i used visionary to temp root my device, then i clicked on the perm root option just to say what happened then my phone froze i started touching the screen and a menu popped up and i clicked an option on accident. the option on the left. then my phone shut off and is froze on the htc boot screen. i pulled the battery and the same thing happened. i tried a factory data reset and the phone is still frozen on the boot screen. please help T-Mo G2, 2.2, no roms
I really do not know why the visionary guides are allowed on these forums. I find it GROSSLY irresponsible of the mods. It has been proven TIME AND TIME AND TIME AND TIME again that visionary bricks phone. For god sakes there is a sticky at the top of the forum saying DON'T USE VISIONARY FOR PERM ROOT. Your phone might be screwed. And its really not your fault. Those threads need closed. Period. Seriously mods, how many phones do you want ruined before you rid the forum of the visionary crap. The gfree method among MANY other alternatives works and DOESN'T BRICK PHONES. WHY LET THIS CRAP STAY FOR PEOPLE LIKE THIS WHO SEE IT AS AN EASY METHOD AND JUMP AT IT UGH.

if you'd done some research (not picking on you, just for future reference), you'd have found many a testimony that visionary should not be used on the vision--oh, the irony--to obtain permanent root. visionary temp root is fine, but its perm root is dangerous to our phones.
are you able to boot into recovery? do you have a custom recovery (ie clockworkmod) installed? do you have the engineering hboot installed?
Visionary's Perm root will basically brick your phone... sorry
i can boot into recovery but i dont have cyanogen or any roms or anything installed i just rooted my phone
will htc help me?

Don't tell them that you tried to root your phone, just tell them it did it on it's own.
sure, they'll probably find out once they've got it, but by then they'll probably just fix it. htc sometimes fixes rooted phones if the they belive the problem was something else.
for example (this has actually happened):
lets say your phones screen stopped working, but it was rooted. the root has nothing to do with the screen, so they'll fix it, but when the phone was returned to the customer it was no longer rooted.
Is sending my phone to HTC my only option because i can still boot into to recovery and get into the bootloader and all that. i just want to know that HTC is my last resort
If your bootloader says S-ON, and your recovery is not CWM then you're good to go.
Visionary works for exactly what it is supposed to do. Temp root. Then you can achieve perm root with the various methods depending on your build #. It perm roots on earlier phones - so I hear, as well. The OP hit the perm root button without s-off. Easier to find warnings about that could be instructive, but the mods can't take the visionary instructionals off the forum. ABD is not exactly a friend to the G2. There are a number of things the OP can try. If they really release the update - that should do it. Thread-rom manager, rom backup, and red exclamation point. Etc.

Actually they can take them off the forums, and even if that was true, they can close the threads and let them fall into oblivion. They do all of xda a gigantic disservice by being so irresponsible and letting that junk linger so noobs can brick there phone within the freaking day of buying it. Its outrageous and I'm not gonna listen to any other arguement.

There's a perfectly good guide on XDA Wiki for permrooting the G2, and other sub forums on XDA for each device to root. There's no need for Visionary at this point. There will always be alternative ways to root phones.
Well,
I was using the word "can't" for emphasis. I suppose in some ways "don't" would have been more accurate. Let me try again. Feel free not to listen. I will always be grateful to Modaco. Here's why: I had a G1 (gf has it now -running froyo at the moment), TouchPro 2 (my Dad is using it now - so not that modified, but it was); I finally get a G2 and I can't do anything with it. I sat there for 24 hours trying to root it before I called 1 of the 2 guys in Austin on Craigslist offering flashing/rooting/unlocking services. Sat with him for 12 hours. On the plus side he did show me how to set up ABD. On the other hand lot of time with an irate stranger who won't even take the money he is so upset with himself.
Finally figured out if you use the root no abd required method twice (on everything but the G2s with Gingerbread) you can sneak by barely and downgrade etc. Visionary provided the temp root.
I wasn't lucky enough to get a G2 on the first day. I was in the same boat as the folks with Gingerbread. Thought I had waited too long. My parting words from the professional flashers place. But Visionary and the automated scripts for Gfree saved me. Should the perm root button contain a warning that you need s-off first? Sure. But developers have little incentive to update when criticism is so harsh. I have a feeling every root method is indebted to Visionary. If I had a "ginger" G2 I would be praying they were working on a fix.

I like to think I am rather educated in regards to how to root and all that. I just got my replacement Evo today and of course it is updated to 2.3.3. So I can't use unrevoked, but I was hoping to flash over to a older backup I made on 2.2 on my old phone.
Except, when I do the whole hold the volume down + power button and eventually choose recover, all that happens is a image of a phone and a exclamation point appears and it never leaves here.
I know in order for me to be able to use ClockwordMod I need to root the phone, which can't happen on 2.3
So what are my options? How do I flash over my old rom???? Even if it doesnt let me get back to 2.2 its still better than redownloading all my apps.

so there is no way possible for me to recover without rooting?
I still have to do update the drivers on the phone (device manager, installing the unrevoked drivers...unless i need to be rooted for this as well)
so even then I still cant use the recovery option? whats the point of it? HTC doesnt want you rooting, hence 2.3 being stock on Evos, but yet they include the recovery option on their phones which you seemingly cant use...unless...you...root? im confused. Unconfuse me please

Rooting doesnt exactly let you use recovery.
The stock recovery from HTC is basically nothing.
When you do full root. It gives you the ability to install unsigned apps. That is what s-off means (security off). So the bootloader doesnt check to see what your installing is signed by HTC.
So therefore.
1. Root
2. Install custom recovery.
Now some automated root apps (unrevoked) do the whole process for you.
If you root by adb. You would be rooting and installing a custom recovery seperately, if you actually knew what the adb codes were and not just following a tutorial.
You can root and still have no recovery. Root doesnt mean custom recovery. They are two seperate things.
So even though the recovery option is there it is unuseable. Until you root. Then you can get a custom recovery...hope this helps

At this time no. I think its more of a way to get you to buy the next thing from them. If devs keep making the phone feel fresh and new, how long would you wait to upgrade(just my take on it). I believe recovery is there for their developers and carriers developers(to add their bloat) again just my take. Give the devs here sometime and i'm sure they'll find a way to get root back.

i truly hope so. ive been spoiled by CM7. I like to run juicedefender ultimate on CM7 during my work days where im not around a plug and ill be at over 85% on a 15 hour day. on stock HTC 2.3 with the same juicedefender settings running on the same 15 hour day, im down to 50% or lower sometimes. i can live without root for now. the biggest negative is I just cancelled the Sprint hotspot because of CM7.
can you even run the hotspot on stock sense if you aren't paying for it like you could on a root?

Hello everyone, I just got a problem last night. I tried to permroot my G2 using Visionary+ and once it rebooted it got stuck on the HTC loadup screen. I have done a factory reset and have gone into recovery mode but when I do go into recovery mode, I get a droid phone with an exclamation mark in the middle and it just stays there.
I don't know many details about the phone other than what I can tell you from the HBOOT menu, I'd rather avoid sending it back in for a warranty repair unless I can just get to the normal screen where I can unroot it, I don't care who you are I just need help on what to do because I have no idea :\
Thanks guys, you're my last hope >:|
First off, this is why you DO NOT use visionary. Well documented to brick phones:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1025135
You can start off trying to recover your brick by looking at this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=842495
You might as well have written that in chinese, I have no idea what any of this means. it's S-ON and it won't go into recovery mode.
Walk me through what I need to do..? :\
So I had a thought, if I could use a friends Android which, Idk the model to, but could I just uninstall Visionary from there? Would that do anything at all?

You really need to research before you try to root your phone. Like a lot of research.
and when you brick it, you need to research to try and un-brick it. This stuff is easy, but its tedious, and if you're not ready to deal with hours of trying to fix your phone, you shouldn't been rushing into rooting.
All of the info is in that thread. Dozens of people have followed it and recovered their semi-brick.

Agree with everything you said. One click roots can be dangerous and tempting, as they lure people to an easy method, without having to learn the basics . . . and that's how the trouble starts. Especially when the one click root method is known to result in possible semi bricks.
If anybody wonders why HTC tried going to locked bootloaders, or constantly trying to increase the security against rooting, situations like this is why. People not wanting to make an effort to root by proper methods, or fix their mistakes, and claiming a "warranty issue".
I am having a hard time to choose "to root or not root".
is there a easy way to root?
i just want ad-block and maybe wireless tether, still worth it?
i used to own a HTC DInc, flashing this roms and that roms, and ended up cm7 as my last rom, none of those are stable. beside roms and kernels, what's the advantage of rooting my GN?
Yep... I got rid of all the bloatware, was able to adjust the screen brightness for the automatic setting, and all the things you mentioned.
It is quite simple. To get you started...
1) Download Android SDK and drivers
2) Start phone in bootloader (hold volume +/- down while powering up)
3) Go to your C:/program files (x86)/Android/Platform-Tools folder within a command prompt
4) Type in Fastboot oem unlock
You're now unlocked... Now...
1) Download Superboot http://android.modaco.com/topic/348161-30-nov-r3-superboot-rooting-the-gsm-lte-galaxy-nexus/
2) Put phone back into bootloader as shown above
3) Run the BAT file
I don't know about others, but after waiting 20 minutes, I did a battery pull because it was stuck on the Google screen. I then had root after booting.

here is the thing about a "nexus" device. It is intended for developing. it is very easy to unlock and re-lock the bootloader. and just the same to root. if ever you want to return to a stock state the images are available from aosp.
why anyone wouldn't root/unlock on a nexus is beyond me.
so the answer to you question is it doesn't matter. because a couple quick command lines will fix everything
Yes
Unlock the Bootloader
Root your phone
Get the WIFI tether app.
Its worth it. That single feature alone made me figure out how to do it. Its really scary honestly, when the words "flashing" come into play, i think about the bad BIOS flash i did at work...but I then watched this video: ?v=ZtKoaPEXzHs[/url] and it didn't seem so bad. So I did it.
The other things you can do with a rooted phone aren't that interesting to mainstream ppl. I'll include myself in that bunch, but wifi app is the one shining perk you get when you root.
thanks everyone, I rooted . the reason i am scared because I brick my first HTC DInc when battery pull on radio flashing haha.

I also rooted my GNex because of my old app databases, saved games etc.
Titanium Backup is THE reason for me to have root!
Adfree is also nice, but to be able to restore every app you had is just a banger!
I have not rooted my phone yet and don't see the need right now but that may change in the future.
Pretty much rooted my previous phones out the box but that was more to get near a stock rom with no carrier bloatware and as there is no bloatware on the Nexus that requirement for me to root has been removed.
I hope there are more kernels for stock roms.

I don't understand your post - Kernels are independent of ROMs. The only limitation right now is that most are built for 4.0.3 and the 4.0.3 OTA hasn't been pushed yet. Or is that what you mean?
I would live to root but man I don't understand any of this stuff. Its not as easy as the d3 was for rooting. I dont know what and where those files would be located and what they are. Is there a super newb version. I need something that does a step by step. Like where are this files that you talk about are they on the phone.

in my opinion, if there isn't anything compelling you to root at the moment, i'd wait until that time. there will eventually come a rom, feature or app that will motivate you.
all the high horse talk about what a "nexus phone is about..." is irrelevant because you paid for a device to do and not do what you please with it.
Sertainly I love my custom rom.

Hi there,
First time android user here, i've always used iPhones. The first thing that really annoyed me is the fact over 5GB of my 16GB is in use when i bought it. There is quite some crap on it like "Child Modus" which uses over 50MB of disk space, and i would like to remove it.
I've heard this can be done by rooting my phone... but this voids my warranty right? If thats what need to be done i'm okay with it, as long as i can always return to full stock (including the boot loader). So how do i root my phone? Its an unlocked one, international.
