== Background ==
I installed Cyanogen 7.0.3 on my HTC Desire Z, but yesterday my phone indicated that I had removed the SD-card (which is not possible without removing the battery) and since then I can't access the SD-card anymore. (no filesystem, format failed)
In recovery and SPL, I can't access the SD-card either (Recovery can't mount /sdcard, SPL doesn't find the PC10IMG file)
I have tried different SD-cards, all working perfectly in my PC and T-Mobile G1, and I also tried cleaning the contacts, neither works.
So I am quite sure it is a hardware problem with the phone itself.
However, I need to revert to a stock image for my warranty claim, but if I screw something up now, my phone is bricked since I can't upgrade from SD-card anymore.
== Questions ==
I assume CM7 has modified the partition table, since it needs an engineering SPL. Is this correct? If not, why does it need an engineering SPL?
If I use "fastboot update PC10IMG.zip" or Rom Update Utility (RUU), will it revert everything without problem?
Which would you prefer, fastboot or ruu?
The RUU and PC10IMG.zip are for the Vision, is there any difference between the Vision and the Desire Z (which can be detected by the repair service)?
Thanks,
Tom
I guess all I really want to know is if it's safe to use RUU after i've installed CM7. Anyone?

Good morning...this is my first Thread in this forums, so i'd like to say hello to eyerybode...
The need to make an account here came today, as i wanted to flash the baadnwz SenseHD rom onto my HTC Desire (PVT4 - S-ON, HBOOT 0.93).
I used Unrevoked and the modified version of Clockwork Recovery (2.5.1.3)
Now i have got a serious problem.
I have no access to the SD Card, SIM Card does not work (Carrier does not work), no USB access and thus no ADB/Fastboot access.
I read a whole bunch of tutorials on how to unbrick my desire, but they all need USB/ADB/SD support...what should i do?
I can use Windows XP and Mac OS...
Thanks in advance!
UPDATE: SD Support & Carrier works, USB is still down. I am following the guide here in the forums, but i have an O2 Germany Software, so my CID differs form the one shown in the guide...how do i edit the mtd0 correctly, because the final command "/data/flash_image misc /data/mtd0.img" returns an error "new line expected..."
I take it that this was your first time rooting?
Can you switch on your phone? If you can try to do a factory reset in settings.
Have you tried taking out the sd card/sim card and using them on another phone?
You might need to create a goldcard to try and get your phone back to working order. Lots of tutorials on the web.
Side note: Was your rooting process successful? If so, can you go into recovery? Switch off phone, Press Vol Down + Power button.
friedkimchi, thanks for your reply.
I can switch on the phone. it boots up, the only thing that does not work is the usb support.
I was following this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=691639 guide to unbrick it. It gave me back SD Card support, but the commands (cat /sdcard/...etc) do not have any effect on the usb support...
Maybe i am editing the mtd0.img file in the wrong way...my CID is O2__12, so what should i do?

run the o2 RUU again from shipped roms to return it to stock and fix misc
once done start again and use the standard 2.5.0.7 clockwork mod or use amonRA 2.0.1
all other revisions of clockworkmod have problems
if you have s-off you could rename that img to misc.img and do "flastboot flash misc misc.img"
are you o2 DE or o2 uk? i thought its supposed top be o2___01
Hey,
i am on S-ON, so i guess i cannot flash the .img via fastboot...
My carrier is O2 Germany, i already downloaded the latest RUU, but since i have no USB connection, the RUU Utility returns a 171 connection error and gets stuck at the beginning ("rebooting bootloader...or so).
Is there any possibility to flash the content of an RUU via SD Card?
The easiest way would be to reactivate USB support...but this does not work as described in the USB Brick Fix tutorial...
Having difficulty achieving s-off via alpharev 1.8 with my gsm desire and wondering if anyone has any hints!
Previously 3 network branded desire, to which I have done the following:
Goldcard created via revskills
http://www.addictivetips.com/mobile...gold-card-for-htc-desire-without-hex-editing/
rooted with unrevoked 3.2.1
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=788044
SU and busybox running, and Clockworkmod recovery 2.5.0.7 installed via rom manager.
So I have burned the Alpharev 1.8 image to CD and am booting from that OK, it is detecting my phone but says it is unsupported or not recognised - all the fields such as CID: etc are empty. The "goldcard" is in the phone..
Tried recreating the goldcard via above, both from original goldcard.img and by starting over completely and retrieving the CID again. Each time the revskills goldcard tool tells me I have a goldcard!
I have not flashed any new ROMs although I intend to - I wanted to goldcard and s-off before doing this
BRAVO PVT1 SHIP S-ON
HBOOT 0.93.0001
MICROP 031d
RADIO 5.11.05.27
So it seems Alpharev is not able to pick up any information from my phone - is it because I have created the goldcard (and thus debranded and unlocked my phone)?
Do I need to flash a stock rom to get s-off to work?
Do I forget about s-off and just flash a new rom?
Should I see a goldcard.img file on my "goldcard" - I don't see any files right now!
Do i need to downgrade in some way?
Any help appreciated as I am a bit lost!
Can't say about the debranding off your phone, but in regards to just the s-off, i did the following and it worked for me with no problems at all..
You probably already saw this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=805811
1.flashed stock rom (i used the one i backed up right after first root) Because i came from miui rom version that used 2 partitions (ext3) and alpharev recommends using stock roms instead.. Otherwise the process can hang or crash..
2. S-off via virtualbox method (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=8590461&postcount=31)
3.Flashed new rom
4.done
Oh and be sure you mount SD Card (mass storage) and in USB Debugging, when connecting USB and watch the phone's screen, because it may ask for superuser rights.
First time with the virtualbox, it gave me same message about unrecognised device, but then i found out i forgot to mount my SD
Hope this helps a little..

Firstly, do you have USB debugging enabled on your phone? It won't be recognised if you don't.
1. You don't need to flash a stock rom although I've seen recommendatiions that a rooted rom as close to stock as possible gives a better chance of sucess.
2. That is what I did at first. S-off isn't necessary if all you want to do is try out different roms. The only thing I've really used it for is changing the HTC spalsh screen on boot up.
3. No you won't see goldcard.img on the sd card. In fact you won't see any evidence that it is a gold card other than it works.
4. No you don't need to downgrade at all. I S-off'd mine from a rooted froyo 2.29 stock rom

what SD card did you use to make. a goldcard? i tried converting my 8HB stick to a goldcard but even though the goldcardtool tells me it was successfull it was not.

Check that USB debugging is enabled.

Thanks - I definitely had USB debugging on, but to be quite honest I can't remember if I had mass storage or charge only.
I didn't touch the screen of the phone at all - so it may have been sat there waiting for superuser I guess.
I will try again with these two in mind and then move on to Virtualbox if I have no luck there!

Thanks it's an interesting point!
I used the Samsung 4GB card supplied with the phone, it had been freshly formatted to FAT32. The only part I wasn't sure about when formatting was when setting the drive size option (a range of options from 32kb to 1024kb were the choices I think), so I just went with default. Maybe that makes a difference?

OK well USB debugging on - check, SD mounted as disk drive (not charge only) - check, no screen asking for su rights - check.
Still the same result so time for a try of Virtualbox.
Thanks again for your input!
Virtualbox runs fine but still returns the same problem, phone is not recognised!
From doing more reading I think my next step should be backup, wipe, flash rooted stock rom, then try again. I am going to use the rom from this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=773997
Do I flash rom and radio, or rom without radio? My common sense tells me without but confirmation would be good!
Now running Oxygen rom which rocks...
In order to get s-off create a alpharev bootable usb using universal usb installer.....just search how to create usb using this software...

Having read the entire "How to s-off HTC desire" thread, it seems some people followed the procedure and got s-off whilst running oxygen rom, i.e no need to flash stock rom.
Anyone know if that works? Also, should I turn off my screen timeout in case I miss a superuser request? I will be trying the livecd method.
Thank you all!
The live cd method worked fine for me just now, in under 10 minutes I have S-OFF!
I actually just got this to work fine with the CD method - about 8 minutes and I have S-OFF!
The problem must have lain with the stock rom I was left with after creating a goldcard and rooting. Is it possible that this process leaves you with your stock (shipped) rom that has no identity, hence not recognised? Indeed, is that the point of creating the goldcard and I am missing it?
Anyway I post this for anyone else considering the procedure - Alpharev S-OFF 1.8 works fine for a rooted Desire running Oxygen 2.0.1 and Clockworkmod 2.5.0.7. No need to restore a backup - it booted just fine first time after the procedure.
Thanks all for viewing and posting

Mate, Thank you.
I installed Oxygen, ran Revolutionary and away I went. Less than a Minute. Seems my ROMS were causing the issues. No need for a Gold Card and it is a Class 10 Card.
All greetings. I from Russia and English know only at the school level and I apologize for my mistakes in this post. But at Russian specialized forum on android phones to me haven't helped.
I haveHTC desire from T-mobile, has been made root, s-off and stood firmware LeeDroid on base an android 2.2. Suddenly without any reasons phone began to be overloaded spontaneously and after reboot bootinf stop on a picture where there should be logo HTC (at me was logo s-off), could come only in bootloader, in recovery didn't come. I began to try in a mode fastboot to be stitched through EXE firmwires , but everything that tried gave out an error 131 (are incorrect id. Number). Then in bootloader I have pressed to restore factory options, but the problem hasn't dared, now phone already hung on pictures with logo HTC instead of on logo S-OFF. I again began try to put firmwires, and firmwire RUU_Bravo_TMO_UK_1.21.110.4 has started to be stitched, but has taken off with an error 140, since It was impossible to be sewed on lower version, I didn't know it, after that on phone the screen doesn't join, but at inclusion vibration is and in the dispatcher of devices at connection the device is defined as My HTC and if to include with the clamped arrow downwards and the inclusion button it is defined, how bootloader interface. Further I tried to make something through ADB, but fastboot works strange because at me it has turned out to execute only a command fastboot reboot, but despite it in the list of the connected devices (fastboot devices, shell) phone isn't displayed
fastboot-w - it is not carried out with the reason/data allowed
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img - it is not carried out, because can't pass check of signatures (the version different)
fastboot update update.zip - writes:
C:\android-sdk-windows\tools\fastboot update update.zip
Whoops: didn't find expexted signature
read_central_directory_entry failed
error:
C:\android-sdk-windows\tools\
I don't know what else commands to try. I think some more variants which can help me:
1. As I understand now at me the screen brick, I have found the instruction on treatment of it but that it it is necessary to cure goldcard, at me it isn't present and to receive it it is necessary to include phone, it isn't started. Please, if somebody else has a device from T-Mobile, can send CID? Or prompt what insertion to me now
2. Probably insertion approaching my phone, will rescue it. After all my interactions by phone, now on it an official insertion from t-mobajl 2.12.110.2. What insertion to try me to establish (it is better exe)?
3. I very much hope for your councils and the help.
Very much I want to restore a working condition of my phone. All in advance thanks.
You need gold card. It is specific for memory card. Put your card in another android phone and generate cid.
Or else flash a tmob ruu with version no equal to or higher than the current version
Swyped with my Starburst based Desire. Please ignore any typos or grammos.

I'm not sure that I understood you..
Any android phone that can read your memory card should be fine. Once you generate the cid of the card, delete all partitions on it, format it, and then follow the steps for a gold card creation.
Once you make a gold card, you will be able to install the latest wwe ruu. That should solve your previous issue.
Later if you wish to flash the old ruu, you can run teppic74's downgrade tool and then run any tmo ruu.

Whether it is necessary to replace what or files (I mean PB99IMG.zip and PB99IMG.md5) ? Because when I start win-down it is started only deamon and further occurs nothing, as I understand it doesn't see my phone...
Hi,
In an attempt to downgrade from HBOOT 1.03 to Alpharev I followed the tutorial in this forum titled "[S-ON][TUTORIAL] Downgrade from a ROM Hboot 1.03 to a ROM Hboot 0.9". Problem is, when I tried to flash misc, I was not using a gold card and pretty much corrupted the partition. After that my phone is now pretty much useless. No calls can be made, does not pick up my carrier, can't mount SD card. trying to install stock RUU crashes both my PHONE and my COMPUTER.
Things I've tried:
Use stock RUU to flash again ( Crashes computer and phone )
Use fastboot to flash stock ROM.ZIP in RUU ( Says RUU is corrupt )
Use PB99IMG.zip on card, reboot, nothing happens ( says image is corrupt or not found ).
Try restore from nandroid ( can't mount sdcard )
I have the original misc partition on my computer, so if i find a way to restore it I can flash it back.
Anyone have any ideas on how I can fix this? Apart form a walk down to a Telstra dealer and coming back with a new phone?
Thanks =]

Sorry, it's unlockable...
I think you got in usb-brick situation.
I'm not sure if you can flash misc with S-ON define?
try "fastboot flash misc mtd0.img" (you can use your misc or donwload from web (keyword: Quick & dirty HTC Desire mtd0.img generator for usb-bricked devices by stevebrush))
What was the file that you named PB99IMG.zip originally? Was it an HBoot .img, ROM...??
Had a USB Brick a week or so ago, when going CM7 > DG > CM7r2...except in haste, I forgot to flash the r2 after DG and tried to flash ROM. OOOPS!!! lol. When I loaded CM7r2.img and renamed PB99..., I must have loaded the wrong file and got the same response you did. Tried again, got it right this time and phone updated and rebooted, all good.
Sorry, I don't recall exactly what I did to cause the corrupt image, but I know that perserverance fixed it...
Hi guys, wonder if you can help me. I have a HTC Desire (GSM) and rooted it, removed UK O2 branding and putting Froyo (2.2) on it and a new radio and Clockwork Mod Recovery. I messed around - thought I’d bricked it following a dodgy flash, as couldn't boot, get into recovery or anything, with the phone looping at the HTC logo and powering on until I took the battery out.
Thought I’d look at it today and made progress, but still can’t get a RUU to install on it. I can get into Recovery menu via bootloader and I think the SDcard is a goldcard. Issues I have are:
• I can’t flash a RUU onto the phone from running the file through Windows, as I constantly get an Error 170 USB Connection error. I’ve tried reinstalling HTC Sync, trying different versions, tried a different USB cable and port. I’ve tried running HTC Sync as Admin, and in compatibility mode under XP SP 2 and updated the driver in Control Panel and it displays as “My HTC”, nothing works. I am running Windows 7 64 Bit.
• I tried putting the RUU onto the phone as a PB99IMG.zip file and running it through Recovery, but I get a message saying “bad file”
• As soon as I put a file onto the SD card, Ext3 then won’t mount with an error message and I have to repartition the SD card in Windows (Using Mini-tool Partition Wizard). The error I get is "can't mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p2 (File exists) error mounting /sd-ext/!” I can fix it, but soon after it is fixed it reverts back to error it I add any files to root of the SD card to run through Recovery.
I just want to get the phone back working, whether it is branded or unbranded, and whatever RUU I can get working on it. Can anyone advise the steps I can take from here please?
My stats/versions are:
HBoot 0.93.0001
Radio 5.09.00.08
ClockworkMod Recovery v2.5.0.7
S=On
Thanks,
Stewart
Tried downloading the RUU again? I recommend to check md5sum afterwards.

Thanks MatDroid, I've managed to get past the 171 error and now getting a 131 error, saying it is the incorrect ROM. Is there somewhere I can get confirmation of the correct ROM for my device and check MD5sum before loading?
I would look at putting on another recovery, something like 4ext touch. Google it, your current clockwork recovery is pretty dated. Look at a program called android flasher, and you will be able to flash a new recovery through that.
Once you get the new recovery working, there is an option to toggle USB storage in which you can put your custom from on the SD card. Once the custom from is on your SD card, flash it through recovery. Hopefully it should work

you should really look at my guide, you don't flash RUU zip files through recovery.
just realised you are s- on so android flasher won't work. Therefore until you s-off your phone, as mattdroid said you may have a bad download for the ruu. Try downloading ruu again nd running the exe file

Thanks guys I've figured it out and have now succesfully got the phone working.
Issues were:
I was trying to flash the wrong RUU (a 2.09 instead of 2.10) so when flashing it was rejecting as a lower version. Using the right RUU worked
My SDcard wasn't a goldcard - I thought it was but apparently not. I re-created the goldcard and it worked
I was trying to flash from the wrong place - instead of through FastBoot USB I was going into Clockwork Mod and loading files, mucking around with the mountings and things like that
All great now, so thanks again.
