So here is the thing, so the screen size of the Nexus will be 4.6", is the actual usable part of the screen larger then our device?
What I mean, doesn't the buttons on the screen have to remain there all the time so in reality that part of the screen is not really usable for anything else. So it looks like you are not really getting any extra screen real estate you can use by having the buttons incorporated into the screen instead of the device.
Anyone see this any other way or am I missing something? If this is the case, it will really suck for smaller screens......
You are correct. From what I'm seeing the actual viewing screen is 4.3 inches do we imwill have a bigger screen in the end.

Yea, you are missing the fact that the menu buttons can be programmed to auto hide for most applications as the developer sees fit. I doubt you will see the menu buttons while playing games and watching videos, movies, etc.

Off topic, kinda, I am dubious about placing the buttons onscreen. I haven't played with honeycomb much but with every iteration of android I've owned the screen occasionally freezes leaving only the capacitive buttons operative. If and when the screen freezes in ics will the onscreen buttons remain inoperable? If so, I'm a little glad I got one of the last phones with separate buttons.

I've got a Nook Color...no hardware buttons (aside from power and volume) except home. So we get on-screen ones.
In situations like you describe they still work just fine. Those capacitive buttons are just a piece of the screen with no, well, screen under it. Same digitizer. I wouldn't worry about it.
The most recent leaked specs are pretty underwhelming, pretty much only the HD screen is a real upgrade and even then it's going to be curved (wtf) and smaller, harder to read text. The Prime is more of a sidegrade than anything, and not a very appealing one at that. I'm sticking with my galaxy II

Exactly
Samsung is going to make the galaxy for google and its users will benefit from having updates asap and vanilla android; however the galaxy S series is samsung's flagship. The galaxy S3 will be the next real upgrade from our devices.

On my galaxy tab 10.1 it was the same concept with using on screen keys only and they never once dissapeared. There are threads and people rooting just to try and get the buttons to move off screen during video playback and such. Idk. We will sure find out wont we? But ya I think for the most part the buttons will always be on the screen 90% of the time
I've been looking at galaxy nexus videos for the last couple of days and the software key area does not look capable of using that area for anything but those keys. The screen looks like it ends before the keys.

I agree as well. This phone feels like a mini tablet. If the screen resolution is better, hopefully they put a bigger battery to balance it out. It would make a difference right? Higher Res equals more battery use? Anyhow I love this phone. It is not going anywhere. I can't find anything (other than LOS) which I never get on pulled stock kernel. Wifi range is better than OG Epic, battery great, Bluetooth connects properly, Everything works and works well for me

There is actual screen underneath those buttons. Idk if you've seen any of the demos but when doing thing like playing games or watching media those buttons disappear completely leaving you with a 4.65 inch hd screen. Another plus point is that they'll be context sensitive. So the dev of a given app can change them to fit your needs at any given time. I may be striking out from the crowd here but I'm actually totally in favor of then on screen keys. One of the most attractive features of the gnex in my opinion is the bezel to bezel screen.
Bezel to Bezel screen would be t*ts
depends what u mean besides the capacitive buttons the nexus still has more room density wise

I don't mean to sound like a ****, but, I'm not sure what your point is. I agree with you 100%. My only point was that on-screen buttons were no different than our current setup, as they are digitizer driven just the same (meaning that our buttons are the same on on-screen buttons except there is no screen underneath them and that their reliability in 'locked up' circumstances is not to be a concern.)
Also, addressing OP's main question, if you do the math....given the resolution and subpixel division between both phones we have, roughly, the identical panel but with a slightly different sub-pixel division. We have an absolutely identical sub-pixel amount...sure, they have less sub-pixels and we have more, but, they have more resolution and we have less. It's the same panel configured with a slightly different sub-pixel arrangement...so...for all intents and purposes consider our screen size identical. 0.10" is nothing to worry about.

I kinda agree, the phone itself isn't all that. I felt the same way with the nexus s also.
The other cool thing is that the buttons rotate to the bottom of the screen when you flip between portrait and landscape

I second that. I'm not too fond of the 16:9 aspect ratio on the GN compared to the screen ratio on our device. I think we have the superior hardware.

Of course the new Galaxy Nexus has a better screen. It will look the same size as ours but will be a lot higher resolution. The screen is better on the Nexus and it is the one thing, other than ICS, I wish the SGS2 had. The Nexus and SGS2 have almost exactly the same physical footprint so it doesn't feel different than ours but you get more screen real estate when you need it (games, movies, internet, etc.). The people complaining about the 16x9 are off because the only time it seems like that is when you are in a movie or game and then 16x9 is great because it's like an HDTV. The area the SGS2 excels are the Camera and the processor. I don't know how anyone on here can argue that our older, lower res screen is in any way better than the new 720p Galaxy Nexus.
Hi fox's any one have this spec becauce i'm now on infuse 4g and im really interest to upgrade my phone but not compromice the screen size (for the aspects ratios the infuse is greathe) even 4.65

Hi all.
Just a quick video comparing the two for anyone trying to decide between the two. Or go from the GNex to the One X. Sorry for the shameful self promotion but there is no point making videos if nobody us going to watch them
While both are 720p, there shouldn't be any contest between the Super LCD 2 and PenTile AMOLED.

i owned a gnex while my daily was a gs2. after one day of use i was certain the gs2 had a more superior screen in all respects except for the resolution. e.g. under very brightness colors were inconsistent or dimmer on the gnex. viewing angles weren't that great neither.
so when i got a hold of my current HOX, it blew the gs2 out of the water. i was mesmerized by the magic of the one x's display. it sticks to the surface and even feels like it pops out. viewing angles make the screen look unreal like a picture painted on the glass. it defies belief that it isn't a dummy model handset with a still picture.
i don't know what's responsible for that and it might actually be how HTC has the curved stretched edges by the bezel. all i know is that i believe it's the first device of this display standard. images and wallpapers just hypnotise you... the widgets and icons look so fine.
some said 'this is a bit like what's available on apples retina display'. it is only true to certain degrees only. for example, if you look at the retina display, you can still see a fine black line or border separating the wallpaper from the bezel of the phone producing an effect that there is still a layer of glass above the actual image/wallpaper. this effect is practically non existent on the HOX. besides, the retina display simply doesn't compare even to that of the s2 on one ground alone and that is the size of the screen. it is just too small. 5" plus is too big... 4" less is too small. just my opinion.
i was wowed by the gnex beside my gs2 at first purely on the high res and sharpness in detail. but the color reproduction and the viewing angles just put me off.
gosh, i still have the hots for the galaxy nexus and wouldn't regret doing a trade for my HOX.

Hi,
Firstly, this is not to start any debate about which aspect ratio is better, but is more a question for those who own (or have used) the first generation Galaxy Note.
I'm really looking forward to getting the Note II (upgrade from my current i9000) and my first concern upon hearing of the new aspect ratio (16:9) is how well it works well with the S-Pen for writing. Especially since writing in English (and many others) is from left-to-right, and not vertical. So reducing the width of the device means even less space to write.
So for note users, from your experience with the 16:10 screen, do you think the new 16:9 screen is a concern for writing with the S-Pen?
Any thoughts on this would be appreciated

I could be wrong, but I believe they increased the size of the screen and reduced the size of the bezel, so it would be roughly the same size.

I have the Note (16:10) @ 5.3" and also the GS3 (16:9) @ 4.8". The Note's screen is substantially larger in width and height. Viewing web pages and reading, the Note is definitely easier. But while viewing movies or video clips, the 16:10 on the Note actually isn't that much bigger than the GS3. The "black bars" from the aspect ratio actually wastes the view space on the screen. So with a larger screen 5.55" on the Note 2 you will definitely have a better experience watching videos. And as for using the S pen to write with, you shouldn't worry about that at all. If you ever compared the dimensions between the Note and Note 2, the size is very negligible. My GS3 is my daily driver and I've handed the Note to my dad because the camera performance is much faster on the GS3. But once the Note 2 is out, I will be back on it.
Very minimal difference. The biggest changes are: Note 2 is narrower by close to 3mm, but taller by 4.25mm. I'll take the skinner taller chick any day
Note vs Note 2 Dimension
NOTE 1: 146.85 (H) x 82.95 (W) x 9.65 mm (D), 178g
NOTE 2: 151.10 (H) x 80.50 (W) x 9.40 mm (D), 182.5g

I have a similar concern, but it doesn't relate to viewing movies or video clips. My question is more around keyboard input for texting, emails, etc. My question is more around how much LESS WIDE is the screen of the Note II, versus that of the Note I. For my aging eyes, the wider the virtual keyboard in portrait mode, the better. So, I'm not at all concerned with the outer dimensions of the Note I and II -- I'm more interested in how much the usable screen's width decreases from the Note I to the Note II. Anybody got any info in this area? Thanks in advance for your replies.
Good comparison site for sizes of both displays
http://www.displaywars.com/5,5-inch-16x9-vs-5,3-inch-16x10
Portrait width is .1" narrower but .3" taller on the Note II. They also list diagonal sizes at the various aspect ratios.

If you check the specs of the width, it is only 3mm wider, but yet the Note2 practically is all screen from bezel to bezel. You basically have an additional 6.28mm of diagonal screen space to work with. Again, I don't think you need to worry about the width and how it will effect your typing. It is negligible. 4.79 inches vs. 4.49 inches
Plus the latest keyboards from swype uses all of the width space and is very easy to type with even with the smaller GS3 screen.
Because the screen is taller, the change in physical width of the screen is very small, around 2.5mm.
There is a loss of 80 pixels from the sides but the remaining pixels are larger than on the note 1 to make up for the loss of the 80.
So physically there is just almost the same amount of room for the pen to move as on the note 1. Also I expect the keyboard buttons to be the same size, just maybe the resolution of the text will be less.
Sorry to resurrect an old discussion, but just wanted to chip in!
I had the Note 1 for 11 months and Note 2 LTE for 3 weeks and of course I'm loving it!
Just to point out, the results from that displaywars website are "rotated". i.e. width should be height and vice versa
It shows that the Note 2 is 0.3 inches taller and 0.11 inches thinner.
I must say I notice the "loss" of width in screen real estate. Although the Note 2 feels better in the hand. It could just be I'm used to the original Note.
They say how films are better on the Note 2 because of the 16:9 ratio but in my experience most modern films are being presented in the 2.39:1 ratio so I still get the black bars on the top and bottom. EDIT: However, TV shows are in 16:9 so are full screen.
Just my two cents!
Been wondering about this myself. I have a note 1.
Would the square inch space / size of the screen be higher on the 1? I did read ½ of the thread.

sure most movies are 2.4:1, but you also need to factor in that it means that on the note 1, you lose even more rows of pixels compared to the note 2, so movies will still be better on the note 2 because the black bars will be narrower.
and i find my note 2 to be sharper than my note 1. even though its missing 80 rows of pixels, it ends up being sharper because it has a full subpixel matrix, which means that despite having 80 rows of pixels less, it still ends up with 30% more subpixels, which makes it better overall in my books.
all blurry
I have a problem my galaxy note 2, I think the loss of resolution to 1280x720 left the icons and letters all blurry, while the galaxy note 1 to define the icons and letters were much better. this is a hardware issue or software?
I have a note 2 3g and i love it,when i today took a benchmark, the sgs 3 was a bit faster at 3d, other then that the note 2 was faster, not by much but faster then my sgs 3.
What i noticed was the sgs 3 has a sharper screen and i thought wtf (surprised mee) the note 2 has a non pentile screen, rgb screen (that's surpose to be superior to a pentile screen).
What's you experience about the screens, sgs 3 vs sgs note 2, pentile vs rgb? (is the sgs 3 screen sharper then a note 2?)
I use a copter screenproctor on both my sgs 3 and note 2, i noticed a lot of very tiny red dots between the screen and the screen protection on my note 2 (started using my phone before the 12 hours they say i have to wait, before using my phone), most noticible on a bright bagground as if theres still some microscopic leftovers of the aplication fluid, that i used when i applied the screen protection (can't remember if i had the problem with my htc legend, sgs 1 and sgs 2 where i used an invisible shield to protect my screen for scratches)
Is there any way i can make those tiny red dots go away?
The screen on the Note II has a slightly lower PPI compared to the S III (267 vs. 306, respectively) which is why it may look slightly less sharp, however the RGB matrix on the Note II should make things look clearer overall.
The red dots that your seeing sound like a side effect of your screen protector in my opinion, with those kind of screen protectors it can take up to a week for the application fluid to completely dry and for any "micro" air bubbles to work their way out.
For more information on the differences between the Note II and S III's displays and the PenTile vs. RGB matrices, see this article: http://www.androidauthority.com/galaxy-note-2-vs-galaxy-s3-display-comparison-rgb-pentile-121182/
