This might be a silly question, but considering how much longer the international GS2 users have had with the phone, there's a tremendous amount of mods out there that would be great additions to this particular edition of the GS2.
Would it be feasible for any of those to work over here? If so, are there specifically any that will work (such as, mods for the I9001 will work, but not the ones for I9000).
Thanks in advance!
Depends on what the mod is. Some will some won't. If you're not sure nandroid before applying.
How about a mod that gives you more options when you press the Power button: Restart (into Recovery, etc). Things like that.
If so, which would be the best model to get mods from, as far as most likely compatibility?
We're seeing "I've bricked my phone" posts from folks using i9100 mods, roms, etc, so be careful...

I'd say there is no best model, use you best judgement, if the mod is effecting model specific features, aka something like a hotspot hack then it probably won't work.
As far as the exact feature you are requesting try Quickboot from the market, requires root but allows for rebooting and recovery shortcuts on a homescreen.

[Q] Best ROM for using as MP3 Player? Remove "phone" button and disable cell antenna?
Just got a droid incredible and I'm using it as an mp3 player (ipod touch killer).
Basically, I don't need verizon service (cell antenna) or the phone button.
What's the best ROM for this? Would like something stable without many (or any) bugs (compared to stock).
Also would like one that would extend battery life if it doesn't sacrifice much else.

I would use one of the stock based roms like my rom Touch of Blue, or jermaines Stock+ rom. I do not know how to turn off the radio in a way that is presistent after a reboot. To remove the phone button you would need to decompile a couple framework apks edit them and then recompile them. Not sure exactly what you would need to edit. I know how to make it not say phone but there would still be a pushable button there that brings up the dialer.
Mabey i will look into making a rom like this for fun. It might get some use now that a lot of people have retired their incredibles and moved to other newer phones.
So even if I use a an AOSP rom, I would still have the phone button issue?
What about using GB with Sense 3.0?
I'll take a look at your ROM, thanks
If the presence of the phone button will bother you, just use a custom launcher with whatever rom you flash.

There's a script somewhere in the dev forum that disables everything but wifi if I am not mistaken, and changing over to something like launcher pro should satisfy your no phone needs.
Try this maybe.

and you can use Go Launcher or Launcher Pro Plus for your custom launcher and have no phone button.
Personally I'd go with Launcher Pro Plus.. I think it's quicker, though the developer has stopped developing it- it's still solid for our phones.
just delete the phone apk on the rom? you can always reflash if you run into issues. it should give a battery increase too.

That will not actually remove the phone button though, it just wont bring up the dial pad.

Wow thanks for the replies everyone.
For the time being, I've put the phone in airplane mode and kept wifi on.
I will try a different launcher soon - I also have an HTC flyer and had issues with other launchers (stability-wise).
I will root the phone when I get a chance so I can use that script.

I have a guide that would help you do this.
It probably needs a little updating since i'm doing another phone I will add what ever new info I find

Hello,
I just got my Samsung Captivate Glide today. I am based in the UK so I have a few questions:
- From what I have seen, there are two mods available for this model, Osimod and Inc3ption. What are the differences and what are people using?
- Will flashing one of these unlock the phone from AT&T?
Any other tips & tricks for a new user are very welcome!
Thanks!

Please look at this link as their are more then 2 roms:

Unfortunately to unlock you will have to purchase an unlock code or there is a way to unlock but you will get a generic MEI number which may not work for some providers.
Welcome to the wonderful world of the Captivate Glide!

being in the time where ICS is hopefully near, devs may want to do all their work and time working on ICS....this is the reason i think why there are less ROMs/MODs here aside from less developers.
Meanwhile, I do have the Stock firmware installed, but I do have MODs (like root). Most of the mods I apply are in build.prop for performance, battery saving, and stability.
You can search build.prop custom settings and most of them works on the glide. I have been using build.prop settings since i got the glide and gives me good results...
Hi there,
Thanks so much for your replies!
What is the difference between a mod and a rom?
Also, I find it really strange that the phone does not have a notification LED and I read somewhere that you could make the menu buttons light up instead with a hack.
Thanks!

ROM is like the whole system (don't know if it's right to call it the OS) that runs in the device....like the combination of apps, themes, settings, etc. So a phone without a ROM wont run.
MOD is short for Modifications (I believe), because stock and custom ROMs have default settings or MODs, your device will run without them, or you can improve the device's overall performance with it.

By default our phone does not support the use the menu button lights as led's but I have heard that there are special kernels and Roms to use that do support this. I have not tried this yet but I too find it attractive.

Ok guys, I am new to any android evelopment but i now have some time on my hand before starting a job developing embedded linux sytems.
So im sure many people are aware of blubbers menu button mod to remove the ics menu buttons.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1582506
basically ,me included, alot of other people want different combinations of the keys.
For example
Back: SP->Back
LP->Kill App
Home:SP->Home
LP->RecApps
RecApps: SP->Search
LP->Menu
with the introduction of aroma installer it allows different configurations.
So with the help of the rest of the community i would like to create a mod which allows users to select different cimbinations of short press and long press functions for each of the three buttons. Also add an option to disable the ics menu button if desired.
Anyone that can five me a help to get staryed on this, it owuld be appreciated.

cheers man i do remember reading you saying that a while back. However 'no offense' I do not want to install your rom. I would like to be able to have a mod that could allow this functionality on ANY rom.
however i might actually giver your rom a go. im on ARHD 4.0 (been busy with university recently to notice any uypdates) and your rom certainly seems alot better since i last looked at it.

It'll be awesome to have a stand alone mod to do this, so we can use it with any rom, even stock rooted ones...
j4n87 in your experience do you think it's possible to do this? or the only way is cooking the mod in a ROM like yours?

...sure, would be possible. But within my Rom and with my tweaks they are fully reconfigurable....you can choose between HTC speak, recent apps or any.custom app..and for the back button also to close an app.

I really do appreciate the initiative, and just like you, I do like the rom I am running (CM9 alpha 4) but would love to be able to customise the hardware buttons as I please...
Overall, a mod would allow more flexibility to users...
Thanks in advance!
Does anyone know if there's a mod that exists that moves the back key to the far left and recent key to far right? It drives me nuts when I'm typing and I hit the recent key all the time.

To my limited knowledge there is no option for this unless you are rooted or using a custom rom.
There's an option for it in ParanoidAndroid. Just select Phone UI in the Paranoid Settings.

If you mod... Then it isn't stock then is it?
I don't know why people are afraid of custom ROMs. They aren't very far off from a stock rom except stuff like this is already included.
How is you modding your "stock" rom different from someone modding it for you? All ROMs come from the same place when you have a Nexus.
And, yes, custom ROMs allow you to pick and choose any function and whatever icon you want for up to 5... each having the ability to press and hold for an additional 5 functions. I typically include a phone and SMS button on top of the standard 3.
I'm on Xenon BTW. Its the only rom that doesn't suck my battery down in a few hours.

I'm not afraid of flashing different Roms. I prefer the stock with my n7. Most Roms have some bugs in it. I know I've tried a ton. I just wish I could have the back and recent keys spaced out.

Paranoid 2.5 is a stable build.

i haven't seen any mod like this yet.
however, i have to agree with the others.
Flash a custom ROM and enjoy.
the stock ROm is built from AOSP
all custom ROMs are built from AOSP.
yes there may be bugs, but they are most likely in the "tweaks" and "add-ons" the developer made, not with the basic functionality of the ROM.
Hi,
I would like to know if it is possible via an app or mod to add or remove or change the position of the capacitive buttons.
Currently the stock M8 Sense format is Back, Home, Switcher.
I would like to know if it is possible to make it Back, Menu, Home, Switcher, Search.
Please let me know I am dying for a regular menu and search button!

Why not just get to used to how Android is changing and not live in the past? It's not hard to get your head around it and it'll be easier then asking for mods people just don't want any more...

Android is all about customization and personalisation.
It doesn't hurt to ask and see if it is possible, because it has been done before. So no need for such a douchebag kind of response.

OK, my response might've come across a bit 'off' but the principal is still the same. If the mod was wanted by the community then someone would've made it. Xposed might already have something similar available so might be worth looking at that option but I'd personally say it's better off to just get used to what Google are doing to make Android better (yes, better) and accept the change...

the dude just wants an extra search and menu button because that's his preference. Like I said before, Android is all about personalization and customization. If you don't like a change that has been applied, then there are possible methods it can be altered. Telling someone to "accept the change" is contrary to the purpose of XDA and Android. Heck if a guy wanted a gingerbread style status bar or something are you going to tell him "no, just accept the change, it was for the better?"
You shouldn't, because it's all about preference. While it might be better for the majority of the user base, he might not like it and there is nothing wrong with asking if someone has devised a method to apply that change, ESPECIALLY because he posted in the Q/A section.

Just asking to see if it is available, no need for this type of response
