did they ever incorporate / turn on the fm radio in GB ? does legendary rom support it ?
There is a radio app out for the i9000, but I've never been able to get it to work on my Epic. Would be cool though.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
i think it has to be turned on in the firmware. Was just wondering if it had been done in GB.
i tried googling it and there seems to be a lot of people saying it has been turned on but i see no evidence of it.
When the first GB release came out for the Epic there was a lot of talk about the radio chip, but I haven't seen anything since.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
The radio chip was used with our headphones as an antenna for the signal. It wasn't practical however due to the need for the headphones. I myself don't truly think we've a radio antenna within our phones beyond that hack of sorts but I can be wrong nonetheless.
Sent from my Epic 4G
It's probably there, just disabled still. Most companies just use a combination chip that has WiFi, Bluetooth, and FM transmit/receive all in one. The other Galaxy S variants have it, the Epic Touch 4g has it, even iPhones, iPads, and iPod Touches have it.

Actually this its how most phones handle the fm antenna, by design.

nothing worth listening to on fm radio anyway lol. Plus TuneIn should take care of any radio needs, tho maybe it uses more battery than an fm receiver...
But if the chip/part of a chip is in there then it should be turned on. And if nothing less they should compile the driver and release it

If only it were that easy. It's been used in the iPod Touch from 2nd generation on, and from the original iPhone on. The iDevice community was enormous for years before Android became popular, and none of those devs could crack through and turn FM on. It would be nice if it were enabled, I've wished it for a long time, but sadly I don't think it can be enabled by anyone except the manufacturer.
My thoughts was someone didn't want to spend the money to get a license from the fcc?

cough wow! lmao! NO YOU CAN'T "SOLDER" a processor onto your evo. lmao! plus, what would be the point? if we could build our own phones. well... that would be great. It's micro for a reason. now you can put a 3d screen in for the evo. and it would work. however, then the software wouldn't work.

Well you could provided you have a very steady hand, are skilled in soldering surface mount components, and the tools to do so. In this case you couldn't because the CPU footprints are entirely different.

I don't think our phones would even acknowledge the processor if it is even swappable. Even if it could wouldn't it be hindered by the rest of the hardware?
OC your current one to 1.2 and you'll get exactly what you think you might get swapping for 110% less headache and money. 1.2 on these phones is stable and then some.

You can clearly see that, as the guy keeps the hand off the back of the phone, the wifi signal boosts up from zero to 3 bars.
In all the review as well, you can notice that as the reviewer grips the device, the wifi signal goes bad.
Damn it, again, as the Galaxy S2, wifi grip issue.
Thank you Samsung, Aloha Nexus.
There are very few phones that don't do this. To antennas used to be at the top of the device away from your hand, but ever since someone decided phones give you cancer they moved the antennas to the bottom.
I'd rather have cancer and actually get reception.
If we stopped this form over function nonsense the manufacturers could put proper antennas on phones like they used to have. Then this sort of thing wouldn't be a problem.

My biggest gripe although not huge to alot of people is the gps on the thing. It SUCKS. always has. Anyway that is my question, How is the gps on the nexus. I used to use navigation quite a bit on my phone but since the g2x sucks I can't really use it. I'm sorry if there are many posts about it but I'm on vacation and my internet time is very limited. The GPS hardware on the GN is really accurate, my complaint is with the way it handles phone calls when you are using navigation. When a call comes in the phone app jumps to the foreground, when the phone call ends the phone app stays up. To add insult to injury the screen then goes blank. I've gone back to my Garmin.

GNEX gps is lightning.
Out of the box it was quicker than any i had used before.
After installing AOKP and radio xxla2 i can lock on to 7-10 satellites (normally 8or9) in well under 10 sec's.
I believe it is a European radio, but I live in New Zealand and was recently in Thailand which locked on to 7/8 satellites in under 10 sec's
I have now installed the JB radio with the same results but a better phone signal.

The hardware is oldish and has lower specs than some phones now....
But probably the fist phone to receive 4.1 + 4.1.1
The support for the phone is fantastic and the dev's here at xda are non-stop adding features, stability and speed.
Tools, Roms, Kernels, Radios.... will be developed on this phone first.
Outta the box a good phone, the guys at xda make it a f#%*$n great phone.
I just got mine a month ago. My requirements were AMOLED and 720p screen, and the Nexus is still my choice if I were to buy one now. The only time I'll be feeling the need to upgrade again is when they release a phone with an AMOLED 720p using the RGB sub pixel layout. In the Nexus line anyways, I can't be on the update backburner now after being first in line.
processor/gpu, meh, it's a touchscreen only phone, I don't use it for high end gaming. Otherwise all the high end phones perform pretty damn similar the rest of the time, regardless whether it's quad or dual core.
Ordered it this morning. Now I'll play the waiting game.

Not ubiquitous because people like you keep saying it isn't. Buy it, try it out...you may find something interesting that will intrigue another to do the same. (and I bought the phone outright. $700 bucks w/ tax. worth every damn penny.)
so far, the only implementation I am seeing make NFC worthwhile is sBeam/filesharing, and google wallet (if it worked right now).
I will be keeping a watch on the tech, and I tend to make frivolous purchases (like the AllShare TV dongle), and perhaps I'll keep an eye on you, see if you come up with anything that sparks some ideas.
Anything useful for my personal routine (turning off ringer at work etc.) I have set up in tasker. yes, just set it up to Toggle the bluetooth - that way if it's on it will turn off and visa versa.
I have similar setups and it works like a charm.
and the tiles will work with Every phone that has NFC, so even when you get a future phone, the tiles will continue to work. I think they are the bees knees.
they become more useful once you mod the phone to work with nfc screen off (someone posted a mod but it only works from lockscreen not screen off hopefully that will be fixed soon)
I have one each on my washer and dryer. they set a "timer" that goes off and tells me when the washer and dryer are done (30 minutes for washer 70minutes for dryer)
I have one on my car to auto set my car locator position one the dev for car locator gets that working right.
I also plan to use them for geo caching. I hope geocaching.com integrates NFC functionality into their service soon is VERY ideal for that.
I also plan to use them on "bins" in storage. I store what is in the bin in the tag. tap and now I know whats inside (working on that soon)
you can use QR codes but they are a pain (have to load an app) and then wait for camera to focus AND they don't like low light. NFC don't care tap done.
also plan to put on on my Radio Transmitter for my competition rocket gliders. tap and 15minute countdown timer starts.
I am just curious if any one think there is any chance it will have the feature that the moto x does with the always on mic.
Sent from my SCH-I605 using Tapatalk 2
I dont think this feature would be nearly as useful as on a mobile phone.
I think the mic is always on because of Google Now and the ability to do voice commands at will.
Honestly I can see the benefits but if you are too lazy to pretty a button then its pretty sad. I'd rather see a dedicated voice button then always on mic. Not only for security but also because if it is always on, then it is always processing. Seems like a waste of resources 99% of the time.
Just grab a Bluetooth headset and press the button on the unit, and it will ask for a command. At least mine does.
Plus what's next? Always on video? A Google employee moving into my house? Cats and dogs, living together?

Does your TV have a remote. What are you lazy to walk to your TV?
Its an evolution of technology. Why should i have to touch it when i could NOT touch it.
I am not huge on voice controls because if i am already touching my device i would rather just do it with my finger.
If i don't have to even look at my phone to send a message or skip a song then why would I.

Even Star Trek's communicators on their shirts have to be pressed. And Star Trek knows the future better then we do. Nuff said.
Btw I'm only half serious.
Something like Google Glass, I understand IF it was paired to YOUR VOICE. But a phone...? It doesn't need to be listening every second just to grab 1 or 2 commands. Have you ever tried using Google Now in a noisy environment. I can only see my phone grabbing all sorts of random commands and doing random acts. Pass on that.
Even Google Glass reviews show it picking up commands from others and screwing things up.

I was under the impression the always on mic was powered by different hardware specs ie: the super low voltage battery when sleeping and a low power mic. Seems like this will be hard to implement for many devices without these hardware features.
I think always on mic is a moto thing, dealing with their custom made snapdragon aka "motorola x8 computing system", has a whole core dedicated to it, and another dedicated to gestures. I think current devices could do it fine, but battery life would suffer without motorolas software and hardware tweaks.
Of course I don't really know, that's just my guess. Guess we'll all find out next week

I have my new Nexus 7 in hand. I am pretty sure that is a moto only feature but i bet we see all the big players picking it up in the future.
The always on MIC is monitored by a dedicated low power core on the Moto X. N7 doesn't have that chip.
