According to this article on wmpoweruser.com - which referres to a windowsphone dev podcast, Mango will start to be released next week. Which is a little sooner than expected, since it was rumored to be released in the end of september.

Some said 15th earlier, which is on next week's Thursday. I hope this is true. Time for me to play those registry tricks to see if I can install extra languages.
But not sure if DVP will follow this schedule.......
The way Microsoft and reliable sources are talking, it seems as though Microsoft may have used some of its strength on carriers and we'll see a much more expedited release. That isn't to say some, or many, won't be delayed, but I doubt it'll be a NoDo type delay.
I will be amazed if my phone gets the update this side of Christmas and I refuse to het my hopes up
SO, what will we do if we have 7720 eh? Roll all the way back to Nodo?

Yup, that's why we were supposed to back up our backup.
I think this time around, once MS announces the Mango update rollout schedule, most of the devices will get it fairly quickly. MS should have learnt a thing or two from the NoDo episode.

@Henry I think Dell may be on board. I called last week about a replacement DVP and was told they were out of stock and to call back Sep 16 to get my replacement shipped out.

Keep in mind, The marketplace started accepting apps for Mango a few weeks ago. No Dev is going to release new apps for NoDO when Mango will offer more features in the API and everyone should have it soon.
Microsoft has a big push in getting Mango in everyone's hands ASAP.
The question is, how it will be done, the leaked roms from HTC are making people nuke their phones to install it, most carriers are going to want people to do it as a upgrade, because of data loss=support nightmare.
Time will tell but, I will bet it will be within the next 2 weeks for 90% of the carriers (huge carriers almost 99%)
Sadly MS is highly unpredictable. There was an overflow of rumors and statements made about the condition of WP7 upon initial release, which panned out to be false. Then there was another wildly overflowing number of rumors and statements made about the release of NoDo. NoDo was finally released when nobody really even cared anymore.
Mango was initially set for Sep./Oct of this year. If it happens, it will be the first time in recorded human history where MS has kept a date.

going by snickler's post there is a chance that we might not have to roll back if on 7220.68. Only time will tell...
Still on 7712 here. Didn't get the unofficial 7720 because not much is different in it. Im hoping I don't have to go back to nodo. Even though I have a backup (multiple in fact) its just annoying to lose my settings from mango. hopefully I can go from 7712 to official mango
Sent from my T8788 using XDA Windows Phone 7 App
7712 directly to official is highly unlikely as 7712 is beta and in the beta que. As has been said, 7720.68 may be back into the official release que (carrier and oem updates seem to come through) so a 7712 to 7720.68 to official release just might be a feasible update path that doesn't lose anything. Time will tell.

Have to agree with martylk, even if Microsoft get mango out this week, the carriers will svree things up for sure.

Microsoft completed Mango in July. What we are waiting on right now is the carriers (and handset makers, although it does appear that most/all of them are done now). If a release is announced in the coming days, it will be because the carriers have completed their testing and possible changes, and submitted whatever they have back to Microsoft, not because we are still waiting on them.
Yep if telenav breaks all the customers get boned cause the carrier wants their 9.99/mo... Its pretty sad, but I'm starting to think about dropping my smartphones (4 a dumbphone) and getting a 7" tab to save money and not have to deal with that in th future. this seems not o be worth it anymore...

Engadget's just posted a really nice preview of Windows Phone Mango, you guys should all check it out.
Bad news? Seems like it's still slated for Q4 of this year. Kinda glad I sold my Trophy now - so much for Multitasking in March.

That's not being a realist. They've already stated this will be released this fall on countless occasions. Nokia has also already stated at least one phone will be released this year as well.
Its coming this year, and I bet they are working overtime to get this out by sept. if possible at least as an update to already circulating hardware.
Mid 2012 at least? That will likely be the newly discovered Tango update. Apollo will follow and likely tie in with Windows 8.

I agree. Microsoft seems to be much more aggressive with the way Mango is being hyped this early in the development cycle. I will not be at all surprised to see phones with Mango pre-loaded, on store shelves before the end of September. And, I also expect the majority of carriers to be in a status of "delivering update" by mid-October at the latest.
Of course, I also believe that Samsung Focus users on AT&T will probably not receive the update until mid-2012 (still waiting for 7392 here), so in that sense I guess both extremes of the prediction scale are correct.
After reading and watching a lot of the Mango previews around the web I was surprised when I realized that even after iOS 5 was announced, and even comparing Mango to the current state of Android, that Mango is incredibly relevant and probably will be when launched -- hopefully with new hardware. Usually software announcements this far ahead of time really become dated quickly, but most of the features added really bring a lot of parity to Windows Phone.

If it were I in his position, I would respond with: because I shouldn't have to.
Microsoft promised updates, and so far have failed in delivering them in a consistent manner.
Still a huge wp7 fan, don't get me wrong. I don't ever see myself using another platform, but just being honest here.
I agree to a point, but I don't fault Microsoft for this situation. I lay all of the blame right at the feet of AT&T. Their contempt for their customers is astounding. Unfortunately I'm kind of stuck, since I have a grandfathered unlimited data plan, and jumping ship to get the same deal from Verizon before they close the door on their similar plan would incur a sizable ETF.
And, after the Chevron updater near-debacle, I'm a little gun shy of any workarounds that might speed the update process along via unsupported channels. So what's a guy to do?

Exactly. And people also need to stop pretending that Microsoft ever stated that NoDo would be released in January (or February, or March). They never did.
As for Mango, as far as I can recall, all they have ever officially said (so far) is later this year. If I had to guess, I would say that it will be available on new devices in late September / early October, and on existing devices starting in October. But, as I've said before, AT&T will be (by far) the last to approve the update. So between them and Samsung's pathetic firmware reputation, I doubt that I'll see it on my Focus before next February, if ever. Which means I will probably be looking for a new phone by November.
Glad i dont have a samsung device, my guess mango for htc will be out first
I'm perfectly ok with beta 2 until Mango is available for everybody.
Excited to see the changes between beta 2 and final.
Samsung Focus v 1.3.. so I've had 0 update troubles.
If they learned from their mistakes with Nodo, I'd expect Mango around September/October for existing and new devices.

I think NoDo taught them one thing or two and I definitely think it will be this year. Reasons for that being:
- Microsoft officially said 2011 a few times
- There are new devices scheduled for release this year that will come with Mango onboard
- the new iPhone will be released this year as well as Android's Ice-cream Sandwich
- All developers are currently using Mango
My bet is November as that's when all the Fall updates have been released on the console side although they should really aim for September before the iPhone 5 is out.
That being said, since you're thinking 2012 you can only be pleasantly surprised when you get it before that

"fall" is only two months away, as of tomorrow. Just to keep things in perspective.
It seems reasonable to expect the testing and certification by phone manufacturers and carriers to take at least two months, which would be consistent with all of the timelines that have been "leaked" over the past few months. Many rumors indicated that Mango would RTM in July (which it has), and that new Mango-equipped hardware would begin to hit retailers by late August/early September (which also appears to be accurate - remember, no one ever said they would be available worldwide at that time).
Add in another month to complete manufacturer/carrier testing for existing devices, and deal with the logistical issues around preparing for the distribution, and people on reasonable carriers could easily start seeing the update on their phones in early October. People on AT&T will probably see it by June of next year.
Already reported by Microsoft themselves that Windows Phone 7 Mango has not RTM'd yet. Which is good IMO, because I'd rather them work on it as much as possible.

Seriously, though, It seems obvious now that the code was already frozen when the original report "leaked", but that the hand-off to handset makers and operators was not complete. Now it is.
So, we are still on track (barring ridiculous manufacturer/carrier delays) to see people actually receive the update by late September/early October. And, if Nokia does have hardware ready to go (which seems evident), we may see Mango-equipped new phone models very quickly.

I'm not sure what you're asking. All WP7 updates go through a certification process with both handset manufacturers and mobile operators. But neither of those entities "push" the updates to phones. Update delivery only happens through Microsoft (i.e., Zune).
So, what is happening now is that the other companies involved have received their copies of Mango for final testing and sign-off. They had likely already received earlier builds, so they could begin development of new features and/or apps (thanks to all of the new capabilities they might want to capitalize on), but now the clock is ticking on them. They complete the sign-off, send back to Microsoft any modifications they have made specific to their hardware or mobile service, and then Microsoft combines those into various bundles that ultimately get delivered to our phones.
The one exception to that rule is unbranded phones, which will probably receive the update before carrier-branded ones, since there is only one level of sign-off needed before the update can be made available.
The big question is whether Microsoft will be able to apply more pressure to carriers (especially AT&T) to sign-off in a timely manner. On this issue, let's just say that I have my doubts.
Out of curiosity, did we ever get a notice of the specific date that NoDo went RTM? I don't recall seeing one. Maybe the fact that Microsoft is being so vocal this time around is part of their plan to "motivate" carriers.
This is fantastic. Like others Im hoping someone leaks the latest build so XDA members can get their fingers dirty.

i don't know how to be more clear with my question.
i can't see att caring about what microsoft says about signing off. they aren't exactly pushing wp products, and could care less about an update that will -not- sell another contract/phone to existing customers. an iphone hardware update on the other hand, oh yes yes yes, they love that stuff.
i did see a couple of blog posts (via my android news aggregator) stating that there would be a mango hardware unveil today, along with the rtm statement. apparently, bloggers jumped the gun, again.
the rtm statement is really a non-news worthy event. "we released something to someone, so sometime soon you might have a something for your phone. maybe." really that's all it is.
now HARDWARE... that's something i can understand there being threads and news about. say, searay or whatever the supposed new SHIPPING device is, that's news.

Pushing products in a store and pushing updates to existing phones have nothing to do with each other. So I still don't understand your original question about carriers pushing the update to our phones. They don't push the update, Microsoft does.
Nearly 1 month ago Microsoft said the developer can submit on 22/8.
Yes dev's can submit starting tomorrow. So expect some updates in the next week or two once they are approved.

Just because developers will be able to submit apps doesn't imply that those apps will immediately show up in the marketplace. Mango has not been officially released to the public, so it seems very unlikely that any Mango-specific apps would be released in the marketplace yet.
I think the reason they are allowing apps to be submitted now is so that they can queue them up, and on the day Mango is publicly released they can also announce something like "along with today's release of Windows Phone 7.5, we are pleased to announce the availability of 5000 new apps in the marketplace, all designed to take advantage of its new features".

Considering that no one knows when Mango will rollout (not even Microsoft), then its safe to assume that they'll probably just start putting apps onto the Marketplace as soon as they are certified. Anyone with a Mango device will see Mango apps automatically, and anyone who doesn't have Mango will continue to see apps for their version of Windows Phone 7.

The problem there is that there is no one "release day". The release day is whenever the manufacturers and carriers have their version of Mango ready for your phone. So there will be multiple release days, each different for every carrier and possibly even for specific phone models.

That's not entirely true either. Manufacturers and carriers don't deliver WP7 updates. They all go through Microsoft. The "release day" could be the day it is announced that the first wave of updates are being delivered to customers. Or, it could be the day the first new phones preloaded with Mango are available for sale (which could easily be coordinated so that several go up for sale the same day).
Even with NoDo, there was a public announcement of availability/release of the update, even though many/most people didn't receive it until some time later.

Even if what you say is true, the apps still wouldn't be available tomorrow. Once apps are submitted, there is an approval process they must pass before they are released in the marketplace. That process typically takes about 4-5 days, at least from the developers I have spoken with.

No one said that they deliver updates, but it is in their hands now (as Microsoft even says). They'll hand it back to Microsoft to release, so the ball is still in their court as to when there will be an initial release.
Regardless, it doesn't appear that they will stop the flow of Mango apps just to make one huge announcement at some point in the future. Heck, there are already apps that do some Mango-specific things available, and those have not been stopped thus far.
Backward Compatible with Pre-Mango WP7
Hi all
I am sure that a requirement of "Mango" applications is that they are backward compatible with pre-Mango WP7 versions. MS would be crazy not to stipulate that.
If that is the case, then Mango compatible apps/updates could start appearing in the WP Marketplace towards the end of this week.
Look out for them I say!
Cheers

Well, that's impossible minding the awesome new featureset we get with Mango!
considering that the Fujitsu IS12T is available for retail on the 25th (that's in 3 days!), apps should start trickling in tomorrow itself. there's going to be a huge influx of apps and the certifiers will be trying to get through them as quickly as they can. Also, Cliff Simpkins said on the WP Dev Podcast that present Mango users (that's us devs) should be able to see the mango apps in our marketplace app as soon as they are certified.

Unfortunately, this is not the case. Apps made for Mango will only be displayed on the Marketplace of a Mango device.
If you are using something pre-Mango, you'll only see pre-Mango apps on your Marketplace.
Mango apps will not be backwards compatible. They will not work in Pre-Mango. Apps updated to Mango also can not have Pre-Mango updates once they are updated for Mango, which means the last version made for Pre-Mango will be the last version ever once they update the App for Mango's new features.
Mango Apps will NOT be backward compatible : what users should know
Speaking of Mango apps, anybody know how apps like MSN Video and 4th and Mayor are using Mango features already?
MSN Video shows up in Bing when you click on a movie card and 4th and Mayor allows you to pin specific locations to your home screen and it will launch directly to that location.

Well, MSN Video is a Microsoft app, and Jeff, the 4thandMayor dev, is a Microsoft employee, so he probably has some wiggle room.
checked the marketplace now, no mango apps yet..

Of course. They have to be tested and certified just like pre-Mango apps. So that will take some days.
Anyone used it?

Yeah I've seen that thread. From the comments it's a branded ROM so I'll pass. It's a shame Microsoft is taking so long, I thought they would have made to sure to have it out before Apple announces the iPhone 5.

It's not MS, it's the OEM's. Mango is already RTM aka Released to Manufacturers.
Manufacturers = OEM's = HTC/LG/Samsung/Dell/Nokia/Etc.

What do you mean it's the OEM's? I'm talking about releasing the update to existing phones, the green light is up to Microsoft isn't it? At least for unlocked/unbranded phones it might be.

MS released it to OEM's. MS has officially stated it is now in their hands.

Even unlocked/unbranded phones need to have hardware-specific updates from the OEMs completed before Microsoft releases the official update.
Yeah I know that but evidently some updates are ready (Omnia 7 for instance, we also heard the HTC ones might be done). There would be no harm in releasing these, it would at least ensure deployment is gradual.

Here's what happens. MS RTM's Mango. OEM's than test & make their customizations. OEM's submit this back to MS to verify. MS verifies their updates to meet quality of end user experience. MS than signs the update with a security certificate & puts the update on their server. If the OEM changes cause problems/bugs, it's returned to the OEM to be fixed. The end of the story is it's up to the OEM to make their updates/changes/customizations in a timely manor & without major/noticeable problems.
Like I said I know how the system works but surely Microsoft is/would hold back on ready updates to release them all at the same time. As evidence, the Omnia 7 update is ready, would have been nice to have it out straightaway.

I'd doubt they're holding it back. Please give the source of this rumor.
EDIT: The only thing I'm seeing is there's a firmware update for the Omnia 7 to make it "Mango Ready" & fix some bugs. Considering this & all the issues Samsung WP7 devices have had with their Firmware, I highly doubt they have Mango ready & if they do, it'll probably fail the quality control check. Isn't there still Focus v1.3(?) users who still don't have NoDo?

All Focus users are (finally) able to receive NoDo. However, Focus 1.3 users still have not received the 7392 security update, despite it being available to every other WP7 device for four months.
Regarding the Omnia 7 rumor, if the update were officially ready, it would appear on the "Where is my phone update page". There is a separate section for "open market phones". Since nothing appears there (in fact, there is no Mango column at all yet), I think it is safe to assume that the update isn't ready.

Ah, okay, thanks for the clarification. I knew I heard something about them not receiving an update.
Looks like I was right regarding Microsoft holding back the Mango update, that seems so obvious to me as we know the HTC updates are ready, they were leaked. The Samsung ones are probably ready too. Now this info comes out from Vodafone Australia, they're done testing the update and are waiting on Microsoft to deliver it:

HTC already said their Mango ROMs are ready to go. So his question was valid. Why aren't the unlocked/unbranded HTC phones getting Mango, yet?

That is what I've been saying as well. I believe they have been waiting until everyone is ready (or at least the big players) before announcing the update, in order to avoid the bad press that the NoDo fiasco brought.
HTC and Samsung are both ready (the combination of leaked ROMs and Mango updates to their marketplace apps supports this idea). Now we know that Vodafone is ready, and it wouldn't surprise me if (gasp!) AT&T is also ready, after reading their press release from Monday. So the question is, what about the rest of the carriers and current handset makers? And is there any reason they would hold back until Nokia announces their new offerings?
