Wonder if someone could help me when I flashed the UK generic 42 Rom from the development forum everything went perfectly well but when I connect my phone to pc companion it says I need to update to 42?
Lots of people say that happens, it's likely because it's not the firmware specifically for your device (hence it's generic). Either ignore it, or delete the app that checks for firmware updates I guess
Is there no difference in the two versions could I install it through pc companion on top of this one? I have got dooms kernel l loaded And root?
Well if you're unlocked, I'd advise against any official upgrades. If you're locked, there should be no harm in upgrading officially. Though there really should be no difference other than the bloat that comes with it (which can simply be removed with Titanium Backup)

Ye bootloader is unlocked just thought it might clear some issues up I.e when returning to home screen it takes a while for the home screen to load back up?
May be a shortage of available ram, have you removed any of the bloat?

No I'm not sure on what is safe and best to remove?
Well there's your problem. The generic .42 has LOADS of bloat, which will make your phone slower than ever. Try first off removing the chinese stuff and the pre-installed games you don't want, cuz none of those should matter whatsoever. After that, it gets trickier though and if you're not sure about something, back it up first and try freezing it before uninstalling (if you have TB pro).
I've done some testing for a good few of the core system apps so if you have a question about an app, I'll do my best to tell you if it's okay to remove and what any side-effects of removing it may be.
Thank you I have removed some games and some services that I don't want I only found one Chinese app touch keyboard? Is there any I missed? Thank you once again
Sounds like you got rid of most of the forced-bloat apps, hopefully you have more ram now. If battery drain is an issue, you may want to look into disabling or removing services cuz those can cut into the battery majorly. If you do end up going into more depth with services removal, make sure you either have a NAND backup of your device or know exactly what you're doing.
Regardless, if you're staying with the stock firmware, I recommend flashing DooMKerneL because it's incredibly fast and allows you to go into recovery mode to backup the NAND.
Oh, and you're welcome
EDIT: Good to know it helped, congrats and happy hacking to ye'
Yes I've got dooms 2ghz kernel is mighty fast and I have made backups of the apps I have uninstalled it is alot better now thanks I'm just gonna make an ext3 partition and flash a a2sd script to move my cache to sd and it will be all perfect then cheers dude!

Hello,
I got my Desire HD a few weeks ago, it was locked on Three UK and I rooted and sim unlocked it to use it in Italy where I live.
I was playing with the application manager and noticed that there are a few apps that are installed on the phone (some Three UK apps, Bejeweled and so on) that are not showing at all in the apps list. They are in the installed applications of the application manager, but I can't do anything with them as all the controls for these apps are gray (not selectable). Anyone has any idea about what is happening?
I was also thinking to flash a stock ROM to get rid of all that unusable stuff and speed up the phone a bit (the Three splash screen makes boot crazy long), but I want to be sure I can go back to this ROM, if needed. I have a backup made with ClockworkMod, is it all I need or should I save something else first?
What stock ROM would be better for me to flash?
I am currently with OS build 1.37.771.3 and Radio 12.28b.60.140eU_26.03.02.26_M
Thanks in advance for the help!
No advice at all?
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
My guess is that those apps are part of the ROM and so you will not easily be able to remove them.
You could try using something like Titanium Backup to see if that will remove them but unlikely.
"What ROM should I use" is a question that should be banned from this site. It is up to you what ROM you like the most. I, along with others can only tell you what ROM works best for them. Pick one, try it. Don't like it then choose another.

Okay, I think I explained myself the wrong way
I didn't want somebody to tell me what ROM is better as I know it really depends on personal preferences, that's the reason why there are so many different ones, right? What I meant is: what is the latest stock ROM that allows me to root the phone using Visionary+? Do I have to worry about OTA updates or can I just download and apply them?
For now I just want to have a "clean" phone, custom roms and further playing will come in the future
And, the second part of the question is if a system backup done using ClockworkMod is sufficient to get back to what I have now, if ever needed, or I do need to backup something else first.
Thanks!
I'm afraid I can't recall the latest version that will still work using Visionary+ The last time I researched it was 1.32 I believe but don't hold me to that. If you have a look at the Android Development forum the Visionary threads will tell you.
If you use CWM Recovery to do a (NAND) backup of the current ROM then that is all you will need to do. THat will back up ROM, settings, apps, messages etc. Everything.

Would I need to somehow backup Radio too? Or CWM backup saves it as well?
Recently reset EVO fixing issues but it's still unrooted 2.2 with Go Launcher EX, any reason not to allow HTC software system update 4.24.651.1 (109.22 MB) -FOTA update to 2.3 as some apps are requiring it (previously people were saying it would be harder to root in the future if needed)?
BTW, just checked internal phone storage & I'm down to 55 MB so I would have to try to make space-how much available space would you recommend for this & free in general (& if you recommend this update)?
-Thanks
You can root with unrevoked then upgrade to Gingerbread using any custom ROM, like CM7. Or, if you're interested in ICS, you can try the ROM in my signature, which has a functioning 3MP camera.

Honestly, I've never run out of internal space on my EVO, and I'm always switching ROMs & recoveries on the go; Therefore I don't exactly have any recommendations for you. However, if some of the apps you need or really want require Gingerbread, then there's really no reason to wait to upgrade, as there's always Revolutionary to root.

Good to hear that from you but before the reset I could not install anything & was getting insufficient storage errors, how much more expensive would it have been for HTC to have put in 4-16GB internal..
If I root with unrevoked instead of rev preview as I'm still 2.2, would I be able to apply to this HTC update or would that unroot me or cause conflict (or would I then be limited to compatible unofficial custom ROMs post any root)?
I moved most apps to sd & now have 145 MB available internal storage, but if I apply this 110 MB update, will that only leave me with 35 MB or would I be able to get rid of temp files etc?
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.smartandroidapps.equalizer for example requires 2.3+ & says it's currently "incompatible" (but was surprised Skype front cam works on 2.2 eventhough I had read that it required "Android OS 2.3 or higher allow apps to access the front facing camera" which had sounded odd)
To root-custom ROMs, how much space would you all want to see before proceeding as running out of space could be disastrous, no?
BTW, is anything not working in your ROM (what do you mean "has a functioning 3MP camera" as the EVO rear camera is 8MB)?
-Thanks

The rom is still being worked on so the developers haven't got the camera to perform at the 8mp level yet like it's capable of. Future updates should of that rom should bring more functionality.
If your thinking about rooting, I would go for it. Even if you update to 2.3 and use revolutionary, it is very easy and only takes 5 minutes to root. Plus that will help get more internal storage. Using apps2sd and partitioning your sdcard will help a lot as well. Just a suggestion if you were to root, I would get the MikG 3.0 rom as it's one of the most stable, and everything working properly, gingerbread roms out there.

Before Go Launcher EX I was more eager to root but I'm quite satisfied with the customization GoLEX offers. Part of me wants to root to delete the bloatware & for the free Wi-Fi tether (probably barely use it as it's a battery hog but the option would be nice for emergencies). Good to hear about fast root & fully enabled stable ROMs though..
This MikG 3.0? I like 3D interfaces but I think I'm done with Sense as I never want to see "Loading..." ever!
Still curious how much space would you all want to see before proceeding with a root-ROMs?

Doesn't matter. When you root it doesn't take any space. When you flash a custom ROM you would take the apps you want and back them up to your SD card using an app called "Titanium Backup". Then you would go into what's called "recovery" and you would wipe everything off of your phone and install new software. I would recommend Decks 1.3 if you don't want sense or MikG 3.0 if you still want sense. Then you would go back to the app titanium backup and restore the apps that you backed up.
So when you are done it will give you TONS of storage space available. Like all but about 120 on MikG and all but about 50 on Decks 1.3.
Does that explain it well enough?

What do you all think of Zedomax vids - guides- sites ?
Is unrooting ever an issue, any reason I should avoid rooting (i.e. security concerns etc)?

Unrooting shouldn't be an issue. I've done it a coupe times to take my phone into sprint (rooting voids your warranty) and all you have to do is download the correct file or an RUU, rename it to PC36IMG and place it on your sdcard. After that, boot your phone into the bootloader (take out battery, put back it, hold don volume down + power button) it will then ask you to update, select yes. Let your phone do its thing and bam your uprooted with stock rom and s-on.
I have never came across any reason not to root. It's Imo the best thing you can do for your phone. For instance, with dtapps2sd I have around 110 apps installed and have 232 MB of internal memory left. After you root, your phone will run better and you can dramatically increase battery life.

Since you are still on stock 2.2 just root using unrevoked. Then flash whatever custom rom you want. Since you actually still have the choice to use unrevoked over revolutionary, I would suggest unrevoked. It's also slightly easier to unroot unrevoked, although they are both simple to do. Also unrevoked forever!

Evervolv 2.1.0p4 is the only ICS ROM I've heard of that has a functioning camera. Right now, without the .zip that MongooseHelix is developing, the back camera (the big one) functions only at 3MP.
The only other thing not working that I care about is 4G. I used to use MIUI, so for me, that's not necessarily a problem.
EDIT TO MY LAST POST: MongooseHelix has released the .zip on Twitter, here's the link to it: https://twitter.com/#!/MongooseHelix/status/156264001242796032
Upgrading to 2.3? Holy crap you're way behind the times. Most people, including myself, are running 2.3.7....or at the very least 2.3.5. Some have even made the switch to ICS already.
Not sure what has been posted in this thread already but there is no logical reason to wait to root your phone. And there is no logical reason to still be using Froyo when GB is significantly better....not to mention its the stock system the phone ships with. That's like being stuck on XP while the rest of the world has moved on to Windows 7.

Nah for my dad I've set him up with iPhones. I'm the only one in my family who appreciates the superior freedom+value of Android, most of them have iPhones, one still on BlackBerry for work. I just upgraded my dad to iPhone 4S last month but if the Samsung Galaxy Note was available then on AT&T I probably could have sold him on its unique features..

You guys are aware that Win XP is still the dominant OS right? This remains mostly because of business markets.
I would have updated to 2.3 but was getting insufficient storage errors even from small apps until I reset it (& previously some here encouraged me not to update to 2.3 if I planned to root most easily-safely). My EVO is also a business device so there are more security concerns (rooting is not sanctioned) but was planning on rooting it after I get its work replacement (interested in the Samsung Galaxy Note but I was not a fan of the SGNexus).
Rooting really isn't a security concerns for your work phones?

Well we're not concerned with Windows' distribution within the corporate world. We're talking about the typical end user.
Now, if you're running out of storage then you're not moving your apps to your SD card. Moving them to your SD card frees up internal storage and helps keep your phone running smooth. Also, allowing thousands of SMS/MMS messages to accumulate on your phone takes up space and slows your phone down.
As far as rooting goes, its not a security issue unless you are careless with the apps you put on it. Sort of like a computer. Antivirus is a good thing to have. But your antivirus doesn't really need to do much if you use some common sense while surfing the net. With rooting you can improve battery life, tether, customize your system however you want it, and much much more. There really are no downsides to rooting.
Edit: both unrEVOked and Revolutionary are easy as hell to use. Both do an awesome job of painlessly rooting the Evo. Which one you use is just dependent on your system and radio version.

What I'm expressing is a concern about using it in a workplace environment as well..I've read in theory rooting makes your device more vulnerable but glad to hear in practice it should not be much of a concern.
I do move as much as possible to the SD card, previously I just had too many apps, some of which could not be moved at all or entirely to sdcard. How much space can I expect to gain by rooting & deleting the stock's bloatware?
Could you elaborate on "dependent on your system and radio version", or i.e. since I'm still on 2.2 unrEVOked is an option vs Rev for 2.3?
-Thanks

There are security apps for the Evo. Things like Wavesecure and the like. They search apk's for malicious code. That would be a good thing to invest in if you're concerned about possible security issues.
Also, here is the page for unrEVOked. Scroll down on the page and check the listed versions. If your Evo is running one of the baseband versions listed then you can run unrEVOked Forever. If it is running a different baseband version then you need to use Revolutionary. You can check your baseband version by holding the volume up button and the power button at the same time until the white screen appears. Your baseband version will be listed at the top of the screen.
check out deck's ICS ROM, amazing! not a daily driver though.
My girlfriend owns a Sony Erricson Xperia Arc which I believe is running either 2.3.4 or 2.3.5 Gingerbread. Anyway, it has problems with the internal memory running low, with seemingly no cause. With an abysmal 320MB, it wouldn't be surprising that it would run low because of caches or dead files in the system after a while, but after helping her clear her caches, and after several factory resets, the problem comes back after a week or two. Additionally, there is little to no content on the phone and everything that can be moved to external SD, has been.
So what I'm wanting to try is rooting, to remove some bloat and tweak things a little. But before that, I want to know:
- Is there a known fix for this problem, without root? And how common is the issue?
- What is the most common rooting method for Gingerbread Arcs? Preferably 1-click.
- How do you unlock the bootloader?
- What is/are the easiest ROMS to flash from Gingerbread?
- What recovery is best?
Sorry for all that. Links are appreciated, but any info I can get would be very helpful
There is no quick fix for this, only to have nothing running, especially in the background. To root your phone
search 'doomLord's Easy Rooting Toolkit'(it's on XDA)it's a one click method just what you asked for, this should help you get rid of system apps that are draining your Ram. Please be aware build 4.0.2.a.0.62 cannot be rooted without changing it the 'root' thread will explain this. Unlocking your bootloader is not necessary for you at the moment but once your rooted and learnt a bit more you might want to in future, read the 'sticky's' for a guide. All custom ROM's have there +/-'s and alot claim to have no lag but until you know a bit more stay with a stock ROM (Sony's own.

Thanks for the response
I had looked at Doomlord's method and found it most viable but I wanted some more opinions. I am not new to modding Android at all, but I am, however, new to the Arc. This is my girlfriend's phone too so I want to be extra careful. Also, it seems to me that you're trying to tell me that the RAM and internal storage are related? I don't think there's an issue with the RAM. The phone seems to run fine other than the fact that storage is getting bogged down somehow and all I can think is there's some stuff going on behind the scenes that only root will take care of.
As for the bootloader, you're right when you say it might not be necessary, but I'd really like to see if I can find a simple, debloated and close to stock ROM. Big changes aren't really welcome... I've been looking at CM7, as I'm a big CyanogenMod fan, but I think the switch to an AOSP look may be too big a leap in this case. I just want to increase the performance while maintaining a very stock feel.
After rooting device you should search on how to make link2sd. This will extend your 320MB to how much you want... and free space will not be a problem anymore

Lock screen problem
I tried to upgrade my xperia arc and everything runs smoothly except for my lock screen. everytime my phone goes into sleep mode, i can no longer open it no matter what button I'd press. it just stays on a blank screen. unless i take off the battery then restart it. i have to keep my phone running so as to keep it from going into sleep mode. However, when it is charging, screen locks works perfectly fine. Any suggestions on how to fix this? Please?
Have you tried a factory reset?

Hello everyone,
a quick summary of the situation: I got a wildfire S from my girlfriend, complaining for too little space for apps. I decided to go for the rooting procedure (I did it last year with my p500, but my memories are kinda foggy). The phone info are as follows:
Android 2.3.5, HTC sense 2.1, software number 2.26.401.3, baseband 47.23e.35.3038H_7.57.39.10M
So now it's rooted, with recovery, and ready to be used with link2sd. Here come my doubts:
- first of all, I did a backup using the recovery, which I understand is a nandroid back up. Does it mean I am safe and I will be able to go back to square one every time I feel like it?
- the phone itself works fine with its own stock rom. The real main issue was the lack of space for apps. Now that I also rooted it, I might even get rid of some of the HTC apps that are quite annoying. Point is: does it make sense to "clean up" the stock rom, or should I go for a cooked rom instead?
- and here's where we come to the title of the thread: I'm having a hard time finding a ROM that is a clean version of the stock one. It seems like everyone wants to go for the latest version of the OS, but doing so seems to me a trade off with stability and compatibility. Shouldn't it be easy to find a simple ROM based on 2.3.x, with everything working, but cleaned of all the crap installed by HTC (not the sense interface per se, I don't mind that, but some of the other apps seem kind of useless to me). Am I missing something?
Just to be clear, I'm not criticizing in any way, I'm only trying to understand. I feel like I am missing lots of pieces of the puzzle
So, if anyone has 5 minutes to spare and wants a big "thank you", any insight and or suggestion will be very appreciated.

Yes you can go back when you want to
There are some cooked stock roms that support init.d and some other stuff. So tweaking the rom is possible. Link2sd isn't enough for maximum storage so you can partition your SD card and try cronmod int2ext
If you like stable and reliable stock rom then I guess you can give this a try
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=37855587
This rom has all the HTC apps but you can remove it and the storage will greatly increase if you use int2ext so it doesn't really matter
There are always other roms such as cm7 and cm9 which are quite stable too

Nice, time to save it on my computer too then.

init.d allows loading scripts at boot, right? Why do you say thath Link2sd isn't enough? I've been playing with it a bit yesterday, monitoring space usage with diskusage and appears to do what it is supposed to.

Thanks, I'll give them a shot. Just out of curiosity, to remove the HTC apps I can use link2sd, right? From what I understand, deleting system apps does not give more space because the system and data partition maintain the same size. So I might as well freeze them instead of removing them. Is this the reason you suggest to use int2ext?

Besides the coolness of having the most recent OS, how would you rate the trade off between plus and minuses of going for the newer version? As in "youtube doesn't work, but the OS i sooooooo much better that I don't care" kind of thing.
Thanks a lot man!

Yeap. Because if you use link2sd you'll eventually reach a limit as I tried. And the storage will keep gettig full.
Yeap you can use link2sd I personally like to remove it because the menu looks messy and I have to scroll a lot to find my favourite apps so its your choice on whether you wanna remove it or not because int2ext increases your storage as it mounts sd-ext to.... I don't really get this stuff too but whatever
So far the latest android for the wfs is cm10. It is quite stable as YouTube, autobrightness and loads of stuff work. But the disadvantage is that its quite laggy and is a battery killer.
There is cm9 too. Its really smooth but there are bugs such as YouTube HQ videos playback, camcorder not fully supported and crap
Anytime happy to help

Hi guys. I recently purchased this phone from t mobile and so far it has been terrible. I cannot return it because I traveled to a different country and there is no T-Mobile here, so I am stuck.
Some issues I have are:
- extreme over heating while simply using the phone to browse the internet.
- battery draining extremely fast, lasting 4 hours Max (basic usage)
I am using the Android revolution rom on 5.1 lollipop and I thought it was supposed too fix these issues. Can someone please tell me how to fix these issues? I feel ripped off and wish I bought an s6 instead
I would say you have a faulty device... ?
Did you flash the new firmware aswell? Not just the rom?

I wasn't aware that you had to install the firmware as well. where can I get it?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/one-m9/development/firmware-red-t3097678
latest firmware. Should help fix issues. If not, it's possible it is device related.
Do you use greenify or any other similar app to hibernate apps when the screen is off? Do you have a lot of apps that sync automatically throughout the day? Have you removed bloatware and other apps that run in the background that you dont use by using titanium backup or romtoolbox?
Simple things like resolving any issues with the above mentioned items can help prolong battery life by a fair bit. Kernel tweaks also help to reduce overheating / cpu usage if you dont require you're phone to run at top capacity.
with overheating you need to keep in mind this is an all metal casing on the phone ... this means it will naturally absorb a lot of heat which isnt always a bad thing as it takes some of the strain away from the phones core. Obviously if its so warm it's hot to the touch then thats definately not good. But doing a full wipe / reset / re-flash etc is worth doing to get you back to basics and then if the issue remains, and you have seen to the above tweaks like using greenify / uninstalling apps you dont need / changing apps sync frequency etc, then it is probably hardward related.

I installed the android revolution rom which has no bloatware, I only have a few apps like facebook, snapchat, and twitter. The rest are never open. I have google syncing automatically. I am also currently in the process of installing the elitekernal that should help the CPU not overheat. Which kernal do you recommend? Can I use multiple kernals at one time? And yes, it eventually reaches the point where its not supposed to be that hot. I can understand if it get warm, but it really shouldn't get to the point where its hot to the touch. I really hope its not a hardware issue because then I'd have to be stuck with it.

as far as i know its a one kernel at a time kinda show.
I have only ever used the kernel that comes with the rom so far so cant recommend any others im afraid.
If after installing a different kernel you have the same issue and you have a set up like you've mentioned, it does sound like a hardware problem. With your setup it should very rarely get that hot unless you do a lot of flashing in a short space of time. My phone only ever gets hot to a point that i notice when i flash and set up a new rom, but it soon returns to normal.
good luck.

After installing the elitekernal my phone is stuck on the HTC logo.. it gets to the "optimizing apps" screen then restarts, and does it again.. bummer.

While you were still on stock, did you update the phone through Software Updates? You're likely on the originally released version of the firmware, which is probably 90% of your problems. Mismatched firmware/ROM isn't helping either.
Either return the device to stock to be able to take the OTA update, or S-Off ($25 through sunshine) and flash the latest developer edition firmware (2.8.617.4).

Bro. you really got to do some reading before you just start flashing stuff. Elite is NOT compatible with 5.1 roms.
if you are on 5.1, you HAVE to use the stock kernel . There are NO custom kernels for 5.1 yet.
Restore the boot.img from the ARHD rom. Either by restoring from the backup you made before you flashed the elite kernel, by dirty flashing ARHD, or by extracting boot.img from the ARHD zip and flashing it with fastboot.

I did not update the phones firmware. I was doing this whole thing in the first place because I thought updating to 5.1 android would update my firmware lol.
Right now I am trying to adb sideload the android revolution ROM but the phone says "Starting adb sideload feature" and gets stuck there. I have the correct drivers. Fastboot works fine, but I can only flash stock roms with fastboot. Do you have any link for the stock T-Mobile rom?

This will wipe your internal storage, so back it up first, but it's going to be the easiest way to get out of the mess you've gotten yourself in.

FYI-You need to have HTC Sync Manager installed on your computer for the RUU to run (or at least you USED to). If you get error 155 it's likely because it's not installed.
I fixed it by putting android revolution rom on my sd card then flashing it via twrp.
Now I have a simple question:
Does Lolipop 5.1 include all those fixes that HTC introduced? Or do I need to wait for the firmware for that? I am talking about the fixes like camera, overheating, battery, etc.

Firmware fixes those issues, not the rom...or at least you need the firmware for any of the fixes to actually work And using the latest ARHD with 1.32 firmware is likely making some of your issues worse.
There should be one firmware update for T-Mobile right now. But like I said, you'll have to return to stock system image to get the update. Either that or S-Off your phone which will make it possible to update to the 2.8 developer edition firmware which ARHD would run awesome on. The only downside to s-off and using developers firmware is if you use t-mobile wifi calling. For that to work, I think you need official t-mobile firmware.

Not to confuse the OP, but @jollywhitefoot what do you mean there are no custom roms for 5.1? Did you mean kernal? Another question, Is the new T-mobile update out already? I heard it comes out on the 17th.

Sorry. Thanks for bringing that to my attention. I meant to write kernel instead of rom. There are no custom KERNELS for 5.1 roms yet.
I've fixed my original post to avoid future confusion...but hopefully we'll see a custom kernel for this device in a couple of weeks.
You probably know more about T-Mobile update schedule than I do. I'm on AT&T and they're the worst about pushing updates, so I don't even bother keeping up with them.
We probably won't have any custom kernels for a few more weeks. Nothing can happen until HTC releases source, which has been coming a couple of weeks to a month after the OTAs.
