screen brightness issue/overheating - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

i've had my phone since launch and ever since my screen brightness gets automatically reduced due to overheating.
At first, the screen will dim itself ever so slightly. After a few seconds later, it returns to normal brightness and it repeats itself.
Eventually, i notice upper half of my phone as well as the screen itselft getting really hot and the brightness dims permanently.
I usually keep my brightness setting at the highest level but when i go into the menu to increase the brightness setting back to highest, it tells me the brightness is reduced due to overheating. only way to increase the brightness back to highest is to turn off the screen and let it cool down for a few min.
whenever this happens im usually browsing the internet for no longer than 10 min before this kicks in. i seriously dont think im using too much cpu by browsing forums for this super phone to be overheating.
i've read other post regarding auto brightness feature causing issues but i have not enable this feature on my phone. and its kinda hard to believe that i have to lower my brightness to prevent it from overheating.
anyone having this issue? man i'd hate to return this phone and start from scratch. tia

I would love to hear more about this...My experience matches yours perfectly. Does everyone's phone do this? If enough people say no I'm going to get a new one...it is absurd. I got those phone almost primarily for it's beautiful screen which I can't see at full brightness for more than a minute or two!?? fnck that.

Is it possible for us to get a brand new replacement unit even if your 15 day return period is over? Assuming that other users are not experiencing the same problem.

Mine does this as well, I think it's some kind of fail safe if your phone is running hot cranking up the brightness is just going to add more heat so they limit it while it's running hot. Once it cools down then it will allow it again

I have this same issue, I have to recharge above 30 percent to get the point where I can max the brightness up again

Hmmmm... guess im not the only one with this issue and hoping that it is addressed in the future update. However, it seems odd that no one brought this up? Could it be that there are only a few of us that are affected? If so, im beginning to think that this is a hardware defect?

Ive had the phone since day one. I am not having this problem. The only time it ever gets noticeably warm is when using the phone for extended periods while charging. And this is not hot like some people are reporting. I would try exchanging the phone.

Mine did this the other day, I normally have auto brightness on but I was showing a photo so i went to turn it off and crank the brightness up but it didn't let me. I pulled the battery for 10 seconds and it let me do it.

I think alot people are not experiencing this issue because they either keep the auto brightness feature turned on or keep the brightness setting at a low level. I dont wanna exchange my phone if im gonna have the same issue. What can i do?

You may be on to something.... I rarely ever have my screen at 100%, mostly because its just too bright for me.
Although, I did watch 2 hours of video (1 hour from the SD card, one streaming from Netflix) at full brightness, and never had a heat issue. A little warm, maybe, but certainly not hot.

[Q] Phone into pocket = standby?

A friend of mine has a Motorola Razr which automatically switches to standby (screen off) when it's put into his pocket.
Does anyone know if there's a way for us HOX users to accomplish this?

Man, I feel like an advertisement recently, but I feel like this would be something not too hard to accomplish with Tasker. If light levels drop to near nothing and the proximity sensor detects a very short distance, like the phone is in your pocket, it turns the screen off. I'd also put in an if for disabling this function when you're on a call, just because it already does it and I don't know if it'd interfere. You could test it though.
Battery use might be a concern if it polls the sensors too much. Would have to look into it.
Edit: I set up a simple test for this on my Infuse, and I got it to work, but it doesn't work instantaneously. The sensors are only polled every x number of seconds, but I don't know what that number is exactly. I suspect it shouldn't take more battery than it would if you had auto brightness on, and with auto brightness on, it's probably already updating the value, if it isn't always anyway (I want to say it does regardless), so I guess battery shouldn't be a concern. I guess it turning off with a couple of seconds of delay is still better than it staying on for 30+ seconds.

Reports of Dimming On Over Heating

Just read the review by PC Mag, and I have to admit it's making me a little hesitant to pick up the phone Sunday. Essentially when the phone gets warm it auto dims the screen. I wish he posted more details about the issue.
I've been jazzed about the phone for a couple of weeks now, but it does have some drawbacks for me right out of the box. The non-removable battery, the lackluster camera, and lack of micro-sd slot on the Sprint version. Still I could live with those issues, by and large, but the dimming issue reported by PC Mag has me to the point where I'm reconsidering buying in.
I'm hoping people who get this phone over the weekend weigh in with their experience on the issue.
Here's the relevant excerpt:
"One big problem: I did most of my testing with the screen brightness set to maximum. I noticed it dip considerably after about 10 or 15 minutes of benchmarking. When I checked on it in the phone's Settings, I saw the brightness level had dropped down to 66%. I tried to turn it back up, and got the message, "Unable to brighten more due to high temperature. Try again later." I encountered this issue on multiple occasions. Especially when using processor-intensive applications like games, the top half of the phone becomes increasingly warm. LG claims it has not encountered this issue, but two test units as well as our AT&T model of the phone did the same thing."

Who keeps their phone on max brightness? 66 is twice what my brightness is set on :/
But yes, I will agree that it's an unusual thing to force user to take those measures.

Totally agree. That's why I'm sort of waiting with anticipation for people to get them in their hands and report their experience with that issue. I've got my current phone set to like 30% most of the time, so this is workable, but there are times when I need that brightness maxed out for a significant length of time.
I'm hoping the reports are good. I really want this phone.
If the phone overheats I'm going to ask Sprint to cover the restocking fee when I return it. On the contrary, that's the only review that has mentioned overheating that I could find though.

Yeah but they said it happened with three test sets, with both the AT&T and the Sprint hardware versions. Looks like it dims by design given the warning message they received. That tends to indicate LG knows they run hot on heavy usage.

That's not good news, I'm going to stay optimistic with it since it's already on the UPS truck and if it overheats on any normal use I will return it as defective. In all fairness, I've never had a smartphone that didn't overheat, especially during tethering.
Dimming Display
received mine yesterday and I was able to recreate the pc mag error. It wasn't that hot either, wasn't doing much. I'm a bit concerned.

I haven't encountered the error yet, it runs a bit warm, but I keep my screen at about 36% to save battery.
My screen brightness is at 40% and looks great.
People have to understand the powerful hardware runs hotter. It's physics and unfortunately, unlike PC, cars etc, they can't simply install a better cooling system so they use software to tone things down when things get heavy. Also, it's not "overheating" unless the phone acts erratically. Running "hot" does not qualify as "overheating".

More like running warm, I think people might be over reacting a bit whenever this issue is brought up.
This user is reporting random reboots. Also, the sprint rep recommended they pull the battery for about a minute... on the lg optimus g.... with the fixed battery door.

Sorry to hear that. No problems yet. The camera is disappointing, but everything else is working well. The dimming issue is an issue. I was out taking pics to test the camera and needed more brightness but the phone was locked at like sixty three percent or maybe forty three i cant remember.

Buzzing Sound When Brightness Is Brought Down to 15-25%

Edit: The problem isn't an auto-brightness issue at all. The buzzing sounds happen when the brightness is lowered to around 15-25% (like when one puts the headset next to his or her head). 15-17% seem to be when the whining is the loudest. The issue can be reproduced by manually adjusting the brightness to those levels. Has anyone else had any similar problems?

My phone is pretty much perfect save for a buzzing sound when auto-brightness is active and my screen is on. It's very noticeable when I'm making a call. I'm assuming that it's coming from the camera. In most cases, I have auto-brightness disabled. However, I am worried that the buzzing sound is a symptom of a much larger problem that I have yet to run into.
Is this a widespread problem, or did I pick up another lemon (this is my second unit as my first one had some dead pixels)? I am still within my 14 days, so if I have a bad phone, I'd like to return it while I still can. However, if this is a widespread problem, I'm OK with it since I can live with manual brightness...

mine doesn't do it
i have a humming sound whenever the screen is on. %30-33 auto.
I have the same problem between 19% adn 28%. Irritating humming/buzzing screen noise.

Display gradually dims

So far I'm liking my G7 but I have noticed that although I have auto brightness turned off, the display dims over time (plugged in or running on battery) requiring me to jack up the slider. An ideas?

I've literally watched mine move around but I do have auto brightness turned on. I'll turn it off and let you know if I have the same experience. It could possibly be a bug, I would factory reset if possible.
same happens here
I forget which phone it was, might've been my Nexus 5X (an LG phone), but even with Ambient Brightness and Auto Brightness settings turned off, the screen would subtly dim itself due to internal temperature. It was subtle, yet definitely noticeable when the same content was displayed on the screen for a while. I wouldn't doubt that's what you're seeing here. Do you notice this happening after prolonged use or when the phone is getting warm? I haven't noticed it with my phone yet but I'll keep an eye on it. I don't run with Auto brightness to begin with because it stinks on this phone.

Now that you mention it, it does occur when I'm playing games

Yeah. My guess is the kernel decides to dim the screen slightly before throttling the CPU or GPU. This way performance isn't impacted while still reducing heat. The screen itself produces a bit of heat but the real concern here is probably the battery, which will get quite toasty while gaming.

For those that experience this effect while playing games, it's actually a changeable option. Go to Settings/General/Gaming and untick Break Time.
Otherwise I don't know yet. :|

Question Dimming issue

Hi, is this issue still a problem? After some time during gaming you are not able to get the backlight over 50% like on this video:
Dimming
Or it have been solved by the latest updates and you are able to set maximum brightness even after half of an hour of gaming?
I think the dimming issue has been significantly reduced and fixed with the latest firmware.
It still dims but not by much, you might not even notice it at all depending on how much you're into the game or how sensitive your eyes are to light change.
Dimming is fine for me. I think its really feature not an issue for thermal purposes.
I'm more worried in touch delay issue. They marketed this device with high touch response and how come it would have an issue in the hands of customers.
Two words: Android 11.
