Recently I came across a very strange issue with my Defy. Whenever i wanted to listen to music with my defy via the external connected speaker the phone was getting almost completely unresponsive, the touch screen was going wild - apps running themselves, random buttons pressed themseves etc. Most of the time I streamed the music with Digitally Imported radio or Tune-In Radio and I thought that these applications use a lot o memory and processor and simply my phone doesn't manage to run them and multitask and be fast while I'm using them. But with some time I notced that the freezes and unresponsiveness are only an issue when connected to the speakers, and not when the music is played by the internal speakers or even my headphones.
The speaker I own is a JBL On-Call one (really good sound btw ) but I notced that it conducts an electric current through the wire which Im using to connect the speaker to the Defy , and this causes the problem. I could even feel the current on the wire's jack wth my bare finger. This never happend when the phone is connected to any other speakers or headphones.
So just out of my interest I created this thread here, so maybe it helps other people to find the reason for a similar behavior in theirs phone.
Grounding is not good enough for the JBL as the Defy picks up even a very little leak current flow from the connected external ground. If you have a PC tower casing or other appliances with metal casing, try connect the JBL speaker's jack ground to these casing while connected to your Defy and play a music. I assumed you should know the little wiring experiment here. Worried not as nothing will harm your Defy with this test.

So I've got a pair (if you can call it a pair) of Motorola Motorokr S9-HD Headphones.
I can connect them to the phone just fine, but when I cover the bottom portion of the phone with my hand the signal drops out completely and I was wondering if anyone else experiences this or if it's just me.
So surrounding the bottom portion of the phone (with the Home, Menu, Search and Back buttons) with my hand and the signal drops out. Headphones on, phone in front of me.
Same thing happens if I push the phone up against my chest/stomach, no signal. Sometimes to the point that it disconnects entirely.
Normally I would be like "no big deal, I just won't do that." But the phone being in either my front or back pocket causes the same effect, making them kind of useless.
So, end result, is it my headphones, my phone, or both? Can you test the headset you have and see how it works out for you?
I've attempted this on stock ROM with Root, Fresh 5.3, and DC 3.2.3 with the same results each time.
I tihnk the BT and WIFI ant's are on the bottom
teh CDMA is on top -- if i cover the top, i can go from 4 bars to 0 barz
if i cover the bottom the wifi drops a lot
i think the BT ant is pretty weak .. couldn't go more than 10 ft from a laptop doing audio streaming
i'll try the BT later on when i get home unless someone else gets to it first

Well if the BT antenna isn't on the bottom, then why is it when I put my hand over the bottom the signal drops?
I want to see if anyone else can replicate this issue..
I have the same headset. I tried everything you did and it works for me. I occasionally get a breakup of audio, but it is not related, however it is the headset.

Damn, that sucks. I hardly used the damn thing. Thanks for checking it out, I would have assumed it was the phone.

i'm saying the tooth antenna IS (probably) on the bottom hence why you cover it up it dont work as good. sorry my grammer sucks
I would swap it for another one. While generally I find the headset to be a great improvement over past Bluetooth Headsets, I am still not impressed that after 15 years that bluetooth has been around that it has yet to impress me as a wireless medium.
This headset is still only class 2 and Bluetooth 2.0. Where are all of the Class 1 and Bluetooth 4.0 devices?
I have tried all the Plantronic, Jawbone and Numerous Motorola devices and have been left wanting. I will probably be returning this headset as well. Although it has good sound quality, the earbuds (event he smallest ones) are too big for my ears and they do not seat down inside like a quality pair of tips. The phone breaks up especially while on the phone, but for listening to music, it is in general quite a good device.
The biggest problem with going wired headsets is that people have quit making a good wired stereo heatset with mic.
well, I have had 20 or more BT headsets, and, the only one I have EVER had that played music without breakup is the Jawbone Icon..
Sure the sound sucks, its mono and tinny, but I never lose signal with pandora, slacker, or sd card music with this headset..
motorola s9HD was one of the worst ones I had for losing signal from my phones..agree that its a shame that no one is able to make a HQ STEREO BT lightweight headset that doesnt drop signal yet..
the backbeats are damn good for music, world better than my s9s. ive got the 903 but the 906 are supposedly even better
I have the same issue with the motorolas, not as bad as you but I do get the breakup if i carry the phone in front of me. I have the Shure 530 headphones which kick ass so I got a Sony BT Transmitter, I think it is the BT15 or maybe the BT30, works perfect for me, I clip it on the front of my shirt plug in the Shures and presto bluetooth. The receiver even has a built in mic, works about as good as the Motorolas.

I can't for the life of me remember which one I have but be advised one of them has a mini usb charger the other requires a specific cradle, i go the one that has the mini usb, didn't want to carry around a specific charger for this.
Hi guys
For me, this is a minor annoyance at best, but I just want to know if this is normal.
Occasionally when I plug in a pair of headphones in my GNex, it generates noises in the headphones and I need to wiggle the plug to make it go away.
However, there is another problem, although I suspect this is a software issue on this one. The problem is that if the phone is playing music at this point, wiggling around the headphone will cause the music to pause. I think this is because the system thought I unplugged the headphones.
I wasn't going to ask this because I thought this is due to my old and cheap earphones giving out, but this happened again with another pair of new earphones, it often happens when I first plug in the headphone for a long time.
Anyone had similar experience and/or any solution or thoughts?
Thanks in advance for any inputs
For a second there I thought this was the general forum
It sounds like your headphone jack is wearing out or has always been loose. Send it back to samsung and get it fixed
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus
It must be a defective jack cause mine is solid as can be. No noise or loose connection at all, and I use it constantly.
Thanks for the replies, although I seriously hope that it's not due to a defective jack.....
I found similar audio issues with other phones, and they pointed out that it might due to a dusty jack.
I cleaned my jack a little bit and everything seems to be okay now It is a bit dusty though.....
Hopefully this will be the end of the problem. However I will contact Samsung for sure if this problem arises again.
Hi,
I have been trying to troubleshoot my issues and have had no luck.
one day my headphones stopped playing in my right ear so I figured it was a bad headphone jack. I bought a new one and replaced it. Now it only plays when button control headphones are plugged in (the plugs with the 3 black stripes not the 2 like standard earbuds). It does play but if I turn the headphone plug it stops playing at certain points while turning. the rear speaker works fine.
I tried having the jack plugged in with the metal outer case off and I have the same issue (again, I don't think a short is an issue).
I checked everything and the headphone jack appears to be fine, doesn't appear to be a short anywhere. I am at a loss on what my next step would be.
Thank you.
There are lots of possible solutions, that you can try.
Sounds like you might just need to replace the audio receiver.

Here's a pre-existing thread full of people having similar issues.

A few weeks ago I dropped my phone about 6 inches onto a hard metal lamp. When it contacted I heard a loud squeal in the earbuds I was wearing. Now when I use the earbuds the audio files are muted, tinny and filled with static. It sounds like the headphone jack is not inserted all the way – like a hardware issue. The earbuds operate normally otherwise, and all other earbuds I have tested produce the same bad results when inserted into the phone. The files play normally through Bluetooth and speakers, but no matter what headset I use in the audio jack, all audio (music, podcasts, system tones, etc.) is garbled and filled with static.
I have researched the issue and at first thought that I damaged the metal cover around the audio jack because there was a small “chip” right next to the audio jack opening. So, I ended up buying a new metal cover, but that didn’t resolve the issue (nor did just leaving the cover off). I bought a new daughter board with audio jack, but unfortunately the one I received was (I suspect) for the ATT version of the phone since some of the antennas were slightly different. I did, however, install the new daughter board/audio jack for testing purposes, and this, too, did not solve the audio issues! So, I reinstalled the old jack and daughter board. Since then I have reinstalled the phone’s OS (rooted stock 5.0.2 with Sense 6.0) and turned off Beats to see if this would fix things – all to no avail. As far as I can tell, the only thing I haven’t done is install a new motherboard. By the way, the audio jack interfaces normally with the OS as far as sensing the insertion/removal of headsets. I am out of ideas but am posting this to see if anyone has a suggestion.
This started recently, only actually noticed it as my phone last night. I was watching a YouTube video and the audio just quit. I checked other audio and it wasn't working either. I smacked the back of my phone and it started working, like the jack was initialized while empty. I have been using a stereo on a moped with my phone in the seat, and it had been cutting out a lot, assuming from this issue and minor bouncing about in the seat. Given the way this phone is designed, j didn't think a little vibration and bouncing would hurt anything. Unless steam from having my phone in the shower (not directly in water, just in the shower) caused the damage. Also have YouTube pause framing while audio plays but I think that's software.
Mine is working fine, never had issues... and though I can't offer a fix... I can sadly assure you that repetitive vibrations to electronic devices can cause mechanical connection failures.
Watch a video of a tear down of an s7 (or really any other smart phone) and look at how small the tacks of solder are on the headphone jack to wire connection.
It is quite possible that the connection is starting to crack inside loose.
As a side note, when on a motorcycle or scooter it's better to have the phone held in a pocket or backpack then directly against the bike... there is a vibration absorption that happens through you from the bike... having it directly on the bike means the item is more directly vibrated continually.... and thus more likely to be damaged from vibrations.
Got the phone today and the jack doesnt work, unless i hold the plug in by hand.
Good thing i ran in to this thread or i wouldnt have checked it for a week.
Update:
Turns out that the jack is very stiff and i have to force the phone plug every single time in to the jack. It works fine, just very stiff.
