Hy
i just bought a htc desire z and i was thinking of rooting it.
Before i had a rooted HTC tattoo but i see that there are a lot of differences so i have a couple off questions:
* Can i use every tutorial of the G2 also? there isn't a difference with the Desire?
* I want to use other ROM's so i think i needed an perm root, wright?
* If so why should people won't to temp root?
* i see that you can root your phone with different options, what is the best way?
i found a tutorial here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1055581
and an other here (thats seams easier)
http://theunlockr.com/2010/11/15/universal-android-rooting-method-visionary-method/
thanks in advance
the official XDA guide is here, and it works great on G2 and Desire Z, I would go with it rather than just any old guide. I have used the one at this wiki and I would not chance bricking my phone with any other guide.
PS - use copy and paste for even more safety, as opposed to making a possible typing error that could screw something up!
Yes you need to perma root to flash custom rom
Term root will disappear if you reboot the phone, then you need to do it again

Helo All,
So I have a locked Desire Z from Bell, and I am with Bell. I dont really feel a need to change the Rom on my phone as I have no issues with it and am pretty happy with it.
My main thing that I would like to do though is remove the bloatware that Bell installed. Such as demos to games I care nothing about and also seem to find themself running in my Advanced Task Manager despite me never using them.
So I know that I can root the phone and uninstall them which is my main goal, I have been looking around and see multiple methods for rooting, with S-Off and such, so I was looking to see I truely need to go about it that way or should I just obtain root leave S-On and all that other jazz and just uninstall them.
So I welcome suggestions on how I can go about rooting my phone for my needs.
Thanks
I put together this guide that I pieced from this forum. Tried to make it really user friendly. I have the Bell Desire Z too.

Nice guide, Will this work for European DZ also?
There are two methods of rooting. The first uses an app called Visionary to root, and the second uses a program called rage. There are guides on how to use both of these on this forum.
I recommend you look at this guide - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=857390
That guide shows you how to root with Visionary (though you can substitute the rage method), and then to get S-OFF with gfree. The relatively "new" method of using gfree is very safe to use, and getting S-OFF will open up a lot more options to you than just root, e.g. the ability to flash custom recovery (so you can do a Nandroid backup of your phone) and to flash custom ROMs.
It's possible to undo all of this stuff should you ever need to do a warranty return. Although if you're going to flash a custom ROM, make sure you either have an RUU/ROM image for your stock ROM, or a Nandroid backup of your stock ROM to restore (because there aren't RUUs/ROM images available yet for all stock ROMs).
how is root desire z with android 2.3.3?
(with apk program is better because i am amature!)
there's plenty of tutorials over at the android developement section, and the wiki, for rooting your phone... and try to do it the hard way, even if you didn't understand what you are actually doing (like i was )
do it the hard way, because the easy way (a rooting app to easily one click root your phone) has a high risk of bricking your phone (you try to turn it on... nothing appears)...
your choice

thanks.
because what one click root is a high risk?
Visionary has a high brick rate.
SuperOneClick may tell you its rooted, but it won't be.
Others won't work at all I think.
Just follow the wiki guide, its not too difficult and works.

Wiki guide all the way. Make sure you follow every step. It works a charm. It was how I did mine
Hey, did you manage to root your Desire Z 2.3.3? I read thus and got quite scared: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1169538
I rooted my last HTC Magic with kind of one click method and it worked though.

Read up on ADB Shell and the works. Then you can read the numerous guides on how-to root.
The information you'll learn is invaluable.

I'm new too and I managed finally to downgrade, root and install custom root. I followed the first post here written by Kueber. Easy root soft is never good way to go. First learn some basics of ADB here and make sure you install oll the JDK, SDK and Desire Z drivers so you can control your phone from your computer. Then use this root and downgrade instructions. Then install from Market ROM Manager and download whatever ROM you wish and installing that is already very easy. The question is what ROM to use.
Of course don't forget to backup everything before you start messing with your phone.
I got Virtuous v2.0.0 (Android version 2.3.3 & HTC Sense 2.1) so I don't feel much upgrade at the moment except I'm rooted and can use some soft that works only with rooted phone (ClockSync & Screenshot).
If you find better one that suits for DesireZ and doesn't make it slow then let me know
It is a shame to say that I still use Android 2.2 with Kernel 2.6.32.21, Taiwan version since I bought the phone a year ago.
(Not until recently, I have decided to move on to Gingerbread because
I wanna use the the latest features in the NDK to write some C++ programs for Android.)
Without getting into trouble during/after rooting,
I tried an official OTA upgrade but it doesn't work.
I tried to ask HTC but they said they still don't have any official upgrade for my phone.
I am a newbie here in this forum,
Could anybody please kindly offer your help please?
It will be GREATLY APPRECIATED! I wanna make my App!!!

If there is no official Gingerbread for your phone (which seems odd ?) then you can flash a different official GB ROM onto your phone. But normally your phone isn't going to let you do this, because it will fail the signature checks.
What you need to do is to de-brand your phone so that it doesn't do these checks any more. I will see if I can dig out a link to a guide and edit it into my post, unless someone else beats me to it.

Steviewevie,
Thank you for your help in advance!
I can't copy and paste the link right now, but use the Search function in the Android Dev forum to find the thread called "Debranding Bell Desire Z" (it doesn't only apply to Bell phones).

Thank you for the help!
I have found that thread!
BTW, after a quick look of the thread, it seems that S-off is recommended...
Do I need to get "root" in order to do so?
Should I do that to prevent future trouble?
Always recomend rooting phones right away, if you have a custom recovery and an enginering bootloader you can save tons of headaches in the future when problems arise (as they often do) this of course is outside the fact that a rooted phone is a happy phone and certainly not an apple

As demkantor said, getting S-OFF is a lot better because it gives you a lot more options for the future, even if you don't use those options straight away.
IMHO the only reason to use the goldcard method and not full S-OFF is if you are really worried about voiding your warranty or the S-OFF process yourself. But there's no need to worry really, since (a) you can easily reverse the process if you need to, and (b) lots of people here can help you through getting S-OFF (the XDA Wiki explains it very well, though it can look daunting at first).

+1 to the notion of just rooting the phone. Especially since if are software developer, I would think that you would want full control over your device. And if you have these type of skill, rooting will be easy.
As mentioned, root, S-Off etc. can be removed for warranty purposes, if that is the concern.
The Wiki method is generally accepted as the safest:

demkantor and all,
Thanks!!! ok, I am least I will go for S-OFF!
But, I need to be able to fully recover my OS and Apps,
I need to do some research on stock recovery and/or custom recovery...
Well, I think there is an official update to Gingerbread thou.. But I think dont think that version is in English as it is a Hongkong version.
ok i need a little help im new to HTC coming from samsung i have knowledge of rooting and flashing and such but i seem to be going in circles trying to obtain root. I am currently running 2.2 Froyo, I have read quite a bit on here but not sure of best method to use any input would be appreciated.
I will presume that you own a G2 / Desire Z. Go to my minus.com profile(link is in my signature) and download the pdf corresponding to your phone and the skip the downgrading part of the guide and jump to rooting. Just follow it and you'll be rooted and s-off.

successful now onto flashing thanks
Hi.
Much time passed when I unlocked my phone so I don't really remember how to do this again in my friend's Desire Z. I was looking for a tutorial but there is a problem. In this topic - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1055581 - goldcard generator link is dead and I don't want to begin procedure of unlocking until I make sure all the needed files can be downloaded. Can you provide me a method to make that Desire Z being able to use custom ROM's? Android version is 2.2.
Just go to the xda wiki, cyanogen wiki, or straw metals PDF guide, all of which will pop up in simple Google searches. This ois the only method you should use to root this phone. And the downgrade process may not be necessary if you are on 2.2 but depending on radio you might still need to, but being it only takes moments to do it can't hurt

OH BINGO! Cyanogenmod Wiki, I unlocked my phone from that site - I just couldn't remember. Unlocked perfectly, thank you.
