Root after OTA - Droid Incredible Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I have rooted my incredible before but because of the new ota being pushed out soon, I ruu'd back to stock everything, BUT I still have S-OFF. My idea was that I would be able to download the ota and get it up and running, then I I have the clockwork recovery as a PB31IMG.zip file on my SD card. After the ota could I just flash the clockwork recovery through HBOOT, then superuser through recovery and be rooted?! Please let me know!

Probably but why do that when there are rooted roms that are literally the ota minus the radio plus root and deodexed. It's much safer and no risk of losing root.

Question

So i uninstalled CM6, and installed the stock 1.47. RUU I do not have root access now because i want to install the stock 2.2 Froyo. Is it okay that i still have AR as my recovery installed for my recovery? Also, if i was to nandroid to restore CM6 would it go back to being rooted?
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
If you flash the 2.2 that just came out, you're in no mans land since you'll be flashing a unrooted froyo.
In other words, you will lose root which also means that you not be able to nandroid back..
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
Having AR as your recovery image should be "okay" although it may get overwritten by the update, or at least locked out by a new HBOOT. If that happens, you wouldn't be able to access your nandroid backup anyway.
So, broken record time: Don't update if you don't want to lose root. Wait for a rooted ROM or a proven root method to be released.
I don't mind that. I'll wait for a root. Will it get rid of AR recovery as well. I installed stock Rom as said. Just want to make sure the recovery and everything else will be gone.

Thanks guys. Sorry for double post.

If you flash the RUU then it will bring "everything" back to stock.

[Q] Use ROM Manager to flash Clockwork Recovery?

Just S-OFF'd and rooted my wife's Inc2. Does anyone know if it is ok to use ROM Manager to flash Clockwork Recovery after using the Revolutionary tool to install their custom Clockwork Recovery? The reason I want to is because ROM Manager doesn't seem to recognize the Revolutionary CW Recovery that their tool installs.
Does it work? Will it ruin recovery? What's the story?
Revolutionary doesnt push SU unless they updated it to. And you need root to flash recovery with rom manager. If you cant get recovery installed with revolutionary, youll have to install it with fastboot.

I used rom manager to flash CWM after flashing a different CWM. Everything is all good

Thanks Times,
I used their tool which (after S-OFF) pushes a custom clockwork recovery which I then used that to flash SU onto it. But now I was wondering if it was ok to use ROM Manager to push a clockwork recovery that it could recognize. But it looks like Beenz was able to with success, just looking to see what others have done or know.
Thanks!
I also have the CWM installed by Revolutionary. In ROM Manager, go to menu --> manual flash override. I've been using it with no problems without having to reflash CWM. The only drawback is that every time ROM Manager starts up, it tells me that there is an newer version of CWM available. Not the end of the world.
So reflash or don't, works either way.
Thanks xenakis.

Why doesn't my phone like custom ROM'S?

I have followed the rooting method 2 times now and I keep having the same problem. My phones lock screen comes on about every 15 seconds and stays on for about 10 seconds. This completely kills the battery in about 3 hours with no use of the phone at all. I've rooted and in-rooted twice now. No problems at all when I'm stock. I don't do anything to the kernel, either. I just use what the ROM comes with. I've tried CWM7 and two Sense ROM'S. Any help or advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

hmmmm very odd. did you do full wipes when installing new roms? i've had quite a few rooted phones and have never seen this issue personally. maybe your power button is schitzing out.
Sent from my Incredible 2 3D using XDA Premium App
Both times that I've rooted, this happens. It doesn't do this unrooted, though. I used the guide on YouTube linked from droidforum.net and I got the links for the zips from there, too.
Sent from my ADR6350 using XDA App
I did full wipes both times from the recovery menu.
Sent from my ADR6350 using XDA App
very odd I'm stumped. did you root with revolutionary?
Sent from my Incredible 2 3D using XDA Premium App
that's the method i used. the first time i did it was on 2.3.3 and the second time was on 2.2.1. i was hoping that that would make some kind of difference, but it didn't.
tell you what. try rerooting then after revolutionary kicks you into recovery just flash a custom ROM instead of the root zip. the custom ROM will be rooted anyway. wipe fist of course just to be safe
Sent from my Incredible 2 3D using XDA Premium App
this is the walk through that i used and the links.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tnlnWW8tsvo&feature=mfu_in_order&list=UL
do you think it could have anything to do with the links? maybe they're not current?
so to be clear. flash back to stock unrooted gingerbread. then run revolutionary and let it install a recovery. make sure a custom ROM is on your sd. wipe then flash ROM zip. don't install the root zip. don't know if that will do it just brainstorming
Sent from my Incredible 2 3D using XDA Premium App
that's how I rooted. no sense flashing the root zip if your just gonna flash a custom rooted ROM anyway

what do you mean my "root zip"?
i run Revolutionary, then install CWM and SU. i even had this problem when i was only rooted, no custom ROM's, kernals, or root apps installed.
that's what I mean don't install su. skip that and just flash a custom ROM. cuz the ROM you flash will be rooted anyway. i've had trouble with an su zip on another phone
Sent from my Incredible 2 3D using XDA Premium App
ok, got it. should i just skip that step or would i just finish the process there. sorry, i don't remember if that's the last step.
by not installing SU, does that change anything? will everything still work?
no every thing will still work its how I got my phone romd and rooted. ok you want to go to stock 2.3.3 not 2.2.1. if u can't find the ruu for the gb stock let me know. then run revolutionary and let it install a recovery. boot into recovery and wipe everything then install a custom ROM of your choice. if you flash to gb stock from hboot make sure you delete it from your sd before running revolutionary or you won't be able to enter recovery without adb
Sent from my Incredible 2 3D using XDA Premium App
ok, i think i got it. i'll let my phone upgrade to 2.3.3 and then start. should i put the .zip for the ROM i want on my SD before i start so that i can install it in recovery?
yes. if you have cwm recovery DO NOT TAKE AN OTA UPDATE USE AN RUU
Sent from my Incredible 2 3D using XDA Premium App
I am currently uprooted. I'm on 2.2.1. Are you saying don't take the OTA update?
Sent from my ADR6350 using XDA App
if your not rooted and have the stock recovery installed its ok
Sent from my Incredible 2 3D using XDA Premium App

EVO rooted thru 2.2

I got my EVO yesterday and came with 2.2 and i rooted thru Unrevoked 3.2... (simplest root ive done)
I just want to know if there would be any problem flashing roms or anything. I got the latest clockwork recovery installed.
Thanks

Should have no problems as long as your s-off. Also I do recommend getting rid of clockworkmod recovery and getting amon ra(supersonic ra). Clockworkmod is know to cause problems and some roms are not compatible with it

Well, if you're feeling up to it, you could test it for the rest of us. No one seems to have reported back about anything yet. I'm sure that it will break root though.

i didnt go back and reread it but i think thats what garwynn tried and he lost root.
This is kinda required to get the OTA, isn't it?
If I understand correctly, the OTA will fail if rooted? Or is that it will fail if CWM/TW recovery is in place?

It will fail if you have cwm or twrp in place.....you need the stock recovery for it.....I think it will work even if you have root, but your root will be lost once you update

Thanks.. I thought it was one of those, just couldn't remember which. I may just hold off until I see what others are doing. I am going to look for a nice TouchWiz ROM that allows me to theme it.
Once the awesome Devs here at XDA get their hands on the code, it won't be long before we have a rootable Stock 4.3..
I've been wondering.
Do I need a stock recovery and a stock ROM to update or can I be running a custom ROM such as digiblur and update using stock recovery?

I'd just throw that under the "do not attempt" category. Odds are that while trying to apply the update, stock recovery would detect some assets that don't belong in your current build and abort the update. Also, if this update was successful and something messed up, you would now have no custom recovery. You would have to Odin back to whatever software version possible.
