Hi Everyone,
I'm a software/hardware student in college and I thought I'd post my idea here and get answers/feedback.
I would like to write/code an application to use my cell phone to output white noise and jam other cell devices (basically jam 850MHz,1900MHz) in my vicinity. I have a Sprint HTC Touch pro2 and have SIM, Radio, and Hard-SPL unlocked it.
Programming this would require a lot, so I'll just ask the community the basic question: Is this possible? How easy would it be to write it?
Any feedback and answers would be great. I'm sure this is an open/shut case and it will make me look completely foolish if it's not possible, but positive reasoning is appreciated.
Thanks.

Thankfully, you can't. Why would you wanna do that anyways? There's a lot of bugs to be fixed and apps to be written, why don't you use your 'skils' in that direction.
No offense, but I'd hate to be within your area and need to make a 911 call only to have my signal jammed.
As the person above me posted, use your talents to help move forward some things that MS has let stagnate. Use your talents to write an app that will send an amber alert at the touch of a button. Your skills can be used to create a program for people like me, with a medical history, and all I would need to do is push a button and a In Trouble alert would go out to a pre-set group of people in the event that I am in anaphyllactic shock and cannot breathe...I'd LOVE to have something like that on my phone.
The point is, just because you may be able to do something doesn't mean you should. Lets say you did somehow create that program and someone died because of you and your program...yes that is probably an extreme case, but wouldn't it be better to use your talents to HELP.
This would be highly illegal to do first of all (at least in the US). Also you'd need a much more powerful transmitter, afterall it's your phone versus a dedicated cellular tower. I'm going to guess that sending enough current through your phone to output that much noise would absolutely fry the electronics, if not at least destroy the battery.
Here in the US, there happen to be federal laws against doing exactly that.
"Willful interference with the lawful transmission of a radio signal", I believe.
I would love to see this idea implemented in a movie theater!

So when the theater catches fire nobody can call for help?
Yes, yes, we all understand that idiots who can't silence their phones and stay off them in inappropriate settings are infuriating. This is still a terrible idea.
Let's say I'm on-call, which in my case is 1/4 of my life. I decide to risk going to the movies, and set my phone to vibrate in case the hospital needs to reach me. They send a text message, so I can discreetly pop out in case I'm needed - it's no different from someone who wants more popcorn or needs to use the toilet. Wow! I make it through an entire movie without being interrupted, or so I think until I get to the car and a flood of messages and missed calls suddenly appears on my phone.
Unfortunately, I had no way of knowing some moron had illegally blocked cellular signals and sat through a movie while your mom was dying in the ER. Are you going to cut me much slack for not having responded to 114 messages while the ER was desperately trying to get in touch with me?
Didn't think so.
Thanks to everyone for the replies, regardless if it's possible or not. I did not mean to start a moral war or argument. All moralities and emergency-call situations set aside, it would still be fun to make IMO.
I've been looking online, and if you wanted to properly jam all cell signals, you'd have to jam a range (824MHz - 894MHz and 1850MHz -1990MHz have to ALL be white-noised to accommodate for duplex cellular communications on all US voice uplink and downlink frequency signals). I think that with the range it would have, I would notice an emergency occurring close enough to be able to switch it off for people to make emergency calls.
Yes, cell phone jamming is illegal to use in the US, but is not illegal to possess (like illegal narcotics). I looked online, and the actual legal violation you would be charged for is a property-theft-related charge, since carriers purchase frequency bands as property for use in locations they pay for, and you'd be shown as stealing their property. I'll have to read the . I'd mostly be using the app to screw with friends (or my girlfriend who "absolutely HAS to take this call" that's completely unimportant and ruins our dates). I would make it easy to turn on and easy to turn off.
On the other hand, an emergency SOS application to ICE (In Case of Emergency) friends would be an easy application to write. In fact, in India, they have developed a cell-phone jammer that will intercept all emergency calls and texts (outgoing and incoming) and allow them to go through.
I just think of the idea as a fun mod to develop. Is there any professional mobile programmers out there that support my cause?
i actually own a cell phone jammer, and trust me, the thing sucks more power then a phone could deliver and it can get insanely hot. I do see both sides of this argument though. It is really funny to screw with your friends. Especially when you walk into an at&t store and laugh at all the iphones saying "no service" , and then all the employees stare at you because your the only one in there and all their phones say no service. But when i bought mine, i did take into consideration that people do need to be reached by phone for emergencies. that's why when i use mine, i only use it when i'm in someones house and know that there is nothing that could go wrong emergency wise, or if I'm in public, i will only use it if someone is on there phone talking pointlessly or loudly. BUT, i only leave it on until there phone call is disconnected and then shut it off. I also have to agree with Toleraen, your phone isn't going to be able push out and transmit that much noise.
There are already such devices in existance. They are illegal in the US. One of the schools around here wanted to impliment one to keep students from using cell phones on the premisis. The FCC said no way, so they just check cells at the door now, along with other highly dangerous devices like toothbrushes and Q-Tips that can do bodily harm as well as distract from class room attention spans.
Emergency calls can still be made from land lines. If you are an on call ER physician, why are you at the movies while my mom is dying? It would seem that your skills would be much more valuable at an actual ER while you are on call.
Personally, I would rather go with the much more legal HREF gun which shoots a directional EMF pulse that just smokes the teenie bopper's bedazzled phone where it sits...
These jammers are not illegal in every country btw. Our Grand Opera Theater (free translation from greek lol) has that implemented in its rooms. So do many universities.
I personally i'm kinda on the against side, however it could be usefull in the above mentioned cases. Still I would like to strangle the person who "just happened to decide i should stop MY call on MY phone", but i have to admit it could be fun being on the other side of the situation

"on call" means they can call you if needed, it's not the same thing as being on duty. Medical facilities often have a staff capable of handling normal volume as well as x# of people on call in case volume rises above normal.
I've worked in a few "sensitive" areas in my life and there were what they called "bafflers" that would block cellphone transmissions. These were apparently well hidden away and not easy to know what they even were but yup, within the radius of where I was, no cellphone unless you had a 'special' cellphone that could work within a certain (read monitored) bandwidth of cell ranges.

You know how when you're on a long phone call the phone/battery start to heat up? That's you transmitting on a single channel. There are several hundred channels in that frequency range that you'd need to transmit, at a strength greater than the cell tower.
I don't think it's a matter of the software being capable (although you'd have to rebuild the radio firmware I would imagine), it's a matter of the hardware being capable. Discharging the battery that fast would be extremely dangerous and likely result in failure and/or burnination.
I think this poor guys request is gettin a bit blown out of proportion. No harm was intended, just a fun little prank. I understand an extreme case could happen where "your mother" would be in dire need of medical assistance and that ends up killing them. But jeeze, I'm pretty sure all the guy is trying to do is have a little fun with his friends. Funny idea but yea, might not be a very smart thing to do...

Here's an exercise to test this hypothesis: phone someone whose exact location you don't know using a landline. Did it work? If so, wait about 10 hours and try again. My prediction is that, unless that person remains next to a wired phone at all times, sooner or later this will fail. Are they going to let me drag a landline phone (with a REALLY long cord) into the movie theater with me?

1) How am I supposed to know ahead of time when your mom is planning to die?
2) I'm a specialist. There are two in my specialty in our area. That means I either live in the ER all the time or go about my life and live with interruptions.
Do you actually believe doctors sit around waiting 24/7 for people to show up? To clarify, Emergency Department physicians aren't typically ever on-call at all. They work scheduled shifts and are usually occupied the entire time. In large tertiary ER's, some specialists (orthopedics, general surgery, psychiatry, pediatrics, e.g.) may be scheduled for shifts. Most specialties don't have enough people to waste them sitting around in the ER, so they're on-call. You're not going to find a neurosurgeon, dermatologist, ophthalmologist, endocrinologist, etc. twiddling her thumbs in the break room. Many specialists cover several ER's in an area. At which one should they hang out if they were to decide to do Sudoku while waiting for something to happen?
If I were in an area with 29 others in my field with whom I could rotate call, I'd certainly hang around the house and not go to movies or whatever. That's not the case, and I'm on the other end of the beeper a great deal of the time. Since I'm on-call for a week at a time, waiting until tomorrow is not the simple solution it might seem. I have a family and a life to live. Most of my sleeping, eating, grocery shopping, and movie-watching gets done on-call. (In case you're curious, no I don't get paid in any way for being on-call but am legally required to be. It's rare that I get paid anything when I race to the ER and spend my kid's birthday tending to someone.)
Hey, you asked. Did you really not get the point that there are legitimate reasons why blocking cellular signals, even in movie theaters and restaurants, is a bad idea? I used what's called "an example" to illustrate a point about unintended consequences. In this particular case, I used a real-life example from my own experience. It shouldn't be that difficult to imagine a fairly different example that makes the same point.
If you want to pick nits, we can do that all day. I still contend that blocking cellular signals, especially if this is unknown to people in that area, is a really terrible idea.

I agree in both aspects. One inspiration is the annoyance with my girlfriend's cell phone etiquette. She has a friend that calls her all the time. While were hanging out, on dates, etc... and my girlfriend always picks up and they chat chat chat... annoying. Another reason is the experience. I'm a software student at a tech school and the learning gained from it would be amazing (which, btw is the reason I haven't replied in a few days... sorry, finals week).
Agreeing with a few others, the phone does not seem to be capable of doing this safely, and for very long. Even if it were a quick flip-on, close-down process, it would be very hard to write as a mod within windows. I would have to gain control of the radio from Windows, and find the drivers and commands to send signals out to the radio to broadcast, which would not be that powerful, maybe not even powerful enough to even cut an entire signal... maybe drag down or make difficult. If not possible to make within windows, it would have to be an OS or bootable environment (meaning, most likely, it would be changed to only have that function, no Windows) :-(
I've seen various projects of hardware/software students making these devices, such as the Wave Bubble project (google it, it's cool).
OK, another question. Has anyone worked with a cheap jammer that works on both US frequencies or has designed hardware to do it? Is there a place where someone could point me to solder and make an easy and powerful jammer (for information purposes, of course)?

Then you must be a freshmen, otherwise if you'd actually taken any electrical engineering classes at all you'd realize the phone cannot function in this way. How do you think it is possible for the transmitter, which is filtered to transmit at a very narrow frequency band so it won't interfere with all the other calls going on in the adjoining channels, can be made to transmit simultaneously across a frequency spectrum of 210 Mhz!?!? There are so many physical impossibilities to what you're wanting to do that it's pointless to even address them all.
I'll just say that you're trying to do is synonymous to taking a single garden hose and its little stream of water, and modifying it to somehow make rain all over a whole town, just because it would be fun to do.

On my first post i said that i bought a jammer. http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.4355 this is the one that i bought and it's at half the price of what i paid, $26 for a cellphone jammer that operates on both GSM and CDMA frequencies is insane, they usually go for at least $200 for 1 frequency. it does fell kind of fragile, but i've had mine for over a year now and it still works great, range is good, and battery life is about 5 hours long. the only downside is it can get really hot if its on for about an hour. and you will click the button on accident when its in your pants, so you will know if its on by you having no service, or if your pants are a blaze. Comes with a wall charger and car charger. I like to jam peoples cell phones when there talking on the phone in there car, it's to funny and they shouldn't be doing it anyways.
i would be happy if one of you genuises would fix wm6.5 so that i dont have to reboot 45 times a day because of it getting so slow i cant even use it.
Apologies for starting a new thread, but haven't seen anyone else with this unique situation.... just been to pick up my new HTC Desire from the sorting office, and they've sent me not one, but two - thanks T-Mobile!!
Has this happened to anyone else? I assume I will be on two seperate contracts if I keep quiet... What should I do, given how tempting this appears to be on the surface?!

Heh, i think you should just keep it somewhere until T-Mobile find out their error.. i think its like a 2 month period after which you can keep it! Dont know the laws in the UK though.
At the very least, I would call them up asking how many numbers I have on my account. Did they send you another sim?
I ask because I upgraded, and was sent my phone from Carphonewarehouse, but I was sent another sim card. And it's not a replacement as the package shows it's separate number. I called to ask how many numbers I have on my account as they've sent me another sim, the lady laughed (she had a sexy voice actually, but that's for another time!) and she told me that I have one number and she has no idea what I should do with the extra sim.
So just make sure you aren't paying for two then either:
1. Return it - and go to heaven with a clear soul,
2. Keep it as a spare - not making any significant gains and being morally grey,
3. Sell it, - make significant gains, and go to hell knowing that you made some money in the recession by someone's mistake. You'll save money on heating down there!
Lol

Yeah, I didn't mention karma. But I'm a business man.
What goes around, comes around. With interest.
Lol if you sell if or keep it, yes you are breaking the law if they can prove that you realized that this was in fact a mistake.
I would just let them know they made the mistake, but that they sort it out rather than you having to post it etc.
For my sins and to help me pay for nice new mobiles, I am a lawyer and OnlinePredator is right - you cannot profit from someone else's mistake where it was obvious to you that it was a mistake. In the same way if your bank accidentally credits your account with £2million, you can't blow it on whiskey!
dont listen to these guys they're just jealous u have two.
u just need to find out how many numbers there are on your account whether u wait for ur first bill or call them up.
hpoefully u didnt sign for both packages but just say u recieved one.
As a previous poster mentioned I would check with T-Mobile to see how many numbers are on my account. If it is just the one, I would keep the other handset and see if T-Mobile eventually relaise their mistake.
Hmmmm... think I'll go down the "clear soul" route!! Thanks guys for your helpful comments... I'll let you know what T-Mobile say!
A similar thing happened to me many years ago. Ordered hifi from catalogue, when first statement was recieved it listed 2 hifis, telephoned company and told them we only recieved the one, which we did. On our statement after that one there was no hifi listed. To this day I have not paid a penny towards the hifi which was £850.00.
This is kinda amusing. But if you want legal speak, the lawyer (humans made after all the souls had been allocated, LOL!) is right. There have been various cases, especially with banks, where people have been, erm... "allocated" items, money even company pay, that wasn't meant to go to them. As much as years later, they were made to give it back. In the same that that in various countries you have many years to take legal action after certain events.
But you have taken a higher path, the path of the spiritually enlightened. You are a pure soul. Arise and take your rightful place with the blessed Android community. Arise my brethren.
Actualy im pretty sure the ownous is on the company to correct a mistake... Large somes of money is one thing but for items there is a grace period where you must keep it boxed and ready to be given back...
After that time has gone i think its 6 months the item is legaly yours.
If they have no clue atleast open it to see if it has the pink hue issue lol then keep the one that doesn't.
i say send it back, every one will end up paying for t-mobile mistakes, companies don't lose mony they just charge there customers more.
well ring them up and ask for a returns envelope, then if they don't provide one after 14 day the product is legally yours. (im not a lawyer)
Believe me ... The nature works in balance
Day and night, right and wrong ... you got the idea.
If you dont order it, it is not yours, send it back ...
Otherwise, nature will take something from you to "balance" what you "owe" (because you dont return it). Probably not immediately, but later.

good choice!
Did you unpack them? I'd really like to know if you are seeing any difference in colour, especially if anything is more pink one either phone.
I'd be inclined to open them both and then send the worse one back!
You should check for screen quality - Pinkness and faulty pixels.
Buttons - Correct travel and action.
Case condition.
Just my opinion!
No don't send it back!
It is a blessing .... people say what goes around comes around. Maybe you did something good before and you are getting rewarded lol
Nah ... honestly if you send it back you are a good person ... many people say they would but honestly would they actually?
I'd like to warn anyone who is considering purchasing their Galaxy Nexus from Handtec to think twice! Handtec does their business in a VERY unprofessional manner and it may impact you receiving the device you paid for as a result. I pre-ordered a Galaxy Nexus with them on 11-18 in the morning. A few hours later I received an email from them stating " Thank you for your purchase with Handtec..
This email is to notify you that your order has passed all security checks.
Your order is ready to be processed according to your selected delivery options and subject to stock availability.
Once your order is shipped you should receive tracking via email.
Please keep your order number safe for future reference to your purchase."
I later found out that in order to get information from them you have to constantly check their blog site because they don't update their official site with up to date information regarding their products, and even worse THEY DON'T COMMUNICATE INFORMATION REGARDING CHANGES IN PRODUCTS TO THOSE THAT ARE AWAITING THEIR ORDERS! What happened is that due to a bug that effects some Galaxy Nexus devices, HANDTEC STOPPED SHIPPING PHONES OUT unbeknownst to me. They also state on their blog that if you want to still receive your phone, that you have to email them and let them know. Well how the hell am I supposed to know to email you to let you know that I still want my phone IF YOU NEVER CONTACTED ME TO LET ME KNOW I NEED TO DO THAT?!!! I don't check your blog every single day! Ironically enough, I had a live chat with them this morning after checking their blog to confirm that they were indeed shipping. At the time that I checked their blog this morning it simply stated they were shipping devices. I contacted handtec to request that they ensure that my device would be shipped out today. Well apparently later on in the day they updated the blog to state they aren't shipping out anymore unless you email them to request it. Well...SINCE THEY NEVER CONTACTED ME IN ANY WAY TO LET ME KNOW OF THIS CHANGE I NOW WILL BE DELAYED IN RECEIVING MY PHONE.
Handtec is COMPLETELY UNPROFESSIONAL! Customers don't check your blog site everyday multiple times a day. I paid damn near $700 for a device that I EXPECT TO RECEIVE ASAP. If they are concerned if people still want it, then they should email people and let them know their phone will ship, and that if they do not want it, that they should email them to let them know. The concept of by default not shipping someone a product they just paid $700 for is ASININE! The concept that they only communicate updates concerning products people have paid for on a blog site or twitter is EVEN MORE ASININE AND BEYOND UNPROFESSIONAL. If I were not a member here at XDA I would never have even known that I needed to email them to have them ship my phone...since the last correspondence I received from them stated my order was being processed...and that when I spoke to them on the live chat this morning they made no mention of this. THIS IS COMPLETELY UNACCEPTABLE. There are people who have ordered from other places that have had much better experiences (like clove, negri electronics, expansys, etc). I wrote this to warn anyone who is considering purchasing from HANDTEC....DON'T DO IT. ORDER YOUR PHONE FROM SOMEWHERE ELSE!!!
And to those who may say well you only have to wait one more day...it isn't that simple. I expected to receive my phone before Thanksgiving. I will be leaving for Thanksgiving and won't be back for a little while. Fedex will only hold your package for a short period of time, after which they return it to the sender. So this ineptitude on the part of Handtec has caused a problem.
I think you're overreacting, it makes sense that they stop shipping on a defective product, and it also makes sense that they let you know it is defective before they shipped it to you. I'm sure if you lived in an area where you used the 900mhz frequency you would be more grateful.
actually i disagree with you this is a faulty product with a serious flaw until it is rectified they are selling a known faulty device under the pretence that its ok
yes they could've kept shipping like clove but personally i like that they ceased orders rather than ship a faulty product, that in the event of a recall would require everyone to send it back.
we all knew this had happened hours ago
handtec is a good reputable company who chose this option to avoid mass returns due to a potential recall. this way YOU are responsible for returns cause you knew ahead of time that it would arrive essentially broken
however i do think a mass email should've gone out to everyone saying they had ceased and what to do rather than just leave it up to the blog that i do agree with
this thread should be deleted :\
Sooo...you're going to receive your phone a day late?
Have you called the news yet? You might still have time to get it on the 8 o'clock special.
Jokes and sarcasm aside, it sucks when a company doesn't keep you up to date on something that's happening...but they most likely got more orders in a few days than your entire family has ever placed of *anything* in their lives. For a smaller company without a sufficient content-management solution it would be *incredibly* difficult to notify all the users that ordered this device that there was an issue.
Beyond that...you're flying off the handle because you won't get your phone for 1 more day? People that have Verizon were expecting to receive the phone before any other carrier in the world and now we're waiting until the 8th of December (possibly later). You don't see me flipping out about it to Verizon...because I'm an adult who has other things to occupy my time with.
Maybe get a hobby?
As I see it, you received the same email I received. I placed my order on Monday of this week. Not once did I receive an email notifying me of stock arrival, that I discovered on their site as well as here. So I waited, I also learned from these two same sources that they not only checked the stock for a known issue with the device but that they discovered it and halted shipping. Completely professional. The same methods they used to notify everyone of stock arrival is the same method they used to notify everyone that there are issues and they aren't shipping. They even provided you with a way to notify them if you don't mind receiving defective merchandise than let them know. Several did and they received emails of their shipments going out.
I had asked them to ship my product even its defective and they have still not shipped it. I won't be getting by thanksgiving now. I did email them that i am unhappy with it.. i don't think so they cared about that email. Its good thing they did ship the defective product at first time, but not letting customers know about it is bad.

No we didn't all know this happened hours ago. Had I known, I would have emailed them. They made absolutely no attempt to notify their customers of this change. If they are going to err on the side of not shipping, THEN THEY SHOULD AT THE VERY LEAST NOTIFY THE PEOPLE WHO ARE ALREADY WAITING. Completely unprofessional.

You don't read do you?.....I already addressed people who might respond with your smart ass response. This will not equate in waiting "1 more day". This will result in me having to wait until I'm back in town before I can receive my device. Next time read before you decide to make a smart remark. Thanks.

Wrong, completely unprofessional. They are assuming people are going to check their blog every day several times a day. If it weren't for XDA I wouldn't have even known to check their blog for timely updates to begin with. I guess I'm used to competent service where companies actually correspond with their customer. Furthermore, I checked their blog around 6am this morning (11am their time) and there was no new information on there. How many times today do you think I should have checked their blog? Why should I have to keep checking a companies twitter page or their blog?!...ESPECIALLY when I've already paid them my $700! The LEAST they can do is keep me apprised of information regarding MY PURCHASE. Why do I have to check information regarding MY PURCHASE on a twitter page or a blog?! THAT IS UNPROFESSIONAL.

I read very well, actually. I read your post saying you'd be out of town and wouldn't be able to get it right away. How long is out of town? Since you didn't say, my guess would be a matter of days. I'm going to be out of town this coming weekend, as well, and if Verizon launches the phone this weekend I'll say, "Hmm. Well I guess my life comes first and I'll have to pick up the phone when I get the chance in the future".
Once again, because I'm an adult and have priorities that outweigh receiving a gadget before everyone else that won't have an effect on my life in any way.
I understand you're mad, but you're flying off the handle and about to burst a blood vessel because you might have to wait awhile for a device that just released. If this isn't a first-world problem, I don't know what is.
When I was in the military I didn't complain and cry because I was going to miss Christmas...because I understood what the word "priority" meant. Put it on the backburner and get it when you get it. It's *really* not that big of a deal.

I've bought lots of stuff from both Handtec and Clove and never had a problem that was within their control. They rely on both distributors and Samsung to receive their products (they don't get product direct from Samsung) and, with high-demand devices, the communication can get muddled. Samsung's not exactly communicative.
If this has you wigged out, you definately shouldn't have imported a phone. If it needs service and you have to be without it for a month while it's repaired in the UK you will probably go apoplectic.
As far as not notifying (those that have preordered) people by direct email correspondence (at the time the decision was made to stop shipping) is unacceptable as far as I'm concerned, and if they don't have the ability to send a batch email of this type is not my concern.
In the future this type of business practice will weigh heavily on my decision whether or not to purchase from Handtec.
You are missing the point of my statement. For pre ordered devices, Handtech has a method in which they notify people of when they receive stock and that is their blog. I could understand you being upset if they emailed you saying it was in and then didn't email you to tell you to communicate if you want them to send it now. But that didn't happen. But I get it, you are angry, you wanted it before your trip, so don't do business with them. There is an entire other thread for Handtech and most over there seem to be happy with how they have handled it.
PS: Also, we know this issue effects 900mhz bands, none of us know how 850mhz will work out. For a $700 device, as you pointed out, wouldn't you want to know the issue isn't happening here in the US too?

First, save your little internet catch phrases for someone else. And quite frankly I don't really give a damn about what you thought when you were in the military. That has absolutely no bearing on what I'm discussing. The bottom line is, I'm not receiving what I was supposed to be receiving when I was supposed to be receiving it, WHEN I PAID TO RECEIVE IT WHEN I WAS SUPPOSED TO RECEIVE IT. It's that simple. Due to a company's ineptitude and unprofessionalism this situation has arised. If you can't seem to grasp that then I don't know how else to put it to you. When I pay for something I expect to receive it according to the terms I agreed to when I paid for it. I don't think that's asking too much. At the very least if there is a change, I expect to be notified in a proper manner of the change. All they had to do was email me, and I would have responded immediately and all of this could have very easily been avoided. Instead they gambled that I might check their blog for a 2nd time today instead of notifying me directly. That is unacceptable. If you can't see that then I don't know what else to tell you.
You ordered on the 18th right? Defects aside, you do realize no one knew on that day when they would actually be receiving their shipment? If you were familiar with importing a device, or asked ahead of time you would have known that "Expected Stock Dates" are in flux until they get it in hand.

Long nights for them....

What a ridiculous over reaction by the OP. Yes it's frustrating and had I not been keeping an eye on this forum I might have missed the blog entry. I've chosen to take delivery of my device but I still think Handtec made the right decision. The way it was communicated was poor but have clove etc done a better job? No they haven't.
In the end I emailed them at 5.30pm (UK time), I received an email with the tracking ref at 7.05pm and a final email from customer services at 9pm. (NB they ordinarily shut at 5.30pm).

This has nothing to do with Handtec not communicating with their customer and them HOPING you happen to go to their blog site. If the last email you received from them tells you that your order is being processed then you may not ever even check their blog...because you're under the impression that your order is being processed. Since they never contacted you to tell you any different you have no reason to believe different and would therefore have no reason to check their blog. COMMUNICATION IS KEY!

EXACTLY! If they don't have systems in place to send out batch emails, that has nothing to do with me. As far as I'm concerned I paid my money for a product and I expect to be kept apprised of information regarding MY PURCHASE. I don't think that's asking too much.

You're missing the point. Their method of communication is inadequate. It operates on the assumption that you will continuously and repeatedly check their blog. Let me remind you that I DID CHECK THEIR BLOG THIS MORNING BEFORE GETTING ON THE LIVE CHAT WITH THEM. I don't know about you, but I tend to not check company's blogs several times per day. I checked it today and that information was not there. THIS is why they need to communicate directly with their customers. Posting on twitter or a blog IS UNPROFESSIONAL! Furthermore, some people may not ever check their blog...so how will they get information about THEIR ORDERS?...look at it this way, if the last email you received from them tells you that your order is being processed then you may not ever even check their blog...because you're under the impression that your order is being processed. Since they never contacted you to tell you any different you have no reason to believe different and would therefore have no reason to check their blog. COMMUNICATION IS KEY!

Your argument would be valid if there was a definitive shipping date, and if the phones weren't defective.
For what it's worth, I just received an email stating shipments are on hold and the reasons. Professional? Like I said, with prdordrrs never hold the estimated dare on stone, will lead to disappointment.

I have an unusual problem
My brother in-law has, in a short version, Autism and Tourettes. One of his challenges is enforcement action, and one of his triggers is internet and sms. He needs to have a phone, but the sight of the envelope and the opportunity to send sms in the really stresses him, makes his day really bad and he gets very sick (needs medication and lies in his bedrom with no light and eyes closed)
So here it is: can someone out there help us to "create" a phone who's only function is to call? Is someone up for the challenge?
This is really imortant for us to improve my brother in-law quality of life
Hope to hear from u
hi,
seniorenhandys-online .de/cms/website.php?id=/de/kinderhandys/kinderhandy_easy5_plus.php (delete the spaces)
im sorry because its in german. the point is, it's a mobile phone for kids. it only has a call function and supports some emergency numbers like most of the phones for old people have.
maybe you find something like this (amazon, ebay, whereever)
Looked at the John's Phone? Only thing it can do is calling and thats it, Good example for more people in the world btw.
Yep Johns phone, might be expensive but easy to use made for old people really.
Not allowed to link but google Johns phone. Its the worlds simplest phone even the address book is a bit of paper and a pen.
It's said to be "The world's simplest cellphone." That's a bold claim from anyone let alone a previously unknown (in gadget circles anyway) Dutch team of creatives over at John Doe Amsterdam who wanted to build a basic phone -- the most basic phone ever -- that wasn't as dull and boring as other affordable phones on the market. So is it? Well, it certainly is basic. In the age of smartphones and cheap featurephones, John's phone is more clearly defined by what it lacks than what it has: no fancy color touchscreen display; no camera; no 3G radio, WiFi, Bluetooth or even GPRS data; no FM radio; no user-accessible storage; and no music player or apps of any kind. It can't even send a text message. It's just a quad-band GSM phone with an ink pen and paper notepad tucked neatly into its capacious recesses. That's right, pen and paper. So, it's definitely basic
Thanks )
Then I have ordered a new phone for Andreas, and hoping it will be a success
Funny thing is that after u tipped me about Johns Phone I call several suppliers here in Norway and no one had heard about Johns Phone Weird
Anyway, thanks for the tip
I really hope you will succeed and help your brother

Hi,
I sent my phone to HTC for repair as the screen was yellow and had poor battery life
they changed the screen and the battery and its amazing now
there are no yellow spots and it works like a charm
the battery lasts 1.50 days dispite heavy use
for those having issues please send it to HTC.
If u send it back to your retailer for an exchange u are not guaranteed to get a phone without an issue, screen especially whereas sending the phone to HTC they make sure there are no issues after a repair they have done a good job and Im really happy with the phone now
8 years I buy HTC phones and have very good experience with them.
Only once I had a issue with my phone, they picked up and returned the machine fixed in 3 days.
htc will fix/replace your device if it has yellow spots?
100% its called Mura. Tell them and they will replace the lcd and u wont face the issue ever again as it s a known issue
Mine had this issue mainly and the new screen rocks
they are easier to deal with then apple... i will never buy another apple product mainly because of their customer service...

Thats odd, I had an ipod touch a few years back and my experience at the time was really positive. I had a problem and scheduled a visit online, went down to the local mall and gave it to them, they swapped it out for me. I've never had that good of an experience with anything else I own. Of course, that was the only new apple product I've ever had, so maybe regular apple users have a different experience, dunno.
I also have sent my HTC off for repairs (to some place in houston). It wasn't the screen, I had a problem with my mobile data that all but stopped working indoors and barely worked outdoors. I'll see how that goes. They did tell me that if they need any parts, it will cost me $20 because my One X is from france, whatever that means. Its really sad though, I don't really have any other usable android devices at the moment so I'm stuck using my work's blackberry while I wait. I hate that thing, I feel like i've gone back to the 90's.
That's very strange they ask $ 20 for it because HTC warrantee is worldwide.
The phone they fixed for me that time was a HTC Artemis P3300 from the US and I live in Holland. They didn't charge anything.

Screenshot of the usage and display time please. Otherwise I think you have the same battery everyone else has...
Also Stock unrooted phone I believe? If so can perfectly compare with my usage.

Yeah, they said because I live in the US and I purchased a phone from france and the repair place is in the US they would need to special order parts. Who knows. I'm actually a little concerned since they mistyped my email address (luckily I got the email anyway since I own the domain) on the rma info and even though they received the device on wednesday (according to the post office), there have been no updates to the website that they've received or are repairing it. So... I'll have to call them again and see what happened.
There is something to be said to buying devices directly from a local carrier.

I sent mine off to HTC too in the UK. They picked it up on Wednesday, Thursday evening it was showing as device received on their repair tracking.
Today afternoon it is showing as in repair.... :\ hopefully i get it middle of this week as i have no phone to use whatsoever. hopefully they will fix my yellow spot, i think the gorilla glass was not sitting properly on the LCD. as when i pressed it slightly it was gone.

Better luck than me... My phone was delivered on the 13th but never made it to 'received'. I now have an escalation ticket into HTC to find it. It took a few calls to them for them to even care that my phone was missing, they just kept saying that the repair place was probably behind. I then had to call them for an escalation ticket, then had to call a few days later to re-do the escalation ticket because the last guy didn't do it properly, then a call a few days later to get someone assigned to the escalation ticket. I'm now at the few days mark again, so I'll have to call again on monday and can hardly wait to hear the response this time.
I couldn't use the blackberry any longer, so I spent the other night screwing with my old captivate to at least get it working again so I'm not living in the dark ages anymore.
So, after a bunch more calls back and forth, they finally found my phone. At which point it sat for a couple more weeks while they ordered parts. Then they called back with the bad news. Apparently they can't order the parts because it's an international phone and due to copyright laws (supposedly) they can't ship the parts it needs overseas. The only options are to 1) return the phone, 2) send the phone to HTC France or 3) Replace the phone with an AT&T One-X. Obviously #1 is out. #3 isn't a great choice either, because the AT&T isn't as good as the International version, and so I discussed #2 with them. #2 apparently is only an option if I have a French shipping address, which obviously I don't. So, I'm pretty much out of options.
I think I may just take them up on replacing it with the AT&T one, and since it's new, I'll just ebay it and take the money to -mostly- pay for the S3. I really liked the One-x, but I don't want the limitations it already has (SD & Battery) combined with the more severe limitations of the AT&T version (dual core, 16gb storage - I can't use LTE so that's not a benefit).
Luckily my captivate has been holding up during this whole fiasco, but It's really on it's last legs.

This makes sense but not for the reasons given. The U.S. One X's have the "app picker" disabled; users have to pre-set an event in settings for a single action to occur when clicking on a link in an app. Those sold outside the U.S. present a list of apps to choose from each time you click on a link just as every other Android device. Making sure the U.S. versions didn't have this feature enabled therefore violating Apple's patent is what held them up at customs. HTC U.S. restoring that feature, even on an international device, would be in violation of the patent. So if they had to replace the motherboard they couldn't load the international s/w on it and they have no alternative ROM with the feature disabled that runs on Teg3.

Great, thanks for that explanation. I didn't really understand and I don't think the HTC guy knew or was able to explain it either.
