My phone fell approx 6 inches to the floor while the keyboard was slid out and now the screen no longer works. The lights on the keyboard do light up. I cannot get it to light up at all. Several days ago the Red LED notification light stopped working, I do not know if this was a sign of things to come.
Is it possible to unroot the Epic with a broken screen, if so, How?
Would Sprint even check to see if it is rooted given that the problem is based around the screen failure? (Having the external speaker problem to boot)
I believe I have gotten it to boot into the latest version of Clockwork Mod.
*Update* 15 Aug
Went into the Sprint Repair Center and was told that the screen just flat out died right on the spot. Was told that the screen would be replaced along with the speaker provided the parts were in stock. Upon my return I was greeted with a brand new Epic, for which I payed all of ZERO dollars.
You could always hold 1+power to get download mode and Odin to stock.

I don't think would be able to tell that its rooted if they can't see the screen.

It doesn't matter since phone has to replaced under accidenta damage. You will have to pay the $100 deductible. At that point they don't care either way.

after shutting down the phone, just hold the "1" key for about 3 seconds before pressing the power button. You'll know your in download mode if you connect your data cable from your computer to the phone and the com box lights up yellow in odin.
I also vote for better Odin than sorry. You can always say the screen finally bit it when you tried to factory reset.

So I was talking to some fellow geeks in my C# class and decided to root my phone. This site was suggested as the best one to go to.
To my amazement the first thing I saw was a guide w/ software on the first page. I was pulling all nighter, and decided to do that for a break.
So after a half assed attempt at reading the instructions and warnings, I went ahead like a retard and flashed my phone w/ an international OS.
I can't get into download or recovery mode. Holding the buttons down will bring up the Samsung screen, sometimes with the background in the corners is blue too (weird). Same thing if it's plugged in. If the battery is removed it will attempt to power on (the red LED lights up) then powers up.
I've noticed that with thicker cables and using a wall unit instead of the PC the red LED will stay lit longer, giving me hope it can be recovered with a jig.
So from what i've read here, I screwed myself and it's all my fault. So I have two choices
A) Send it into Samsung.
B) Recover it myself with a USB jig. I would rather do this, but im not sure if it's even possible to recover.
C) Also I just got this phone through insurance and haven't sent the old one in yet. It's a Samsung s3 too, just with a cracked face. Anyway I could use the hardware from that?
Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

A jig is worthless here. You could potentially swap the mobo from the cracked screen one but it won't be fun to say the least. So your best bet is sending it to Samsung. Rumor has it they'll fix and return free.
I would suspect that if you cannot get into download mode you are probably screwed after having flashed an international rom. I basically did the same thing with my first s3 except it wouldn't power on at all. I was lucky after an hour sprint couldn't tell that it had been bricked and gave me another one.

Do like a friend did once. Tell the insurance company, they sent you a defective phone..
So figuring what the hell, I cracked open the cases of both S3's. Swapping the MoBo was extremely easy, and it worked like a charm. Fired up immediately. There was some technical difficulty getting the phone recognized on Sprints network.
Will definitely pay closer attention in the future to directions
I have a friend's bone stock incredible 2 and it "totally quit working" on him. "Wen't black and never came back to life."
It has been dropped in a toilet before (clean... haha! Or so he says...) but he pulled the battery as quickly as he could, let it dry out for a few days, and said it worked fine for quite a long time after that. And then it just "quit" one day.
He has a replacement but he says he would like to get his Incredible back.
I told him I would see if there was anything I could do since I'm the "tech guy" around our group of friends.
I plugged in the phone and it does take a charge. After the light turned green indicating full charge, I unplugged the phone and tried to turn it on...
NOTHING.
I read how to boot into fast boot mode and found that you hold the volume down + power buttons at the same time.
When I do this, the phone flashes, very briefly, the fastboot menu screen and then goes black.
If I continue to hold the volume down + power buttons, the fastboot screen will briefly flash about every three seconds.
It flashes so quick that I cannot read any of the options but can see the word flashboot outlined in blue.
Does anybody have any suggestions that I should try before telling my buddy his phone is forever dead?
Much appreciation in advance!!!

I was thinking it was probably hardware related myself. As for the digitizer... Maybe? Who knows? Maybe there'e more to "it just quit working" than my friend is telling me? It would be fairly inexpensive and somewhat easy fix if it were the digitizer. I have replaced digitizers on multiple types of devices.
I'll probably just look up the price of one on eBay and let my buddy know how much they are with a disclaimer that there is absolutely no guarantee that a new digitizer will fix the problem.
Thanks
My phone seems to have some kind of issue. Starting this morning, my phone rebooted twice without me doing much of anything to it - I clicked the power button to check the time, and doing so caused the phone to reboot. I waited for it to reboot, and when I clicked the power button again, it rebooted once more.
Now, whenever I click the power button, the phone won't wake. I can wake the phone and use it normally by pressing the volume keys, but I can't put the phone back to sleep. My phone is still randomly turning off and rebooting as well. Right now, it's off and I can't turn it back on because the power button isn't responding. I have to plug it into the computer/wall to actually turn it on. Does anyone know what's going on?
At first I thought it was a faulty power button, but I've no idea what to think now. I'm running Calks E4GT 3.
For the time being, I'm using Smart Screen Off, which is working great. I can live with this, but my phone is still likely going to reset, and I have no idea why.

I was thinking about it, but I'm certain it's out of warranty. My contract expires this November, so I'm really hoping that's not the case.
It's your phone a year old or older?
Do you still have the original battery?

It is. I've had my phone since November 2011. I do still have the original battery, though the battery is pretty much shot. It had overheated (it was charging underneath some comforters), but a few days later the battery came back on, and I've been using it ever since. I'll get a new battery, but do you think that's what the problem is?

You can definitely try changing the battery, but also if you have insurance on your phone you should be able to call sprint and have them exchange it. I did it not too long ago and I had my phone since day one. I'm positive that my warranty was expired but I still had insurance on it. They sent me another one 2 days later.

To be honest they didn't even charge me..lol. All I did was call sprint, told them that my power button wasn't working, they asked if it had any water damage. I told them it didn't and she asked if I had insurance, told her I did and she simply said no problem, asked for my address and said you'll have another device in 2 to 3 days. Received it in 2 days returned the other one no questions no fee..

I'm most definitely sure it's your power button going broke.
Battery issues usually make your phone flicker like auto brightness is adjusting before shutting off. And so on.
A battery issue wouldn't make your phone reboot by itself when touching the power button.
My friend use to have power button issues like what the OP stated. I told her, her case is causing it(she had one of those cases that block the power button and volume button with rubber) we took the case off left the phone alone for a day and the power button worked correctly. I since have cut out the rubber to her case.
Sorry about the long post
I've known 6 ppl with the E4gT in the past 3 months that have Power button issues. I usually can spot them now.

Seems a lot of people are having power and battery related issues. I've had my e4gt for around a year and my battery is going out. Had 2 ordered today so hopefully no more problems. Lay your battery down flat on the table if it's bulged or misshapen then it's bad. They're only like 10 bucks on ebay.

Sounds like what Im experiencing is the power button issue as welll; phone wakes up on and off by itself, power button doesnt always wake up or put the phone to sleep (or brings up power menu), and random reboots. So assuming this is the case for me too, and with insurance, will I have any issues trying to get it fixed if my phone is rooted? Or just make sure I have unrooted my phone and made stock before I take it to Sprint and Ill have nothing to worry about it then?

It is always best to go back to stock. They will likely charge you $50 for it though so it is actually cheaper to go to http://mobiletechvideos.mybigcommerce.com/samsung-epic-4g-touch-power-button-repair/. No need to go back to stock with them and they do great work.

I believe my power button is going out too. It does the rebooting cycle like others have mentioned and simply rubbing my finger across the button (without pushing it) will cause the phone to turn on and off.
I currently don't have insurance on my phone. Sprint sent out an email a couple of weeks ago about Insurance Open Enrollment. Anyone know if I can enroll now and turn around and take my phone in for repair (unrooted of course)?
Thanks
There was a thread on the power button issue on the Sprint.com forums, and a poster claimed he didnt pay anything for the repair and didnt have insurance (I guess because its apparently a known/common issue now). I figured with the open enrollment it might be worth $8 just to make sure Im covered, although apparently you have to wait 3 days after you signup (Jesus waited 3 days, so I guess I can too huh?). If its a known issue with the phone that is apparently at least somewhat common, I see no reason Id have to pay $50 to have it fixed.
****. This just started happening to me this morning. Phone was working just fine. I am just running stock rooted and now seems like everytime i try to turn off the screen the phone reboots. I have never dropped this phone. I dont have any insurance policy from sprint. Do you think there is anything they will do with this phone?

My reboots started happening earlier this week. I'm running the JB GB08 rooted leaked release. I called Sprint this morning and added the insurance coverage since open enrollment runs through the end of March. I plan on taking the phone into Sprint over the weekend after I reinstall the office ICS release build.
Hello Everyone,
I dropped my White SPH-L710 yesterday which I was using on page plus. It has no scratches, cracks or dents on the glass, however, there is no display and no touch functionality.
When I receive the call, I can hear it ring and everything but cannot answer because the touch isn't working. The screen is dark so there is no display either. Physically it looks fine but I suspect the LCD is a goner. Any help on what I can do to fix this thing. No insurance or warranty here. I'd rather not spend a lot of money on this.
Thanks in advance for the inputs.
I believe this happened to me one time when I had my epic. I freaked for an hour... Then decided to try and Odin a stock tar... Fixed it. If your phone is ringing and working it means your display is jacked. I'm sure there is little you can do. Hopefully you have insurance.
Try to Odin... But attempt to get your phone into download mode using your memory. Volume down + home button + power button.... Wait 5 seconds, press volume up. You should then be good to go. Only advice I have.

I tried that. The display is dead, I can't see anything when booting up, or in the recovery, or in the download mode.

I was thinking of ordering this and trying to work on it myself. Can you point me to the thread, and let me know if this is the right thing to order given the description of my problem. Thanks, much appreciated.

Thanks. I opened it up and checked everything and it did not help. So I guess the only way to fix it is to buy the LCD and digitizer.

Hi everyone,
This is my first post and I hope I won't somehow piss anyone off. I'm just looking for a little advice or guidance.
Device: SPH-D710 Samsung Galaxy S2 on Sprint (CDMA). It was running the latest over the air ICS update. It was not rooted.
Background: Starting about a month ago the phone began to occasionally restart on its own. Also, my clock widget began to disappear randomly, no matter how many times I would put it back on the screen. It would also occasionally crash on resource heavy apps like chrome or facebook. I installed Go Launcher to try to fix the widget problem. This is the only thing out of the ordinary that I've done recently.
Problem: While running an app the phone crashed. I pulled the battery and restarted it. It never booted. The screen remains completely black and the blue LED light stays on. I've tested a different battery, it wasn't the problem. I've plugged it into my computer and it does not see the device. Plugging in the charger turns on the blue light (I can only turn it off by pulling the battery).
Question: I'm pretty sure this phone is bricked but would love confirmation (whether you can confirm or tell me how I can confirm). What I really care about is being able to access the data that was on the phone. Is there any way I can access the data? The sprint store said it would be 50 bucks to look at it and if they can't fix it they would get me a new phone. I really don't care about a new phone. Is there anything that they can do to recover my data that I can't?
Basically, is there anything I can do to access the internal memory files? (Secondary question is can I fix the phone).
Thank you in advance for your input and excuse me if I haven't followed all common etiquette on this forum. (I did search the topic).
Do not send it to sprint. Look up jtag. Send it to a reputable company like mobiletechvideos. They will repair it if it can be brought back. Solid blue light is bricked. Flashing blue light is a bad battery. Goodluck.

It definitely looks promising - if they can fix it, would it be fixed but wiped? My main concern is recovering internal data.
spoke to kyle at mobiletechvideos and he thinks it's an emmc failure since it wasn't during flashing - in which case my saved data is gone forever. anyone disagree or have any other insight? can i save my data?

Mine started the random reboots, and then reboot loops, then couldn't get the screen to turn on...blah blah blah... lots of issues lots of people have seen. It was all because of the power button. It eventually got to where it just didn't work at all, and i was smacking the power button corner of the phone on a table or something to even get it to power on, and having to use the volume rocker wake option to wake the screen. I'm not sure if your issue is the same, but it only cost me $40 to get my power button replaced at a cell phone repair shop locally and took the guy less than 30mins.
Just a suggestion, may not have anything to do with it, but it could save you some money it happened to work. Alternatively you could try smacking the power button corner of the phone on a hard surface a few times and if it is the problem, it might unstick long enough at least know thats what it is.
I'm no expert, and i make no guarantees or promises, just my experience with mine and my wife's phone over the last 2 years...lot's of issues solved by one of three things, power button, usb port, and battery. Good luck!
