[Q] Framework-Res.apk & SystemUI.apk - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

Okay so I'm running androids erection v3.1 and tried to do a little bit of theming on my own. I pulled both framework-res.apk and systemUI.apk to my laptop then using 7 zip opened up the archives and extracted the drawable hdpi folders to my desktop, edit the images I wanted and put them back in the proper folders and updated the archive. Then i put both apks on my sd card and signed using zipsigner 2 then moved them back to where they belong and rebooted. I got nothing but force closes can anyone help?

Hey man, unles you are changing anything OTHER than pngs, you DO NOT have to extract the pngs. Just drag and drop what you want. Ie pngs you edited. In other words, Open frame work with 7zip, take the pngs you've edited and make sure the name and file exstension matches what you are about to replace and drop it in the proper file OVER the existing png. This works for JUST pngs. Then close 7zip and you are done. No other special commands needed...

Alright thanks ill try this

Did you edit any .9 png's? If yes, you need to draw the patches and recompile them before injecting back into the apks. That is most likely why you got FC's.

Didn't even think about this man, ill check it out
Edit: I just checked and none of the images I edited were .9 pngs. They were mostly status bar icons

You have to change the permissions of both the System UI & Framework apks to look like this before pushing to their respective places. I use Root Explorer for doing so.

Also if your rom is not deoxeded and your putting a regular theme into it, (odexed) it won't work... the rom and theme have to match... deoxeded to deoxeded and odexed to odexed (odexed would be the full Rom. Just change the pngs in the rom and then reload the rom). Hope this helps...

So I can switch the images from inside the rom with the images I want then flash the rom?

You must move the items to the system folder before u can change permissions. If you get denied for trying to move the apks make sure the system folder is mounted as Read/Write in the top right corner of Root Explorer. When you have correctly did this, you will see Mount R/O in the top corner. Now change the permissions. You should get a "permission change successfully" message on screen. Now copy the apk to it's respective folder & reboot. I recommend doing one at a time.

I did it! I just switched out my images with the ones in the rom and flashed it and it worked . Thanks to everyone that helped

I am off to try the same thing... All I want to do is change a few images so hopefully I can handle this

use rootexplorer to copy your twframework.apk to your phne's sd card.then copy it to your pc and open it using winrar or winzip.then replace the corresponding files in the folder "drawable-hdpi" with the provided ones.then copy the twframework.apk back on your sd card and then to system/app using rootexplorer.
rename your twframework.apk to twframework.apk.bak first to have a backup.

Tutorial: Signal bar icon mods

Hello all, I have posted a tutorial like this about a week ago but i would like to explain more in depth and post updates of what i will be doing. Here I will explain how to mod/change the signal bar icons with the file I have uploaded. I will post more as time gos on, but for now ill start off with one file. This is for the virgin mobile wfs version i will be posting more for the gsm version. People that have sense based roms that would like a diffrent look or color rather then stock htc would probably like this. (I no some may not)This is for virgin mobile version, the png imgs are already named and ready to be dropped in its designated folder (for virgin mobile verison), those that have the gsm version can download these imgs but will have to rename them to what there phone files are i will upload later and rename for gsm version
*Steps for virgin mobile/cdma version*
1. using root explore or es file manager, copy and paste you system.ui to your sd card
2. connect phone to pc and open system.ui using winzip
3. once opened, go to res, drawable mdpi
4. since the new signal bar will only have 4 bars not 6 you will have to delete these files inside drawable mdpi to make the new icons work- "cdma_sys_6signal_0" "cdma_sys_6signal_5" "cdma_sys_6signal_6"
5. download the zip file you wish and extract it to your desktop
6. select all the img inside the extracted zip folder and drop into drawable-mdpi
7. it will ask to over right, click yes for all
8. save system.ui in your sd card, close winzip and disconect phone from pc
9. from root explore or file manager move system.ui back to system/app and click yes to over write
10. your phone will foreclose, dont panic reboot and your done!
*If you want to remove the vibrate, gps and no sound icon from the status bar apply this step in number 4 (this is optional), delete these files.*
For vibrate-"stat_sys_ringer_vibrate"
For sound off-"stat_sys_ringer_silent"
For gps on-"sym_gpsone_0_sprint"
For gps off-sym_gpsone_3_sprint"
*Click thanks if you like!*
*Here is a shot of mine with no vibrate icon, gps and sound with cyan signal and data icons*

I like your cyan icons, very nice!
I'd advise against deleting the files though. It'll work but if you ever need to decompile and recompile the app, it could cause problems. Apktool will expect those files to be there.
You could make them transparent or mess around with the smali to stop them being displayed in the first place.
I haven't seen this thread in so long! I forgot about it but thanks for the info! Usually now I just make the icons transparent instead of deleting

If you feel like being a perfectionist, you could always try stopping the icons from popping up to begin with.

[APP] Mms.apk with different colors

Hi all,
I thought I'd share my modded Mms.apk with you. This was pulled from Calk's latest ROM. It should, however, work with any EL29 ROM. The only modifications are colors of the message bubbles, pulled from this MMS app. I tried using the app, but I was getting file compression errors when sending images, so I just modded the original Mms.apk slightly.
AS ALWAYS - YOU DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK
Install via adb (Windows):
1. Connect your phone to PC
2. Make sure USB debugging is enabled
3. open command prompt in the same folder as Android SDK or make sure you have PATH specified to it; place Mms.apk in the same folder
4. Type adb start-server at command prompt
5. Type adb remount
6. Type adb push Mms.apk /system/app
7. Type adb reboot
Once your phone reboots, you will have the new MMS.apk fully functional. You may have to re-add the Messaging link to the bottom bar.
If you have ROOT EXPLORER, you can simply copy Mms.apk into your /system/app folder replacing the original file. Back it up first, though, if you want to revert back to it.
Enjoy.

Cant you just drop it on your SD card then navigate your phone using ES file explorer or root explorer and copy and paste it into the system/app folder replacing the one thats in there, then reboot to get it to work?
If I am incorrect please let me know before I make a fatal error.... lol
I can't speak for THIS apk, however I just took a mms.apk from another rom, did exactly as you described but also changed the permissions, and it works fine. Why don't you make a back up and give it a go.

You can get your own colors. For that you have to edit the message_bubble_xxx_.9.png files located in the res/drawable-hdpi directory inside the Mms.apk. These .9.png files are system-resizable PNGs that have to be edited with a special tool, like Draw9patch. If you google "how to edit .9.png files" you will find all sorts of tutorials and explanations.
Good luck.

[Q]Sense 1.0 theming issues

Hello all, I was wondering if someone more experienced with Sense 1.0 theming could help me out.
I'm trying to re-theme rosie from Jermaine's stock plus rom. I found the 8 pngs I need to edit and went to town on them. I placed the edited pngs into my htc.resources project folder (using apkmanager) and recompiled. I then flashed a from with the new HTC framework apk but Rosie would not load and kept force closing upon first boot.
I know there's an issue with my pngs, but what could it be? I'm a little curious as to how a simple image change could cause an application to crash. I retain the same dimensions and format (PNG) but I still get infinite crashes.
Is there a certain way I need to be saving the PNGs? Are there any other restrictions with how the images need to be? I know .9 patch images are insanely touchy with where pixels can and can't be, so is it a similar issue here? I'm not working with 9 patch images at all in this instance, so I am very confused. Do I have to edit some smali or XML files when I change image data?
I use Photoshop to do all my work and use the save for web and devices option. I leave the PNGs at 24-bits and take out all the metadata.
Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

If all your changing is images in an apk file you can just open (not unzip) the framework-res.apk file with 7-zip, navigate to the res\drawable-hdpi folder, and replace the images you want changed (drag and drop). Once done close 7-zip and push the edited framework-res.apk file to the phone.

So here's another question: if I want to edit 9 patch images, I do need to decompile, edit the 9 patch images correctly and recompile right?

Tutorials by Team MagioROM
All mods are specifically made for MagioROM but can easily be adapted to fit other sense5 roms with minimal changes. I will
continue to add more tutorials as I find the time and as I learn more.
Tutorial #1: Flashable boot animations.
What you will need to complete this tutorial:
1. 7zip or any file compression tool that is able to zip files without compressing them. I use 7zip.
2.Download this file to use as a template.Bootanimation.zip
Download the bootanimation.zip posted above. Extract this zip into whatever directory you like. There should be two folders: one called META-INF and another called "system". You do not want to touch the meta-inf folder. The files you are interested in editing are in system/customize/rescource and system/customize/CID.
Firstly we will edit the files in "rescource" folder. THere are two files in the rescoures folder one called "hTC_bootup_one.zip" and "hTC_downanimation.zip" Extract the "bootup" file into whatever directory you want. Inside you will find a file called desc.txt and a folder called android. Again dont touch the desc.txt file. The boot animaition images are in the android folder and are named in sequence: bootup_htc_one_00000.png,bootup_htc_one_00001.png,bootup_htc_one_00002.png........and so on.
You can then delete all images in the android folder and then copy whatever images (they must be in png format) you want to be your bootanimation into the folder. Rename your sequence of images, beginning with the first one in the exact naming sequence they were in before: bootup_htc_one_00000.png, bootup_htc_one_00001.png,bootup_htc_one_00002.png........and so on.
After all the images are renamed and everything is how you want it open 7zip and navigate to the folder where you extracted the boot animation. Select both the desc.txt file and android folder and click "add" in the 7zip toolbar. In the menu that pops up select compression level and choose "store". You can rename the file whatever you like and then hit "OK" After it is done rezipping you can copy the file file back to the bootanimation/system/customize/rescource folder overwriting the orginal "hTC_bootup_one.zip" with your new one, or if you changed the name, be sure to delete the original bootup.zip. IF you decided to change the name( most developers do and don't overwrite the original "hTC_bootup_one.zip") then navigate to the system/customize/CID folder. Open the "default.xml" file and scroll down till you find this line:
<BootConfiguration>
<BootAnimation animation="/system/customize/resource/hTC_bootup_one.zip" audio="/system/customize/resource/Startup_3_Sekunden_4.mp3" audiostart="TMO" />
</BootConfiguration>
Change the "hTC_bootup_one.zip" to whatever name you decided to name you zip or if you didn't change the name you can leave it like it is. After making your edits you can save the file and close it. Afterwards you may rezip system and META-INF folders with 7zip and remember to change the compression level back to normal. Copy the bootanimation.zip to your phone and flash through twrp.
Congratulations you have made your very first flashable bootanimation!!

That is a theme not a bootanimation.

That is a theme not a bootanimation. It is for the HTC ONE X international and not for our phone. THere is no bootanimation even included in that. Your phone will definantly not boot after flashing that.
By your signature I see you have the international one x. You shouldn't be posting in this forums as its for a totally different device. You are supposed to be here http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1533

I am the lead developer for MagioROM and most of our themes are exclusive to our rom. On another note Im not the themes creator. You should ask him if he's willing to make a theme for whatever rom you're running.
Cheers mate
