Battery gone bad?? - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a year old EVO and love it. But lately the battery life f'in sucks. Just today I was using it at work, the battery was at 70% then the device shut off. I rebooted to find the battery at 0%???
I have been on Synergy Rom (Non God Mode) and Freedom Aggressive for months, but it seems the battery is just getting worse and worse. Could it be as simple as a bad battery? Or should I try a less aggressive kernel?
bummed about my phone, and not ready to upgrade just yet... have to wait till may ..
So I just hooked up to the computer to charge and reboot, now it shows at 83%. WTF???
Thanks for any input or advice in advance...

Try undervolting your kernel using viperMOD, or try this trick by zeppelinrox: Calibrating Without Downtime!

Get the F out of here?
Im running into the same issue. Phone is almost a year old, running Mik 2.59 with the agressive freedom. WTF is going on? Im going to try the links above and see what that does. For real though, same thing, charged at 80% then phone shuts off turn back on its at zero, then plug it in to charge and it's at 55%. crazy!!!! Hopefully the tips will help. thanks
edit: The calibrating without downtime wont work. When you pull the battery the phone won't boot at all. This must be a motorolla thing where the phone will still boot without the battery. Didnt try the vipermod tip yet.

I'm experiencing a similar issue - I'll pull it off the charger at 100%, check a few emails on my way to work and i'm suddenly sitting at 70%...sits on my desk with an occasional email check and by lunch I'm at 25%...I can play a few hands of solitaire and watch my battery drop by 10% in less than 5 minutes...or surf the net and see it dropping a % a minute or more ... even sitting in a full 5 bar svc area.
I'm starting to wonder if my choice of Synergy RLS1 with the Freedom (Universal) kernal is the cause.
I'm Evo 4G
Synergy RLS1
Kernel: 2.6.35.10-Freedom-v0.7.6-HAVS+ [email protected] #1
baseband: 2.15.00.0808
software: 4.24.651.1 (no updates to Synergy since the last OTA)
PRI: 2.15_003
PRL: 60681
Any suggestions or tips or ideas for a new ROM/Kernel combo (prefer Sense 3 or higher) are welcome!

This is what I came up with after thinking my ROM was messing my phone up. Check it out. Since my phone was almost one year old, I figured I should check to see if battery was good anymore. I went to Sprint to check it and sure enough the battery was bad. Changed it out and now my battery life is back to normal, even better with the ROM and
kernal I'm running

Try this....it worked for me a little while ago when i had batt issues....charge your phone to full while its on... Then turn the device off and unplug the charger ....wait till the led turns off then plug it back in...wait until it charges to full and them repeat. Unplug...wait for led to go away and charge again...after a few times repeating this process boot into recovery and wipe the battery stats and reboot and unplug from charger...did that and i got a 16 hour batt with moderate usage and no extended battery... Hope this helps

Dead battery cells

How do I know if battery cells are going out?
I have had the oem battery seance July. I'm a moderate to heavy user. I roughly. Get about 8hrs with setcpu, myn 's rls4 and HTC #17.
My battery will drop from a full charge. To 85 % in about 10 min in sleep mode after. That it drans at a normal rate. This started last week after I used a ebay car charger once.
I've wiped battery stats at full and no effect.
Thanks in advance
Same setup as you..changed kernel from #17 to #10..not much better..now with Kings #11 CFS with No SetCPU program and quite a bit better. My EVO running myns is HW 0003. I just switched from stock battery to using a Sprint extended battery a few weeks ago. Also, if you have a 4g toggle..even though its not on..it may be and sucking down your battery. Run alogcat to verify. Once 4g is toggled on via some widgets..it doesnt shut off, even if off is pressed...waits until phone is turned off or rebooted. On some others it is actually turns on automatically when phone is started or rebooted. If you dont have 4G like me..i dont want it on, even if i did I expect it to go off when toggled off. Some glitch apparently on HTCs end apparently.

If my phone reports the same findings as your replies, I'm afraid I gotta find that useful thread on 4g toggle widget-off thingy, sheit...my phone is lagging btw.

[Q] Seriously? Cyanogen ROM kills battery like this?

I have done a bunch of reading since my first flash to Cyanogen's 6.1 but not finding really satisfactory answers.
With the old rooted stock deodexed...I was getting about 14-15hrs of moderate-high use. So basically I pulled the cord at around 7am and plugged back in around 6pm with about 40%.
Was fine.
Flashed 6.1 last night and now I am two hours off charge and sitting at 58%!! I have all syncs turned off and I have no wifi/gps/4g running. The ONLY widget at the moment is weather and it only updates when I hit refresh.
My search has shown something called battery calibration...but that doesn't make sense to me. I have done the long charge, power off charge, power on charge etc... But since I have a wall battery charger I have just moved away from that and occasionally swap out my batteries for a full charge in that thing.
Does that 6.1 REALLY need another voodoo approach to battery life? Also the threads I have found seem to be for the nexus one or the HTC Magic(?).
Anyone else suffering HORRIBLE battery life after flashing 6.1?
Anyone got a link to a fix for the EVO and maybe something that I can get through the day with (do not have my charger at work)?
When I flashed CM7 to my wife's phone the battery was horrible (Less than 2 hours). I recalibrated the battery and the next charge lasted 2 days. Give this a try:
Battery recalibration
If you're experiencing higher than normal battery drain, try the following:
Charge the device to full battery; let it keep charging until the battery says it is fully charged. Do not just wait until the light is green, it isn't always fully charged, causing a lot of inaccuracies. (You can check by going to: Settings -> About device -> Status -> Battery Level = Full.)
Boot to recovery mode and delete the battery stats
NOTE: To have the most accurate of battery stats, reboot the device immediately after wiping the battery stats and wait for CyanogenMod to boot completely to the desktop. Once your entire boot is done and you have full access to the device, go ahead and pull the charger and continue with this troubleshooter.
Do not charge the device until after draining the battery completely, resulting in it automatically shutting off.
Recharge the device completely and then use as you normally would.
Also, CM6.1 or CM7 should get decent battery life. If it still doesn't try flashing a different kernal. I found that savaged zen bfs sbc kernal extended my life considerably.

Yea Cm6 is dated. But that shouldn't matter.. I actually had fantactic battery when I was on cm6, much better than what I get on cm7.
First, check spare parts for wakelocks and make sure you don't have any. After that, follow Fazulkas advice to reset battery stats, follow it correctly tho. I never thought wiping stats would make a difference, but it surely does.
Ok, I'll try that process when I get home tonight. (Guess I can survive w/o a phone for a few hours?!?! :^O) Haven't set up more than just the google account on this ROM as I wanted to test it first. So maybe tomorrow it will win me over.
DATED?!?! LOL! It was only just a final release a few months back...;^) It has all the important stuff working where as 7 doesn't and it is still a RC.
:^P
(Have you seen my sig? Old dogs only try the proven tricks thank you very much. :^)
CM6 is not dated. In fact CM 6.1.3 is the most current stable-release version of CM available!

Its not the ROM. Anytime you flash a ROM, you need to calibrate your battery. By calibrate it isn't the plug in over and over method.
You charge to 100%, discharge it fully. Charge back to 100% then wipe battery stats in recovery. Then use your phone.

There is your problem. Anytime you flash a new rom, you need to give it at least a day or two to fully calibrate everything in the rom.

[Q] Weird HTC Wildfire Battery Meter Issue

ROM : Cyanogenmod 7.1.0.1 Android 2.3.7 <<< Doubt this is important
Kernel: 2.6.35.14-nFinity [email protected] #1 <<< Might be important
S-ON
Okay so my Battery meter is definitely acting up. After charging the battery overnight it only charges to about 89%, maybe 91% if I'm lucky.
If I unplug and immediately reboot the device the battery meter says 98% or 97% at startup. Right now I have a reboot scheduler app that restarts my phone every morning at 4AM so that it's accurate-ish in the morning.
But that's not the only issue...
When I use my phone during the day, maybe making a call or two, on a 2G network to save battery, no Wifi or Bluetooth use and phone not overclocked, my battery drains incredibly fast. It goes down 15%-20% per hour! By about 3PM the phone says 15% left and then slowly drains down to 3% battery life. This is when it gets real weird... The battery level stays on 3% for about 6-8 hours, then finally goes to 2,1 and then dies. I got 3.5-4 hours on 3% with max overclock (768mhz on performance setting), maximum brightness, screen doesn't turn off, playing music while on HSDPA network, bluetooth on... So the battery doesn't seem to be the problem, only the battery reading that is displayed.
I tried going back to the default software that came with the phone, Android 2.1 with Sense and original kernel. The battery drain was a little slower but same effect, staying forever on 3%.
Can someone please explain to me why the phone does this? It's not a trainsmash, at least the phone isn't really draining as fast as it looks, but I effectively have no idea how much time the battery has left, which isn't ideal. It still lasts me the day and I charge it every night but I'd like to have this solved, it wasn't always like this. The phone is now 10 months old.
Any help at all will be greatly appreciated.

I sent in my Wildfire for repair. Got it back and it's not the chipset.
Its something to do with clockwork or Cyanogen.
The battery was fine until I re-flashed them.
Now it's back to the same ****ty battery life before I sent it.
Soon as I get home. I am going to flash a new rom. Possibly an older clockwork and flash a new radio.
Will post results.

If you notice the first thread, people who have never rooted/modded are also experiencing this. But, in either case, do post your results.

True, but in my case I know the problem to an extent.
I remember now that the battery starting acting up after updating to newest Clockwork recovery.
So I will flash that first. Run tests.
Flash Radio. Run tests.
Flash Rom (non-cyanogen). Run tests.
I shall do tests 1 day at a time maybe if tests prove a posotive results then I will do 2 on the same day.
Don't forget to re-calibrate the battery before your tests. It's a major cause of battery drain on Custom ROMs.
Ah, yes. Almost forgot :3

Boostmobile evo battery drain!! Help!!

Hello all, I hope all is well! I have a huge problem... I've been running my evo on the boost network for the last two months and have been getting no more than 4 hours of battery use from every rom I use. I even tried the old destroyer rom and a number of different kernals. Im in need of help as soon as possible!!
How about a little more info. What battery are you using? How old is it? Have u checked to see what is running? Did this start as soon as you switched networks?
Im using the stock battery and its only about 3 months old... It was a claim from asurion. It started happening soon as I switched networks. While on sprint I could easily get a day 1/2 usage.

It could have something to do with your radios, or just be a random coincidence with something else that's causing the drain. I'm not familiar with flashing to Boost at all, so I don't know if you have a different set of radios, PRI/NV, etc. You could try flashing a different radio, newer or older.
Supersonic Evo 4G | MIUI | Tapatalk
Just updated to the latest radios and battery still sucks!
I have Boost too.
The battery drains quicker with low or no signal.
download Spare Parts and check Partial Wake Usage, this will tell you if an app or apps are causing this.
Well I GUESS THIS IS DEAD...
Be sure to calibrate your battery whenever you flash a new ROM to optimize battery life. I prefer to calibrate using this method:
1) While your phone is powered on, charge the battery until the LED turns green.
2) Unplug the phone from the charger and wait until the LED turns off.
3) Now power off your phone.
4) When the phone is off, plug the charger into the phone and charge it until the LED turns green.
5) With the phone still off, unplug the charger and wait until the LED turns off.
6) Now power on the phone.
7) Wait until the phone is booted completely and then power off the phone again.
8) When the phone is off again plug the charger into your phone and charge it until the LED turns green.
9) Now boot your phone into recovery mode and navigate to the "Advanced" option using the volume up and down keys and then choose the option "Wipe Battery Stats."
10) Now reboot your phone and use it normally. You should notice improved battery life.

Wiping battery stats is actually been found to be ineffective/cause more harm than good the best way to actually "calibrate" the battery is to backup your rom flash to aosp or froyo with an sbc kernel let your phone drain til it powers off boot it back up and let it shut off again usually only takes a few mins sometimes it wont power on again, plug in charger wait til red led stops blinking turn the phone on and charge it to 100 uninterupted and leave it plugged in for 15-30 mins at 100% then nandroid back to your back up do this once a month or find an aosp setup u like and stick with it, the myth of sbc damaging li ion batteries is just that a myth newer phones have trickle charging kernels stock now such as the rezound et4g and a few others that i dont remember off the top of my head

Well, everyone has their own opinions. For me, I prefer the method I posted over the app for battery calibration, because I get better results. Also, I've never heard of any negative side-effects from wiping battery stats, but feel free to do what you wish.

Monday and Tuesday I stayed in New Orleans Louisiana. I typically had 5 bars as far as signal goes.. While there I didn't have to charge the phone at all for 2 days with heavy usage might I add. The minute I made it back to my small town, the battery started to drain incredibly fast! So I've come to the conclusion that it is the poor service that drains the battery. With that being said, I would like to thank you all for your input!

Serious Battery Problems with EVO (Tried New Batteries)

I have a very serious problem with my HTC Evo 4G. For the past few months my battery life has been atrocious.
I charge my phone overnight and at 7AM its at 100% and after barely using it my battery drops down to around 35% at 9-10AM.
When I initially loaded my ROM I had the wake lock issue where my up time and wake time were the same. I fixed that by loading the correct radio versions mentioned in this fix: www.xda-developers.com/android/the-definitive-wake-lock-issue-fix-for-evo/. I no longer have a wake lock problem but it did not improve my battery situation.
I thought my battery was on it's way out and getting a new one would solve my problems. I purchased two new batteries and I have the same exact problem.
I tried using the BatteryCalibration app to calibrate my battery but that also did nothing.
One interesting thing to note is that my battery will die and my phone will completely shut off but if I plug it into the charger for less than 10 minutes it shows 50% battery.
I am using the latest Scott's CleanROM 2.0 ROM which is based off of the official Sprint RUU 4.67.651.3.
Baseband Version: 2.15.00.05.02

Boot into recovery and wipe battery stats and see if that helps.
I think in general the batteries are awful for this phone. I bought an extended battery with case, it sticks out a little but it lasts the whole day or two.
When I got the new battery it said that it needs to be conditioned 3-4 times before seeing any improvements or it will show incorrect percentage.
Try wiping your battery stats as posted above. I still doubt that will fix your problem but hey, you might get lucky.
If you are smart and you pay the extra money for insurance on the phone then take it to the nearest Sprint store.
I know you are beyond frustrated but it's simple to backup your stuff, flash stock and have s-off to now be s-on.
You are thinking too hard.
& the battery part, yes they are completely worthless but should last 6+ hours even if the battery is 1+ years old.
Good luck to you sir. Happy fixing.

I'm having a very similar issue with mine. It's the original battery, which was lasting a suprisingly long while for a 2+ year old battery. Like, virtually no degradation of performance from when the phone was new. Then, very suddenly, about a month ago my phone would just...die. Not power down, simply die. I'd reboot it, to find my battery indicator telling me it's at 0%, then die again seconds later. Plugging it in, it would charge to full in under ten minutes. Unplug, and it won't even last 5 minutes of useage. I mean, 2 minutes is pushing it before my screen just goes black. I suspected my battery to have taken a very spontaneous dump (it *is* old by battery standards), but I pulled the supposedly 0% battery and metered it...my 3.7v battery measures a very healthy 3.8v+. Unless there's a control circuit in the battery that reports to the phone, I don't think it's my battery. So, the question is...what the hell could have happened to my phone to FUBAR the battery readings so badly?
My phone is completely stock, unrooted, running kernel 2.6.35.10-g94d0005. Any brilliant ideas?
