to be specific, is there to have a wifi hotspot without root? i've tried pdanet as well as foxfi but the wifi hotspot didn't work on 2.3 but the bluetooth tether worked but didn't want to go through the hassle of jailbreakin my wife's apple stuff just to tether through bluetooth and her laptop doesn't have bluetooth.
does wifi hotspot work on 4.0 for either pdanet or foxfi?
before you tell me to root, i do use google play movies because i hook up my phone to my monitor and watch from there and its cheaper than physically buying it and its always with me on my phone and online. if i root, it wont let me use it, i've tried and quickly went back to stock.
that is strange that google play didn't allow you to watch movies while root access was enabled. I use miui with root access and google play movies work for me. Did you try ClockworkMod Tether claims no root access needed. How is it that your phone can function without root access?

dude, i always have one of the worst luck with phones when rooting or unlocking bootloaders is concerned... i used to use adb terminal through command prompt but i haven't used it in a while and i reformatted my laptop since then so i obviously forgot how to use since i only used it a few times a long time ago (probably between 1.5 and 2.1 days) so i forgot it all.
yeah, i've tried rooting with the atrix and it wouldn't let me access play movies because it detected that my phone was rooted and also did the same with my first ion before the battery went kaput. with the atrix, i learned that stock is more stable for me, especially when i was using the lapdock and i don't remember if i needed root to modify the entitlement check for tethering.
lol yes so stock works perfectly fine without root... ironically. too bad my phone isn't able to unlock bootloader if it comes out. but, i'll checkout the cwm tether. does it hide usage from carrier like foxfi?
not sure always used open vpn connections to hide what I was doing.

checked it out, and it works but its wired tether. i mean for laptops it'll work fine so it can keep my phone charged at the same time but, i primarily need tether for tablets and multiple devices at once.

i was debating flashing over to the lt28i firmware but i got intimidated by the steps to do so and i finally set up my phone (second ion), apps, settings, widgets, to the way i like it. also, i can't remember if it was the lt28h or lt28i that had issues that i have never experienced before on lt28at.
Well since google no longer blocks root access for movies you should just try root any non-root teathers I have seen are limited in functions.
or you can try MIUI rom since it has built in teathering and vpn services
Okay. So, I am thinking about rooting my phone, epic 4g touch from sprint, so that I can tether for free. Now, I do online banking and other stuff work related on my phone. If I do root, do I get to control what permissions different apps are allowed to access? For example, an app that requires the use of the camera, can I disable that app from using that permission? Can apps get into the root directory without my permission? Sorry, I am new to this rooting.
your phone will be used as a node in a malicious botnet controlled by either the Chinese government or alquaida if you root.

I thought foxfi started charging for data transfer?
and no you will not just "get access" to control what apps do. you still just have to be cautious and aware of what apps you download, what you are sharing or who is connected while tethering. I would recommend rooting and using the native hotspot hack found in this forum or go Google Android wireless tether and use the native android tethering app. your personal data should be as safe as it is without root as long as you you trusted apps.

Okay. Thank you. I went ahead and downloaded the foxfi from the link provided in the google play store and I downloaded the pdanet tablet (new) from the play store. I was able to hook up my galaxy tab 2 7.0 to my epic 4g touch via bluetooth and tested the internet on the browser and it worked. I went to yahoo and search testing to make sure. I just want to make sure I won't be charged on my phone bill right?
Also, one more question. Will my phone and tablet be secure if I am using bluetooth? I don't want someone to snoop into my connection and see what I'm doing.

Bluejacking, bluesnarfing or bluebugging. Bluejacking is harmless just a forced message sent as a Bluetooth contact. Bluesnarfing allows limited access to data such as contacts and calendar and bluebugging allows total takeover of the device. There's also a method to use nfc enabled devices and "bump" data off of ppl by using nfcs bump to send feature and forcing a target device to dump all of its data to your device when you pass in range

Okay. I've been doing more reading on rooting phone. So, basically, if I don't allow any apps access to root and I don't delete or modify anything from root, my phone is just as safe as a non-rooted phone? No apps can access root without me explicitly giving it permission. Can malware access root without me given it permission?

It has something to do with what I quoted. He was asking if something could gain root without his permission. The Exynos exploit allows just that. Even without root, a malicious app can gain root and run itself. The exynos abuse app can patch that door.

So, basically, a malware could gain root access even if the phone is not rooted. I've been reading old articles about password being store and anyone can gain access to the file with the passwords. Has this been fixed?

Wouldn't matter anyways. If I physically have your phone in my possession it doesn't matter what security you have, given enough time all your data would belong to me whether it was encrypted or not. The file with passwords stored in it has to be accessed from the device itself unless someone was able to clone your phone and manipulate it remotely. Which, while not being the hardest task on the planet, is cumbersome and time consuming so it's much easier to bonk you over the head and take it, if you really had something someone wanted. Which your average user does not.

I live in the UK and had been using the FTV since it came out. I have been using vyprVPN on my router loaded with DD-WRT. So I am able to access all of the US content. Since I rooted my FTV last night, everytime I go into Hulu (from the FTV) the IP address I use gets flagged by Hulu and I am not able to use that IP anymore. Has root enabled the FTV to provide some extra information to the Hulu server to flag those IP addresses? I did not have an issue before I rooted. I don't want to keep using different addresses until I figure out what's going on. So far only Hulu is flagging the addresses, Amazon, Netflix etc work fine. I checked the SU app, Hulu does not have root access. Any ideas?
Unroot then reset and see what happens. It might just be a new measure from Hulu that started around the time you rooted.
Try installing Root Cloak - Hulu's always been top drawer paranoid about content leakage, and it would not surprise me if they were asking the OS "hey, is there a copy of su in /system?" and reporting back to the mothership if one is seen.
Don't know if RC helps with Hulu.

Thanks, Ill give this a try when i get home
UPDATE: it did not work, I tried it with a new IP address, I was able to watch about 15. It kicked me off and when I came back, the IP was flagged. The odd part is that this only happens with the rooted FTV. I use my rooted GS4 to watch hulu. I have not have an issue. I used it today just fine.
The part that sucks is that once the IP is flagged, It cannot be used to stream from hulu from any other device or browser. I removed root and the IP flagging stopped. I guess I will need to stay unrooted in order to use hulu....

You could try to use a tablet version Hulu instead of the Amazon's or get one of the Root Blocker tools and see if HUlu works with it enabled like OTA Rootkeeper. Could be they tied their HUlu app into their VOD.
How the Netflix app running, smooth?
Netflix runs great on mine. Depending on your connection. If I use my phone for connection and in Sprint spark territory I receive HD content. Same for home network.
Yes Netflix is gorgeous on the 10.5. Give it about 30 seconds or so for the HD movie to buffer and it looks incredible.
The Netflix and youtube apps have been optimized by Samsung for this device. They look spectacular. It's third party video apps that suffer with extreme Pixelation and ghosting in dark scenes. Such as Crackle, Cable Provider Apps and other streaming services.
Mine doesn't even let me activate it, I mean, I'm just entering the app for the first time, when I enter my Email and password is telling me that the device can't be activated, I called Netflix and the only thing they told me was to uninstall it and reinstall it and when I told them that this one came pre-installed that I can't uninstall it just turn it off, he didn't even know what to tell me.
They are telling me to contact Samsung, so go figure...

Please call Netflix and/or Samsung so they know that this isn't an isolated problem and worth together to fix it.
I called Samsung and basically told me to reset to factory, I asked them if they guarantee me that doing that will fix my issue and they couldn't, so I told them that I wasn't in the mood of just wasting hours that took me to set this today just to see if that fixes it and if at least they have a reliable backup solution where I could simply reset and restore I'd do it, but not with the joke they call Kies, and that I have had all their Galaxies s, both Gears and now the Tab S, so I do like them but must admit that their backup solution is a joke and is a shame that they seem to not care about do something at least like LG has.
I called back Netflix and this time they were asking and escalating the call and in waiting for a call back.
Just for curiosity and trying to cover all the bases, are you on the Continental US? I live in Puerto Rico and I'm just wondering if this could be some Region issue.
Just to let you know that after trying all day at the office where I'm the System Manager so I have full online access as usual with all my previous and actual android devices, and after talking to Samsung and Netflix guys I just cane home and guess what, I could activate Netflix without a hiccup, so what can be different with this Netflix app on this Tablet that is the first device that I couldn't activate the Netflix app but everything else was working perfectly, even more, I used the OEM browser and Chrome and went to Netflix and login from there and saw everything perfectly, so the proviene was always the Netflix App.
Let me wait for Netflix call as they haven't call yet and see what they think after I explain this to them.
The Netflix app has worked flawlessly for me from day 1.
Netflix worked for me right from the get go and it was one of the first things I tried when I got my 8.4".
The picture looks great, I'm not even sure what the highest resolution one can stream using Netflix.
I was able to get it working as well. I went into the application manager and uninstalled the update. Then, let it reupdate from the Google Play store and it worked fine.

They never called me yesterday, but after trying at home and worked I'm sure they just re-adjusted something on their end, that's the only explanation why suddenly it worked after not working for a full day, I'm assuming that they just changed something and let me try it again by myself instead of call me, that can explain why yours is working now also. I did what you are mentioning here about 5 times and nothing worked before, so if now is working then maybe something was changed after my couple of calls.

Netflix streams 4k video now, breaking bad, and ghostbusters I know for sure are 4k. I don't know if it will convert or look better though on the Samsung tab S? Let me know if you notice any difference?
I picked up the 8.4 S yesterday and I think it's clear that this is the best device for Netflix I have ever used. I checked out both the 8.4 and the 10.5 at the dealer and felt that the 8.4 was superior due to the pixel density giving it a sharper look.
To some extent I didn't feel the 10.5 was any better than the Note 10.1 2014 and I have always felt that video was a bit blurry on the larger screens. The display density on the 8.4 is just perfect and Netflix and Youtube are impressive.
I got the 10.5. 32Gb. Love it. No problem seeing up Netflix. When I started the the stock Netflix app it requested an update. After that it run smoothly.

I noticed some of you said that Netflix was already installed. For some reason mine wasn't.
I wonder why?
As I thought there was an exclusive Netflix app for the tab s. If I download Netflix from play store is it the same app?
Also for those that have the Netflix app pre installed is it not deletable then?
Mine came with Netflix pre installed. I can't delete it, only uninstall the updates.

Helix was working perfectly on 5.0.3 .
Firetv updated from 5.0.3 to 5.0.5 automatically, and I installed Jarvis via Firestarter.
Since then videos are stopping every 5-20 minutes. Not sure if its 5.0.5 related or Jarvis related. Maybe I need to change buffer settings or something?

Thank you for the detailed post.
Yes, I am able to do all that and i could invest an hour or more to find the best solution that will allow kingroot and kodi to work perfectly fine together..
Or I could invest 5 minutes to remove kingroot (a software that i don't really need) and fix the issue that way.
Well, as my time is valuable to me I choose the faster way and removed kingroot. And look, the problem is gone. Hurray!
There is a clear cause and effect here.
1) Kodi workes flawless
2) Kingroot was installed
3) Kodi stops playback with a black screen in random intervalls
4) Kingroot was removed
5) Kodi works flawless again.
But yes, it could be my Internet connection (well it is the same with and without kingroot), or my network (oh it is also the same) or the NAS (well, it is the same) or the file on the NAS (right.. it the SAME), or the version of the AFTV or Kodi... But it seems unlikely, because none of that changed.
Kingroot is the only thing that changed, the only variable. And removing Kingroot fixed the damn problem.

I am perfectly capable to debug something like that and i checked a few things before coming here. Oh, i didn't wrote that because I am not the OP and I was just replying with a success to a proposed solution.
Both my NAS and my AFTV is connected using gigabit LAN and no, it was not a dropped stream. A dropped stream could be seen in the kodi event log, and no.. Nothing at all in the event log. Oh, and the debug log overlay was perfectly normal, but the blackout happend anyway. My NAS was sending data to the AFTV without any problem and then it suddenly dropped when the AFTV went black.
The AFTV went into sleep mode (or it looked like that) with a black screen. You had to press a key on the remote to wake the AFTV and see kodi again. The video was stopped.
I have an unit that does the same thing (video stops every 5 to 20 minutes) and it was rooted with kingroot, the other 3 units I run in my house have no issues at all so it is not my wifi, internet, NAS or file issue. I do not believe the rooting process is the cause that makes this unit drop the video but it is the other programs that kingroot installs. I know for a fact I press by mistake the optimization option in kingroot and that may had change the way this units acts. I did not have time to investigate since however tonight I will remove kingroot, clean the whole system file, run the unit to see if that fixed it and then re-root it again staying away from any other options in kingroot.
Could it be the version of kingroot we used? - I used v4.8.
That may explain why some of us have problems and some not however I still believe it was my mistake and I will try to prove that tonight, if someone else here wants to try my theory please go ahead we will stop all this nonsense "blame".
I got the same issue an my device, also rooted with Kingroot 4.8.
Since rbox is working on TWRP and prerooted roms, I guess the issue is gone soon anyway

Slightly off topic I am finding this update more stable on my atv1 , now if I switch to another app while watchin youtube iI can then switch back and the video will resume wareas previously it would restart the app ( similar on other apps also).

What version of kingroot did you use? So far are a couple of people stating they used v4.8 (including myself) that are having issues.
Also had video stopping after a few minutes after rooting AFTVv1 5.0.5 with Kingroot.
After unrooting and uninstalling from within the Kingroot app this issue is gone.
Further, the breakage of Wukong's mouse mode is solved, too.
