So this morning I used zedomax's root video on YouTube to root my phone. Everything went fine until I get to the bootloader and it asked me if I wanted to update the image. I said yes. It did its thing then got stuck on the white HTC evo screen. So I pulled out the battery and went back to the bootloader and said no to updating the image and tried to go to recovery and I got stuck at the black screen showing the phone with the red exclamation point with the triangle. My guess is I messed up in allowing it to update the image file. I have the same SD card from a previously rooted evo so it may be an old one left there. I had been rooted with unrevoked. Should I just run the unrevoked root? I had a replacement phone with the updated gingerbread software. The phone boots up fine but it can't get to the recovery. And I noticed that I'm back on froyo.
wrong section... and go to the revolutionary IRC channel to get some help
first things first make sure your bootloader says "revolutionary" at the top and "s-off" at the top if you don't see this that means you didnt run the tool correctly. if you do see this it means you skipped the step about hitting "y" to download recovery. at this point you need to download a recovery image that is labeled "pc36.img" then flash it using bootloader.

It said revolutionary at the top and when I hit y it flashed successfully. But now I ended up getting downgraded to froyo. I guess I should just root using the previous methods?
No. Ur good. Sounds like u have custom recovery now so dl ur fav rom then wipe n flash in recovery. Done. Or get su n keep stock rom

I need to reset my Evo to stock ROM so I can send it in to Sprint. When I tried flashing the PC36IMG.zip in the bootloader, it unexpectedly stopped mid-flash. Now whenever I try to boot the phone, it goes straight to fastboot, whether or not I press the volume buttons.
How can I fix this?
BTW: I've seen this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=808707 which has the exact same problem as me... including what he said in his second post (the third post on the page) that nobody replied to. I used the same PC36IMG linked in that page, in fact. It loads the ZIP but then it goes back to the bootloader.

You need to flash a kernel, if you check netarchy's thread in my sig I believe there will be a link to the stock kernel in it.
Okay, how do I flash the kernel? When I tried last time, I couldn't connect to my phone via adb. And while trying to flash the stock ROM, it overwrote clockworkmod recovery, so now I just have normal recovery .

eww, ok. What does the first two lines in your hBoot say? Should be something like Supersonic Prod S-OFF or something like that
Supersonic EVT-2-3 Ship S-On
HBOOT-2.02 0000
I'm wondering why you still have S-on.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=829045
You need to have S-off in order to flash anything other than pc36img iirc.
I think S-on came back on after I tried to flash PC36IMG to get back to root. I've been flashing stuff all the time before, so S-on couldn't have been on..
Okay, if I take this to the Sprint Repair Centre in this condition, and say that HTC told me to use the HTC RUU installer, and this happened about midway through (pretty close to the truth) do you think they'll take it? I needed to take the phone back for a replacement anyway.
My EVO keeps on going into recovery mode with red triangle on it. I have tried to push the adb push PC36IMG.zip /sdcard but when the phone reads the zip it keeps on failing with these errors radio_vz fail bootloader fail-ic , image check fail and update fail!..
I have also tried to run RUU but it keeps on giving me usb connection errors. What do I need to do get my phone up and running
hello and welcome to the forums.
What method of rooting are you using?
At what stage are you getting to that you are at this point?
additionally it is helpful for posters to post in the section that best fits there post in this case Q&A. this si so it keeps things easy to read and find which you will quickly find can be a task all its own as you root and start playing around. it isn't a huge deal that you posted wrong though you may get a few nasty remarks for it just dont let them get to you and in the future try post questions there.
lastly if you hold the vol up button and power when at the red ! does it do anything for you?
I followed this article
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=838448 basically the root didnot go through sucessfully and phone keeps on going into the recovery mode.
Now I am trying to get my phone up and running , apparently something went wrong with the script posted in the forum.
This has turned out to be a quite an adventure for me . The process failed at step 7 and it never worked from that step.

Don't worry. We've all had our bad rooting experiences. You're in good hands here. I'd recommend posting in the Q&A section because there will be a lot of people that can help you there (especially when it gets buisy later tonight). Breathe, you haven't bricked or destroyed your phone. You're no where close to in trouble
Are you S-off? If so sounds like your recovery didnt flash correctly.
You can try flashing a new recovery. Then if thats good just get superuser and busybox installed once your up and running.

FIX BROKEN RECOVERY
This is really only needed if you rooted with one of the previos guides version 6 or lower or if you installed a different recovery like I told you not to. It installs amon_ra 2.2.1
1) Download File PC36IMG_Recovery.zip and Rename to PC36IMG.zip.
copy to the root of your SDCard and power off phone
2) Power your phone back on into the boot loader by holding power and vol-down until your presented with a white screen. It will read the pc36img.zip and as you if you want to flash. Say yes. Then it will ask if you want to reboot, VOL+UP for yes.
3) If your rom gets tossed in the process. Reboot your phone into bootloader select recovery, and reflash your rom....DONE

No , its SOFF. I already copied the file to the zip and it failed with these errors
radio_vz fail bootloader fail-ic , image check fail and update fail!

It sounds like it never flashed the rom & recovery. Could you attach the autorootlog file to a post so I can see where it went wrong?
Since you are already showing s-off it will be an easy fix. It would be better to run the RUU, for a clean flash, then running autoroot again where it will see you are s-off and finish, but you could also use the flash recovery tool in the post below to simply install a recovery.

smartguy10,
Could you please send me the autoroot log file that was made so I can find out what went wrong and possibly fix it?
I looked at the autoroot folder and didnot find autoroot file. Before I use your script again what precautions I should take again. If you look at the error messages it looked again the flash didn't finish completely.
Is there a way that I can back up my stock rom to sd card and restore it again if something goes wrong.
Hey guys,
I had a friend root my phone and wanted to unroot it, I wasnt sure how to do it so i stupidly did stuff without reading first.
I am running unrevoked it seems and i went into recovery and did a factory reset. Well my phone still wouldnt accept the OTA update so i went back into recovery and deleted data and a few other options. Well i have been reading and been trying to reflash my phone back so i can use it again. Well i dont have an OS anymore it seems so the only thing my phone does is go to the bootloader. ( white screen with options Fastboot, Recovery, ect. )
I downloaded an image file and the bootloader checked it and said Main version older and failed to install. So i did more reading and flashed the unrevoked zip again and tried again. didnt work, so i have been downloading every image i can find tring to get it to install and it never does. It says i am missing file PC36diag.zip and PC36diag.nbh or NBH file is not correct. It then unpacks the img file i have on there then checks it, then nothing happens ( that is with the other image files i dled not the original ) And when i say nothing happens i mean it says checking, then just goes back to the bootloader screen. I dont know what to do. Any help?
Did you try Z4 mod to un-root?
No,
This link is the method i was using to unroot

Have you tried running the RUU yet? I would give that a try. Also, I believe that when you get the 'main version older' error, it has something to do with what version hboot you have on your phone. There are many different PC36IMG.zips and many different RUU's. I believe you need to find the correct one for your phone. I would try the RUU first though, and see if you can get your phone back up that way. You run the RUU from your computer, and have the phone plugged in via USB. I will provide a couple links, one that contains every RUU and PC36IMG (all software versions), and another that has a bunch of factory ROMS. Hope it works for ya.

You've got good advise on the RUU. I already did it to bring my Evo into a store to be looked at.
In the Evo Development thread you'll find one or more posts with links to the Evo RUU files. If you have a 002 or 003 hardware version Evo, download the 3.29.x version RUU; if you have an 004 you can get the latest 3.70.x file.
Connect your Evo to your PC via the USB cable, run the RUU file on your PC, and befor eyou know it, you've got an unrooted, completely stock Evo. Add your info again, run the OTA updater to get you back to the latest version, and enjoy your stock Evo.
I hope this helps. Thank you for your time.
This is really starting to look like a megaupload advertisement
I'm having trouble unrooting my evo and have to ship it back in 4 days. I,ve tryed the unrevoked s-on and it worked but reflash pc36img didn't take tried 3 or 4. going to try this but what do I do to phone to connect? disk drive?
i was also having this problem yesterday but i did it. i rooted using the autoroot program. i unroot using the ruu . heres what i did first download htc sync for your evo then plug in your phone to the pc. turn off your phone. turn it on to the bootloader . leave it there dont do anything else. then run ruu , if you get an error message keep on trying it . also google for the ruu program. hope this help
Hi,
My first phone was rooted and I rooted my second too so I am confident rooting them however my second phone which had been rooted for a while had a space issue on SD card so I cleared out a few things which unfourtunatley included all the backup files ....
It worked fine afterwards but didnt let me change rom (using rom manager) so I just left it in working order for a few months until I wanted to reflash a new rom (as I am sure most people do every few months)
When it didnt let me, I tried to unroot and root options using superoneclick and unrevoked3 however, unrevoked 3 just stayed on "running root" and superoneclick got so far and crashed. When I go into the bootloader, it says something about some filed missing (think might be some nbh files).
At the moment, when normally turning the phone on, it stays on the screen with the pink circle, the first boot screen.
I have tried updating it using the RUU but it takes a long time and then says "use the correct rom for your device" which I am, this method just boots my phone and goes to a htc logo.
I can also get into the bootloader but when I apply update.zip, it says it has failed and something about files not existing/step 7 failure.
The thing is, I can get to fast boot and I am sure there is a way via ADB to force a new image (such as a cyanogen recovery image) on to the device.
Can anyone tell me how to push an image to the phone without using the RUU (as this didnt work for me)??
Maybe my phone is just bricked
Thank you very much!!
It. Is. Not. Bricked.
You can only push files onto the phone through fastboot if you are S-OFF (are you?)
Have you tried to enter recovery? boot into Bootloader (vol down + power) and then select recovery. Does it work?
no?
Then you need a goldcard. Make one with your working Desire, stick it in your misbehaving one, and then run the latest WWE RUU (link on my guide, check #resources)
Thanks but I do not have another Desire...
Any card reader
yeah, I got a card reader laying around somewhere, if not ill go get one in Tesco, what where you thinking?

Hi Bortak, I am having similair problems with my phone sticking on the pink circle screen. I cant seem to load a recovery file from Bootloader. Will I need to make a Gold Card, my phone is s-off.
thanks mate
if phone is S-OFF go to my guide, look at advanced boot problems S-OFF.
SOLVED WOOHOO!
Thank you to all who helped but I managed to fix it my own way.
For anyone still having trouble...
I still had the cyanogen mod bootloader soo all I did was download the latest cyanogen mod rom and apply it (you can mount sd card from cm bootloader) and after a hairy minute, it finally booted up!

Translation: I flashed another ROM because my other one didn't boot.
Hey guys, im running 5.0.2 atm. i want to unroot my htc one m9 because i have no reason for it to be rooted really. i was hoping to be able to use game killer and those memory editors, but no available version for the new lollipop. so i want to unroot. I have the stock rom and adb files ready on my pc. but when i try to issue a command to my phone, it says the device is offline. and yes the pc's fingerprint is allowed. if you are going to suggest i download drivers or anything like that please link it. i have tried updating drivers and all that, says it is working properly. thanks in advance!!
EDIT: Ok as of right now, my main concern is flashing the stock rom, which i downloaded, and renamed the 0pjaimg.zip thing. I typed "fastboot flash zip 0pjaimg.zip" and it says "error can not load '0pjaimg.zip'" what do i do?

Yea I tried that, didn't work. I ended up almost having a heart attack haha. I went to wipe but accidentally wiped everything on my phone, my data , the root, and even the OS. I was stuck in download mode and boot loader, could not boot into recovery. And I was stupid enough to not have a backup. I ended up reflashing a ruu (thru my PC with a ruu utility) several times and it finally worked. My phone now is unrooted and I removed the boot loader. I achieved by beginning goal with a big hiccup before hand haha. I will now make a back up of my phone today lol. And I had titanium backup up, but it said I didn't have root access(when my device was rooted) so I figured if half the root perks weren't working, I'll just unroot, which I am happy I did. Don't have to worry about harming my device anymore. Game killer and all those memory editors didn't work anyway so root was useless to me

When I unrooted using SuperSu it ruined my installation also. I was stuck in a bootloop until I installed TWRP and reinstalled SuperSu, terrible!!! It eventually unrooted and I relocked bootloader but nothing worked so I was forced to root and unlock bootloader again.
I am wondering though, how did you return to stock? I really want the latest AT&T stock but when I install that RUU .exe it gives me error 155 so I can't install it. I was using 1.32 stock AT&T and wanted to install 2.6 (I think that's what it is, it's Android 5.1).
I am S-On, and not S-off, could that be an issue? Bootloader is unlocked and I am rooted now.
You know how u r supposed to rename the ruu u want to flash (assuming you downloaded the stock ruu for your carrier and device). The problem for me was, I could never connect my device thought adb after I rooted it (fast boot worked when I put it in fastboot). Even when I could give a command , it could never load the ruu. So what I did, was right click the ruu and click run as admin. It should open up a page on the top saying something about a ruu/rom utility. Make sure you device is connected and had usb debugging( before you got stuck in the loop hopefully). Now click accept and all that good stuff on the utility, it should scan your phone and show u your current rom image, and then show you the latest rom image. Click update and it will boot your phone to boot loader and begin sending it to your phone. IMPORTANT: DO NOT TOUCH YOUR PHONE. Now here's the catch, if it said it failed or something about a USB error, close the program and start it up again. If your phone is stuck without the download bar moving(displayed on your phone), you are going to have to hard reset it. Google how to do it for your device (just a button holding combination). And start the program again. It will take a couple times for the program to work (mine took about 5-6 times). But it will work sooner or later. I am not home atm, but when I get home, I will find the link to the page where this info is displayed in a more orderly fashion and with pictures. It will be tonight, probably about 9 hours. Try this though, if it is too confusing, wait till I post the link. Good Luck!!
EDIT: Sorry just got back home from a long day haha, I'll be sure to look for the link tomorrow. But my directions above should be good, give it a try.
