Cigarette lighter car mount ? - Thunderbolt Accessories

Anyone know of a car mount that uses the cigarette lighter and has a means for charging ? The ones I've seen do NOT charge the phone. Seems to me it should be possible to add a cord... Ahhh, the mounts I've seen are in fact 'universal' so what plug design do they use ? Mini-USB, Micro-USB, etc, etc ? Hmmm, put a female USB connection and require the user to supply their own cord !
Also, how stiff are the necks/stalks ?

This is what I use, Works like a champ. Has reg usb power out.

One of these if yours is too long

The phone holder part looks very common. I wish I could see or find one locally just to look at first...
Thanks !

Emulating a car dock !

Is anyone aware or the physical way to fool the desire to go into car dock mode either by rewiring a usb cable, or does it use the same magnetic sensor as the nexus, I currently use a boadit iPhone cradle that fits perfect and i have a charger mini usb cramped and srewed into the bottom, I would like to be just be able to drop it in and it go into the Navigator app and switch on bluetooth automaticly and kill both when i remove it ..
thanks

The droid/milestone used magnets to detect the dock, but the google car dock uses bluetooth and doesn't even use the usb cable (it uses the gold 3 bits on the bottom of the phone). I too wished you could do the same, but my brodit holder fit the phone so badly, I've decided to shell out and try the original car dock - just waiting for it to come.
Thanks for the reply, so the million dollar question is how does the desire's dock sense when its dropped in the cradle, any ideas people ? I read somewhere forgot now doh !! that it might be a case of grounding one of the data lines in the usb cable, can anyone confirm this ?
I'd like to know this too.. Dockmode/Cardockmode
Look at this thread - probably the id pin, but i need someone with the same charger and a multimeter to check some things
I have 2 chargers (work & home) that I use that plug directly into the wall, the one at home brings up Navigator where the one at work doesn't, so it must have to do with the pins in the USB connector.
Can you do some measurements with a multimeter on that charger that opens the navigator???
oh this sounds like what we wanna hear, my betting is one of the usb data lines gets grounded as ive mentioned before !!! plz test to see if more than one of the pins in the usb plu is being grounded .... pretty plz !! heh
Hey Guys,
yes it looks like the Desire can be fooled into thinking its connected to a car dock, my car charger seems to do it when the usb is not properly inserted.
I suspect HTC might release a car dock for the Desire. If not some one should really monopolise on the fact that this can be done.
I will be experimenting with it soon but currently have way to much uni work to finish for the end of the month
Ok went into the workshop and stripped the desire usb lead, I tried every combo of pulling the data lines to ground even both together, the installed navigator.apk didnt kick in , but looking at a reatime system dump i could see usbconnected and type(0) , type (1), type(2) had been triggered, on the differnt combo's i tested, why its not kicking in is anyones guess, maybe cas the Incredible navigator.apk is strictly configured for that device, guess the Incredibles navigators.apk has to be recompiled with new settings !!
I will try it with the cardock.apk tomorrow ripped from the nexus we might have more luck with that me thinks !!! fingers crossed !!!
Keep up the good work! I FINALLY get my Desire delivered tomorrow (after waiting 4.5weeks for stock!!!), so I can have a look at this too... let us know how you get on.
I'm interested in a homedock/multimediadock trigger as well as the car dock trigger. It should be included in the Desire as well as the cardock.
Here's an emulator that could be helpful in the process of developing a dockapp or finding out what's really happening..
http://www.androlib.com/android.application.net-geekherd-dockenabler-pBmD.aspx
I'll try to find the homedockingtrigger if there is any to use in my homemade dockstation
Hi
Wonder if there has been any progress on this? I'm keen to hack my Brodit active cradle to be a fake real dock!

Same here! Any progress?!
after upgrade to froyo, i pluged my car charger in my desire and the car mode icon showed up, even when the other end of the charger is NOT pluged in the lighter. I use a charger for my old HTC Diamond and added a little thing that convert a mini USB port (wich is on diamond) to a micro USB. And the cable on my charger is too short for me so it has been moded (extended) by my self, there is only two wire in the cable for power, so there must be something in the plug itself that triggers the car mode. if only plug the converter into Desire, nothing happened
It's the ID pin that needs to be connected to ground, as indicated in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=744636

Total GPS/Car charging kit - $11.37!

So I went onto monoprice.com and was able to get a complete car kit that included a cigarette to USB adapter, 3ft USB to 5-pin microUSB cable, and universal car mount, all for a total of $11.28 $11.37 including shipping!
the individual items are:

I hope this helps anyone who is looking for a cheap but effective mounting system for their car
EDIT
The adapter did not charge the phone correctly, so my phone would drain faster than it would recharge. I went to amazon.com and bought a car charger that should work great, and only ends up making the total a few cents higher
Wow. Good price there.
The output of the car charger is 1000ma, the stock wall charger is 700ma I believe. You think it'll hurt it? If anything, I think the phone will just get warmer than normal when plugged in.
that's the car mount I use. Picked it up from there, really cheap but you get what you pay for. Its an ok car mount but not great.

Well hey, it'll work right? Lol.
As for the charger, I'm not sure. I don't think I'll do anything bad really.
dam thats not a bad price!
Just a FYI
Even though the car charger is rated at 1000mA, it does not have the D+ and D- pins shorted together. This causes the phone to think it is connected to a data only device (and not a power supply). Because of this, it only draws 500mA, which when using with Navigation actually causes more drain than what the charge is.
It's a simple fix though. Just pull apart the charger, and solder the middle pins together (look on the underside of the board, and solder together the two middle solder points). The proper way to do it, and the way I did it, was to bridge it using a 200ohm resistor.
Ask that kinda sucks. Well I'll see how it works before I try anything. Is there a canker on that site that will work correctly? Or is the problem with the car to usb rather than the usb cable itself?
I bought one of these chargers for my duaghter before this thread and it does not work with her Vibrant. Guess I will have to mod it.

You have to be a hard core tweaker to break down an solder a $2 cable. I wasted more than $2 worth of time just reading the post about it.
Ok, so it didn't work. The phone just said that the usb had been plugged in, but it didn't charge. I took a pic of what the charger looks like torn apart, can you tell me where I need to souder? Am I going to have to tear open the usb casing, or is it something I can do without tearing it apart any further?

So I grabbed another car-to-usb thing, and now it says It's charging but It's apparently draining faster than it is charging :-( it doesn't even seem to be slowing down the drain. Do you guys think that a different cable might affect things, or should I just get a new charger/adapter?

I don't have this charger, but try using the cable that came with the phone. If its the same, then try to exchange it or using a different cable.
I also bought mine from monoprice and it does not charge. It only drains .
Will look for alternatives.

I just did a few quick searches, because like a few others have said, it drains faster than it charges when using navigation. Not good if you're on a long trip.
Also, it is not the cable itself it's the charger that is not correct. I used both a monoprice wire and the oem one that came with phone. Just as an update, I have noticed that while soldering the points helped a little, it is still not pulling as much as even the stock wall charger (which is only rated at .7A). I found this out by going to the file /sys/class/power_supply/battery/batt_chg_current.
-While plugged into the wall ithe value is showing 1050 on average.
-Plugged into usb it shows 850 on average
-On the modified car charger around 900 on average.
So even with the mod it still doesn't pull the full amp and still drains a bit quicker than the charge

You can try the fix and see if you get better results than me. If you look at the port that you would plug in the usb cable, (from the angle you took the picture) you will see four pins "bend" down into the pcb board. These are the four pins I am talking about. The outside two are for power. The middle two are your D+ D- (data) pins. if you flip over the board you will see the 4 factory solder points, just add a dab of solder to the two middle points.
I bought this combo as well and the charger works fine for my usage: pandora on my one hour commute. I can't get navigation to work right (and I know how to get to work so I have not tested that.
Only flaw so far is that the audio cable from my phone placement on the windscreen to the aux-jack in for my stereo is an inch too far than my cable can reach. Time to get a longer cable.
I just went ahead and bought this on amazon.com
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003WRBGK6/ref=oss_product
This should do the trick, and when coupled with the gps mount is only a couple cents more than buying the adapter+cable
it would make the total package... $11.37
what do you guys think about this one?

suppose to replace car / wall charger as a one unit...
The new car charger works great when my phone is asleep it will fully charge in under an hour! The only thing is, with my screen all the way up using gps it still drains a lot faster than it charges. When I turned the screen down, it didn't seem to go down at all in the 5 or 6 minutes of driving I did. Does this screen really suck THAT MUCH power??? Are there any chargers out there capable of charging this phone well enough to allow for full screen brightness while using the gps functionality?

Car Mount

I'm on the hunt for an car mount for this phone that isn't a clunky universal one. I would also prefer one that I can permanently wire a charging cable, but I don't want one that sits in the cigarette lighter socket; wouldn't be practical for my car.
Has anyone seen one that might fit my needs? I've had a hard time finding Aria specific mounts in general.
Sent from my HTC Liberty using XDA App
i got 1 of these http://www.netimes.com/shop/enhance...-htc-aria-htc-gratia-p-2816.html?cPath=80_777 that attaches to the windshield with suction cup. it fits the phone very well. have to be careful when cranking down the adjustments not to crack the plastic. it happed to me a couple of times but they're only $6 so i guess you could buy several. not sure about the charging options. my phone came with a cigarette lighter adapter.
Awesome, that looks like exactly what I was looking for! Now to wire a usb cable up to the mount...

best Car Charger?

Ok so heres my dilema... I am in the search of a car charger that could allow me to use my navi, pandora and be able to charge it at the same time in my car while using the verizon car mount.
It seems motorola quick charger seems to be the one to beat from what many people say in the forums. But i am looking to see if there is a adapter which would allow me to plug my own usb cord? The reason for that is so i can plug it in under the arm rest to keep it hidden and run a 6 foot micro usb cable to the mount. is this possible? I did it with my ip4 with out issues....
I tried a Kensington charger that seemed perfect (http://amzn.to/g3mBYU ), but it looses connection with the car (adapter is TIIIIINY) and when it does work, none of the ports can keep my phone (with verizon HTC dock) charged up while using my navigation and pandora. I was actually loosing power.
In another thread i just read just because it says itsd a certain voltage does not mean it would work since micro usb is limited....
Does anyone have a charger you can recommended? Or will i have to but a micro usb charger itself with the cord attached to it.
Part of me says i should just get the moto quick charger, but i dont think the cable will be long enough to keep it hidden and i would have to keep it plugged in in the front part of the car. If i can get a long cable i dont need to keep plugging, unplugging and ju st dump the whole mount in the armwrest when i am finished
Any help on this will be appreciated. ive been doing alot of google searches but everyone has mixed opinions on this.
Find one that can output 1A.
I did... The one i put onbthe web link in my original post...but it was not outputting enough juice.

Go on Amazon and search Motorola micro usb car charger. The OEM Shop sells one for like $5. 00. I've been using it for months and it's a real Moto charger and works great.
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA App
thats the same motoi was talking about on my original post. i actually went ahead and ordered it from amazon. its supposed to push 950mah should receive it very soon
I use the iGo charger with the HTC tip works really well and its a rapid charger. it should meet all your needs
The moto quick charger rocks. Not sure I understand why you cant run it from the plug to your dock? Coil cords are 6ft and will stretch out. Thats how I ran mine. I will probable post some pics later of my setup - works great.

Is it possible to make your own battery case?

I have been designing a case for my phone that I will get 3d printed and I was wondering if it is possible to make a battery case. I know I can buy a battery and put it in the case I design but how do I wire it up to be able to charge the phone (and using usb otg will I be able to use the usb port while the cvase is on/plugged in?) or is it even possible to just' wire it up' or do I need some kind of chip in the case to moderate the charging? The battery cases that most people buy have a switch on them for charging and using the usb port ( a limit of usb otg im guessing, even though i cant find anywhere where it says that otg has such a limit and I have seen people reporting that they can use a charger and usb with a adapter [I know it has to do with providing enough power to the device plugged into the port, if it is possible does this need to be regulated?], also I was going to use an adapter in the case so that I can add expandable storage via micro sd or usb, hence why I wanted to be able to use the port while having the phoner plugged into the case), to have a switch like that (or the reason why they do have a switch)will I need to have some kind of controller?
Atm I am modelling a case that is normal and then has a clip on part for the battery pack (and usb hub, which limits when expandable starage can be used). I'm also modelling a non-removable battery section case.
So to some it all up, is it possible to make your own battery case and if so how?
P.S. This took me so long to write I forgot half of what I was saying, so feel free to ask questions if I dont make any sense.
Maybe mount a portable charger to your case?

that's basically what I want to do but mounted the whole portable charger would be massively bulky and I don't want to buy a portable charger and take it apart because portable chargers are expensive (I might as well buy a professionally made portable charging case)

Well, manufactured battery cases are also bulky. There would not be a difference. Portable chargers are not expensive, as I bought mine from Marshalls for around $15. What's your idea of "expensive"?
