Problem with my 6.1 Pro2:
My own Mp3-ringtones are no longer selectable neither with the "original" Windows-Dialogue nor with the 3d-config utility. I can only select the ringtones called "ring-(something)".
The MP3-ringtones themselves can be played using the Windows Media Player. An example of a ringtone that does not work on the Pro2 is attached.
Recently I deleted some progams from my SD-card manually, because they were never installed on this phone but on its predecessor, maybe this causes the trouble...

Place your custom ringtones into "\My Documents\My Ringtones" for them to be selectable.
Sorry, incomplete description, these MP3-files ARE in the relevant directory and are visible when selecting the ringtone in the drop-down-list.
But when I select the attached file I can only see the wait-signal (rotating colored circle) for a second and the dialogue pops back to the ringtone selected before..
this happened to me as well...
i have no idea how this happened im about to reset my phone
Update: still playing around a bit and the same ringtone, now saved as WMA in the same directory is accepted. The MP3 still is shown but cannot be permanently selected. Nevertheless this mp3 file can be played using standard media player.
I give up, still thinking that I destroyed a registry-entry or something similar...
I installed SPB MS 3.5, and then went to assign varies tones to contacts. When I did that, the only thing that played, even after the selection was entered, was the general ringtone I had earlier set. However, when I got a call from the ring-specific contact, the correct ringtone played. So, I thought I had this same problem but it seems to have corrected itself I guess.
Just for your information.... I've got many mp3 ringtones in the /My Documents/My Ringtones folder.. and they're all accessible to TF3D per-user ringtone selection..
don't have any real suggestions for you.. just informing that mine work fine..

I'm having a similar problem.
I upgraded the rom yesterday from 6.1 to 6.5 (HTC official) and restored two mp3 files I used in the earlier version.
Both files are in the right place, "\My Documents\My Ringtones", but I can only select them as ringtones.
One of the files I used as my email tone but it now doesn't appear in the drop-down list of tunes for "notifications" (only in the ringtone list) which it did in 6.1.
Any ideas?
Putting files in My Ringtones will not work for Notifications, even on older OS such as wm 6.1 and 6.0.
If you want to use the media for notifications, try putting them in the following exact locations:
My Device\Windows
My Device\My Documents
My Device\Application Data\Microsoft\Sounds
My Device\Storage Card
My Device\Storage Card\My Documents
The following locations are for wm 6.0 and 6.1; I haven't upgraded to wm 6.5 yet, so it may differ on the new OS.
UPDATE: just tested padertov's 24CTU file and it works as my SMS notification on my Pro2 by saving it as My Device\Storage Card\24 hours CTU.mp3

My solution
I was having the same problem. My mp3 ringtones were working but then stopped. I used total commander to delete the .mp3 file association. I then added it back. My mp3s are now assignable again. I put them under My documents\My ringtones folder.

I've tried what you say,
deleting association with total commander, soft reset, but nothing to do, my HD2 does not want to assign an mp3 for ringtone.
I think it could be a conflict with a soft, but I can't see which one.
Hope someone will be able to find a solution

Does anyone know where I can get some original Nokia and Sony Ericsson ring tones? I mean the standard ring tones/sms alerts that comes built into those phones. I want my phone to sound like a phone when it rings, not a freakin' radio...and I like those good old Ericsson/Nokia sounds way better than the ones that come with the HD.

I backed up some of the most common noika tones from some of my past symbian series phones, not many just the ones l like, like the Espionage tone.
Problem is theyre Midi, and some 6.5 WinMo roms will play them fine but none of the 6.1 WinMo seems to play them properly
I probably have to convert them first but I cbf.
Im sure if you search around you can find the stock tones.

look at the second post, the rapidshare link is still valid, the Second google result had a nice list of tones but all the links on that page were dead.
best of luck, a/v scan anything before you extract the files.
edit 2: Well I kind of want a more comprehensive collection too so i got that same file as mentioned above, its good, LOTS of Nokia MIDI files.
So.. If you have WinMo 6.5 theres a good chance the native Midi synthesizer will playback them no trouble, if you have WinMo 6.1 then you'll probably have to convert them first.
in here you have lots of nokia ringtones. But you have to register do download them.

at this stage no windows phones have ability to add custom ringtones, however there is speculation that they will be available to be purchased from the market place, and that apps could possibly add them as well.

I have bought my htc hd7 from o2 germany.
2 weeks ago, mango upgrade is available for my phone. I have updated my WP succesfully but,
this mango is different.
no messenger, no wifi hotspot, no general ringtone option etc.
my mango version is 7.10 (7720)

Hey buddy...I don't think the official wifi hotspot and general ringtone have been released.therefore, we are on the same boat,no worries.
In regards to the messenger,make sure you sign in to the correct windows live account,as microsoft don't allow secondary live account to get the messenger functionality and they blocked IM+ from offering live messenger...which is shame....
If you confirmed you use the same live messenger account as the primary account in your phone,then you can just simply go into messaging hub and set the chat status to online. For facebook,just go to setting and add the facebook account.

For the wifi hotspot,i think it is coming soon...got people reported that Mozart in India already receiving the latest HTC update which added the wifi hotspot function. However,not sure when for htc HD 7...I think it won't be too long.
For the ringtone stuff,I didn't use custom ringtones much(honestly never use it before). AfAIK, there are apps on marketplace that you can buy and download some new ringtone...
