Has anyone update froyo 2.2 to Gingerbread on Droid Inc?
Do you mean besides the official OTA from Verizon/HTC?
Besides the several versions of the 2.3.4 update Verizon has pushed to various users in the last 2 months or so, there are a number of ROMs based on that update and I'm sure a bunch more based on 2.3 for other phones. Check out the development forum.
i'm not sure which one to get.

I always go by roms is way better. And if you go by Verizon ota you have to wait till they push it to the phone and you will lose all your root privileges. I have two favorites personal recommendations
Well my friend my personal favorite is nilsp Business gingersense 3.5. Is updated to the latest ota (gingerbread) and to the latest Sense UI 3.5
And I added the V6 supercharger Script. If you interested in this rom I help you set up for maximum performance
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1267158
Now if you interested in staying stock I recommend jeremaine151 stock plus rom
Like the name say it is stock plus some additional cool features mods and tweaks. And of course, is based in the latest ota the gingerbread

I hope I could help you out a bit. Let me know if you need any help or questions
i like to try nilsp business gingersense 3.5.
will u show me how to get that?

Ok, first I need you to turn off your phone and when is completely off press and hold volume down and power button till you get to a white screen whit some color letters and stuff.
There I need you to look in the top of the screen for something called HBOOT and tell me the version. It should say some numbers

Excellent now I need you to put all your SD card content in your computer and format the SD card to FAT32
after that put everything back on your sd card and put this in the root of your sd card
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/36172195/PB31IMG.zip
IT MUST BE IN ROOT OF YOUR SD CARD!!
reboot in hboot and it will ask you if you want to update, hit volume up to accept after the flash it will ask if you want to restart, again hit volume up to restart.
how to move contents from SD card to computer?

Hi All,
Just a quick question - appologies if this is in the wrong section
I've made a goldcard for my desire - how many times can I use it? Does it have some kind of counter that 'kills' it after a certian number of uses? I kind of recall reading somewhere that it was 2 but can't find it on xda, modaco and giyf
Much thanks
Mr K
Erm
No?!
It's just a modified boot sector with some "magic numbers" that tells your phone to play nice.
Use it as many times as you want.
Dude - thanks for that! Not sure where I got that from but wanted to be sure Guess I'll keep this 4gb GoldCard to one side
Thanks for the reply

Good plan.
The mistake I made last night was to put it back down on my desk amongst 6 other 2GB cards once I finished rooting with it.
Now I have no idea which one the goldcard image belongs to and will have to do it again.
btw guys, does it matter on what card class it is made? because the original one is class 2 4gb sandisk and i recently bought a 8gb class 4 kingston and would prefer to use the kingston one and make the goldcard on the sandisk one

Doesn't make any difference, BUT you will have to do the WHOLE procedure again for the new card.
Obtain new ID, make a new image online and then hex edit it.
Because the image (goldcard.img) is unique to the card it was created for.
nooooo! Instead cant you load each one into your pc and a hex editor and have a look at the first 170b?? Playing the odds you should hit it soon

If you've already used the Goldcard once to root the phone, I don't think you'll need it again. A couple of days ago I went into Recovery mode and successfully installed a Radio update from my usual non-Goldcarded SD card.
The only time I used my Goldcard was when I went from an unrooted T-Mobile branded ROM to a rooted HTC generic.
not needing it again eh?? That's excellent to know - that and I'm hoping for HSPL soon, man I'd donate to the person who makes that bad boy

Well, I wouldn't say you'll never need it again. Who knows, you might have to unroot your device for repair or something and will have to use it again afterwards.
I'll be keeping hold of mine for now.
Guys, is it true that you don't need a Goldcard to root an unbranded Desire? (I think I read it somewhere but can't find it right now).
I believe so, yes, it should be true.
-------------------------------------
Alias::NeO on HTC Desire
Phone says mine is borked, but I think it works?
is this normal?
Can you be more specific?
-------------------------------------
Alias::NeO on HTC Desire
Well I rooted my unbranded desire last night (now I know the USB issue is resolved!) I had originally used a goldcard to flash an unbranded RRU rom to the phone using the windows software.
I tried to use another 4gb sd card to run the rooting procedure and it failed at step 2 with the red triangle in that adb wouldn't connect so I did the most important thing when doing stuff like this and stopped where I was and gave it some thought - it was then I realised I wasn't using the previous goldcarded sd card, so battery out and other card in, start from step 1 of the rooting process and now I'm all good as they say... which leaves me believing you need a goldcard still to root, I might be wrong but that was the only thing I changed during my rooting path... anyways, all I wanted was apps2sd which I now have so no more flashy flashy for me... well until froyo comes along
Hope that helps
EDIT: Regarding ROOTING: there are now rooted 2.2 official ROMs available with all kinds of goodies. If you have a rooted phone, or wanted to root anyway, you have the option of using those ROMs. This thread is then not for you.
BY FOLLOWING THE BELOW STEPS YOU WILL LOSE ROOT. If you want to root in the future, use a custom rom from the development section.
You do NOT need to have a rooted phone to do the below modifications. Everything is done using only official HTC Roms. You will have the official 2.2 Update as a result of the below steps.
Now back to your regular programme
-------------------
Ok for those who have itchy hands and must have the europe Froyo update on their non-Europe handsets:
The trick: treat your phone as if it were branded, even if you thought it wasn't. This applies especially to those with chinese input. This means you will need to do two things: create a gold card and de-brand your phone to European WWE 1.21 firmware.
Estimated time: give it an evening. There are a lot of things to do, so it may take a while, even if you're awesome and you've rooted and done other things to your phone you shouldn't do
Creating a gold card has been covered in detail see:
http://theunlockr.com/2010/03/10/how-to-create-a-goldcard/
But a few TIPS to note:
1. backup whatever you have on your memory card, just in case before starting the gold card creation process. you may have to format it.
2. look for the gold card creation tool, it will save you a lot of time
3. you will need to store your upgrade image on your gold card. when you are done creating your gold card, double check that when you unplug it from your computer and plug it back in, you are still able to put files in it. ie you do NOT get the message from Windows suggesting you should format it. If you get this message, do the gold card process again.
Now that you have a Gold Card...
Step 1: Unlocking
Get the WWE image:
http://shipped-roms.com/shipped/Bra...00.28U_4.06.00.02_2_release_126984_signed.exe
This is a windows installer and is run from your computer. This WILL wipe all data from your phone and perform a factory reset.
I recommend using something like myBackup to backup your important information (bookmarks, smses etc). You can even back up Apps with myBackup, but since you are wiping data you might as well reinstall as you are not likely to get your Apps preferences back. Reinstalling also puts more of your apps into your SD memory, froyo style.
So, do a backup to your regular SD card, shut down. Pop in your Gold Card, boot up your phone, go into HTC sync mode (this enables USB debugging), and then run the above exe.
Follow instructions in the installer.
Step 2:
Now you have an unbranded phone. Keep your gold card in there, don't bother setting up your phone as you can do all this after we get froyo. And if something fails, you will be kicking yourself for having to do it again
Grab the update image from:
http://liveimage.htc.com/OTA_Bravo_Froyo_HTC_WWE_2.09.405.8-1.21.405.2_release4dua3bcrut4wrv30.zip
Hopefully it stays up there for some time, but if it gets taken down I'm sure you will be able to find someone who has a copy
When done downloading, rename this file "update.zip" and copy this file onto your Gold Card.
This is why it was important in step 1 to make sure your Gold Card can still accept writing files to it.
Step 3: The update
Shut down your phone. Boot recovery mode.

Hi Annafil - first - many many thanks for sharing this - I had purchased a Desire from the grey market in the UAE, and it was from Singapore, and I couldnt get rid of the Chinese keyboard options that kept coming up every time I typed. I couldnt also use the official wwe roms - and then ur post came along. Now thanks to you, I have the wwe rom, with Froyo chugging along perfectly fine on my Desire Thanks a ton.
Just a quick comment - refer the instructions quoted above - the video is not really reflecting the right tasks to be done at the 3rd step - I looked around and found these comments, and thought will put them down - you might want to use this in your comments as an alternative to the video
When you want to launch the recovery image
1. Turn on your device with 'volume down' pressed and select 'Recovery'
2. When the exclamation mark appears, press and hold 'volume up' then press 'power'
3. Select the second option, 'Apply sdcard:update.zip'
For more information, see video for instructions:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zi0PTV992WA
In recovery mode, use the option to load "Update.zip" from memory card.
This will kick start the update.
If you have done everything right, it will do some copying (an error about failing to load something related to cache is normal, ignore it). Your phone will reboot, show you an upgade in progress icon, reboot again into your regular phone mode and tell you you have successfully upgraded. It will then do a quick load from 0 to 100%, and then present you with keyboard settings.
You now have froyo. Shut down, swap out your gold card for your regular card with your myBackup backup, boot up.
Get online, grab myBackup from the market place. If you did this all within 30 days you've still got your free trial, so click restore inside myBackup and have fun

Yes thanks to your write up, I have now in my hand a froyo-ed HTC Desire Woo Hoo!
Hi to all SG desire users,
Able to install back chinese input after you upgrade to froyo using european rom?
Out of interest... are we able to do the initial rooting of the Asian rom via the 'Unrevoked' method??
Its a hell of a lot less complicated than making a gold card... but I havent heard much feedback on whether it will work with the faux-branded Asian roms.
My current stock rom:
Firmware version 2.1-update1
Baseband version 32.36.00.28U_4.06.00.02_2
Kernel version 2.6.29-c8d11160
[email protected]#1
Build number 1.20.751.5 CL171460 release-keys
Software number 1.20.751.5
HBOOT 0.80.000
Cheerz in advance.
Is root required for this?
Chinese input is available for me on world generic. Can't tell you if it's very good since don't use it but it's there.
No, you do not need to root.
Rooting is not the same as making a gold card and won't help you to install the ota successfully.
The rest: my pleasure happy to have saved someone the headache I had trying to do this.
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
I'd be curious if anyone has an easier way to accomplish the same thing without losing settings, for instance.
Does rooting require to do this processes?
I bought my handset from an importer, how do I work out where its from and what version its running?
Can I completely ruin the phone if this goes wrong?

1. No, you don't need the gold card once you are done.
2. If you use the European firmware on an Asian phone, you will likely need the gold card for future updates.
3. Yes, you can, but you have to have the gold card in your phone when you are running the update. So your gold card still has to be your SD card.
the update has a tendency to ask for more space, and then ask you to download again. i figured it would be easier to tell people to run the update.zip because that way less stuff can go wrong. But yeah, it's the same thing.
The update.zip does not wipe your phone. If you have settings on the European 2.1, or if you already used a gold card to go to WWE rom before, you won't lose settings.

I don't think it is because the asian version is 2.19 wheras the world wide english is 2.21.
I had a problem in that the update would not apply - but I had taken out my gold card between applying the 2.1 WWE rom and applying the Froyo update. BTW, if it keeps rebooting, and has a problem with "system" force closing - then you have this problem.
Anyway, in desperation, I thought I would go back to the asian rom - but the euro rom is more recent, and it refused to downgrade (Error 140). Oh well. I do have a successful Euro rom, I just haven't Froyoed it yet - something for tonight.
I have successfully completed 1&2 steps but I am getting error in step3, see the attached screen grab.
I am using a Gold Card to try and get over the signature verification issues.
Does anyone have a suggestion as to what else to try please?
just followed all the steps and my phone is rocking Froyo! yipee. pretty smooth process. took me <2 hrs.

after some research unrevoked3 seems to be the easiest way to root my HTC Desire.
but there are no instructions on how to use it... i know you just download the software and install the drivers etc... but i mean what state does it leave my phone in?
will it have all of its text messages saved, settings saved, etc...
will my sd card be wiped completely should i back it up? should i buy a cheap one to root it with etc...
i know 2.3 is coming out soon for HTC Desire but my phones branded with vodafone. should i just debrand it and wait for an offical update?
ive been wanting to root my phone for a while but ive got no idea which roms are best or anything.
how do i back up my sd card? how do i save my texts to the sd card for back up?
any help will be appreciated thanks.
Hi welcome to the site. There is a wealth of information in these forums and sometimes it is hard to single out exactly what you are looking for. Read this to start and then ask some specific questions. Seek much advice before rooting yourself.

I dont have it either yet, I downloaded the 605.2 and have that right now but still no OTA yet for me. i read that it can take up to 2 weeks, but that only leaves a few days left...
Honestly, if I were you guys, I'd take the plunge and root. The OTA still has several bugs that we've worked out in the rooted ROMs, plus a lot of helpful extra features.
well i flashed the 605.2 gb from august while having s-on, so i'm stuck for now unless unrevoked comes up with a fix.
after hearing all about the problems with the OTA... i am thinking of finally rooting..
i just dont know how or where to start.. is there a good link that will go threw it .. how much room do i need on my SD card .. what programs / apps do i need.. stupid stuff like that..
thank you .. i know i am a noob..

yeah i know of unrevoked.. that is the first step .. turning S off .. super user on.. i guess.. then you pick your rom that you want .. and flash that on to it from the SD card..
is each rom flashed on the same way?
how big of an SD card do you need.. for back ups and nandroids? how much room is needed.. or do they take up?
and how do you make back ups?
is this all pretty much self explanatory as you go?
what is the best sense 3.0 rom? and where do you find it.. and is there instructions for it as well..
is there one link.. some where for step by steps?
thank you again all.. i am learning.. it takes time .. and i appreciate all your knowledge..
I would say at least an 8gb card is good, that's what I use. If you plan on having this phone for awhile, the bigger the sd card the better primarily so if you listen to music on your phone, record/watch videos, photos, etc. Nandroids take up about 800mb's depending on the size of the rom, I use gingersense (sense + gingerbread) roms so that may increase the file size.
Backups are made using either Rom Manager (available in the market, just download the free version) or via Recovery. You need Rom Manager first!!! You get to Recovery by holding Volume Down button + Power button while your phone is turned completely off.
I don't do rom suggestions, it's all personal preference.
Each of the following links are easily found on the first page of the Droid Incredible Development Section. They are not all-inclusive and are not up to date but this is a valuable base for info:

After successfully rooting, you may need to download Rom Manager from the market and Superuser. Next, make a backup either through Rom Manager or by turning off your phone holding "Volume Down & Power button" until your phone boots up with a white screen. Use the volume up/down to highlight "Recovery" in the white bootloader/hboot screen. Press the power button to select "Recovery."
I think this is a good deal of info for one post
which unrevoked do i use.. ?

Search "Unrevoked" in google as that is the only way to go. Check out the first four or five threads over in the Droid Incredible Development Section for background info on rooting.

which unrevoked do i use.. ?
is it easier to do it on mac ? or pc ?
Using unrevoked via Mac is way easier than the pc version. Idk about Linux, I know nothing about it. The Mac version does not require you to install drivers, merely just run the program.
I think i''ve finally decided to root too (got phone at release date; so it's been a while).
Basically all I want to be able to do is tether to my xoom. Will I need a special rom for that or will wifi tether work magically after rooting?
No need for a custom rom for free tethering. I recommend the app "wifi tether", it's not available on the market (thanks Verizon!) so Google it and download it from the code.google page.
^^thank you. I got the wi fi app several months ago because I knew I'd be rooting at some time in the future (I've been contemplating this for a while lol). I have all the files ready (android usb drivers and reflash.exe) but just haven't bitten the bullet to root yet. I was waiting on GB release before I rooted, but after hearing about all the issues, I think I have finally decided to root and forget GB.
Definitely best to root first and flash one of the rooted GB roms in the development section (if you're wanting to upgrade to GB). As of right now, there's no way to root once you're updated to GB, so it's good that you decided to root first. You can always go back to stock/S-ON if you need to as well. Rooting is pretty painless with unrevoked and you won't lose your apps/data. Feel free to ask about any other questions or concerns you may have!
I haven't started yet; plan to do it later tonight. But once I run reflash will that give me s-off or is there another step for that?

yes, I read that in other threads and that pretty much cinched it for me that I would not be accepting the GB OTA update. 3 months ago, I was waiting for GB before I rooted, but after learning that if I accept GB I will no longer be able to root, I decided I'd rather have root than GB. Plus I know there are many GB roms if I decide I want to go that route. But let's see how painless this rooting goes before I start talking roms
I plan to use Enlightened's rooting instructions from the IncredibleForum. I hope this is as simple as it sounds in the thread instructions there.
Looked at those instructions and they look on point. You may run into an error message when first trying to run unrevoked, when it happened to me I just retried and it worked fine. As long as you have the right drivers you should be fine. I did it on a mac so I can't really help with the drivers, I'd just recommend using the modified unrevoked drivers like it says in the how-to you were talking about.
The rooted stock GB ROMs in the development have been very stable for me so I second the proposal to go that route. If you were to run into issues and need to use different recoveries, dougpiston.com is an excellent resource.
I have Windows Vista Home Premium, I have downloaded HTC Sync 6 times and twice from the UK Link. Can not get it to work at all.
T-Mobile G2 2.3.4 Gingerbread
I can't even put ringtones on my phone manually!
Someone help me pretty please!
The main features of HTC Sync will only work with an HTC Sense ROM, so if you have a T-Mobile ROM it won't work.
HTC Sync is still useful for giving you the USB drivers though. So you should still be able to turn on USB storage on your phone so that the SD card is mounted onto your PC and then you can copy ringtones etc.
Of course, another option is to put your phone's SD card into the PC via an SD reader if you have one.

Thank you so much for your quick response.

hi,
OK problem is explained, really thank you, but how to use synchronisation with T-Mobile ROM based phone ? Can I use a rooting, flashing or some developers tricks to get a Sense ROM to my T-Mobile G2 ? I found on this forum many ROMs but I do not know which I may use, if it is possible. Finally - I want to use my T-Mobile G2 use with HTC sync. Of course, I can use it like a USB stick but it is not what I am looking for only.
thank you
Yes,
Downgrade, root, flash dz hboot, flash sense rom
If you have trouble following these steps look to the xda or cyanogen root wiki first, then Google your next question, then use the search option in xda for your next question.
By then you will know all there is to know...
But feel free to come back here if you get stuck

Course you can get USB drivers without installing HTC Sync, and still be able to do stuff like adb/fastboot as well as mounting the mass storage.
ie: HTCDriver3.0.0.007.exe

Pick just about any 'sense' rom in the android development section. Preferably one that's 3.5 or older (Gingerbread) for maximum hardware compatibility.
