Here's where I'm at...
I have a Droid HTC Incredible
I have manually installed the Froyo 2.2 OTA update file update.zip
Everything is working fine now
I want to get wifi tethering so I need root
Some questions...
Can I root a HTC Incredible that is running Froyo 2.2?
What is the best tool? Unrevoked? Their website indicates: “At this time, unrevoked3 does NOT work on stock Froyo (Android 2.2) phones”
Once I have rooted my phone, will it still run the same Froyo 2.2 OS that I recently updated to? Or will I be running a “recovery” OS? I don't quite understand all of the references to the “booting into recovery”. Please explain.
Where I want to be...
The end state I'm looking for is Froyo 2.2 with Sense UI (got that now) and free wifi tethering. Thanks for your help!
I bought my desire about 10 days ago, and I decided to root it. I followed some guide on the internet and used the unrevoked3 tool to root my desire. Perfect. Its now rooted and I now have root access on my Desire. Why did I root it? I just wanted to install the DSP manager App (installs surround effect on your phone). Installed it. Perfect. The phone has no problems at all and its fine. But I read on Engadget that Ginger bread (Android 2.3) is going to be released soon. I haven't installed anything else after rooting except for juice defender and the DSP manager app. Whats my problem? I need to unroot it. Simply because I need to be on the safe side, and to install any future OTA updates. Oh did I mention that I'm a complete n00b!
What do I need now? Your help. Please help me in getting my phone unrooted. I have a Desire A8181 with Android 2.2 in it (bought it with 2.2). Rooting was painless, but this unrooting seems like a pain ______. I seriously have no idea as to how to get it back to its original factory state. Any help would be much much appreciated! Thank you.
Not sure if these would help too -
Kernel Version - 2.6.32.15-gd96f2c0
Build Number - 2.13.707.1 CL33262 release-keys
Software Number - 2.13.707.1
I could help, but you'll learn more helping yourself: use search. (hint: ruu)

You got to be joking, you are gone unroot because you think you will receive gingerbread via OTA before there is a custom with Gingerbread?
If you really want Gingerbread stay rooted and wait for a stable rom, which will be released months before the OTA update (if we ever see Gingerbread officially on the Desire which i doubt).
If you answered yes on the first question, the post above has all the info you need.
Thanks Mr.Ghost, I decided I'll stay rooted for a while, like you said, I doubt if the desire will even get an update to Gingerbread (and incase it doesn't I might need to install some custom ROM with gingerbread for which I will require rooting again and I will need to search for the unrevoked3 setup again which is a boring process) It would be sad (and a shame on HTC's part) if the desire doesn't get an update (and the N1 gets it).
Thanks,
Imag xx
hey guys.
did anybody know here how to make 2.3.3 ota update root, i have tried gingerbreak that doesnt working showing just black screen.
my phn is s-on, I do it coz it wont accepting OTA update.
is there any manual process to make it root via adb shell or something like that.?
i dont want to install custom roms i already checked so much of them but the are not fully bugs free and not fully google compatible as i want..
It is not possible. True, not all the ROMs work great, but some do. Try Android Revolution HD 5.1.6.
You have to downgrade first to get root, and then S-OFF if you want to flash custom ROMs.
You can also downgrade, root, get Radio S-OFF, unroot, get OTA again and use GingerBreak. Then you can have root in the latest HTC Gingerbread ROM.

OTA didn't came when radio is S-ON. thats y i did this..
Your phone is always S-ON when it is stock, so surely OTA will work then. And even when it is S-OFF, it does not matter if your /system partition is in stock condition (no root, no bloatware removed).
HTC have stopped Gingerbread OTA because of to many bug (To many have reported problem with SMS, WiFi a.l.). It will be released new version within few weeks when those thing is fixed. Ref HTC support
Thanks jkolko for the useful s-off & eng-off guides. Should anyone else find it an issue, note that if recovery cannot mount your sdcard, you should try another sdcard (found this elsewhere in the forums).
Hi, any app for downgrading? Honestly, not à "hero" when it comes to touching my phone, but would like root (at least to get rid of some stock apps).

To have root in 2.3 you need to use the downgrade guide to 1.32. Root and S-OFF and update to Gingerbread using 2.3 RUU. Then use Gingerbreak .apk to root. Now you have rooted S-OFFed Gingerbread 2.3

Updated to 2.3 from fully rooted 1.32 by RUU, installed AMT and now have su and full root Gingerbread AMT relay works, thanks to developer of script...
Hello Frendz,
The day before yesterday HTC sent an upgrade to the factory default OS (i.e. 2.2 froyo) on my DHD and I happily upgraded to 2.3 Gingerbread. Now, before updating I had permanent root access on my desire through Visionary but just after the update I realised I do not have root anymore. I would appreciate any comments and other experiences in this matter.
Also, during my own research I came across Gingerbreak which is probably the best around for rooting the 2.3 version but all I wanna ask is, if I still need to downgrade to gain root access or is it possible to directly use ginger break somehow? If I am not flashing another Rom, and all I want is Superuser rights.
As, I have never flashed any other find on to my DHD and I was using the stock interface since the start obviously with visionary root.
Also, whichever way I do it, I would loose all my contacts apps or we can avoid that. Can anybody please suggest any good (possibly free) backup app.
Tooo Long to read but any help and replies will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Anyone have any idea when Visionary or another One Click will work on a stock DHD running 2.3.3? I only want to root to get Set Cpu to improve my battery life.
You can trust my word.. Never.

Wow, that's a bold statement in tech lol
Any reason why this build will never be hacked when seemingly every other one is?
Not doubting yr word at all tho lol
Because it uses (as far as we know) pretty much flawless security measures that prevent us from doing much anything. Previously the devs found a way to go around the main security barrier after two months of trying, and now HTC blocked that security hole. As downgrading is possible, there are really not much interests to try and crack the new builds. Especially as it seems like a mission impossible.
....sigh.....
and since downgrading, gold cards etc etc is not my favorite, still waiting for a simple apk "for dummies", I guess I can forget to get to root mine.....
Those guides are really not so hard. Read them a couple of times, and if you still do not get it, ask your friend to do it. You can also join #AndroidRevolution IRC channel, somebody can hold your hand through the process. If I am logged in, make sure to send me a private message in IRC so I notice you.
thanks for the offer! will read again & probaply come back t you for help
Indian Desire HD
Apparently the Indian DHDs running 2.3.3 cannot be downgraded to root.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
You can install seraphic custom Rom if you like its just a stock Rom with stock kernel and root access. I love that Rom, closest to stock you can get on rooted DHDs IMO.
yes, it really sad that to say 2.37 OTA upgrade cannot be downgrade this time, I really want to downgrade or just root it :'(
nothing can do this time
A mate of mine has a Desire Z running 1.42.405.2 software and would like my help in rooting it. But is that even possible at present without downgrading to froyo?
At the moment? No it's not, but I am sure there will be in the future. The downgrade is painless though. If you need help with rooting or the downgrade you can go to webchat.freenode.net and the channel is #g2root
Don't worry about being stuck on Froyo, if that is the reason for hesitation on rooting. After root, you can always flash a pre-rooted version of the Sense Gingerbread ROM, posted in Development. There is a version that is purely stock, or you can flash a more custom ROM like Virtuous, which is the GB update plus some nice modifications and optimizations.
I wouldn't hold my breath on waiting for a non-downgrade root method. The hole that allowed Visionary, rage and gfree to obtain root was closed by HTC last December. And nobody has found a new method since. But I don't know if anyone is actively working on a new exploit at present. So in theory, somebody can find a new method anytime. But its been 8 months now.
I am tired of watching useless YouTube videos, reading useless comments, and doing it from November until today. My Desire HD is updated, as you all DHD users know, the latest update is the Sense 3.0 update, and now it's a 2.3.5 ver. Android on it. The question is? How can I root it?? I REALLY want to root this phone but I couldn't find a solution for 2.3.5 Desire HDs, just the Froyo ones. Help please! I tried GingerBreak, SuperOneClick. Nothing happens, they run forever and do nothing.
Hey dude.
Did your DHD come with Gingerbread or did you OTA update to it?
If your DHD came with Froyo and you updated to GB, you can factory reset your DHD to take it back to Froyo, then follow the instructions here to downgrade to 1.32 then you can root etc...
Regards.
Greg.
Thank, it came with Froyo as I've bought it when came out.
You can use AAHK (advanced ace hack kit). Search for it on the site. It is updated to root all versions of Android officially released for DHD. No need to this manually as the AAHK does it all on its own in mere minutes. Just make sure you really read what needs to be done before running it. It really is a very simple process. If you get stuck running it, AAHK has an irc support chan so you can ask there or in the thread directly.

Donno if I am missing something but i cant find this AAHK thing, and the factory reset does not downgrade my phone, just removed all my stuff, but still 2.3.5 and sense 3.0. Why is it so complicated...
Use search in xda. Aahk will find the thread.

I found Jkoljo's method easiest. One click root s/off Downgrade , then root. Easy as 1,2,3
Hey dude.
Here is the link to AAHK http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1259821
Hope that helps.

Hi there,
I'm in the same situation as the TS, also with the stock OTA Gingerbread update. So, I understand that a downgrade is unavoidable during the root process right? I understand that AAHK is the way to do it. My question is, will it OTA update back to my current version of GB 2.3.5 with Sense 3.0 after the root and downgrade? Or is OTA updating after this process dangerous or will it undo the root? I'm kinda guessing that flashing the stock 3.12.405.1 ROM manually will undo the root process?
I know there are probably many magnificent ROM's out there that I could flash. But I just don't have the time to identify the differences, try things out and maybe change to another ROM because of bugs. I did do that back in the old WinMo days. Then I would probably flash a new ROM weekly, because there was something faster or more bugfree. Because, even a ROM from the greatest chef has some bugs. I don't have time for that anymore unfortunately, so I'd like to stick with the stock ROM which is good enough for me.
In fact, the only thing I want is root, in order to control permissions from apps (Permissions Denied app) and make better (Titanium) backups. I want nothing more.
Please help me out!

You could OTA update back to 2.3.5, but you would lose root! ;-) Here is a pre rooted stock ROM you can use after rooting: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1382235
Tool to root as mentioned before: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1037315
