The epic touch came with usb cable, at first I had problems mounting my phone to my iMac... My computer wouldn't pull up my phone.
I switched to HTC cable and my computer is finding my phone and I'm able to move stuff around.
Anyone else with this problem?
Also, I'm about to root... Which cable should I use (htc shows up on iMac or ET4G cable which still don't show), taking precautions to avoid bricking my phone. I read not to use htc cable to root... Confused here...????

I know with the Samsung cable the only way my Mac can see it is if I have USB Debugging on...maybe try that if you don't have it on already.

Really? I don't think I have anymore HTC cables to test it out. Thats the only way I can get my Samsung cable to work. Wish I could help more.

I had no issues connecting with adb or mounting the sd card when I had an evo. I have several usb cables I used. Now with my e4gt it seems I can only use the included usb cable to make connections to my computer. Any idea why this would be?

My guess would be that, coincidentally, each and every other USB cable you've tried is damaged in some way.

But they worked fine with my evo...and all broke simultaneously the day I got my e4gt?
Charging over USB works fine no matter the cable or the connection but it no longer will show up in Windows on any PC as a device. I tried flashing roms, changing cables, and doing the usb fix with Terminal listed in the sticky but it doesnt connect or will it know it's connected to a PC.
Can the port be broken so data no longer works but charging does?
its not the phone its the computer, try another computer

I have tried 3 which is why I wonder if my phone is broken, but it charges fine.
On all PCs the charge light comes on the phone with no problems but with all of them none of them detect a USB device being plugged in.,
Even in recovery if I do a USB-MS mount nothing happens.
Can the usb port break so that it charges with no issue but wont connect to a PC?

Does the phone recognize your sdcard?

I think the solution to your problem can be found in this fix
The USB port on my Evo 4G will charge but won't show up as as a device on my laptop. If I hold the USB cable at an angle, though, it does show up. I think mine is busted, maybe that's the case for yours.

Yup. Last night I completely wiped it and had the phone format and set it up fresh.

Do you think the cable is busted or the phone? I have tried multiple cables on multiple PCs and nothing happens.
So then it is possible for the phone to be unable to connect but still charge fine?

Have you tried mounting when in Recovery?
It really sounds like your cable is weird. The power lanes are on the edges for USB, meaning that the port on the phone is probably physically fine. The cable, however, is vulnerable to damage on any one of the four wires.
If nothing works, then perhaps something internal is busted. What do you need to transfer from your computer? Perhaps you can do it by connecting to your computer through WiFi for mounting the SD card and adb?
Its your USB port on you phone, theres 2 pins or smoething broken inside your phone thats causing the problem. I had the same problem on my Evo were it wouldnt connect as a storage device and would go into car dock mode. I took it to sprint and showed them the problem and they replaced my phone. As long as you dont have any physical damage such as the screen being cracked you should be fine and they should replace it free of cost.
Make sure that your cable is not one of those charge only, car charger type cables. Typical car charging cables don't transfer data.

Yeah, that's pretty much it. If I wiggle it just the right way the computer will see something but it will go away as fast as it shows up. Doubt Sprint will do anything as the phone is a few years old, I dropped the protection plan, and it's rooted to heck.
I'll just keep it running until this fall and upgrade when the new Nexus line comes out.
Hopefully.
The phone charges fine but when connected to a computer it doesn't recognize that it is. It isn't rooted or anything it isn't running a custom rom. has anyone had this issue? has my micro usb port simply worn out?
I had a Nexus 4 that exhibited the same problem. I believe the micro usb simply can not endure the repetitive insertion and exertion of the usb cable. The mini usb standard was much more robust, at least physically.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
look in the charging port to see if there is any gunk in there. clean it out if there is

I agree, micro USB sucks and mini USB isn't that much bigger the first phone to use mini USB can have all my money

I have the same problem.
I have tried a different port and computer as well.
I used the same cord for the wall charger and connecting to the PC.
When I connect it to the wall charger, it works fine.
However, when I connect it to the PC, nothing happens.
The phone won't even recognize that it's being charged.
It won't even show a message...
Anyone have a solution or know why?
Hello,
When plugging my HTC One M8 into my laptop, about every 30 seconds there is the sound of a USB being plugged out and then plugged back in, and then the typical windows 8 "what do you want to do with this device" notification. I dont think its a laptop problem because my USB memory sticks etc work completely fine. I've tried with all the USB ports, both 2.0 and 3.0.
Any ideas as to what to do to troubleshoot?
Thank you.

I have tried with the cable that came with the M8, and also the cable that came with my old Desire Z
1. Uninstall the drivers for HTC m8 from device manager , accept to delete all drivers and restart you laptop. After restart reconnect your phone and fresh install your phone. Use your original cable.
Sounds like bad cable, bad USB port on pc, or port on device is damaged. Rule out the first 2 first. Try another pc too. If not, probably your device port unfortunately.
I've seen a couple other reports of this happening on Win 8 (8.1 specifically?); and bad port or cable did not seem to be the cause. Don't know if a solution was ever found.
I've had this problem with some cables. An old Treo Pro cable I have does this, as well as a generic 3rd party cable too. The genuine HTC cable works fine as does a 3rd party flat cable I have. I always forget about it and spend 2 hours trying to figure out why the blasted thing kept disconnecting, then I remember and use my trusty OEM cable and all is well...
Hi. I wanted to flash Oreo RUU and root but I cannot connect the phone to my laptop except for charging. I get a message saying "USB device not recognised". I've tried 2 cables (HTC and anker) 3usb ports but to no avail. I've tried installing drivers through HTC sync but it doesn't work. I've tried to connect in bootloader, recovery, and download mode but same problem. Can anyone kindly help me? Thanks.

Any way to test that?
If it does not recognize in PC try with an otg cable and pendrive. If it also doesn't work then it could be the connector.

Hmm I guess I'll try to find a USB C otg. Thanks for the advice. Didn't think of that.
is fast charge still working? on my htc10 the usb connector died after 15months and it started with fast charge not working and the pc connection was very unstable. In my case it was warranty and got repaired.
