Modifying the Battery, Signal bars and etc on the notification bar without 'cooking' an entire rom? I'd like to Modify Stock as much as possible without any chef's custom tweaks involved. If changing fonts was as simple as installing an app, I'm sure icons don't fall that far from the tree..

So I'm learning that odex won't be any good if i modify and edit these things, I was thinking, perhaps, before I Odin my next flash, will I brick my phone if I get the notification Icons that I want from someone's rom and stick it in an edited .tar? lol.
Notification are usually within the app so if you edit the correct apps you should get good results
I would rather odin a normal tar and then use root explorer to edit what ever app I want to

Eh, I think I'm being misunderstood. I don't mean the icons that each app have on notifications. I meant the Icons such as the 3G Icon, 1X Signal icon, Batter Icon, those, nothing else. I'd want everything else untouched.

1.Ok, download the reRFS rom.
2.Open up the zip with 7zip.
3.Copy the framework-res.apk to your desktop.
4.Exit that 7zip completely.
5.Open the framework-res.apk with 7zip
6.Go to drawable-hdpi, I'm 99% sure that all of the statusbar icons are here(wifi 3g 4g etc).
Now, if you want ones from a certain theme:
1.Download the theme
2.Take out its framwork-res.apk
3.Follow steps 5-6 from above, and copy the images from the theme apk to the stock apk.
4.Save your new apk.
5.Delete the donor themes system/apps folder, and framework-res.apk out of the system/framework folder of the themes zip, and put your modified apk in there. Flash in cwm.

Adding Ext Power as well as % Battery Mod is very easy thanks to Jim Panses super Arbeit
Many thanks also to Dena and whiskeybro for their Theme as well as vukandric for the Gingerbread theme.
This is how I did it on Darky's Rom, but it should theoretically work for any Rom based on JPU.
Possibly the Rom needs to be deodexed what most custom roms are anyway.
You will possibly lose animations but there is an easy way to get them back!
Read end of post for this!
Ok let's get started with the simple (but limited) method.
Step 1:
Download the theme from Dena, the Gingerbread Theme as well as the framework-res.apk attached to this post. Put them on your SD card.
Step 2:
Install Dena's Theme with extended Power Menu
Step 3:
Install Gingerbread Theme
Step 4:
With Root Explorer copy the framework-res.apk file out of this thread to /system/framework
Your system will most likely crash after that and reboot with the new framework-res.apk active. Then change the permissions to 644 meaning all boxes in the first column selected as well as the topmost row of the second column selected. All else unselected.
Done!
This should work for any rom, but I can't confirm it yet.
For anyone interested in making their own themes compatible with ext pwr + % battery here is the more complicated way to do this and the way I actually did it:
Step 1:
You will need Dena's Theme again as a base as well as a another theme that already has the % battery but lacks the power menu. (It work too if you don't have % battery yet, but then only for the ext Power Menu)
Step 2:
Extract the framework-res.apk of each theme.
Step 3:
copy everything from framework-res.apk\res\drawable-hdpi of the theme you want to use into the same (sometimes also called "...\drawable-hdpi-v4") folder within the framework-res.apk of Dena's Theme.
Do not extract the framework-res-apk files. Use 7-zip to open them and do the copying!
Step 4:
Do the steps from the "simple" guide but instead of gingerbread theme you use your theme of choice and the framework-res.apk you use is the one you created.
Animations:
Many Themes use custom animations now.
The most common is the fly-in animation.
These animations might be lost with this method.
To get them back simply download the "Animations.zip" from this thread. Extract and move to /sdcard/AndroidThemes and then install with Metamorph (app can be found on market)
Here is another way provided by kenkiller

Very useful, someone should try this on Darkyy's 5.2

No it doesn't. Not all rom can use it. Each rom framework-res.apk is different.

differently themed maybe, but it should still work as they are all based on the same framework-res.apk (that of JPU)
Animations are gone, but I have a good idea how to fix this
Animations are what puts Darkyy's ROM apart. Apart from his very good themed colors & graphics.
Thank you for the credits!

If you used my files as the base for this, its only a little part of the fly in animation, because i dont liked the whole package!

After installing the Gingerbread Theme all transitions are lost. I used the ones from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=774738

Thx for the info
Giving it a 5-star. Helpful.
it's pretty easy to regain the animations if u prefer the original.
Just extract the anim folder inside darkky's framework-res.apk with 7zip, and then overwrite the same folder and contents with the framework-res.apk you intend to copy to ur phone. But in the case of animations, it's needed to clear dalvik cache in CWM.
This actually does work on most custom roms, as long as they are deodexed.. Great work though..
Is it also possible to only add ext menu and keep glass window lock screen? I like the instant sms reader

I am guessing the theme themed the framework-res file. that is where the animations are located.
I can throw one together for you that has the animations in it if you would like.

The ICS animations actually are not pre-installed in Calkulin's latest 2.7. I've added them myself though as u have to add more files to the anime folder & the interger.xml has to be edited...

I can confirm that the ICS theme from Overstew overrides the ICS transitions. This is what I did (Im a noob so this is the first time using apk manager) Before i started, my phone was running Calk's EL26 Custom rom with Overstew's theme. First I tried to decompile framework from current setup (Found out you can't decompile themed framework). I ended up extracting framework-res that came with the rom i flashed. Made edits noted in link above and pasted apk using root explorer. Phone soft booted and ICS transitions work but noticed some things weren't themed anymore (Battery and power options were main ones noticed) I rebooted into recovery and wiped cache and dalvik and flashed ICS theme again. Phone loaded and ICS transitions were gone (Which makes sense since I'm replacing the edited framework apk). Hopefully Overstew adds this into his theme.
*UPDATE* I never done this but I will see if i can extract all files from current framework (With ICS theme applied) to decompiled framework in projects folder. Will see if this works.

These are the steps I did...
I pulled the Framework from the ICS 2.1 Theme & decompile it using ApkTool (I could never get Apk Manager to work properly). Afterwards I did the necessary edits to the framework & then flashed the new framework onto my device. If you want I will post the framework with the ICS transitions baked in.

Thats fine. Looks like it will be included in the next ICS theme update. I can wait. Thanks for the offer though
I have installed Blu Kuban ROM and loving it. However I liked the default color them of stock FF18 or even the GS3. How would I go about getting the original color scheme back to my system settings and ONLY system settings? I'm pretty familiar with system/app and the framework folders... I just dont know what goes where...
Thanks.
It would almost be easier to flash stock FF18 systemui and framework back to the phone than to retheme it and work up from there for the few things you want to change.

Ok, ya that sounds like an idea.. unless there is something inside those files I can copy from the stock to the custom and replace within Systemui and framework..
I really like all the other customizations he made to his ROM.

You're going to lose quite a bit. He has a lot of mods, including the extended toggles if you go with stock. You will have to experiment. You can copy over all the stock icons over to his systemui and framework files from res/drawable-hdpi as a start. More advanced color modding (changing color codes) would be necessary in the decompiled xml files otherwise.
Edit: Don't replace the battery icons though when you copy over the entire contents of the drawable-hdpi.

He has a ROM pretty close to aosp type....never seen another TW based ROM so updated or having so many easy custom installs. But if u want changes, you either need to theme or go with cm9/aokp to install other themes- and there are quite a few to pick from. Do a nand and see what suits you best.

Are there modded toggles out for UVDMD5?
I tried doing it by hand but can't seem to decompile SystemUI.apk.
If there is one already done I would rather just copy the files over.

You can try this if you like, this is a full theme with toggles like you never seen, this is the most graphical,
fancy, colorful and professional theme I have ever seen on a cellphone.
This theme comes with statusbar mod'ed battery, wifi, signalbar and other mod'ed graphics and backgrounds.
Another nice thing about this theme is that it automatically makes a backs up a cwm/twrp flashable zip file
so if you happen not to like it at all, you can revert back to whatever you have now.

SO...with the release of the new Sense 5 Roms for our beloved One X I'm not seeing any themes (I know it's early).
I've had a go at porting a few over by decompiling the systemui.apk, updating the images and recompling as you used to with the original sense 4+ roms but keep losing my status bar!
I'm just starting small at the moment, changing wifi icon, battery, signal etc etc but then I'm going to move onto app icons. The venom themes are epic and it would be awesome to see a few on the sense 5 ui!
Wondering if the geniuses here can shed some light, I haven't found any tutorials or help guides as of yet, hopefully this will start as a decent pool of information,

which tool are you using?
if you are using apktool, have you copied META-INF folder , from the original APK, inside the new one? ( Old signature)
after pushing it to the device, have you set permissions? (rw-r-r--)

ooooo didn't think about the META-INF...I'll give it a shot in the morning.
All the other steps i've done, multiple times. It's as if the systemui.apk doesn't apply during boot so maybe it is the meta file!

yep, apktool doesn't sign the apk, so you need to keep the old signature
Signing systemui.apk is not necessary. I tested many times.
To change pngs(especially patch9 pngs), just copy and paste to the apk with 7-zip if apktool get error or SystemUI FCs.
P.S. Please use the most original apk to modify if it's failed in previous build.

Not bothering with patch9s I hate those things!
For some reason everytime I push a new
SystemUI.apk to my phone, reboot, wipe cache and dalvik (for good measure) it won't apply so I lose the status bar and background etc. Essentially no system ui applies!
It's a pickle, im on ARHD at the moment so will have a go at decompiling! And try again
Funny thing is, someone made a made mod on here already for 1% battery, and even installing that doesn't work!...I'll keep tinkering

unfortunately for me is the same.
i'm trying to add a new item to settings.apk (SuperUser), i have edited all required xmls, added png, recompiled than signed, but no way to make it work.
i have also tried with zipsigner app using platform keys, but no result.. Settings won't show
Success (well a little)
Soooo....I've managed to mod the battery!
I'm going for a sort of Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon 80's style eventually, but this is the first step! Now for the wifi/signal etc. etc.
So this is what I did...
Got an existing circle battery mod with the same naming convention (since I can't be bothered to rename 100 files )
Recoloured them all in photoshop and increased the pixels size to 50 x 50
Deleted the battery icons in the existing SystemUI.apk via 7zip
Added the modified battery icons to the apk
Then pushed to the phone via adb
It automatically rebooted and viola! I may run 'fixed permissions' from recovery to be safe and wipe cache/dalvik to make sure but it's looking good!

hey guys, if you are only changing icons, you don't need to decompile just swap the images by throwing the img in the .apk with ex(7zip) you only need to decompile with xml files and such and if you need a .9 img use the dot9 patcher in sdk then use this" https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/74861217/draw9compiler.zip " to compile it before throwing it in the .apk. to use the compiler throw the .9 patched img into example1 then run the prog at main folder then look in done for compiled img

Almost there...
I'm pretty much there with what I want to do now, status bar sorted (don't know about the clock color yet) also went ahead and did the nav bar icons or prism icon as they call it, and change the home nav bar background to transparent to declutter it a bit.
I'll upload my systemui and prism files once I'm finished so anyone can have a go.
When the Viper team decide to throw a sense 5 rom out the tweaks are going to make everything soooooo much simpler! :good:
