Is anyone else experiencing this?
While my phone is charging, if I use it, it gets wicked hot and I get an error that it has throttled certain hardware functions in order to avoid overheating...
Interesting, are you overclocked? Running stock firmware or a custom rom/kernel? But to answer your question, I haven't seen this happening on my phone. I'm running Viper rom, with the cpu governor set to conservative.
Stock rom with lostkernel here. It happens every time the phone is plugged in and I'm using it.
How is viper rom? Maybe I'll try that.
Also, not overclocked at all. I don't even have setcpu installed..
Mine gets really hot too. Its gotten up to 125F before. It lowers the brightness to "prevent" overheating. Others have said they have gotten messages saying that charging has been paused due to overheating. I haven't gotten that but when its really hot and I turn it off to charge I even get a temperature warning on the charging animation. I brought mine into sprint and they are going to replace it. I just have to wait until it comes in.

Hey all, long time lurker first time poster.
Having an issue with my Epic becoming unresponsive while not in use. I originally had ACSs SRF 1.02 when the issues started on Saturday, and I had been running that without issue since it came out. After any period of not being used ranging from 30 mins to maybe 2 hours my Epic will not respond to the power button or sliding open the keyboard. No lights turn on or anything. However, it does not turn off as far as I can tell, as holding the power button as if I was going to turn it on has no effect. I have to pull the battery and restart every single time. I thought maybe the phone didn't like something with the ROM, so I wiped and updated to the latest SRF (1.2) and flashed the EC05 modem. The same issue kept happening so I tried changing to the Genocide kernel to no effect. I thought maybe the CPU was running too slow so I tried changing the operating frequencies to eliminate 100 and 200 mhz, first with setCPU and then with Voltage Control. None of these have had any effect. But I do not have any problems when the phone is charging or being used, so I think it either has something to do with those, or maybe something with the battery. Before I go out and buy a new battery I thought I'd see if anyone on here had any other suggestions. Any thoughts?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
That happened to me after I dropped mine. Worked fine while charging, but if I let the screen turn off while it was off the charger, it would "freeze" like you described. Its not the battery, cause I still have the old battery, and I've used it in my replacement. I think its a hardware problem.

The phone is on idle and not charging with nothing running on the background and it gets really hot for some reason. I exchanged my battery thinking it was the batter overheating but it still gives me the same problem. Any thoughts on what might be causing the issue? The phone is not rooted btw.
Exchange the phone. I had 7 of these and none got hot. The one I use now is stock but rooted and stays cool as the the fonz.

I don't think its an hardware issue that's causing your phone to overheat since this phone isn't known for having overheating issues. You either downloaded an app that is causing this issue or you need to either reboot your phone or do a full wipe.

i run my at 1.8 Ghz and it's not hot, it might get warm after constant use like 30 min, but it's no where near hot
i consider hot when the temp reads 50c +
I left my phone on the charger all night and when I woke up it was fully charged, but really.. really, hot. I noticed I had one notification which was a text and I know the phone stopped charging, and that shouldn't be the issue. After unplugged it, reset it, and answered the text It cooled down. I had a text just a couple of minutes ago and waited a while to answer it and noticed my phone was getting slightly warmer. Since I responded Its now at a regular temperature. Is it possible my phones overheating from pending notifications? I know that question sounds dumb but this is really bugging me out. Anyone have any advice?
I running ERA Legendary Rom with GetuSum's EI22 ICS theme 2.1 if anyone wanted to know.
Did you leave any apps on plus when you charge your phone Being "ON" it heats up more than if Off

I usually power it off.. because it also charges faster. I had no apps running and even turned off the data connection. I DID however try to install the gta San Andreas app from an "undisclosed" website.. (ehmm 4shart) which was a bad idea since of course it didn't work.. I really hope im not gonna have to end up re-installing this rom and theme, since i just installed it 3 days ago.
what are a couple things that would cause over heating? maybe that can help out.. thanks
If your phone is in use while on the charger... the display being really high the normal things.... that cause overheating like leaveing it clocked at 1500mhz

True, I think my display was on, and it usually is pretty bright. I just charged it again this time while powered off and there was no overheating (woohoo!) I've had this epic for about a year and a half now so I take care of it likes it's child haha...
I appreciate the advice
I noticed my phone got hot when charging (phone is on when I charge) with the EI22 ROMs I used.
I recently installed the stock EL30, rooted it, and installed the Shadow kernel for EL30. Now it always stays cool. Coincidence? Maybe, but I'm happy it's always cool now.
there's possibily charging overnight will make your battery broke inside (see explanation for li ion battery on google)so it easily become overheated when used normally
So there is this story... One day I woke up (the phone was connected to charger) and my Vision was on my roms bootscreen (it was a htc sense rom I think)... Took it in my hands and it was super hot. Extreme overheat. Even more than SGS2 when playing hardcore games I immediatly pulled the battery and waited some 30mins... In the next evening I was afraid to connect it to charger and sleep, but I made the risk. And nothing happened.
So at the night when it almost burned it was on 1ghz, what in my opinion is not a big overclock and couldn't cause such an overheat... No other things were done.
At the next day, switched to CM7...
So can this happen again? And why it happened?

Battery malfunction ? i.e. the battery itself is dying ?
Sent from my Desire Z running CM7.
Was your phone turned off/just turning on when you went to sleep or did it reboot over night?
Anyways I think, since it obviously isn't a reoccurring problem, it was probably just an app or some system service which was caught in some kind of loop or other error which leads to a very high usage of cpu cycles and therefore your phone heats up a lot. Finally Android reboots either due to a hardware trigger caused by the rising temperature or because the OS crashed.
Once the phone rebooted, android probably tried to finish whatever it was up to and got caught in a loop once again which stalled the boot up process.
I guess that this can happen again, though I don't think that this is anything you need to be concerned about, unless it becomes a frequently reoccurring problem.
Overclock should have nothing to do with it. I don't think OC to 1 GHz involves any overvolt. Plus, unless you have the minimum clock freq set to 1 GHz, it was likely clocked itself down much lower than 1 GHz while screen off and idle.
Battery may be faulty, or some runaway process, as previously suggested.
i've heard that when the phone gets hot it stops charging... i may be wrong though...
try putting it back to 800 on CM ROMS... they're lite weight... and u have heat issues... so this could be good for you
I have had this happen a few times all due to OCing. Something in the system gets stuck in a loop and it will heat up FAST. I too have pulled the bat and cooled it down then put it back with no problems. I was always OCing in the range of 1.8 or 1.9 when this happened though. I would check your radio version too. The .19 radio gave me a lot of problems. I currently run the .30 radio on my G2.
P.s. the phone has a hardware temp shut off. So if it gets too hot it will shut off. Not something you want to have happen a lot though.

Ok so I have a few questions about my Galaxy s3 i747. Ok so first off I am rooted but I'm not flashing any roms, never really felt a need to. I only rooted so I could use an ext sd card for gameloft games and also the wifi tethering.
So the first problem I am encountering is my phone will just start to die. Like I will literally just watch my battery plummet. How can I stop this?
I will wake up after charging my phone fully the night before and the battery will be at around 5%, if not dead.
This morning I noticed that I left my phone on the charger because I fell asleep and the battery was at 36% and it was extremely hot! 119.7 degrees according to the battery indicator on the phone.
Also I was using setCPU and it won't let me set my cpu to over 1026mhz anymore.
Is there anything I can do to fix any of these problems?
Thanks, TheMightyBean
p.s All these problems occurred even before root.
Defective unit or rooting did something. Search how to return to stock, reroot and go from there.
