claim once a yr... sounds like they're winning to me.....
Just my theory on this as much as **** cost in this world of ours every now and then you've got to stick it to the man
Edit. Have you ever actually seen the invoice price of the Evo ..... buying a phone is worse than buying a car

so lemme ask u something here, so if i report my phone damaged, i gotta returned and pay 100 dollars, but i reported lost, i still paid 100 dollars but guess what?? i have a spare battery and some parts in case i need it, so i guess is a pretty good deal... come on, if it was free to send the phone back and get a new one, i wouldve done it...
Insurance fraud is illegal on any level. $5 or $5 million dollars. By keeping the phone you are contributing to possible future increases of insurance rates or deductibles.
What I think is funny is that you openly admit to breaking the law on a public forum. Then, you continue to justify yourself. The law is the law.
Assurion is a business and their drive is to profit. If you do not want to support them then you have other options such as Best Buy Insurance or no insurance.
By returning the phone you are giving Assurion a possible chance to refurbish that phone and the ability to keep insurance rates and deductibles down.

so what are u some insurance fraud cop?? if yes ill give u my address so u can come... stop bullshitting me, how can they prove i didnt lose my phone? so who cares, now, lemme tell u something, yes they here to make profit, but isnt it the money we pay every month their profit? come on.. send it back so they can reburbish it and then get money out of the phone i paid for? they getting more money out of me that the money i paid for the phone on sprint (WITH A 2 YEARS CONTRACT).. so NOPE they`re NOT getting my phone back, PERIOD! so u telling me that if if u buy a car and is messed up u gonna give away the money that u paid for it, and give it as a gift to the insurance company so they can fix it and sell it again (of course u getting nothing out of the sale) and still pay for the new car? (which problably wont be new either) i dont think so,. so please... think what would u do b4 trying to b perfect here

Of course they report it to Sprint, if they didn't they would be taking losses left and right.

[Q] Gave up RSA Keys, I've already got a replacement Evo, Will they give me another?

Pretty much borked myself out of 4G, I just unrooted my phone back to stock, ready to take it to Sprint tomorrow. Just a few questions before I do so.
Q1: When i first got my evo they gave me one with a broken volume down button, i went back and they replaced it, telling me i can't get a refund now. =_= Does this mean i cant return my current Evo? (2nd one)
Q2: How do i come at them about replacing my phone? Do i say i updated to the most recent OTA and now my 4G doesnt work? or Do i report it stolen or lost? I dont know what to do. I just dont want to end up paying for a brand new one or refurbished one.
Q3: Should i just switch over to Boost mobile and cancel my account with sprint since i dont have 4G anymore? This would be more positive thinking if i cant get a free Evo replacement again.
Q4: Just reassuring myself, Theres no way to create a wimax image using the RSA key info from my RSA_oem.key file? I read some where that you can use the hex editor to change info on a wimax template to work with your phone.
It was dumb of me, i remember it like it was yesterday. I had no 4G connection, but i had my Keys. (not backed up of course) So i figured it was my Wimax/Radio, next i formatted Wimax and lost my keys. (Eternally screwed) Dont EVER do this if you're reading this. First thing I'm gunna do when i get my new Evo is back up my RSA keys.
Do you have insursance on it? If not then your SOL. I had same issue with my 4g and I told them I had been updating my profile and prl (after flashing stock rom) and it dropped and shut off, then after reboot I couldn't get 4g. They took it for testing and I came back and got a new phone. I had insurance
Yes i have insurance thank god. Did they make you pay a deductible? sorry for the late post i had forgotten of this post. I talked to a customer at my local sprint store and he told me i should just pay the 100$ deductible and write it off as damage cuz they'll give me an Evo 3D they're not handing out evos anymore, but i still want to try :3

Sprint store reps won't know if you would be getting a 3D for insurance replacement, you would have to contact Asurion about that. Some people have been getting the 3D, but some have still been getting the OG Evo. All depends on what they have in stock when you make your claim.

quick idea, instead of paying $100 for a replacement thru your insurance for a refurbished phone, you could go onto craigslist and buy a new evo slightly used for the same price thats probably in better condition. Just throwing the idea out there.

You only have to pay a deductible if theatre physical damage. If your wimax is damage just flash a stock rom and when you bring it in say you were updating the prl or profile and it dropped and when you turned it on 4g wasn't working. They will take it for testing then give you a new one.
Positively works

Samsung Warranty Replacement

I've heard some folks talk about Samsung warranty service. What are the stipulations of doing it through them vs a Sprint corporate store? Also, do you get a new phone through Samsung, or do they send you a refurb?
I am in a process of doing the same thing but I called sprint and they said it's still under warranty from Samsung so they will check it out. This guy did it check

Company policy is to work on rooted devices unless it is a software issue and you are on a custom rom then you need to go back to a stock rom. TEP and asurion are NOT real insurance and insurance laws don't apply to them, it would be just plain fraud, which would be hard to prove since fraud means you did something with the intention to get something more for free by intentionally doing something to get it, ie smashing your phone or microwaving it to get an upgraded device and not a replacement for a malfunctioning/broken device. I work in property insurance and even certain things that are blatantly done to be able to up the value of the claim in the policy holders favor isn't considered fraud. Either way Asurion and TEP are not insurance, insurance law doesn't apply to them which is why they are called device/equipment protection and not device/equipment insurance. In my state (FL) they aren't allowed to use the word insurance in their advertisement or paperwork because the law says they aren't an insurance company are not governed in the same way as insurance companies and never will be because they are a monopoly and there is no competition in prices you have the choice of asurion or nothing and it is contracted through the carrier and not chosen by the customer with a choice to shop for a competitive premium/deductible

Idaho is Similar in calling it the protection plan. But when all is said and done pay for the protection plan is mainly a guarantee that one way or another that we will have a solution for you. Yeah you can go through Samsung but you can run the risk of getting your "Broken" phone back after waiting for 6-8 weeks, with no solution. Usually paying the 35 and doing an store replacement will be easier on the pocket book as well as alot faster 2-5 days at the most. This will also allow you to add the TEP if you want.

The worst part of asurion is they have no QC on what type of refurbs they send out, most of the time you get some kind of crap phone with more problems and aesthetic damage than the one you're having replaced. This is one reason why I don't have asurion or TEP. The other being that all my electronics are covered under my homeowners policy and any portable electronics (cell phones, laptops, PSP, gameboy, mp3 players etc) are covered in and out of the house from loss, theft or damage. I pay nothing extra on my premium and my deductible is $50 per device. If anything happens to my device (no matter what or what kind of device) instead of paying asurion or sprint my money up front, I file a claim with my insurance company, and 3 days later I get a check for the full MSRP of the device less $50. So if my phone is $600 off contract I would get a check for $550 which I can do whatever I want with. I could add my $50 to it and buy a brand new phone or I could cash the check buy a used device and pocket the difference. What makes it even nicer is my insurance payment are direct deposited to my bank account so i don't have to wait for a check to clear, and I get my funds in 12-72 hours depending on the time/day I filed my claim.

Company policy is to work on rooted devices unless it is a software issue and you are on a custom rom then you need to go back to a stock rom.

Service is refused if the device is not running the correct software, short of a failed charging port.

Not for both of mine that have been replaced. My tech guy was running CM9 on his personal Nexus S 4g, and I told him mine were rooted and were running a ROM when the problem occurred. The first bricked one I was able to get access to the internal sd card and format it and put stock recovery back on it and the second one had the blue led of death so it didn't matter what it was running.

I mean I don't care personally and I still work on them myself, but the word from above says otherwise. Seems to vary day by day though.

insurance and refurb questions

I dropped my phone and destroyed the screen, still worked but the screen was shattered and cracked real bad. First phone I ever broke from my own negligence.
I called and requested a new phone and was sent a refurb. After making it clear I was not accepting a refurb and wanted a new one it was sent to me.
I am glad I did since I am now seeing threads on problems with the refurbs. I have had nothing but trouble with them so far; between a droid 2 global and an env touch I received close to two dozen bad phones that were refurbished.
Is there another insurance company that is more willing to take care of their customers? An insurance company that cares about its customers; I know. But I am looking for other options or companies.
I always keep the insurance/extended warranty on all of my phones but all that is ever sent is a phone what was broken and sent back already. I think its a rip off to have a deductible and monthly payment unless there is a new phone to replace the phone I purchased new.
Any input or thoughts? Suggestions on other insurance plans?
Honestly, there is nothing wrong with refurbs. I had a hardware revision .10 Gnex originally, and I messed it up and wouldn't boot. I got Verizon to send me a new one at no cost to me and it's hardware revision .09 but it is identical to my original phone. No need to stigmatize refurbished phones... Half of the refurbs have never even been touched by another owner.
If you get into a car accident you pay the deductible and get your car repaired. Not a brand new car. So, you dropped your USED phone and you think you should get a brand new one from the insurance company? pfft.... If that were the case every asshole would be dropping their phones at the 8 month mark to scam a brand new one. I'm rooting for the insurance company on this one.
good day.
Insurance =brand new phone and u pay the deductible.
Warranty =refurbished phone for free
So did u go through insurance or the warranty as Verizon will not honor user error, ie breaking the screen

Square trade us a great alternative as long as you don't lose the phone.

I paid the 100.00 deductible. I know verizon does not cover user error but that's why there is the insurance and why I was not going to accept a refurbished phone.

Maybe they looked at my account and realized I am not that asshole and that I am in fact the guy that has had insurance on my phones since my Blackberry 8703e and have yet to file a claim.

Insurance such as Asurion is typically a refurb replacement and is not obligated to send a new phone as a replacement. For that matter, it doesn't even necessarily have to be the same model or manufacturer that they replace it with.

The first time, ask for a new phone, not a refurb.
You're complaining they don't take good care of you when they sent you two phones when they were only obligated to send you one?
Why didn't u just do a screen replacement. =p
I'd do whatever it takes to keep the original.

Second paragraph first sentence. Haters gonna hate.
Was curious about different options on insurance (not me) and peoples experiences with refub gnexes. I do not know who does the refurb but I personally went through plenty of them with laundry lists of issues.
Maybe samsung does a good job with QC while motorola does not. Broken camera on a the first refurb Droid 2 Global is a perfect example.
