Im looking for a little help on going from my rooted droid x2 (gingerbreak root) to stock gingerbread, which I can then re-root with the MotorolaOneClickRoot.
They explicitly say that it doesnt have great results with OTA gingerbread coming from a rooted froyo, so I figure it would be safest to go to stock gingerbread.
My question would be... Since gingerbreak has an "unroot" option, can I just unroot the gingerbreak and get the OTA update for gingerbread? I was told by someone I have to SBF into the stock gingerbread, but would the unroot -> ota update be essentially the same thing?
That was my plan, but if there is an easier way to go from gingerbreak rooted froyo to rooted gingerbread, im open to suggestions.

*edit: just a note - I did try to search for answers on the forums, and im still searching for answers, but im having a hard time finding this specific situation. I would rather do the OTA update if possible, since I know next to nothing about installing custom roms etc. If I HAVE to do that, a link would help also. I apologize if the question has been answered before... I just want to have a pretty good idea what to do before I get into it.

You probably should have posted this in the Droid X2 subforums, but that's okay. I would recommend installing bootstrap recovery if you haven't already, and then backup your entire phone using nandroid in recovery. (This way you don't loose anything--but if you don't care, you can skip over this) And then grab RSD Lite, and the latest leaked SBF and flash it (links below). You will loose root, so yes, you will need Pete's One Click. Flashing the SBF does not wipe your data. So all of your stuff should stay, however, if you get bootloops, you will need to boot into stock recovery and wipe /data.
There's another OTA coming out soon, and it would just be a waste of time to update to 2.3.3. and then wait for the next OTA. The 2.3.3 version has severe problems that flashing the latest SBF does NOT have. This is why I am recommending that you flash the latest 2.3.4 SBF and skip over the OTA crap. Btw, installing roms is really not all that hard.

Refer to this guide, if you don't know how to flash an SBF (it's super easy). Just do NOT install the RSD Lite versions he lists in the post. It's too old.

I can follow instructions easy enough, but they need to be very low level. When people reply with directions like "Flash to the latest SBF" it really doesnt help me, but the links you provided look easy enough to follow.

I recently rooted my Desire and tried some various ROMs, but chose to stay with the stock 2.1 untill 2.2 was released OTA.
Today I got the message that I could update OTA, but denied, since I thought I might lose my root and my superuser access.
My question is:
Should I update OTA, or find an official ROM here so I don't lose my root - If so, what ROM should I use?
Can I update without getting a wipe, of can I backup or something before I install 2.2 to not wipe everything?

YOU SHOULD NOT OTA! as you put it. If you update via ota you will loose root and will be unable to root again. Just download one of these "official" rooted roms and flash via recovery/rom manager. No need to wipe. If the rom is as close to the official one you'll never know you changed roms. Everything will look the same. All your widgets and such will be there. No need to wipe. But if you do have problems you should wipe and reflash. Hope this helps. Have fun!

EDIT: I just found "Pinky Desire" by pinkolin. Is this the way to go? Am beeing a bit scared of him openly saying that this is his first, but it seems like this is the only deodexed ROM so far and the other facts look juicy too.. ..anyone?
well first I installed the rom posted by ieftm 'cos it's as close to the official one as possible. I'll just wait a few days until things settle down and then I'll look for another rom.
as far as I understood he added VPN and ext4 support to the rom - I don't know if this could cause anything.. but I think you're right with your other statement..
Just wait a few days until everything settles, should be fairly easy to switch to another ROM and maybe even transfer everything with Titanium Backup or so..
that's the reason I went for that rom. Everything he changed is harmless. No wipe no nothing. And I had everything back the same as before flashing so I didn't need titanium backup or any other backup app. Hm leeDroid lookin' pretty good tho'
I flashed the rooted 3.36.651.3 ROM when it came out. Now that .6 is out, and 2.2 has been rooted can I accept the .6 OTA? I am not sure what will happen.
I am fully rooted and unlocked. Will I retain root? I prefer not to wipe my phone if I dont have to. Thanks for helping a confused noob!
You're better off flashing the rooted version of .6 instead of doing the OTA. The OTA will unroot you unless you have Unrevoked Forever, but even then, why risk it? Even if you did do the OTA, you COULD unroot, but that would be more of a "oh, crap, I screwed up, at least I can fix it" way of doing things. I'm not super-familiar with what UF actually does, but definitely don't do anything without installing that and switching to S-OFF. Then you can try the .6 OTA. If it works, great. If not, you'll have to use the new root method (and wipe your phone anyway) to downgrade, then you'll HAVE to flash the rooted version or another custom ROM after that to get up to 2.2 again.
Thats what I figured too. I wasnt sure if the OTA would leave the su and various pieces in place or what... Is it safe to flash the .6 rooted over .3 rooted? Suggestions on which version? I prefer to stay as close to stock as I can. Thanks for the quick reply.

As for flashing up to a new version without wiping, that's up to you. Within the same version (stock to stock) it should be okay, but if you're switching to a custom version, you have to wipe. I do anyway just to make sure there aren't fragments or anything lying around that will screw things up. I'm cautious like that.
netarchy recommends doing a full wipe first. Has anyone done an upgrade over .3 successfully? There also appear to people experiencing issues toward the 56th page.... that was my initial concern in why I was asking about the OTA.

after i rooted last night, i tried to update to the ota, and keep root then, i could download the file, but it would not install, started to, but froze everytime, tried it a few times, and just said forget it.

Thanks for all the responses. I was able to use the update and flash right over .3 and now .6 still rooted! I used titanium & rom manager to backup everything in case I needed to roll back. Its been a day without any issues.

Ive come from the desire which ive installed just about every rom on and modified the partition table dozens of times so im no stranger to rooting... however this defy has me confused.
I need 2.2 to access lotus traveller for my work emails so im looking to install a custom rom until T-mobile uk finally release the official one but im reading all sorts of things like not being able to downgrade if you flash certain roms which arent "fixed".
Can someone give me a brief overview so i can get my head round what all this is about and can anyone point me in the direction of a good solid 2.2 rom which is as close to the official rom as possible?

I've just recently flashed this 3.4.3-11 http://depositfiles.com/en/files/tjnmh6d98 onto my Defy & it's running great. There's no T-Mobile branding on this one & I doubt that you would be able to downgrade to an older version either.
You'll need RSD Lite V4.9, Motorola Drivers (I used V4.9 for these).
I followed Higgsy's great guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=853674 about flashing a sbf & it worked a treat - in fact this current sbf is the 2nd froyo that I've flashed.

thanks for that. Ive actually managed to get a version of 3.4.2 on now which can be downgraded. Im starting to get the hang of this, it certainly a different process than what im used to thanks to motorola!
Im trying to keep it to stock roms now as I found with my desire there was always some bug that "bugged" me with custom roms so with this I think when the official 2.2 comes out for the UK I will flash it and keep the phone unrooted ( I only ever initially got into rooting for apps2sd anyway)
The reason for needing to keep it downgradeable is purely for the warranty with t-mobile otherwise I would just go with the rom you suggested.
Do you know of any version of 3.4.3-11 that is out there that is downgradeable that is still close to stock in terms of apps and features?
edit :its worth noting that higgsys procedure doesnt work with the eclair 2.51, you end up with the black screen issue. ( I imagine most are shipping with this now) although the general guidelines still apply, just different files are needed.
I'm not clued up on anything other than flashing a sbf via RSD Lite but if you have a look at the SBF Service File sticky in the Defy Dev forum the last post or two links to a fixed sbf & a nandroid of 3.4.3-11.

I would like to create a full stock backup, I do not care for applications or settings, the only thing I want is full non-rooter, current Gingerbread with ability to install possible upcoming OTA updates.
The reason for this is simple, I want to try out different ICS roms just for fun and then go back to original, HTC Sense 2.1 powered rom.
The question is: How do I do that? I know I can handle rooting the device and installing various things but how do I get back?

If you have already rooted your phone and installed a recovery such as ClockworkMod or 4EXT, reboot into recovery and go to the "Backup" menu and make a full backup.
In the event of problems, you can do a full wipe or factory reset, and then go to the same backup/restore menu to restore your backup from the SD card.
But if the phone is Gingerbread (it is) I have to downgrade first, correct? To Froyo 2.2. So Basically that leaves me with a copy of 2.2 while my phone came with Gingerbread in the first place.
It basically shows that I've changed (downgraded) the software, doesn't it?

If you have ALREADY rooted it, then there is no need to be downgrading back to an exploitable firmware when you've already exploited the phone. If all you're doing is installing a custom rom on an already rooted/unlocked phone then you need only flash the roms via recovery.
You would only have to downgrade the firmware if you for some reason decided to flash the original stock firmware, hboot, etc onto the phone.
But that's least as far as the backups go.
In terms of how to get the phone back to non-root/locked state there's a sticky/wiki for that, though I would find it to be a pain in the butt to have the phone rooted and unlocked and then have to go thru the process of locking it back up only to possibly risk bricking it. The more times you mess with the firmware/radio/hboot the more likely you are to brick it.
Just to make it all clear my phone is kinda new, was never rooted, that's why I'm asking. I still can't believe that HTC doesn't have an app like Xperia has, SEUS to be exact, you can fix any phone with one click. By saying fix I mean install the latest, official rom.
That's too bad there is no other way to root Desire Z.

If never rooted there's not much of a way to make a full backup first (since most backup tools like Titanium Backup requires root).
That's too bad there is no other way to root Desire Z.

Well there is the HTCDev unlocker from HTC themselves, but you actually have better luck following something like cyanogenmod's wiki entry.
Something like this works quite well : http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/HTC_Vision
You just need to make sure to triple-check all the numbers and messages, someone accidentally skipping 2 or 3 steps multiple times is just asking for problems.
But once rooted (like for my G2 I followed the cyanogenmod steps, and then went another step by upgrading my radio to the latest, I just went with a different rom after being rooted) it's usually best to keep it that way even if you decide to just flash the stock rom (i.e.: still rooted and unlocked, but simply using the original software they provide you, which can be rooted simply by having the su binary and superuser app).
The voiding of warranty usually applies to software, i.e.: you bricked the phone as a result of flashing the wrong hboot. Where as if the screen or eMMC dies, it's a hardware failure and shouldn't be voided simply because the phone was rooted (unless of course they determined you fried your CPU by running the phone at 1.9Ghz constantly).
You could just download a full version of the G2 gingerbread rom from shipped-roms.com and flash that if you ever want/need to go back to stock gingerbread.

I used RumRunner originally, so I am rooted and have s-off, but aside from that I'm running the stock ROM. For the record, I have run a few scripts (from these forums) and apps ("NoBloat") to remove the Verizon bloatware, so I'm not exactly running "pure" stock.
Here are my questions:
1. What's the best way to get the phone to stop bugging me if I want to stay on 4.2? Can I turn off the notification? I'm not sure which app controls this, so I'm currently unable to get it to stop notifying me.
2. If I wanted to try downloading and installing the OTA update (I am running the TWRP recovery), where would I find the downloaded file in the recovery directories, and what is the file name? Is there any risk to doing thison top of my current ROM? I kind of don't want to bother with restoring to stock, then updating, then re-rooting/etc. (Hence question one.)

2) YOU MUST be STOCK, and the stock recovery to take the OTA assuming you are on the .15 version. Here is the link to the stock recovery: http://goo.gl/OdVbX6
You can flash one of santod040's stock odex roms right on top of your current ROM. NO need to wipe data.
Some advice before continuing, make sure you are not only s-off, but bootloader unlocked as well ( believe me it will save you a headache ) Here how WITHOUT HTCDEV
Then swap out the recovery, then take the OTA, flash back your recovery, then flash superSU to the ROM, rooted! That's how i did mine.
