Just got my desire friday. It's awesome! But the lags are killing me! I'd like JIT, SetCPU, power managment, cool themes and better music player, that's all! It should be easy, just to hack android to get access to ROOT...
But seriously, I don't want to lose any settings and apps I've set-up. Also the process is complicated, and there is nothing like "one click ROOT access". Although I already have Android SDK(for testing purposes), I am maybe just a bit lazy
So what do you think, to root or not to root.
had to bump so fast!? is here anyone reading this?!
Desire forums seem kinda dead today. Everyone's probably got the World Cup fever lol
I personally would say no, but that's my opinion - I wouldn't wanna risk bricking my new device, I should also say though that I have no previous Android experience, so I don't know about you. So I'm waiting, hopefully an official release isn't too far off, and if my carrier doesn't release it quick, I will be goldcarding
I would go ahead and do it, even though the above poster stated that there is a strong possibility of bricking your device, this is true, but there have been recent developments made for this kind of issue - there are now complete guides in the ROM dev section detailing how to unbrick your device, or even run recovery from your phone without connecting to the PC lessening your chances of bricking it, and there is a Recovery mod also, so I would say it's safe to go ahead and root/flash.
Ok il'll try it, but i have some questions:
Will I lose any data or applications? I can't backup, I have 1gb left on my hdd.
Will I have to do factory or soft reset after flashing to custom rom?
Does flashing relace or "update" the system?
Is desire really having the CPU clocked at 1ghz or is it 720mhz like in HD2? Will overclocking it to 1ghz make the battery last less? How much then? Can you overclocking the graphics chip?
Thank you in advance.

Yes, if you attempt to a flash a custom rom that includes Apps2SD/A2SD, then you should backup the data on your SD card. The reason for this is because, with many (if not all) custom roms, excluding the Froyo roms, come with Apps2SD baked/cookef into the rom, requiring you to partition the SD card (which will also format your SD card, wiping everything) after flashing a custom rom. new rom then this will remove all data and apps, but nothing will be deleted on the sd card. I suggest you try backing up your sd card data to some storage media before attempting root and flashing to another rom.
You will notice that before flashing the rom of your choice, it is advised to wipe storage, cache, etc before flashing in recovery mode. After flashing, you can always perform a hard reset if you like, especially if you encounter any niggling bugs.
Yes, flashing will replace your stock rom image with the custom rom image.
You can flash Richard Trip's modified kernal, which allows you to perform undervolting and overclocking of the processor to run at faster or slower speeds. Overclocking will result in better performance but drain the battery quicker, Underclocking will save battery life.
Please read the second link in my sig for an in-depth explanation for rooting, flashing, and Apps2SD.
Note: if your phone is network branded then you will also be required a Gold Card and have an additional Micro SD card.
Note: if your rom comes with Apps2SD preinstalled, then do not install Apps2SD, only partition your sd card after flashing thr rom while still in recovery mode.
The process is:
Backup
Create Gold Card (if necessary)
Root
Place rom in root of sd card
Boot into recovery
Wipe everything
Flash rom in recovery
Partition sd card in recovery
Reboot
Restore backup to sd card.
That's all just too complicated, why is there no wizard application for it? I may make one, but it's still too complicated.
Can't you just open up cmd and type login: root pass: root?
To be honest, it's not too complicated, daunting at first, but when you read the nimbu guide (see my sig for Windows only method) for example, it makes perfect sense and it easy to follow. Just try it step-by-step and you will do it no probs.
All you have to remember is...
Dont install Apps2SD if it is already included in the custom rom you want to flash.
Create a Gold Card only if your phone is software branded. If it is generic, then you will not require a Gold Card.

Ok I get myself a class 6(maybe class 10) 8gb card and try it, then I'll pick up wxPython and try to make a wizard
Just to add, for the Gold Card itself, you dont need to buy a large capacity sd card, even a 2GB one will do fine.

I will gold card my old Nokia 5310 2gb card(although it has some undeletable extras... hmm..) or the one shipped with the phone. I want a lot space for movies, music and apps. So 8GB will be fine.
And most importantly I don't want ANY lag. **** driving me NUTS!
EDIT:
Just saw the tut again, hey this should be easy! K going on...

Ok matey, that sounds absolutely fine. You could even go for a Class 2 SD Card. I currently have a Transcend 8GB Class 6 but to be honest, I have not really noticed any differences in speed with the applications.
Yes, it's not so bad when you read the guide first, it's looks a lot at first but it's just because all the steps are appropriately broken down, which makes things easier to understand. Give it a stab and if you get any problems, just post back here and I will help you out, if necessary.
Good luck

is it a branded phone?
I have no lag
in future froyo 2.2 will there be root option?
I doubt it, HTC and Google would not want to have you "hacking" their phones... not that we do that on XDA

Okay I got stuck at error 170, where do I download the drivers? I don't even know which do I need, do I need the HTC Sync or what? Or should I uninstall some drivers?
thanks
Yes, you need HTC Sync installed (this is on your sd card or you can download the latest version via HTC website). Also, ensure that you have USB debugging enabled (Menu > Settings > Applications > Development).

Hi All,
my 2p worth (for what it's worth)
I rooted my desire and installed apps2sd and all was going well, until I discovered dust (a lot)under my screen and it has to go back to voda.
As there still isnt an RUU for voda uk I have had to install a generic wwe rom. It took me 6 hrs, and the fantastic help I received at modaco, to unroot and reflash the rom.
To say it was brown trouser time is an understatement lol
The only reason I rooted was for apps2sd and seeing as FroYo is going to include that facility, I don't think I will root again in the future.
I'm not saying don't root, but just make sure you can unroot if you need to.
I hope this helps?
Daz.
I rooted the same day it came out but only because i wanted paid apps available. And now its there i definately do not wanted to unroot

got 155 unkown error
What!?
EDIT:
not bricked.... phew
EDIT2:
Okay got to the wiping, tried to do the flash but it said I had no zip file on the sd card, so I thought that in the end I need a goldcard, btw can someone tell me what happens if you have branded phone but no goldcard? thanks, so back to what I was writing, so I downloadedthe hex editor, almost got to inserting the image, when i remembered that I already formatted the card already... boom! Of course it wasn't there! soo.. loading up hoping that FAT32 is still okay...
EDIT3:
phew... ROOTING!! yay ^^
hello all. i just recenlt bricked my galaxy s telus fascinate and got a desire replacement. i managed to get the root working without a issue (was superscared because of previous brick). now im looking for a rom. a good rom. coming from touch wiz, sense is mint. i love it.
so i want something that like stock sense with sense widgets without all the bloat and hopefully a proper app2sd (the stock app2sd is only moving like 1/3 of the data to sd and 2/3 is stayin in internal storage) . i heard desire hd roms r good but i dont really see the upside cause i dont know much about the phone yet just the OS. im runnin froyo 2.2 with hboot 93.0001.
any info would b mint. thx in advance
ps. only 1 day in, and the desire is running laps around the fascinate in every aspect except afew hardware issues like
-no internal sd card
-psx4droid is alot slower but i do own a hacked psp so no biggy
-and the app2sd sucks considering i went from 2 gigs internal storage to 133 mbs
but interface rocks. awaiting some opinions
You may want to take a gander at this thread: http://androidforums.com/desire-all-things-root/231930-desire-index-everything-desire-here.html
It has links to all the usual suspects when it comes to the different ROMs available, and once you get familiar with the ones that are out there you can do more detailed searches to see which one you may like the most. After that just download and get to flashing. As long as you nandroid backup before flashing anything you can always go back.

im looking for something exact replica of sense with a proper data2sd, bloatware removed. i heard desire hd roms r nicer but i really cant tell from videos on youtube. also i find sense alil bit slow in the home screen scrolling. is there any sense desire hd roms that can fix these issues?
LeeDroid 2.3d - superfast sense based 2.2 rom, with the stuff you need.
Baadnwz 1.8c- i'm using it now, a great HD port, but not as fast as the LD.

what about kernels? i had a overclocked voodoo kernel on my sgs and it ran games and emulators amazingly. ff9 on ps4drioid was running like 95% speed. any speed kernels or voodoo kernels available? and allso i hear the best way to manage storage is data and app2sd +. how do i go about installing that? b4 or after i flash the rom?
1. The Desire has an Adreno GPU, not a PowerVR SGX - so the graphics performance will be MUCH more slower, than the GS'. Also I use this kernel, gives me the best performance.
2. Most custom ROMs have that feature preinstalled (so installs automatically, when flashing the ROM), just make sure you have partitioned your SD Card (fat32+ext 2/3/4).

how do i go about partitioning the sd card? lm fat with a fresshreformat from my pc. now im quite sure ext/4 is the safest and most stable partition to use and 2 being the worst. on sgs, voodoo did the ext/4 for me and didnt have to do the work. so im confused on this part since ive seen nothing with a voodoo tag on it since i joined. and voodoo had to be deactivated everytime u flashed new software. does that still apply here>?
Use Gparted or easus partition for that.
Create a FAT32 partition first and then an ext4 partition (both primary).
You have to look for a2sd+ here in the ROMs description to make it work (LeeDroid definiately works). Make sure you have partitioned the SD card then just flash the ROM (of course nandroid backup first & full wipe) and it will go, you have to do nothing. It is an auto-script.

k im donwloapding gparted partition. how do i do this? i have a nandroid backup of stock with root and it says i will lose my data. and how does the program work? im finding the htc hacking to have alot more work involved then sgs. how do i backup my nandroid? can i copy and paste to my pc?do i partition thru the phone or pop the card out and put it directly into the pc?
how do i use this program?
A very good tutorial how to use Gparted, if you have no idea.
+Make sure you create a boot CD/USB correctly
How did you root your desire? With Unrevoked? What custom recovery do you have CWM or Amon RA?
How to make a nandroid backup.
Also search youtube and this forum on HOW to use a custom recovery.
k so i used some windows partition creator and partitioned fat32 with a 1.5 gb ext3 partition. flashed rcsmixhd. looks mint. running good so far. got the telus network working. only thing i really need 2 know is how does the app2sd+ work? does it automatically install it too sd? or do i haveta use a app? or can i go thru the settings applicqations manage move to sd card? this is all i have left todo so plz advice is a must
nvm i looked around and foundout titanium backup shows apps2sd drive. sweet. thx 4 all the help so far desire has a large lead on the fascinate. looks so beautiful
Pretty straightforward there. Have been running fresh evo and cm7 since j got my phone. This is my first attempt to flash back to a sense rom. My SD card disappears whenever I flash to one of the new gingersense roms. It shows up fine when I flash any other rom aswell.
Any suggestions that don't inviolve going into sdk with a computer? I don't really have access to a comp right now.
Is this a totally rare problem or something that's been answered?
I looked through and couldn't discussions on it to see if perhaps it was a known issue. It seems to have to do with flashing to any sense ROM. Not positive if it also has to do with coming from CM 7.
Gonna try bouncing around from a few other roms and see if anything works.
The exact message I'm getting when I boot up is "SD Card unexpectedly removed."
If I reboot into recovery, the SD card is there. If I flash to a non sense based rom, no problems. I've tried manually mounting the SD card from recovery and no help.
HTC Sync also doesn't recognize that I have an SD card once I try and use it.
I really want to give some of these new roms a spin (especially with how snappy they are and how buggy and glitchy CM7 has been) but I can't until I can use an SD.
Whoops . . .it seemed like things were working (SD card registered in MikFroyo and then was, once again, unexpectedly removed) but then it went out again.
Could this have something to do with an of the zipalign/move to SD function or apps?
Basically, I just can't flash to any sense rom.
my sd card works fine, although the rom is kinda on the slower side for me, but I guess I have to make sacrifices for sense 2.0..... Ahh CM7 here I come! (lol we'll see)
I can't flash to anything sense now . . . I'm tired of messing with cm7 and just want something snappy and stable. cm7 is stable in spurts but with heavy use, issues always seem to crop up - I love CM and it's options but right now it still feels very much work in progress.
I just want something that's running gingerbread and is smooth. I really enjoy the new Evo and Sense ports out right now but not having an SD card is obviously not an option.
Does anyone maybe just have some good advice on where to ask about this?
After searching, this is a pretty serious problem that nobody has found a fix for.
I get "Failed to move application. Not enough memory" when trying to move apps to the sd card.
Problem is, I have plenty of memory on my sd card (4gb) and I had all these apps and more on my sd card before a recent flash to EF02. I've seen this problem on my girlfriends EVO as well.
Could it be related to the internal storage being too low? It seems like when the internal memory warning pops up, it goofs up all kinds of things related to memory.
Also, is there a way to delete all installed apps at once from my phone?
Try getting SD Maid from the market it see if that works for you. It worked for me.
Thats just a bug with EF02.

I thought that maybe was the case. But it's a pretty common bug across a lot of Android phones/ROMs, if you google it.
Also, My first try at EF02, I flashed over EE03 without wiping anything. And had great results, and then something made my stock browser go fishy (mightve been EE03 8 lockscreen mod), so I wiped and re-flashed, and then using mybackup root to reinstall all my apps, I ran into this problem.
And doesn't really matter for a while now. Just dropped my phone in the toilet. Wasn't in there longer than 1 second, but I got it in rice now anyways.
Sorry to hear about your phone making a visit to the toilet, im not sure what the rice thing is but maybe you could shed some light on it for me. also i have the apps 2 sd prob, except i cannot install custom roms due to md5 mismatch on x8, but my wifes x8 has no probs, i can install all roms no problem if i use her card for the install and backup, which is a bit annoying as she is happy with floyo 0.30 and wont swap cards with me. i tried formatting the card and making an exact image of hers but no joy, no custom roms or a2sd for me. if anyone has figured this out then please please let me know.
Thanks in advance and as this is my first post i should say thanks to doixanh, racht and all those who have put in so much effort to make our little x8 a great device, keep up the great work.
Hey guys I have a few questions to ask. Wen I first flashed my first sense 3.0 gingerbread rom it had recommended to partition my sd card cuz of the amount of memory the rom used up. I followed the instructions carefully to partition and it seemed to have been successful wen I was done (I think I used Amon RA recovery). I have a Lexar 32gb class 10 card and since then I have flashed several 3.0 sense gingerbread roms and my internal memory on everyone has always been around 90 to 110 mb causing my phone to be extremely laggy. At the point wat should I do? Is there a way to check if my card is partition properly? Should I try to repartition card or would this cause me to have future read error problems on my sd card? Any advice wud b helpful, THANKS! Just want my phone to b fast like it was before.

I don't think its your SD card partition that's acting up, some phones just don't go well with certain ROMs. What ROM are you using? Also you can always try overclocking by flashing a kernel that supports it like either netarchy's kernel or Lithid's Freedom kernel(the latter of which is my personal favorite) that should reduce lag.
Sent from my Synergized Freedom Evo.
Well lets see the first one that came out I think it was the Viper Kingdom Rom, then Kings Rom Alliance 3.0 Hybrid 3D, Kinged Shooter E3D and one more but I cant remember wat it was. Thats 4 already so I dont think its my phone thats not taking good to these roms. Ive tried flashing different kernals and that did not work. There must b something that I can do to fix this problem. My phone never had problems with any froyo roms only the new gingerbread roms. Now I will tell u I hav not flashed the new radios,PRI or any of those updates, can that maybe b a factor? Wud u recommend me to do so?
