Hard bricked!! - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

Samsung epic won't boot past b/w samsung screen

I'm not sure if I'm posting in the correct place as this is my first time, so I apologize in advance if not. As my the title states I currently have a samsung epic 4g that will not boot past the samsung screen. The phone is not rooted and was running stock software. This phone also will not load a recovery menu as it will not boot past the samsung screen (and yes I'm aware of the redundancy). I have tried flashing older stock files using odin and I get a successful read with no errors, however when the phone resets post flash it will still not boot past the samsung screen.......PLEASE HELP I am at my wits end and open to suggestions. Thanks

Best I can say to you both is get a stronger cable if your not already using one and if you do have a cable other than the oem one then try leaving the battery out of the phone and hold the power button for about a minute to let the capacitors discharge then let it sit with the battery still out for about an hour :/ if you don't mind me asking, what happened to the phone before the issue started?
Try to Odin with the battery out.

Its possible to odin without the battery in? How does it populate the com and do you put it in download mode first then pull battery or just plug it and let it fly?

Thanks for the replies. I am trying "the duce's" advice first, no luck yet. She had went to take a picture of the "beautiful sky" last night in the hot tub and dropped it. I immediately took the battery out and when we got to our apartment took the hair dryer (on medium heat of course) to it. I then put the battery in and turned it on and it worked! Until she decided it needed a restart and it hasn't came on since...

Ok so I just tried to flash with odin with battery out I did put it in dowload mode after plugging it up....I removed the sd card as well. Now it boots to the samsung screen but the difference is that now the red led stays lit and the capacitive keys on the bottom row do as well. Any suggestions?

In that case, I would make sure every last bit of moisture is out of the casing by leaving it covered by rice over night.... it might be short circuiting :/

That's just odd :/ I honestly haven't a clue as to what may be going wrong.... at least you made some progress with the capacitive buttons lighting up and your notification led is lighting, usually that's a sign it'll boot
Get this....never got it to boot using odin or by completely discharging the capacitors but on a hunch changed out the lcd this morning and boots right up. What the heck, does anyone know why this worked? Haha very confused now even though the issue is resolved.

Must have been some kind of failure mode for hardware check then. I had the same thing with my airbag switch in my truck. Airbag light came on because the stupid bulb in the switch was blown. Almost cost me $35 for a switch instead of $1.50 at Radio Shack.

Has anyone been able to boot into safe mode(hold power button and capacitive menu button) after the phone not booting normally?
im rooted and finished flashing one of the roms, now it seems like its stuck on boot screen.... do i just leave it on? or do the whole flashing process over again?

You can try a reflash, restore your previous nand backup and try again, or Odin in a prerooted ROM and start from there. But if it goes more than a minute on SAMSUNG you are done. After flashing the S will take a few minutes (or whatever boot screen the ROM has) while it rewrites Dalvik cache.
My epic is doing the same thing. It was stuck in recovery menu when I pulled it out of my pocket. Rebooted and stuck on sanding screen.
I figured out what I did. I installed wrong kernal... noob for me lol

[psa] leaving recovery on too long results in hard brick

THIS HAS BEEN VERIFIED BY ME, AND JOKERSAX HAS TOLD ME ABOUT TWO OTHER DEVS WHO HAVE HAD SIMILAR RESULTS
This is a public service announcement saying that if you leave recovery (I left TWRP on overnight while restoring a nandroid) on too long, under certain circumstances not yet completely determined may lead your device to a hard brick. This has happened to 3 people so far, and want to avoid anymore issues with this.
For more details on what happened I was flashing a V5 test build of my rom im working on adding aroma too where I got another syntax error to fix. It was about 11:30 at night, so I just started restoring from a nandroid, threw the phone upside down, and knocked out. When I woke up the next morning I checked the device and it was off in recharge mode- nothing too big. I then tried to boot and it ended up flashing the notification light and softkeys repeatedly, and did nothing else. I was able to get it into download mode, but LGNPST kept timing out. Then after trying several times with it timing out it wouldnt get into download mode. I then tried to just get anything to light up, and left it on the charger for several hours, and then gave up that my device was hard bricked. No data remained. I had to go to best buy and wait about an hour and a half for them to get me a new device. I hope everyone can avoid this happening to their device. It is a slow, but sure death reported by a few people.
And to think I left my phone in recovery. for about 2 hours =x scared to even boot to recovery now

If youre phone boots it will be fine. I left it for about 8 hours or so.
You should make this a sticky
Ya i was taking my time with the aroma installer and noticed my phone heat up real quick! Had to turn my phone off after the rom booted. Close call!

This must be what happened to my first LGOG, I feel asleep running a backup. When I woke up it wouldn't boot. Thank goodness for Geek Squad coverage.
Does anyone know if this problem exists with clockwork too? I already fried a phone just making a simple backup using TWRP.
I'm using CWM now and made a backup and flashed a rom and my phone survived.

My phone also gets really got while in recovery mine also overheated exactly like the OP but mine came back to life I left it alone for a few hours then put it on the charger and finally got into download mode then recovery and restore. We definitely need to do something like timeout where after 10 minute the phone shuts off or something. Not sure it is possible but I like ranting lol

Only thing that could heat up the phone like that is the cpu core running at max.or spiking to max very very rapidly. Basically the soc with all the chipsests are not going into a sleep mode. I can see why all the data was gone and or damaged. I've seen something like this with other electronics.

I have not left recovery on long enough to experience noticeable overheating myself. I wish I knew how to fix the recovery myself though. Also as for making this a sticky (I read half the posts through email, and might have got this thread mixed up) mods are kinda inactive, so it will be hard for us to do.

I have heat up while playing games or streaming music, or leaving it at the lockscreen too long. Maybe undervolting it can fix it? IDR if joker's test kernel added it or not.
Happened to me to. But mine was adb push file to sdcard and lost power due to usb low charge and recovery turning phone into a glass top stove

Mine overheats after playing Beach Buggy Blitz for five minutes, in recovery. Too often really :/
These are reasons I always finish what I'm working on before I sleep! It drives my girlfriend nuts ha ha. But yes, the phone does get hot rapidly in recovery hotter than I have ever gotten it running any game or app

I think CM 10.1 killed my GS-III

Since December I've been running CM10 on my GS-III with little to no issues. I flash CM 10.1 mid January and even though it was an unstable nightly it was very stable.
Flashing the nightlies as they became available with no issues at all.
Then today my phone starts slowing down and froze up.
Keep in mind that I hadn't flashed a nightly in like a day or 2 do I had been using the past nightly as a daily driver.
When my phone decided to freeze I rebooted it and it booted just fine.
About 2 minutes in the screen goes black. Holding the power button it's unresponsive.
Now my phone is completely unresponsive to all button presses. I've tried the 3 button combos for recovery and download mode with no luck. I've even held the buttons for a full minute but nothing is working.
Is my phone dead or is there a possibility of resurrecting it?
Sent from my SGH-T959 using xda premium
Are you positive the battery hasn't died. That would be the first thing I would check. Even if it showed it was charging doesn't mean the battery is good. I'm not trying to be insulting either by asking this. I'm a equipment tech at a large semiconductor company and you wouldn't believe the number of times the fix was as simple as turning a breaker back on when another tech wanted to replace something major. #1 rule of troubleshooting: Is there power. #2 rule: Double check rule #1. Sounds silly, but it is the easiest thing to overlook. Good luck and I hope it's as simple as a battery.

No you're not insulting by asking that. I use to record music and when something wasn't wasn't working that's the first thing we asked and re asked.
Unfortunately I do believe I checked that out. When I plug in a charger it doesn't even show me a battery charging logo.
I have noticed that when I pull out the battery and connect the charger the led turns red.
I'll see if i can't swap batteries with one of my friends and see if that helps.

I have tried the 3 button combos for T-Mobiles variant of the GS-III with no luck either.... I even tried making a jig and didn't have much luck....
Next step is to buy a jig and see if that works
Thankfully I got a replacement GS-III from insurance. So I'm content... Also since I get to keep the other GS-III as well it feels even nicer.

I'm not sure I understand how a jig is going to help him when the phone won't turn on.
I would try another battery first. You said you were going to try this but I don't see where you confirmed that it wasn't the issue.
Hmm you could have ran into that now infamous mb crash and burn error although I'm not sure how since you were running aosp. Anyone else want to chime in?

If the battery truly died plugging it in won't be any help
Try another battery, I'm betting that's the issue. T-Mobile will have one or two on hand in store so you can try
Hopefully I will be able to get my hands on a spare battery to test this with as soon as I'm off work.

Now my next step is to attempt to hope that the jig will do something for my phone.

Flash STOCK or different ROM (Don't forget kernel too) think the issue is with the Cyanogenmod, mine did something similar, when screen went dark it took literally 5-10 Power button presses to wake the phone up, sometimes it wouldn't respond, other soft keys only would light up, Make backup, Wipe, install, check everything, that what I would do

The phone is dead. My friend's gs3 died suddenly one day while I just happen to be using it. I plugged in an otg plug and few minutes later the screen just went black. I was sure it was dead when I plug in a charger and there was no sign of life from the phone.
I don't know if you have to pay a deductible but Samsung is supposedly replacing galaxy s3 for free because there is a known defect which cause the motherboard to go bad. My friend's was a Verizon model and they just replaced it free.

Read through the brick thread, its exactly what happened to yours. In short, Acer uses a faulty memory module and it dies at random. Some say even out of warranty it may be possible to get Acer to repair it, the case needs elevated, but as you didn't originally purchase it, that wouldn't be particularly ethical, but worth a try if you want.

Major screen issues... please help

Okay, I have a sprint Samsung galaxy s3. Which was flashed over to straight talk. The phone has worked just fine for the past almost 2 years... then the other day, it wouldn't turn on....
I took battery out and let it sit for a bit, then it finally turned on. But when it did, the screen color was messed up. It was like really really light and it would flicker once in a while. Later on it was back to normal. Then once again the color went bad. The next day I woke up and there is no more picture at all really. I believe the phone still turns on, I just can't see anything now. It flashes like a green line down the screen once in a while and it vibrates everything it flashes.... I had the battery checked and it's fine...
So do I need a new lcd screen or something?? Or is there some other reason that it could be doing this?? Any help is appreciated. Thanks guys!!

Sorry to say it but it sure sounds like your screen is fried.
Can you get into your recovery? If so and you're able to see it properly, your ROM is the issue. If not, your screen is gone.
