HBoot Problem "erasing cache....FAILED" - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, I've got a Problem. I flashed a new HBoot ( data ++), because a ROM required this.
Later I wanted to go back to stock HBoot, but while flashing it shows "erasing cache....failed".
I tried it many times with the same result. Also other HBoots didn't work.
The recovery showed "can't mount cache", but this message was suddenly gone...
Luckily I was on Cool AceSv4, which can handle Data++. But I rather have stock HBoot.
Hope anyone can help me.
Btw, I used the Android Flasher program for Windows.

i've always flashed hboots through fastboot and command lines, so what i suggest may not be relevant.
i went from cm7r2 to original cm7 hboot, had to flash bravo_downgrade.img from alpharev first, as cm7r2 has downgrade protection. could the current hboot you use have a similar thing? don't know if android flasher can get around it without flashing the downgrade first?
even if my advice is completely wrong, why do you need to go back to stock hboot? if your data++ ROM works with your current hboot (which i assume is optimal), then going back to stock would just waste internal memory

Yeah you probably need to flash the downgrader on Alpharev's before you can flash another hboot.

Thank you very much! It worked using the downgrade zip file.
And yes, partly you're right, but I'm a flashmaniac and there are a lot of Roms that don't support any other Hboot than the stock one.
Anyway, Problem solved.

Recovery with HBOOT 0.93, Custom Rom Doesn't boot

Dear xda members,
I'm currently stuck on a problem with my Desire.
I had to Unroot my Desire because it needed to be repaired. Now that's done and I want to get it rooted again the only problem is, I now have HBOOT 0.93.
I've tried to unroot it with UnRevoked and installed ClockWorkMod as custom recovery. and I'm not trying to get it back to HBOOT 0.80 with a PB99IMG file but that doesn't work.
I installed a Custom rom through the ClockWorkMod Recovery, Custom Rom Ginger Villain but it doesn't boot.
I don't know what to do anymore? How can I get it back to HBOOT 0.80 or install a custom rom that does boot without problems?
Hope someone has the answer, I'll keep trying in the meantime!
This has nothing to do with your hboot version... Don't know why you would think so..
On gsm desire all current hboot versions are rootable, and i take it you have got it rooted without trouble on hboot 0.93 so there is no problem.
If the phone doesn't boot a fresh install of a custom rom even after a full wipe something is wrong, but do you get an error in recovery when flashing?
Also what was repaired? If your mainboard was replaced there is a good chance you have got the new hw revision which means you will need an alternate recovery.
I thought maybe the custom rom wasn't made for the HBOOT version or wasn't supported, thought they were related.
and I think I got it rooted because there wasn't any error with Unrevokedand I got a recovery.
I didn't get any errors installing the custom rom.
My IMEI didn't change so I don't think the Mainboard is replaced?
There was a problem with the speaker.
But should I just install another rom and try if that one works?
UPDATE:
After trying 4 RUU's I've finally got one that works. so now I'm back to Stock Froyo with Sense.
Guess I have to try it again now.
I'm trying to install Ginger Villain Again but again I only get a bootloop the whole time. I don't get any errors at all in the process only bootloops...
And I now have the exact same bootloop with Oxygen rom
I now got it back to HBOOT 0.83 but still with every Rom I get bootloops. Is there anything I missed? I got it rooted, got a recovery installed and wiped everything before installing.

Did u format SD Card and partitioned it as corresponding in the ROM Thread instructions?
For example if you flashing d2ext or app2sd ROM you need a FAT32 + EXT3/4 primary partitions (FAT32 always first!).
Lol had the same problem.
You did not clear all the cache and stuff. I cant remember all the ones.
think it is
cache
wipe phone data
davlik
not sure if there is another one
basically this is your problem. I wasted so much time figuring this out because i was too lazy to wipe them
all your roms will boot until you wipe your phone properly

Did you make an extended partition ? Do you have custom hboot or stock ?
original HBOOT so I have downloaded A2SD+ version (not CM7) and I have not yet created and extended partition, going to do it now in Oxygen, hope that helps

You have to have and ext partition.
yep at least 1gb ext3/4
AND - AS USUAL - IT IS ALL IN THE FIRST POST OF INSERTCOIN THREAD
...
It's now working like a charm thanks a lot!
and may I also ask, what what software would you recommend me to flash CM7 HBOOT? Somewhere I read Android flasher but it could also be managed through recovery. Also, is it really worth flashing?
Thanks
1) you must be S-OFF to change your hboot (go to alpharev.nl)
2) you dont flash .img files through recovery, it is done through fastboot mode, and you must have ANDROID SDK set up on your pc to use adb/fastboot commands with windows cmd prompt (or try android flasher, but i strongly recommend you do it yourself, less software means less probability something will go wrong)
3) CM7 version will be faster (apps will run from NAND) and also you will get lots of space for them so this is recommended, yes (note that you cant restore a nandroid of stock hboot rom etc, after changing hboot you must flash a CM7 rom

I did it manually. http://alpharev.nl/ Android flasher works as well but by the time I would've had finished downloading the operation was done.
Yes, it is worth flashing.
S-OFF and then:
1) Nandroid backup in recovery.
2) Verify the MD5SUM of the file you downloaded against the one in the table.
3) Flash HBOOT with your phone in fastboot mode (Back+POWER) -> 'fastboot flash hboot bravo_alphaspl.img' (change into the correct filename for the HBOOT you downloaded)
4) 'fastboot reboot-bootloader'
5) 'fastboot erase cache'
6) Boot recovery, wipe everything and restore.
and one last question:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1016940
here they require 130mB for /system but
http://alpharev.nl/ offers only 145mB version for system...
could that make any trouble?
....
145 is MORE than 130 right ?
seriously

Swyped from my HTC Desire using XDA App
Hi guys, I had this problem as well.
I've done the partition okay, my problem is this:
Clean install (after wiping dalvik, cache etc) stuck on wall paper.
however when i revert to my stock nand backup and don't wipe any data and try to install, it works fine (except it messes up the people app so I can't add anymore friends).
Some knowledgable insight would be appeciated as I am loosing some good friends.

[Q] Only CM7 on my Desire, no other.. Why?

Hello everybody, i have a question for you all.. My problem: I have a s-off Desire with Alpharev CM7, CWM Recovery 4.0.0.5 and latest radio on it. I have tried to install many, MANY roms, but all, except 2, have the same problem.. After installation from the recovery, i only see the joker face from Alpharev, and nothing more. AceSMod007, RcMixHD, VillainRom and many more.. The only 2 exceptions are MIUI, that comes to its own bootscreen, but looping and no boot, and CyanogenMod, that works great. Why that? I have tried to install Hboot Sense, Hboot stock, but nothing.. Anyone should help me please? Many thanks, regards
have you partioned you sd, if not make an ext partition of 1GB with Gparted
If you are using cm7 hboot try upgrading to cm7r2 hboot from alpharev.nl as the roms mentioned require it.

Yes both with ext3 (by cmw) and ext4.. hboot r2 but others too
Are you doing a full wipe before flashing the rom? This is needed when switching roms.
Only use cm7 hboot if your using cm7 or a rom that was designed to use that hboot. Otherwise stick with stock unless specifically required by the new rom untill you got it working.
If not maybe your recovery is messed up, try a different version.
Back up your sd and use 4EXT recovery to start from strach. Create aligned partitions with this recovery. Mostly, the boot loops happen when hboot is too small for the rom or ext partition(s) is broken or not aligned. Also you can fix your partition with e2fsck.
Try InsertCoin CM7, and do everything what is said above, should be fine then

maybe that is.. I have installed alpharev stock hboot and reflashed original RUU, tomorrow i will try to root my phone again..
PS. with others Alpharev hboot, RUU won't upload, so, if you need to flash a RUU, is important that you install STOCK ALPHABOOT

[Q] Multiple Issue!!!

I would appreciate if someone can help me...
Now, think that problems started with this new Hboot's (r2)... I installed oxygen r2 hboot just to try AOSP roms.
Now I have cm7 r2 hboot but something is very wrong since I can't flash many roms I flashed before. For example I tried to flash Reflex s (I saw many people on xda with cm7r2 hboot and Reflex s CM7 rom.) It reboots over and over at the point when first sense screen shows. Same thing with Insert Coin or StarBurst ROM.
Furthermore, it shows cash error when I use android flasher for Hboot flash so I flash my Hboot's via Hboot (zip file on sd-card and update), also Amon Ra recovery reports that some E: cash (something) can't be found.
I can, however, flash AOSP roms, and some sense roms (Sense-O-Villian CM7 ROM which i use now), but flashlight stoped working at all some time ago, and yesterday camera went blank and now have no camera also (maybe they broke but I cant figure it out since I can't flash other rom's).
I started to think that problem lies in Hboot and tried to downgrade Hboot 6.93.1002. to 0.93 but don't know how because when I used android flasher with Alpharev downgrade.img file i stucked at Hboot which says Alpharev Unlocked and I dont know what next should be done...
So phone works and also doesn't work and for now I'can't find solution and asking for help... Feels like I stucked on one or two roms... I'm not to experienced but tried to follow rules and threads I found here. Sorry for bad english also!
I partitioned sd card with MiniTool Partition Wizard (FAT32 6,5 gb, EXT4 1,5 gb)
--------------------------------
Desire PVT4 AMOLED, S-Off, Alpharev Hboot 6.93.1002. (cm7r2/oxygen r2) Amon Ra Recovery (latest) ROM: Don't know anymore
okay.. to address some of your issues:
1. The Alpharev downgrader is used when you need to S-ON your Desire. Alpharev HBoots are "locked", so they cannot be overwritten when you run a RUU, so you will remain S-OFF. So when you flash the downgrader, then run the RUU, you will be S-ON as the Hboot is "unlocked" and can be overwritten.
2. Some ROM's will not work on the CM7 R2 hboot because the /system partition is too small, so you would need to flash one with a bigger partition.
3. Try this:
- Backup your current rom (nand backup)
- boot into fastboot and use fastboot commander (requires Java SDK). Go to "Misc" and wipe system, cache, userdata & boot.
- flash the stock bravo hboot with fastboot commander (in the hboot, radio & rec tab - select the hboot.img and click flash SPL) (still S-OFF, just stock partition sizes)
- reboot into recovery and flash a new ROM.
Once you've done that and everything works fine go ahead and flash different HBoots that suit your ROM needs

Thanks for reply, but I did similar thing with android flasher and flashed stock Hboot, but it didnt downgraded my Hboot to 0,93 for Bravo PVT, I stucked with Hboot 6.93.1002, same thing here with fastbootComander... I,ll try flashing old CM7 with commander now... and same thing... i get msg that I cant revert to old Hboot... wich means that I can't flash old CM7 Hboot on Hboot ver. 6.93.1002. And here somewhere is prob. cause I saw that many people have Reflex s CM7 rom on phone but with new CM7r2 Hboot partitioning which means that it's compatible with new CM7r2 and that is logical cause new CM7r2 is bigger than old . It doesn't work for me... it simply reboots all the time and I allways pay attention about rom system partition... and sd card partitions ext3/4 (rom supports etc)
Practicly every ROM I flash rebots itself constantly, for example Villain rom which is compatible with cm7r2 reboots but good thing I have it's nand backup and when I restore everything seems ok...!!!??
Anyway I'll thank you for your help.... one more thing.... i think that I should be able to downgrade somehow without flashing RUU and S-ON again?!
When using r2 hboots, you always have to flash downgrader before you can change hboot (especially when you want to flash ruu). After this you can flash any hboot you want and you will still be s-off.

Ok, tnx for info but how can I flash downgrade?
I mean, I flashed it and get to the poit where Hboot says Alpharev unlocked... what next... how to flash another hboot... With FastbootCmomander maybee? (After I flashed downgrader I flashed again r2 via hboot zip file cause I don't have old Hboot's zip files... but now I'll use FastbootCommander... i have old cm7 here somewhere...
And furthermore... I don't know what is the problem at all... cause I don't have probs with new Hboot but phone started to act weird, as I said, when I flash a new ROM, Villain for ex. it want let me to start using it due to constant reboots at startup and Villain suports CM7r2, cause I flashed it before and I also have nand backup of Villain which works when restored!!?? (now I have Villain ROM) Strange...
tnx
You flash the new hboot like any other hboot before, so with fastboot:
Code:
fastboot flash hboot <filename>
fastboot reboot-bootloader
fastboot erase cache
<filename> is only a placefolder which has to be replaced which the real filename without the "< >".
Did you flash hboot before or after flashing rom? You should always do it before flashing rom.
wait... my HBoot is 6.93.1002 and I haven't got any problems flashing hboots...... and you don't need to flash the downgrader every time!, only need it when you need S-ON when flashing a RUU.

Good to know, thanks. Was not completely sure the downgrader is needed when you do not flash a ruu. When I change hboot I would always flash the downgrader, just to be on the safe side.

Fair do's, I could never be bothered.. and plus it saves me like.. 3 seconds of my time
Well I know all that and I also flashed Hboots without downgrader. But my problem still stands. For some reason I can't flash Roms I mean I can flash but then it bootloops forever. It feels like I have some files on sistem that can't be wiped anymore.
At the other hand when I restore my old nand of same rom, it works, as long as I don't flash mods, kernels or something that changes system, then I get android.
phone force closes on every home key press.
So now I'm bit scared to turn back S-ON and RUU and I'll have to do that because of warranty issue (camera works no more) Urgh...
Sent by mesage in the bottle ...
before you flash the downgrader make sure you flash the right RUU!!! otherwise if you get the wrong one you'll be stuck with S-ON and a ill-functioning phone. It's better for you to have to do it twice than be in trouble lol
I agree... but strange thing happened, after flashing few roms I tought that camera's gone. Yesterday in 2 am suddenly camera reappears and till now works fine. So I dont know if that's hard or soft error. I think it's soft but that's another reason to reflash s-on and RUU and back again, maybe sistem clears itself.
How can I know which RUU is right for my desire? I forgot to backup when did s-off...

If your phone's branded you should've made a goldcard so you can flash the WWE RUU's, if it's not branded.. then just flash the latest WWE RUU.
If it is branded, look here, for the right RUU for your phone.. obviously download the RUU for your network.
Secondly, if you made a backup of your original stock ROM, it helps a lot since you can look at the build version and match it with the RUU (What I did )
Or instead of flashing a RUU, why don't you just get fastboot commander, it allows you to wipe system, userdata, cache, boot & recovery.. which would solve your problem.. if there is one in the first place xD

[Q] Help! Phone with recovery but no system image

I've searched this whole forum (and learned a lot) but I'm still stuck!
I upgraded from Leedroid (Froyo) to InsertCoin (Gingerbread) but the upgrade failed and now all I get is the white HTC screen.
I have:
BRAVO PVT4 S-ON
HBOOT-0.93.0001
Clockworkmod v2.5.07 (installed when I rooted with unrevoked earlier this year).
I can access HBOOT, fastboot, clockworkmod, but not the main system.
I tried restoring from Nandroid. Had MD5 errors, but once I fixed those it still doesn't work.
I've tried RUU to no avail (Got error 170).
Tried flashing Leedroid via Clockworkmod, says it's successful but it makes no difference.
So, no Nandroid, no RUU, no ability to flash new roms. What else should I try?
Your suggestions are GREATLY appreciated
go to mounts & storage, format boot, system, userdata, cache.
go to flash zip from sdcard, and choose your ROM. Should work.
Aye, it just worked then - with an older version of Leedroid.
Do newer ROMs require newer versions of Clockworkmod? Or S-off? Because I have an old clockworkmod and S-on. Those are the only things I can think of that might have broken my Gingerbread installation (and caused the Nandroid restore to fail).
S-OFF and try flashing RaDesire, it's probably the best recovery for the Desire.
Also being S-OFF makes the phone a lot easier to "fix".. e.g. if your recovery mysteriously died and so did your system then you'd have to use a RUU to return to stock, then re-root or S-OFF again.. however with this you could just flash a new recovery. Simples.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=839621
they don't require a newer recovery.. it probably didn't boot because you didn't do a full wipe that's all.
My only hesitation with S-Off is that after screwing up this ROM upgrade I was thankful of that 'safety net'. But I agree that it would make things easier to fix. As long as I can get into the bootloader
