[Q] My Evo 4G is Rooted--What Now? - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

For all you rooted Evo 4G users out there: So you've rooted your phone; Now what? Post any tips for rooted phones you have in this thread so others can have a better Evo experience.
Edit: 8/30/11 Awesome tips guys! Now, that we have a pretty good idea of the steps after rooting, post your favorite ROMs, kernels, etc.

Uninstall all of the apps you don't want.
Wifi tether without paying double for your data.
Working HDMI output.
Try a new kernel that gives better performance and better battery life.
Try a new ROM altogether (don't forget to nandroid backup first so you can go back).

firs thing i do on a stock rom that has been rooted is chase down a wlan teather app. im on cm7 and this is built in
then i install adfree, it blocks all ads for all the free apps, its kinda shady to block these but hey, it can be done so i do it.
vnc server on your phone is kinda cool but its more of a toy and not a need, once the app is running you can install the viewer on your pc and control you phone from across the room, but it does time out after a while for me for some reason.

Install cm7

k, so I followed most of your tips, but I wasn't satisfyed w/ cm7 because nothing worked, probably because I didn't wipe data before flashing it. I now have MIUI, vipermod, and the latest Savage Zen kernel. Thanks for all the tips guys and keep 'em coming!

.First you should read this http://www.androidpolice.com/2010/0...d-phone-with-rom-manager-full-backup-restore/
.then you should go here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=653 and find you a rom and/or kernel that you like and flash them
.then tinker with a few apk's that you can find either on here or on the web or some are on the market that have to deal with rooted phones (wifi tether, over/under clocking, root explorer)
.and enjoy

oops lol I guess I was too late.

You're never late in this thread. Aside from ROMs and kernels, post some valuable scripts and mods you would recommend.

I see, I didn't read carefully enough. lol. I would recomend the new HTC Sense 3.5 ROM that KING and Virus are working on. It is super fast, but it is still in the beta stages so a few bugs. Plus already has a really snappy kernel on it.
Edit:"Also IDK if you might want to make special ringtones for different people who text you but tasker does a great job at that. There is a thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...50&postcount=2 that helps you out with this."
I put that on another Thread but it seems to work here too.

[Q] Which root has least Sprint crap, most stable WiMAX, and best battery use??

So far I have tried unrEVOked and AVA-FROYO V10.
unrEVOked is little bit behind on latest kernels and is stuffed with Sprint garbage. It did have great battery life with 4G and WiFi enabled (12 hours for me).
AVA-FROYO V10 was OK, very little Sprint crap... but battery life on it was extremely unpredictable (from 4 hours to 12 with cell standby chewing up most).
Unfortunately the latest radio update messed it up and now I need to reflash everything, so might as well look at other roots.

unrEVOked and kernels ? LOL
I am sure they will move it to the right section.
Yeah, you are right, I did mean ROM. Had a massive brain cramp, so I called it a root

I didn't have the best luck with AVA V10, but V9 has incredible battery life. Here is a link:
http://www.4shared.com/dir/kqCqyssL/Ava_Roms.html
Whichever ROM you download, you can open the zip (don't extract), go to system>apps and delete any apks you don't want it to install when you flash it. Of course, make sure you know what apks you are removing first so you don't get problems later and have to end up re-downloading/re-flashing your phone.
unrEVOked is not a ROM, nor a kernel, and has nothing to do with battery life. Other than the superuser app showing up, it should not affect anything at all. It's a rooting process, specifically intended to unlock your NAND (S-Off, visible in the bootloader).
Popular ROM options are Fresh, MIUI, CyanogenMod. Fresh has fully working WiMax. CM is close. Don't know about MIUI, but it's probably not packing working 4G. None of them have any of the Sprint apps by default.
You can bake your own Fresh ROM with whatever you want included. CM doesn't even include the Google Apps by default (you can add them easily), so it's even trimmer.
Once you are fully rooted, and familiar with the nandroid backup process (and Titanium Backup), you can switch between ROMs fairly easily and make your own decisions.
To get started, root and then flash Fresh. Actually, wait a few days (but don't accept the current OTA if you haven't already), and install Fresh once it's been updated. Because it's based on stock with Sense, you can probably flash without clearing your data (DO clear your caches) and get off to a quick start.
Yeah, I am still learning this rooting process. I have very little time available for playing around a bit and no way in hell am I going to use time of my devs in the office. Hence me doing it the lazy way - asking you which ROM is the best for my needs and then flashing and forgetting it.
BTW, thanks for the advice so far. Saving me a lot of time!
MYNs is popular or if you want a stock one, I suggest looking at the ReEngineered Stock ROM that aamikam made. He spent alot of time fixing up the apks so that they are smaller in size and speeds up the ROM.
i would just find a rom that you like and run with it. the rom itself shouldn't make THAT much difference. from what i have seen, its your kernel that really makes the difference in batter-life and performance. Most of the bloat-ware in the majority of these roms can be removed pretty easily.
Myn has some great stuff for ROMS. Ava V10 (if you have bad battery, try a different kernel)
Here are my 3 fav Kernels:
Hero's Laptop Kernel (all i have to say is WOW)
Net's 4.2 or 4.1
King's CFS
ROMs:
Sense: Calk's or Myn's or for a pure stock feel try ReEngineered 3.70.651.1.
AOSP: Cyanogen Mod (No Contest)
Kernels:
I always stick with Stock on all the ROMs I have tried.
Have fun flashing man.
Try Azael X its very fast very little no bloat and stable 4G plus battery life is great he will update to 3.70 soon he's working on it now Rick is very picky about letting his roms out with bugs so he tests and tests before release

[q] **whats the best rom out today?**

Hey android fam,
ima keep this short and simple.
1. I rooted my htc evo
2. I want to know whats the best rom out there (2.3 with everything working 4g or close to it etc)
3. After i download the rom i want, whats the next step to install it the right way? (i already downloaded "titanium backup" what else do i need?)
thanks
A good starting place,
Try Cyanogenmod, MIUI, Myns Warm, and MikFroyo
I would add Salvage-Mod 1.2.1 to the list mentioned above, specifically with the Tiamat 3.3.7 kernel and LauncherPro. It flies on my device and everything works.

If your looking for AOSP try Cyangenmod, Ultimate Droid,
Sense My favorite so far is probably Mikfroyo.....Second Myns warm...third Fresh....
Just flash all of them and just mess around to find out what you might like. a good starting point is to download Rom manager but don't use that program to flash, just use it to download, then boot into recovery and flash manually. Good luck...
If your really wanting to play around you can try flashing different kernels which I am still trying to figure out a good sense kernel to use for mikfroyo. Good luck
Thanks everyone

Personally, I have been running Deck's 2.3.3 GB AOSP ROM. It's fast, stable, and everything works, including 4G. I use Tiamat's 3.3.8 SBC kernel and get great battery life as well. You can find his thread at PPC Geeks. He said when he releases the final version, he'll post it here at XDA.
Deck's GB is def my fav GB ROM. Everything works. The final version (1.0) is releasing today at 6pm est. The main thread is at PPC geeks, but Deck said he would start an official thread here once 1.0 launched.
"Best" -- in this case -- is subjective.

Congrats on rooting. Just remember that rooting isn't everything. It's just like getting an admin or superuser account on a Windows or Linux machine. It gives you the ability to modify system files that you normally can't do as the default user.
You need to make sure that your phone is NAND unlocked and you need to flash an alternate recovery. A recovery is kind of like a boot-disk built into your phone. You can boot into "recovery mode" and flash data to the phone. This is how you install a new ROM. The two big recoveries are Clockwork and AmonRa.
Basically you download a ROM in zip format, put it someplace on your SD card where you can find it, boot into recovery, do a backup (make an image you can restore from if things don't go well) and then format data, cache, dalvik, etc.
Once you have a clean slate, flash the ROM from the zip file on your SD card and wait for it to finish. Reboot and enjoy your new phone! It's like installing a fresh copy of the OS with various modifications.
There is a bit more to it that all that but that is the gist. Once you are familiar with the process it's easy. Before long, you'll be comfortable with reading about a new ROM, making a quick backup and flashing it to check it out. If it is good you keep it, if it sucks you restore your old backup. I go through phases where I like what I have and then the bug will bite me and I try like 2 or 3 ROMs in a week.

Just my 5 cents, but you should get better battery life on 3.3.7, as in 3.3.8, the minimum voltage was raised to help those that flashed the kernel and natively got reboots.

FOR ME:
When I'm in an AOSP mood, it's CyanogenMod. It was the first one I tried and I'm too lazy to adjust to other AOSP roms LOL. I have tried other AOSP roms, but I like the features included in CM and the support he gives.
When I'm in a Sense mood, it's usually Mik roms (MikFroyo, MikZ, MikGinger, etc) because what he does to those roms is nothing short of amazing. Speed, stability, and everything just works. When Myn gets around to releasing his Gingerbread rom that's going to be my DD.

Well if you are looking for 2.3.3 with everything working including 4g and GPS I would recommend CyanogenMod. You battery life might be kinda crappy even with the Tiamat 3.3.8 kernel as compare to a 2.2 rom.
Im a fan of Mikz and Kings is you like sense. They both do amazing work and their custumization is top notch.
I'm running Myn's Warm TwoPointTwo (Sense ROM) with the Netarchy 4.3.1 cfs-havs-nosbc kernel and Launcher Pro Plus.
Lightning fast underclocked at 499 mHz awake and 128 mHz with screen off (using SetCPU). Battery life is shocking too with the Seidio 3500 extended battery. Unplugged at 7AM and heavy usage all day (phone calls, texting, email, web surfing, Pandora, etc) it's still around 45-50% at 11PM
Always searching for a better battery kernel though, lol
Jack
Well im on Kings Unleashed R-5 to.the the best rom right now, but im about to try a CM7 cuz people be telling me about the speed and stuff

Sorry, but people claiming everything is working on CM7 for htc evo obviously don't use their cameras. Still shots are not taken at full 8mp at proper aspect ratio. There is also no 720p recording.
Have a look at Elite Series III.It's super fast and has everything working. The theme it comes with is amazing. Proper flash instructions are on that thread and there is nothing else you need to fux with after flashing.

Not sure of the answer to the first question, but I am running Supercharger on RR Phoenix and it makes it a little snappier. Loads a little faster on reboot. Phoenix is already an amazing ROM, but SC makes it just a hair quicker. I am using option 6 right now...havent really had a need to try to get anymore out of it. Hope that helps!
I believe ERA's EC05 has everything you need for the supercharger scripts baked into the rom, you just have to run which ever scripts you choose after booting up.

[Q] Helpn out a friend few Q's on stock vs custom rom/kernal *read guides

Thunderbolt user here, I'm helping out a buddy of mine boost the battery life of his stock Evo.
What I have planned is:
Root the phone
Get rid of all the bloatware
Use setcpu to tweak the performance settings
Optional:
Custom Kernel so I don't need to use setcpu
^^^ I do this because he would be able to update to a new stock kernel if sprint releases one. If I'm not around him few months down the line. He's a novice, but if I can I'd show him how to do the other stuff.
What I'd like to do is:
Find a nice custom sense 3.0 rom (very stable and nice batt life)
^ There's a bunch of those, does anyone have a good opinion on a nice sense rom?
Thanks
You can try the team nocturnal kinged shooter rom runs great; as for sense kernels, not sure, as I run aosp personally. Also, you'll have better battery typically on aosp.

I would choose AOSP instead of any UI except for sense 3.0+, I prefer it a lot more. They seemed to of done quite a nice job .
One question though, can I turn S-ON by just flashing a stock RUU in the boot loader? Ohh I forgot, can I update clockwork mod updates via the app and not the revolutionary one?

Naw, you'll have to flash all the appropriate mods prior to running the RUU. That'll give you a stock rom, s-off, with no root access, til you re-flash a recovery.

[Q] Evo 4G Kernel

I just recently installed a custom ROM and i wanted to overclock my Evo because it was laging a bit but i heard that to overclock your evo you have to have a custom kernel. I have no idea what a kernel even is, lol. I was just wondering if anyone could tell me a good kernel, that i can use to both overclock my fone, and that won't brick it. chopsuey, goldenmonkey, poonsense and freedom are the current gingersense kernels meaning they run on android 2. 3. 3 Roms with sense tiamat, savaged-zen are the aosp kernels I know of off hand as I don't run aosp my particular phone doesn't like aosp for some reason after an hr or 2 every aosp Rom bootloops. I personally run The EVO classic v 0. 0. 3 with more freedom v. 9 golden monkey 1. 1 or chopsuey 9. 2. 7 depending on what I need battery performance or hdmi chopsuey 9,. 2. 7 runs hdmi well on my phone aggressive or more freedom give me good batterylife. and goldenmonkey gives me good performance for heavy graphics gaming but sacrifices the batterylife a bit just pick one or more to test download to ur SD and save somewhere ull. remember it go to recovery wipe cache dalvik cache repeat repeat again for good measure flash and test it out give it a few days to settle in b4 deciding to switch it up and if after 3 days or a week u don't like a particular kernel repeat process with ur next choice. I keep all my roms kernels mods and such in folders labeled what they are and for which Rom if thy are mods inside a folder labeled 0.roms,mods,kernels so its the first folder in my recovery to save my volume rocker some abuse scrolling in recovery
