first off i love this foum and all of its members it has help me numerous times before. I recently rooted my phone HTC Evo 4G with stock Gingerbread. Used revolutionary got s-off, rooted m phone put a few nice apps on there also flashed a new kernel b/c it was necessary for HDMIwin to work.
But then my mp4 files on my SDcard would only play sound and no video...and my camera wouldnt display anything just a white screen
please help me xda....your my only hope
thank you
Taylor
Every one of those problems points to a bad kernal. Try flashing the same kernal again, make sure you wipe only cache and dalvik before flashing.
It that doesnt work, then that means that kernal isnt compatible with your hardware/rom combo.
That's a great thing about kernels, you can flash them without destroying anything. Try a few different ones out and with each one try to demo every feature you phone has and you'll see that certain kernel-and-rom combos leave you with or without certain hardware or software capabilities. But there are enough out there where you'll find one that lets you use everything you need.

HDMIwin is for Sense 2.2 ROMs. They have yet to update it. Flashing a 2.2 kernel onto a Gingerbread ROM creates problems, such as your white screen camera.
If you want HDMIwin for Sense, then you will have to go back to a Sense 2.2 ROM. I think you can run some sort of app with the Tiamat kernel on an AOSP ROM like Cyanogenmod

For some reason my messages keep deleting themselves for no apparent reason. I do not use handcent or any other secondary messaging service. I've checked and double checked all of my settings and i do not have it set up to automatically delete anything at any time. I'm currently using Incredibly Re-engineered v2.3.1 and Lou's #8 kernel. The problem didn't ever occur when i was using the stock rooted rom.
So does this happen after a reboot, or just something you notice after putting your phone down then coming back to it...? Odd.
Try flashing another ROM, Lou makes a great EVO based ROM called Incredible Revolution. Give that a shot just to see if it is a ROM based issue.
Its a known issue... really annoying.

Nope. Only full wipe when switching roms. Although if youre switching kernels like u said, if youre going from one made by 1 dev and switching to another by a diff dev i would wipe the dalvik cache under advanced in recovery

Invisiblek is the way to goon Gingerbread roms. I've flashed his newest with OMFGB 1.1.1, and it is awesome. No problems snappy, excellent battery too!
Sometimes people (including me) mix up AOSP and Sense, sadly they don't like to play with others if you install them with the wrong rom. Racists, pft.
I have only had the phone about a week now so I have had a lot to learn. So far everything seems good now and I am happy. Now if i could just get better battery life lol.

The link you provided is the EVO kernel. Have you tried the Inc kernel?
Evo: http://www.thebcblends.com/cayniarb/Kernels/evo/Tiamat_Evo-v3.3.3-sbc.zip
Inc: http://www.thebcblends.com/cayniarb/Kernels/inc/Tiamat_Inc-v3.3.3-sbc.zip
The zip files have different contents.
EDIT - I just realized the thread you linked has both the Inc and the Evo versions. I saw that it was in the Evo subforum and jumped to the wrong conclusion. In any regard, make sure you are flashing the right one.
I just flashed
Inc: http://www.thebcblends.com/cayniarb/Kernels/inc/Tiamat_Inc-v3.3.3-sbc.zip
and i am still having same problem. Any ideas ?
Edit: Messing around with rooted phones is something I have just started so it maybe something simple I am missing.

seems to be doing just fine so i will leave it alone.
Thanks for all the help.
Have you tried Incredikernel? Kernels are really a matter of personal preference, but Incredikernel seems to be one of the best. (And also my favorite.)
I gave it a shot a while back and had trouble. My issue is that he touch screen doesn't respond. Incredikernel is recommended in several places but i had zero luck with it supporting the screen. I have started to wonder if its support for slcd.
I will try it again and see what happens.
Ok so I'm new to the whole flash kernal thing. I just flashed a kernal today and after the process was over I realized that my setcpu on boot would just restart continously and wouldn't allow me to access my phone at all. So after wiping the data and reset to factory I didn't install the setcpu but then my YouTube app would load videos but when it plays it only shows a white screen. I wanna know if there is a particular kernal that can fix these issues or perhaps the Rom I'm using is bad but its the fresh Rom and I haven't had any of these issues with this Rom until I flashed the kernal can someone please help me.

Have you tried a different kernal or reflashed the rom?
We're comin from a pure power source.
Yep, its the kernal. Different Evo's behave differently to kernals. That is a tell-tale sign the kernal you are trying isnt working with your phone.
Yes I have flashed a different kernal and still same issue I haven't reflashed the Rom. But I know there has to be a another kernal that fixes this issue so my only concern is what kernal is it

The dev section has kernals, or kernal manager from the market. Or the rom you flash has the kernal already

I reflash to odin, root with the new one click, wipe data, cache and dalvik, flash SRF, after a few hours it will freeze with a black screen and I have to pop the battery to re-boot. I've tried wiping 3 times, turning journaling on, etc. Every non-asop rom eventually freezes on me, however, miui and cm7 never have that problem? Looking for suggestions and and aswser as to why the aosp roms never have the same issue. Any other rom freezes with in 24 hours, cm7 and miui have never froze on me.

Don't worry. This whole thread makes no sense unless the OP means that CM7 is the only ROM that does not freeze.
The Epic has no other AOSP ROM that I am aware of. I guess even the stock ROMs freeze for the OP.

I'm wondering if you are using any cpu control apps? Setcpu? Pimp my cpu? Voltage control?
And/or any ram mamaging apps like auto memory manager?
I would suggest after you get on srf 1.1.1, get setcpu, do a quick auto detect on there, and change settings to conservative 200 min 1000 max, see if that helps, make sure you do NOT have both voltage control and setcpu installed.
Auto memory manager will also interfere with the ram tweaks in srf that's why I included that

CM7 and MIUI are both aosp, neither of those freeze, neither does a stock odin flash, any custom rom freezes.
@dr
I'm not using voltage control or setcpu, but I am using an auto task killer. Could that be the issue? And why is it only on non-aosp roms that I have this problem. Never had a bad flash with miui or cm7, and evey custom rom always freezes after trying everything.

Try them all for a few days and make your decision; what's "good" for one isn't necessarily "good" for another due to each user using their device differently. That being said, I've heard good things about G-Lite.

Though won't be much new changes to it since he's on EliteMod ICS now, which I love for the lightness/performance. Check the link in my signature if you want to try the ICS android version instead.

Kind of the long running 'light' rom for a while.
Ok
Ok so I decided I want to get the
Virtuous G-Lite ROM
But I'm new to all this and I dont understand what steps I should take and even what half of these words mean when I tried googling it
Can you please put me on the right direction ?
and will the Virtuous G-Lite support my UK Desire Z phone ?
Okay search for glite in the development forum and download the rom. It should be around 120mb. Then copy it to your sdcard. Don't put it inside any folder nor should you extract the zip file. Now reboot your phone into recovery and wipe data, cache, dalvik. Then choose the option to install zip from sdcard. Select the zip file which you copied earlier. After flashing reboot your phone. This information is based on the presumption that you have successfully attained root and s-off on your device.
EDIT: As you haven't rooted your phone yet I suggest you follow the link "minus" below in my signature. There download the appropriate pdf.

ok the GLITE rom is giving me problems because it wouldn't log in to my primary gmail account for the market, so I used my other account and now i get an error message everytime I try to download something from the market.
Do you recommend any roms out there or should I try Elite rom, but once again I dont understand this kernel stuff its worrying and i want battery life atleast
edit: I dont like go launcher pro it doesnt have the android notification bar
Edit 2: 20 mins later, I cleared the cache, dalvik etc then I went to the launcherpro site and got the latest one and my notification bar has returned (or just come) how ever market still doesnt let me download anything

you flash a kernel the same way a rom, just flash rom then kernel. elitemod cm7 has both kernel and rom

then flash zip
then reboot

reboot

Ohhh so when I try to install the ROM the kernel will be installed along side it right?! that means its going to be easier than I thought.
what is this super wipe?
yes, many roms come packaged with a kernel, some don't, some require extra packages such as gapps to be flashed as well. the link I sent you just need to flash the rom, all is bundled.
superwipe came about in the g1 days, orginaly by osaka. it runs a script to wipe your phone clean to help insure a good flash of the next rom. there are many variations but I suggest finding one that formats system/cache/data to ext4 as well as wipe
search for superipe+ext4 in the threads
and fyi fastboot -w is an even cleaner wipe but needs to be done at a computer and learn how to use fastboot

Yeah that bug happened to me, I tried to clear dalvik cache and then I updated the launcherpro then it randomly came. Is elitemod more easier and more customisable?what android version is it? Because on glite the battery life is brilliant but it feels like I'm sacrficing widgets (power control), the quick settings I had previously and the overal look is quite 'boring'
So with elite mod would I need to do any overclocking what so ever or anything else? And how can I make a back up of my current glite installion and revert back to it just incase elitemod doesn't work out for me
well your first step, just like when changing to any rom, is boot into recovery and make a backup. then you want to do a full wipe. then flash the next rom
nik3r has made a couple versions of elite mod, the one being suggested to you is based off of cm7 so its gingerbread, same as glite. it is slightly overclocked out of the box and has just about all the options avalible for a rom of its day, far more than glite. as for battery life, if you keep the oc/uv settings as they are you should get just as good battery life. I'm a moderate to heavy user and I do just fine with it
