Hi, I am swapping my phone out for a replacement but haven't rooted my slide since june and since then there have been a bunch of methods developed. I originally used eugenes with the eng build. Gonna root my new one and do a nandroid back to cm 6 but I have to root first. Is eng still necessary? I remember doing the boot loop unplug replug blah blah but since june what's the fastest simplest way to root? Is eng still required? Or is it just still the best method? I'm a flashing addict btw. Changes roms frequently. Thanks for your input. Maybe the mods can make one thread with all rooting methods compared for people without hours to search and read all of them scattered around the forum

That's not a bad idea, we have a ROM Bible why not ask the Mods to make a ROOT Bible and sticky it in the forum.

Because all the methods, other than nbetcher's, are either outdated or don't work.

Personally I don't recommend any other root guide than nbetcher's...BUT let me ask you this: do other methods not work because they are outdated or are they just outdated methods that still work?
The loop method worked before the OTA update.
The unlockr method never worked afaik.
The temproot method does not, and never has, worked.

Thanks!!!
Thanks everybody for your responses, honestly I'm lazy and would have just done the same as i did before I can honestly say that you guys have saved me a world of aggravation!! My wife too cause she hears all my *****ing, lol. nbetchers method seems so drawn out. I completely forgot about the last OTA update as I have been running eugene's roms since june. just recently switched to a cm nightly. my new phone will be here on wednesday so I'll be sure to post progress but i'll start with nbetchers method (much props btw, from the look of it it seemed difficult to accomplish!). Lets keep the slide alive!! @ least till the christmas time phones are cheap and the summer releases are here...lol
*EDIT* After rereading nbetchers method it actually looks really straightforward. Thanks NB!!

I disagree with nbethers being "drawn out". Hell, the original method was a PITA since you had to first coyp some files over, then get adb loop to work, then copy more over at a precise time etc etc...
Ya I pretty much retracted that statement. It seems really easy compare to the old original rooting method. Much props to the dev!!! Thanks for the first response too fermonky for pointing me in the right direction

Just wondering if it works on the slide.

^I used that to root my phone and it worked fine. I did this method cause i needed a visual of how to do it cause im a noob.
Then i came here and updated with this.
(for some reason it wont let me post link so look up - #TeamFenix v2.0 - Updated 9/14 - WiFi issue resolved!
and do that update
I did a nandroid backup for my phone the updated with that. and now im running froyo 2.2 on my phone and loving it. Although my market place seems diffrent. Like it came with a diffrent market than the sense. but overall its great. No problems with it.
Hope it helps.
Hey all,
I've got an ego, have had it since July and love it. I finally have come to terms that I really should root it and get a cleaner, faster running ROM on it. My question is, what is the easiest, simplest way to get the level of root necessary to install custom roms? I've searched several sites and they all seem to be fragmented, does someone know of some step by step guide, or does anyone have any history or experience with simple root? I've heard of unrevoked, but some mixed reviews. I guess I just haven't had the guts to jump in and do it, till now, I want a cleaner running phone! Any help is appreciated.
Thanks,
Devin

I don't want to sound like a jerk, but if following the very clear and succinct step-by-step instructions worries you too much, I'd question if you should be rooting your phone to begin with. You can mess up a lot on a rooted phone if you don't know what you're doing.

you got a replacement for your phone because you couldn't take the time to revert on your own and then apply the update? shame on you.
@OP
root is very easy, if you can read and follow directions you will be fine, but what the others say is true, if you are worried then you should either learn up on your sdk tools or not root your phone because i promise you will get a bootloop one day and not know what to do and you will ask us if it is broken and how to fix it(unless you have been doing your reading), and most likely if we tell you how to fix it then you are going to need adb anyways
rooting is really easy if you use the rage method.

Thanks for being a ****, but your anti failed, I upped my ADB to spite you. 3 phones rooted, no problems yet.
It's just my opinion, but I don't think the one-click root method is great for the G2. Unlike the Vibrant there is a step that can brick your phone, and you are best doing that one by hand. Plus, learning ADB will make your life sooooo much easier when you actually do root the phone.
Rooting is just the first step, then you have to do cool stuff to it. Then you need to screw it up, and then you need to fix it. All of that is made much easier or requires ADB.

Haha, so true.
and I'm new to this android stuff, completely. So I was wondering what kinda mods can I do to this phone and what should I do to it.
You should root it and apply a bunch of roms in the development section to see which one you like. Almost all of the roms have none of the bloatware that your provider demands your phone have on it, and some of them have custom looks to fit your aesthetic needs. More importantly, most of the roms will be easier on the battery of your phone, so you don't have to plug it in every 4 hours.
A good question is are you use to the process of modifying your phone?

nope. I've never modified a phone before. Which is why I'm so interested in doing so now since I have a good phone lol. How do I "root" my phone n all that..
You're right. You do have a kick ass phone and you should take full control of it and do what you like to it, since you bought it.
The method I used to root my phone is an older method, which is posted at the top of this forum: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=837315
Watch it SEVERAL times before trying. People say their root didn't complete, but let me tell you, the battery pull is oh so necessary.
After that, go into the development section to start flashing roms. Each rom comes with instructions to flash, but they're basically all the same.
My suggestion would be to wait until you have familiarized yourself with this forum and Read until you understand what you are doing and why you are doing it. HERES A GOOD PLACE TO START. Its really easy to mess up your "good" phone doing stuff to it that you don't fully understand.
While the root method suggested above by enserio has worked and I my self used Visionary to root (not with this video though), it has caused so many bricked bootloops I can even guess a number, by far the most risky way to root. It is the least technical way, but with the most dangers. Hope you can afford to buy a new phone because your taking a big gamble rooting this way.
The method I recommend and anyone who has been in this forum long enough to know better would be HERE XDA WIKI, it uses Rage to temp root then Gfree to permroot. This is the safest way to root your phone, even if you mess up more than likely your phone will survive. This requires some technical knowledge but you can gain this by reading and searching and looking for tutorial videos on how to use ADB. Plus the skills learned would be indispensable.

if you screw up, it will.
also, rooting and installing custom roms does not at all mean better battery life.
it varies greatly depending upon what you use the phone for and how often you use it.
I, in fact, have LOST a lot of battery life since rooting, because I have been using it more than I would if I hadn't rooted/installed custom roms.
my suggestion:
play with the phone as it came from the factory, read around here and see if there is any functionality you could gain from modding/rooting/custom roms, and go from there.
*sigh*

Most of the bricks came from the Visionary method; as stated above, the best/safest means to root is in the wiki, that's the method the guys/gals who found the exploit created.

That's not to say that there aren't other ways to brick your phone. Someone messing around in things they don't understand can easily turn your G2 into a paperweight. Its always just a safe rule to research first
Grats on the phone.
I lurked on here and read for a few weeks to make sure I had a full understanding before attempting anything.
Since doing lots based off of the dev forums I've been extremely happy. Just be careful and do your due diligence and you should be fine as long as your halfway technically inclined.

oddly he's had over 300 posts and is a "senior member" :S in response to OP... I think there might be but it is highly recommended that you do NOT use it as it is known to have a high risk of bricking your phone. Just use the complex method, it isn't actually THAT hard, i did it in an after-noon with absolutely no prior experience.
If you don't feel comfortable doing it yourself you can pm me and I can point you to some great guys that will set up a remote session and root it for you. They can also change hboot, install roms or what ever you want. The vision is a bloody biach to root if you can't use adb. Anyway figured I would put that out there rather than bash you senseless. Lol. (All in good spirits)

Oh **** why is bricking the phone i would assume because of htc g2 being vanilla android like original Motorola droid. I thought it wouldnt be easy to get bricked.
I got galaxy s vibrant brick for stupid reason delete some important files.
But wow I guess im going to do Hard method root, which i dislike but thanks for head up.

i was thinking the same idea, thinking about paying someone that can root phone . But, i didn't want my phone getting messed up by them either. I have money and i'm think about it . But if their going to root my phone; it will just be to get superuser the rest I do it on my own.
1-click root solutions don't work on the G2 due to the fact the NAND memory chip is write protected purposely by HTC. Older HTC phones don't have this protection, and newer HTC devices have even more protections, such as locked bootloaders. Newer Moto phones have locked bootloaders also. I don't really follow Moto much, but I'm guessing like HTC, older Moto phones were not as protected. Samsung and LG, on the other hand typically have very little protection against root, and very easily rooted. That is why 1-click root solutions exist for those phones.
HTC's claim is that they are protecting themselves from customers that root the phone, then damage the phone in the process of installing custom ROMs (or other mods), then try to return the phones under warranty. Sounds a little BS to me, but I guess only they know how many people try to send in phones for warranty, which they damaged by trying to mod it.
Is it the Wiki root method you have been looking at? http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=HTC_Vision#Rooting_the_Vision_.28G2.2FDZ.29_and_DHD
I think most here agree, this is the best/safest root method. Its really not that hard. It seems long, but lots of the steps are just downloading a bunch of files, and the steps are spelled out in great detail (which is a good thing - makes for a long guide, but also prevents you from getting confused). Other than that, you just type a bunch of commands into ADB. And if you haven't used ADB (Android Debug Bridge), its handy to know how to use it, anyway.
yeah your right phone like htc mytouch 3g,g1,htc hero, droid eris, droid incredible and nexus one dont have that problem to do 1 click root .
Same with Motorola with original droid, but cliq is having same issue like the new phones. It isn't an old factor it custom user interface that manufacture, put on their phone that prevent from 1 click root access.
Samsung galaxy s another phone that you can 1 click root.
Im just going to pay someone to root my phone to solve my problems. Then i flash by myself Clockwork mod recovery and flash the rom i like and the kernals.
