whaaaaatss up guys!! - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hey guys i just traded my evo 3d for the epic 4g , im addicted to phones and flashing. I trade phones like every week whats the best and famous rom here? if you dont mind asking.

They are ALL good. Go into the Development forum and read through and pick some and try. Each one has different features. Anything else is just opinion.

I tried all the GB roms, but the rebooting and general unstableness sent me back to Froyo. I am having great results with SRF 1.2. YMMV.

I recommend these:
SyndicateRom Frozen(flash kernel immediately after this rom)
ReVolted ROM
Urban Regeneration.

im pretty new to this stuff so please forgive me if i sound a little ignorant. however i must say im catching on pretty quick thanks to this site and others like it and the people who contribute to them. so to you all i thank you! anyway back to the topic. ive only used 3 different rooted/custom roms. omj's, cm6.1.2, and currently fresh 3.5.0.1. omj's was pretty solid after he got the bugs worked out. cm6.1.2 would have random reboots, force closes, and im pretty sure it killed my sd card. i havent had any issues with fresh 3.5.0.1 yet but ive only been using it for a day. to be fare when i was running omj and cm6 i was a little more clueless, i didnt have nand unlocked, i was using rom manager for everything(which i was figuring out how to use as i went), and my recovery was messed up. ive heard that fresh is the most stable rom out right now, i dont know if thats true but im liking it so far. all the info that ive found about it thus far looks good. as far as being able to add themes or modify im in the process of learning how to do that at the moment. i dont really understand it completely but ima give it a shot. a little direction if somebody would please be so kind...I would like to become knowledgeable enough to start building my own custom roms. ive found guides on how to do so for beginners and i will start expearimenting with that soon. however of all the info ive been able to find and educate myself with i havent found much on kernels such as building your own custom, manipulating stock, etc. anybody know of a good resource? or should i not be worrying my little brain with this at this moment in my training? once again thanks to all!!!
I have a question for you Evo users. I have a HD2 that I flashed CM7.0 to, been loving it ever since (fast, battery lasts FOREVER). Got 2 guys i work with that have Evos with stock ROM and get TERRIBLE battery life. Is there a CM7 ROM for Evo...yes I did search and didnt get anything. Or if not, what is a good rom for them to use that will give better battery life? Thanks for the help.

Kernel question?

I recently just rooted my wife's evo. She finally let me. So I was checking out the evo development to get a custom rom. My question is why does the evo have like so many choices for o e kernel? They have like bfs, the cfs and then subtypes of havs or havs nots. How come the epic doesn't have all these options? I'm just curious cause I was lost till I did some research on them. I thought I would just click on the kernel and there would be just one not like four different options. Thanks guys.

Most ROMs have custom kernels with them and there are also custom kernel choices. I have found the best kernel for performance and stability is Genocide. I use that kernel on top of Bonsai ROM. Lots of choices in the Development section.
Do you BONSAI?

Yes I am. I'm just curious as to why the evo kernels have all the different options of schedulers. Is it an htc thing or just different developers?
Sent From My Evo Killer!!
Different developers, but when I tried them on my Evo it didn't make a (noticeable) difference.
That's the difference between samsung vs htc. Htc has a far superior software platform. Samsung is totally different and harder.
Xobx what kernel are you using. I heard a lot of good stuff about netarchy kernels. I think I spelled it right. Also I see that a lot if the developers don't recommend overclocking for the evo.

Yep, hence the AOSP kernel
I checked over at the Evo forums the other day and found it overwhelming. I think our development section is actually better.
It is very overwhelming. I'm just about lost in it. The biggest problem is they just got a gb leak so there's a lot of new stuff going on.

Rom Selection / New Epic

Hey all!
My epic should be arriving early next week. Very excited to be retiring my samsung transform.
I've been a member sdx's haxsung community for a while and I am not new to the rooting/rom/customization process at all. I've even been toying with my own kernel.
However, the epic will be a new breed to me. So, I turn to you, the awesome xda community for guidance!
What rom/kernel/mod setup works best for you? Why? Awesome battery? Performance?
From reading this forum the past week in length I'm thinking of going with syndicate rom with the genoicide 1.4 ghz oc kernel.
Any dragons lay ahead?
Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance to the community, and to the devs. Look forward to working with you all very very soon (once this friggin phone gets to nj from texas)

Kernel..
Posted by Mr. Z's Epic 4G via Tapatalk
I swear by the Genocide kernel and anything put out by Rodderik. He's had many "firsts" around here including overclocked Froyo kernel, dynamic overclocking and most recently put out the 1st (and only to my knowledge) dual boot capable kernel. Some of the other kernels floating around were forked from his earlier code too if memory serves...
As far as ROMs go there are several good ones, but I use my own creation so I really can't comment on any in particular.
Welcome to the community!

+1 on this setup!
I've had good luck with Syndicate Rom Frozen 1.1.1 and later.
I've also had good luck with Bonsai 4.0 (set it up on a friends phone).

Along with this:

and havent had any issues what so ever. I'm on the EF02 ROM with the EF10 Modem. I'm currently 15 hrs 32 min on the battery and still at 67%
Welcome. I used to be at haxsong as well. Took you awhile if you where still on the Moment?
I've never used anything other than Bonsai ROMs. I'd skip 4.1 and go straight for V5 Beta 13. Very stable, fast and cutting edge with Netflix working, CRT animation, ect....
U'd be all set for when official Ginger comes down the road soon...

Depends on what kind of phone you have, if its a speed demon that can do 1.45ghz, or an undervolting beast that can take a -150mv across the table and get 36 hours. There are such a wide range of limits on these phones good luck finding out what yours can do.
Happy rooting but do play around with stock for like 20 minutes so you can have an idea of what these great devs have done with their badass rom/kernels.

I'm running this same setup as well and have been pleased with it. This is my first ROM and haven't found a reason to change. Phone is quicker than ever before with no forceclose issues and battery gets me through a full day (14 to 17 hours) on one charge with medium use (pushing 4 email accounts including work exchange account, facebook widget, some web browsing, text messaging, a few phone calls, a little angry birds or something).
I may at some point try other ROMs but for now I have no reason too.

Instructions please...

Hey yall. I'm currently on an EVO 4G. I just got my wife an epic 4G. She's been complaining about it lagging and just plain being slow. I'm familiar with flashing roms. Now I'm considering rooting her epic, but I'm a little confused on how to flash roms for the epic. Can anyone provide really good instructions on the process of flashing roms for the epic? Also a decent stable fast rom suggestion for the epic? Thanks in advance
