If your like me you've been looking for a way to get a zune pass in Australia
Well here you go:
http://techin5.com/2011/05/how-to-buy-music-and-get-the-zune-pass-in-australia/2/
You will need a computer, a credit or debit card and a xbox.
I had to buy a zune pass via my xbox which meant buying xbox live for a month which set up auto renewal. I recommend setting your address of your new live account to one in Illinois. They have a law that requires you to be able to turn off auto renewal of xbox live online instead of calling them up
I had to reset my phone and change my locale in order to get the zune music market on my phone but you should be able to sync it from your zune software as well

I've done this before, though it never lasted a day on me because i already bought apps using my NZ live id including my games, so i had to revert back to my backup.
Advantages of this method are Zune Pass + US Marketplace, Bing Audio, Bing Vision DVD and CD covers scan. Cons are Bing Local Scout not working, even if its available, USD currency so you must need a credit/debit card (some credit/debit cards charge for currency conversion).
If you're a new windows phone user, then you're better off with this method if you want to have US features, otherwise you only get the features supported depending on your country.
Couldnt agree more. Im going to go back to my old account with my apps but keep the zune pass for my computer

lol yeah, my computer has zune pass and marketplace, whereas my phone doesnt. Microsoft should really make their services worldwide, not just US.
I've been on USA from the start. My xbox account has been on USA for the start as well (well over 2 years). Meaning everything is set to usa for me. Running Mango right now, and Zune pass on phone works like a breeze still, and games are about the same price as usa (with FX). So I'm sticking with it of course.
I was running with the US account but I used a lot my data downloading music in class plus i wanted my apps back. Back to australian mango for me
If you just want it for your computer, check out rdio.com - they are half the price and don't check credit card address

Greetings to all,
After three years of faithful service, i feel that my trusty Kaiser is ready to retire. It has served me well and survived a lot (including being dropped in sea water), but it is time to move on. I think i will just keep my Kaiser in the car as a gpsnav until tomtom is released for Android...
Anyway, I am almost set on buying the Desire, but i was wondering if someone could answer the following: I use Bluefire VPN (with group authentication) to access my work email. Is there something that would work equally well on Android?
Thanks for any information you might have.
aalex
The desire has a VPN set up option built in, I don't use it and don't know if it is what you are looking for, but it is worth checking out.

Thanks for responding buddy. I will try and find out more info if i can. Problem is that i cannot test it unless i get another android phone on my hands.
VPN on the desire does what it should. It makes it act as if you were connected to that network. You browse the web through it, you can retrieve exchange mail, etc. I have not yet found a way to access network computers though.
In order to access network computers, you can try Remote RDP from the market. There is a free version "Lite" with which I was not so happy. Since the exchange mail works fine, and since the screen is still too small to really work on the Desire like on a network computer (although it is way bigger than the screen of the Kaiser, I also had one), I decided not to invest into the pay version of Remote RDP and leave it. Actually, I don't miss anything.
Hi there,
does anyone know how to use VPN with a token? Have not found out....and currently I need it but is useless...
Also, can I use this VPN and its settings to get connected to "secret"/hidden network? My company uses a secret net, which the Desire does not find....but was thinkning that if I could set up correctly this net I can login into it (but we use RSA tokens).
Anyone who can help?
thanks
Hi I am using a Zune pass, and when using the Zune software on the PC or the Xbox I have no problems downloading songs and listening to them, but when using the marketplace on the HTC Mozart, all I get is the option to buy the song/Album or listen to the 30 seconds clip. I’m logging into the Zune marketplace with the same live id as the Xbox and the PC software on the phone any ideas?
Regards

same for me !?

your flag shows France. zune pass is not available there so it's not going to work for obvious reasons..
Just change your location to Great Britain or US it works fine in Germany

Tap and hold on the song or album and you should get the option to download, it works on my phone anyway. You need to make sure that the Zune Account's Live ID was the first you registered with the phone though, otherwise it won't work.
I have been using windows phone for the last few months and have been enjoying it very much. One of the features that was missing for the UK was podcast integration through the Marketplace. As your aware you cannot subscribe to podcasts via the phone in the UK. I have read a couple of workarounds that I have found on the web but no one work very well. They usually require a USA account. My way works for me.
Here goes..
Pre requisites
2 PC’s
1 phone
Firstly you need to reset your UK phone to factory settings. Or just use any other phone that’s factory reset.
Turn it back on and go through the set up process ensure you tell the phone your region is USA.
Finish the set up procedure.
Go to Marketplace on the phone \ podcasts\ (if your region is set to USA podcasts will be available)
Now via the phone subscribe to all your favourite podcasts.
PC #1 - should have Zune installed (I used the 1st .exe version that can be found by using google)
I also have this PC with region as USA (not sure if this is needed or not)
Plug in your phone and it will connect to Zune. Do NOT log in to Zune.
Go to device and copy/transfer all the podcast subscriptions to your PC.
Now set up wifi sync (if you used a fresh phone set the sync up on your own device remember no need to log in)
This machine is now set and no further action is required. I keep mine on 24/7.
PC #2 have Zune installed as normal. You can log in and use this machine for software updates etc.
Next, set your phone to region UK as normal. Your phone will now work as normal.
PC#1 will automatically sync new podcasts to your phone every night when you plug in. I have been using it for over a month and its great.
Hope this is of use. The only issue may occur if you sync music (which I don’t as I just stream it) and which PC is best to use.
Now I hope this is useful to some people. It works for me and gets me around UK podcast issue

I loved this function on my Zune HD, also works fine on my PC. Two questions:
a) Do you manage to create a Smart DJ Mix from your phone?
b) What do you make of this function in general?
Doesn't work on my Omnia 7 in Germany, sadly. Does it work for anyone without a Zune Pass?

You can try checking off 'pick music from mp' in setting and than try smart dj.. maybe than it will pick only from ur collection.. but wont that be like playing music on a shuffle mode..? cos than their is noone telling it to be 'smart' and pick music with similar tastes.. thats where data connectivity and zunepass thing comes in..
I have a Zune pass in the UK and when I do smart DJ on my pc it just picks tracks from my collection
edit didnt even know it was meant to pick from zune content as well, a little bit of googling and in the uk it will only show non collection content if you start the smart dj off from inside marketplace
UK people get ripped off, no 10 free tracks and no proper smart dj by the sounds of it
I've never had a Zune Pass and on my Zune HD I could use Smart DJ just fine, it would work within my own collection. On my phone it doesn't work at all. Zune Support on twitter told me I had to make the mix on my PC first then sync it with my phone. Either he was talking out of his butt or this is a totally stupid move by Microsoft.

Have you made sure you have gone to settings--->applications---->music and video checked "use music from marketplace" when using smart DJ.
All working fine for me - some of th choices it comes up with are a little esoteric, but hey............UK HD7 (I have a Zune Pass)

God, that's stupid. I bet it won't even update the playlist on the phone in realtime, e.g. I dislike a song on my phone and it isn't removed from my playlist without syncing again.
no problems of any sort with smartDJ on my arrive and I've been using it since the first mango beta but then again I also have a Zune pass but there is an option that can be unchecked from picking music from the marketplace.
No problems here. Works fine on UK HD7 with Zune pass. Also found out something I didn't know. When playing the tracks if you tap the name of the track below the album cover it shows the playlist that has been chosen for you & this can also be saved. Neat feature.

I'm talking about using it without a Zune Pass which again, I could do on my Zune HD (and can still do on my PC). Has anyone tried that on their WP?

I recognized that the artist artwork/background is gone from my phone too with Mango. I have smart dj and artwork in Zune on my notebook, but nothing on my phone anymore, nada. And I think there were biographies in the player too?
What the hell, why do they disable features? I can't even buy a Zune Pass in Germany...

Same problem here and I'm in the UK and have the Zune Pass 14-day trial. I didn't have a phone before Mango so can't comment on functionality before the update.
I have an Amazon Fire TV imported from the US,,, Is it possible to use my UK Prime Instant Video account? I can link it up to my UK account (the apps seems to reflect this) but I seem to be seing US Movie/TV content. Also no way to set timezone to UK.
Any views?
(sorry m8 I'd never noticed the default list of TZs was so dang restricted...)

In the Netherlands, got this problem as well. Opened the Amazon settings apk, and those few time zones are hardcoded in the app/xml, so looks that amazon doesn't have any outside US plans for now.
Sideloaded a default Android Setting apk, but switching time zones didn't stick, same as via adb shell setprop persist.sys.timezone, so think we'll need to wait for root access to make it stick.
I installed "Time Zone Changer" from the playstore, worked for me, +2 GMT, even after reboot.

Hi there,
So are you saying that you have an amazon.co.uk account, but the Fire TV prime movies on your box are the USA movies? (I think that means you get about 2x as many choices AFAIK... which is fantastic. So is that true?
Also, how about NetFlix, is that UK or USA content?

Mark.

Everything on the FireTV is region restricted to the US. Including Prime, Netflix and Hulu. If you try from any other region, like UK or Canada as an example, you'll get an error msg when you try to load a video. The only way to get around the error is to use a VPN. So far, vpn apk's, like Hola, don't work.

Holy crap, so why are some people buying it in the UK on eBay... Some sellers saying it's UK ready...
Perhaps we'll get lucky with an Android TV announcement at Google IO.

Here is my experience so far...
If you use a service like SmartDNS or Unblock-US, you can watch Netflix from anywhere in the world using your UK Netflix account. No need for VPNs. The services costs an extra $5 a month but worth it. Works great on all devices, including my Fire TV.
The service also works a treat for Hulu, but the Fire TV app is for Hulu. This needs a US credit card to subscribe.
For Amazon Instant Video (the pay to rent/buy service), you need a US Amazon.com account and a US credit card. You can use a service like US Unlocked (not to be confused with Unblock-US mentioned above ) which lets you register for a virtual US credit card with a US billing address and works great on Amazon and Vudu. Been using it a few years, but it does require a huge leap of faith to sign up for it - you need to send bank details etc for initial setup. I haven't had any issues so far, but appreciate many won't want to do this.
You can probably also get Amazon.com vouchers but have not tried this for Instant Video . Lots of sites sell them
The kick in the teeth for me is Amazon Prime and not having access to the UK service. On the Fire TV it's not an app that you launch so to speak, it's integrated into the menus. Everything that is served is the US content. Unlike Netflix, which uses the same app to server different content based on your region, Amazon has different apps for each region.
So to get UK Prime content, we need a UK version of the app sideloaded. At least that's my conclusion. The best version would be the Google TV apk (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.amazon.avod) and there are some discussion around about ripping it, but I don't think anyone succeeded. We would also need it to be the UK version of the app.
As an example, on PS3, to get UK Prime, I need the app from the US PSN store, and for US Prime you need the one from the US PSN store.
The other challenge is sideloading it. I tried sideloading this Amazon Instant APK just as a test, and I got an error saying com.amazon.avod already installed, which is the main Prime app on the Fire TV. Someone much smarter than me would need to figure out how to change the name of the app/package so it can be installed alongside each other. Even if you could, this app won't work anyway to get UK content (or even work at all with a remote), but it's one step closer if we can get two versions of the Amazon app installed side by side.
Hope that helps someone somewhere It's still a great piece of kit - only thing I'm missing is UK Prime.
Cheers

Does Netflix UK work for you? Mine (also using Unblock Us) does show the content, and can navigate, but will refuse to play movies. It will start loading but then stalls after about 40% loading.
adb logcat gives java cert errors.

Hmm you're right. I've been mostly watching US and only tested accessing UK content, not playing. Tried playing and it stalls at 40%.
As a test, I tried a different Netflix apk that I found and it works fine in terms of playing the movie, but this apk is designed for touchscreen and a bit crappy to use with the Fire TV remote.
So, either it's a bug with v1.0.1 of Netflix which comes with the Fire TV, or it' an extra region check they've added, which sucks. I suspect it's just a bug/restriction of this old version.
If we can find a version Netflix apk that works well with a remote, then this would be solved. Unfortunately most results that come up are for touch screens.
Sooo close to being the perfect box! Hopefully someone can figure out a way round it.
Cheers
UPDATE: Netflix UK now works for me as I mention below.
Unfortunately I haven't found a way around this. I am in the UK and bought a Fire TV whilst in the US. When returning none of the videos play, none of the applications load (apart from the ones I've sideloaded).
It is still useful, as I put XBMC on there but it would be great to be able to use an Amazon Prime UK account or even just set the timezone without faffing about.

Not sure if it's something I inadvertently did, or something that changed server side at Netflix/Amazon, but Netflix UK now works on my Fire TV! I tried US, Mexico and UK and all movies and TV shows play (no longer get stuck at 40%). Worth trying it again if you were having trouble before.
All that's left now is for the new Netflix client (coming soon later in the year) and for a way to get Amazon UK, and I'm sorted!

Indeed, somewhere around the last firmware update, Netflix started working! Uninstalled the sideloaded version, because this client is actually usable. Now wait for the updated one, but already really helps in usability.
