how to overclock? - Droid Incredible Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I rooted Incredible for a while ago.
how do u over clock?

Flash a kernel appropirate for your rom that supports overclocking. Then use SetCPU or a script to set your overclock frequency.

I downloaded ROM manager for a while ago.
Is this gonna support overclocking?

No, like previously stated you need the appropriate kernel and an app like SetCPU to control it.
Sense ROM = Sense Kernel
AOSP ROM = AOSP Kernel
What ROM are you running?
EDIT: I assuming you are running stock 2.2 rooted...? If that's the case, you'd need a Sense 2.2 kernel.
There's a list of kernels located in this thread.

this Incredible is 2.2 Froyo, and rooted
so
Is sense 2.2 kernel in Market?

Kernel question.

What is it and what is the benefit to. What kernels should I stay away from?

From my knowlege a Kernel is what shares info between the operating system and cpu...its like the bridge between the two (correct me if im wrong guys, don't flame me lol)and to what kernel you should be using is all you're choice, every kernel has a different build...some for performance, some specific to a certain distro of linux...so do some research and pick the one which is recommended for the rom you're running.
Thanks for the info. What do you install first, the rom our the kernel?

Definitely decide what ROM you want to use first, then find out which kernels are supported. For example, I am on DamageControl 3.2.3 and running the DC Netarchy OC Kernel because it was tweaked specifically for the ROM.

Does it matter in which order you install the ROM and kernel though?

Most if not ALL ROMS include a kernel. So if you flash a different kernel, then flash the ROM, the different kernel you flashed will be lost. So in short; ROM then different kernel.
most of the roms contain a stock kernel. the custom kernels for most of the roms are actually forks from the GoDmOdE community kernel. most of the time netarchy and the others kernel devs do beta testing of their changes before informing me to pull them in to the mainline kernel. this takes all the bugs and repeated commits out of the mainline and works them out before they are pulled in.
Thank you.

Any kernels you can use with the stock rom?

Can the stock rom be overclocked.
Can anyone help?

Yup just flash a custom kernel that can be OCED like ziggys kernel or chads kernel (dont use the latest one just use the 12/23/202-sense kernel)

Which has greater battery life? And where is the ziggy one?

never mind i just remembered that ziggy had taken all his kernels down until final release. You'll have to use chad's incredikernel sense kernel dont try the newer ones read whats in huge letters in the OP
i like hydro kernals ssuv
I've been using the Incredikernel for a few days now, and seems like it's pretty nice.

Stock kernel for HTC Desire?

Does anyone have a link for a stock kernel which would be compatible with my set up (in sig)?
I want to try a stock rom to see if I can get sky go to work on my desire as it can't be used on a rooted device, others have had success by changing their kernel.
Thanks in advance.
As far as I know you are stuck with thalamus' kernel if you are running Oxygen rom.

So it is. But imho that's not really a disadvantage: _thalamus' kernel is a good one.

I agree. He does come to me as somewhat arrogant but I got to admit the dude haz teh skillz.
Could I try a stock rom and kernel and then go back to my current set up or would I then be unrooted?
Well you can "try" and flash the kernel I am using I suppose... but as far as I know it will break your camera and probably some other stuff I don't know. Do a nandbackup just in case you want to be adventurous. You only wanna find out if Sky would work if you change kernels first right?

Yes that's right, it has to be a stock kernel as sky do a check on the kernel before the stream loads apparently.
Well if it's stock kernel that it requires, then you have to use the official Sense based rom and kernel. All sense roms here uses a custom kernel so you are out of luck. You can't use Sense kernel on AOSP roms anyway.
OK cheers
I will have to wait for techy people to hack the sky go app then.
Depending on how Sky works, you can try and flash one those sense based roms. Who knows, the custom kernel they have might work. I have the impression that they are all based on the original sense kernel anyway. Or just wait for someone to hack the app.

This is a know issues. Run the overclock with 787mhz. Some phones aren't able to run 806mhz. Hope it works for you.
any other way?

[Q] Max frequency locked at 1300MHz

I'm currently using ARHD 33.1 and flashed the lONELyX #022 kernel, but my maximum frequency is capped at 1.3 Ghz.
Powersave is off and i've disabled EDP limitation and disabled the cap at 1.3GHz, but i still can't achieve 1.5GHz, can anyone tell me why this isnt working?
I've searched through the kernel thread but others seem to be able to get to 1.4 or 1.5, and I can't find an answer

Your kernel may not support 1.5ghz or there's a problem with the overclocking app your using.
Give me the link of the thread!

i used it till yesterday evening and 1.5 GHz was working... does it happen only with #22 LI? did you use UV or normal version? have you installed custom apps that can handle CPU max freq? have you tried to flash it again/another kernel/another kernel version and/or another hotplug?

Used the non UV version, I have SetCPU installed to handle the freq, i can set it to 1.5GHz, but it doesnt go above 1.3, even on performance governor, i've flashed different versions of this kernel, LS, LM, but none let me go to 1.5GHz.
