[Q] Horrible battery life, Cyanogenmod 7.1.0 RC1 - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

have been running CM 7.1.0 RC1 for many weeks, my battery life was excellent (usually could go a day on half battery, approx). Starting about 3 days ago, my battery life has gotten HORRIBLE. ill be down to 50% within 3 or 4 hours. I have not installed any new apps, i had gmail update recently, but thats it. Current widget shows about 150mA drain at idle. no one application seems to be using an inordinate amount of battery. Rebooted, also wiped delvik cache, and uninstalled facebook since it seems like an app that might do alot of updating. Even with data turned off, its draining 150mA. Really puzzling, since i havent changed anything on my phone since this started happening....

Are you developing something? No?? Then this doesn't belong in the development section...

Wrong Section.

Not true. It could lead to a ban.h

Really sorry, i guess i was thinking "development" because i was using CM, but I was totally thinking of it wrong. I should know what development means. Could a mod please move my thread to q&a? nevermind, done. Thanks rommistress!

I've had the same issues with CM, so I changed to MIUI, still the same issue. I've had the issue for about a week now. My Battery would last about ~20 hours no problem, now I get ~8 with the same use. I charged to 100% with the phone off, turned it on and went to bed, by the time I woke up 7 hours later I was down to 20%. my battery use shows like 60-70% cell standby.

The Search button is a wonderful tool. See this thread in the General section:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1195633
Also, Google is your friend:

http://androidandme.com/2011/08/news/is-t-mobiles-network-killing-your-battery/

Try the latest nightly instead. Callibrate your battery. Turn off wifi, bluetooth, etc when not needed. Use auto-brightness or turn brightness way down. Download juice defender. Buy a bigger battery. Put a shortcut on the desktop for turning stuff off and on. I just did that for using data on my dad's G1.

If you reread my post, you'll see that I was having the same problem with data turned off. I know how to search, after spending 45 mins reading other peoples threads without finding one that matched my symptoms, I started my own thread. I've done the battery calibration, no dice. The problem seems to have stopped, maybe it is somehow related to the tower upgrade or whatever, just didn't make much sense that I would still problems with data and wifi completely turned off. That's for the responses though.

have u got spare parts? open it up and look at battery history and the running vs screen on time.
they should be the same but i can almost guarantee that your phone is still running whilst the screen is off. you need to find out the app which is keeping a wakelock on ur device and delete/change its settings
Ok thanx..will try this

Sorry for the noobish question, but can I compare the two. I went to spare parts and could not see where to compare screen on time vs running.
I recently tried to calibrate y battery, but sinse my screen does not shut off on its own as before. I've aleady checked the screen timers and all is as it was before.
Right now I am @ 4.5 hrs since I unplugged and I am sitting @ 76%, with little use...kinda sucks!!!!

What kinds of widgets do you have running in the background and how often are they pulling data?
Also, how many days have you been on CM 6.1? I upgraded from RC3 and my battery life is much improved. The first two days it was eating a lot as it 'calibrated' itself but now I can easily make it through a full days use with about 40% to spare.
I adjusted my background widgets and how often they pulled data and this really helped my battery life. Also, a poor signal can have VERY ADVERSE affects on battery life. For example, I work in a prison where cell phone reception is awful. If I am at work for 3 hours and leave the phone in 3G mode, I can easily go through 30% battery while the phone tries to find a signal...
Any idea how long will it take the batt tocalibrate???? I did the recalibration process on thurday night, and my battery sucks now.
I'm sitting on 49% only 4 hours unplugged. Before I was getting somewhere around 55-60% at this time interval...
Any ideas?

Alright boys try this. I got over 2 days worth of lifetime with this set up.
-Download SetCPU
Set your profile to 245/245 screen off with priority at 100%.
-Turn brightness to 0%
-Turn GPS off (Go to Settings->Location and Security-> turn off all that GPS crap
-Leave 3G off until you actually need it, then turn it back off after you're done with it
-Leave bluetooth off
-Don't have garbage widgets lying all over the place on 7 homescreens. I only have like 5 widgets spread out on 2 homescreens.
Are you guys running CM 6.1? Cause I am.
Did you guys overclock?
Thank me if it worked out for you =P

Convolution Thanks for the reply, but im more interested in getting a few more hours but with certain level of freedom. I am not all that interested in switching things on and off every time I need them, but I understand what you mean.
I'm looking to get 16 hours of moderate use...that should be plenty. I currently turn off wi-fi and gps since I seldom use gs, and wifi is governed by a profile manager, and it's on only at night.
but setting connection down to 2G, and killing all screen brightness renders the device (IMHO) useless. Also, SetCPU @245 100%, would really hinder the device.
I am running CM6.1 Stable and I am running OC'd @ 1497, but on "On Demand" profile, so to use only as needed.
I still have to try Pershoot's kernel, I think I will flash it tonight to see what happens.
I am also experiencing some oddity with my screen time-out feature...it's not working.....my screen refuses to turn off by itself, I have to lock the device physically for it to take effect....not sure what changed...but the regular parameters are set properly.
I'm getting 2-3 days with the stock WWE ROM that came with the phone. Brightness is set to Auto, but I keep GPS, BT, WiFi and mobile data connection off until I need them. Other than that, I talk about 20-40 mins/day, send out a few texts, listen to the radio, read my feeds and e-mail - pretty much everything the phone was made for.
IMHO, the "calibration" is bullcrap, it's just an impression that it lasts longer afterwards.

Basically the same setup I have in terms of connectivity except for data.....does it really have that much impact on battery life?
What would I missing if I decide to turn data off?
Thanks!
Huge impact. Try it out for a day or two. Or just install Juice Defender, which disables it while the screen is off, turning it on at set intervals (like for 1 min every half hour) to let it sync.
Thanks Keinengel....I'll look up Juice Defender...sounds like the right thing!
i get atleast a day and a half out of my phone and i had it for about a week now. best battery ive had for a while now.
Wow guys...installed juice defender and pershoot's kernel, and only gone 1% in about 2.5 hour....I'll report again tomorrow

[Q] Weird battery drain

Ok guys n gals, here's a puzzle for you all.
A few days ago, I noticed that my standby consumption had gone from around 10 mA to around 40mA using mobile data but with all other radios and GPS off.
For testing purposes I disabled location services through wireless. No effect.
I have tried with several Froyo and Gingerbread ROMs and the results are identical.
I have also tried with different radios, flashed using both fastboot and recovery.
I have used the ROMs without settings or app restore and I haven't installed any other apps than those included in the various ROMs. Additionally, i have tried various kernels.
Using Airplane mode shaves of a couple of mA.
aLogcat isn't showing any weird lines, mostly garbage collections.
I have tried searching far and wide and I have tested freezing various potential culprit apps using titanium backups' freeze function and all the battery calibrations/fixes I have found, but nothing helps.
At the moment I am using Oxygen RC6 with their recommended radio 5.09.05.30_2 and I am still seeing the same issue. The phone has gone from making it almost two days with moderate usage to barely a day with little usage.
The phone is S-OFF and I am using the N1table.
Can anyone please help with this? Apologies if this problem has been described before. I really tried searching before writing tis, but it could be that my search fu is weak.
Have you found a solution? In my case i'm getting ~100mA with the phone sleeping... and I can't seem to fix that.

Yeah, did that. No joy.
Maybe i'm totaly off, but, do you use Facebook app v1.5 ? If so, that's one power drain app because they messed up with new chat feature.
To anyone in Japan with horrible battery life, this might be helpful!
Solution for battery drain:
Just found this japanese guy who had the same problem with an Oxygen rom.
http://d.hatena.ne.jp/majadroid/20101223/1293094736
He explains what he changed in build.prop and has packaged it as an update here:
http://www.multiupload.com/5EAK6IUSQR
I am flashing it now and will report problems (or success I hope) in a while. According to the OP he managed to get to 1~2% hour drain which is very promising.
EDIT: It seems to have worked!!! I am back to about 10mA with screen off!
Thanks for all the replies.
The last thing I tried was a total restore using a HTC RUU, so I am now S-ON
This didn't help much though, even if I was down to 27 mA on some occasions, maybe that's normal for HTC roms
I have rooted it again but not S-OFFed and I am running the latest CM7 build (#12).
@TheGhost1233: I have tried the wifi sleep policy.
@m4dm4n123: No I don't use facebook app. Additionally, I have tried removing as many apps as possible only keeping some google apps and currentwidget.
@slyn4ice: Thanks for the tip. I have just flashed it but I am not noticing any big difference. I am seeing a few mA:s reduction, but still far from 5-10 mA in standby... I'll let it run for a day and see if it improves.
I am still open for suggestions...

[Q] Battery lasts only only 6 hrs with WiFi, 10 hrs on standby.

My battery drains within 6 hrs of WiFi usage. No heavy downloading or updating, (keeping auto sync off).
With out WiFi, the phone lasts for hardly 10-12hrs. Mobile data seem to last longer than wifi.
I am charging for more than 10hrs to make sure battery is full and there be no calibration error.
The issue started happening after I installed Sunabh ROM. I use to wonder why there is a "switch of WiFi notification" in Sunabh ROM, every time there is no wifi connection established. Now I know why.
What could be done to solve the issue ?. I have tried other AOSP, stock based ROMs after that but couldn't solve the problem.
Please suggest methods changing kernel, radio or may be calibration methods.
P.S. I wonder, why there is still no standard guide to improve battery life in this forum . There must be certain a software set that would provide maximum battery life (assuming average hours of use).

I use the "SenseOnFire" rom and my wifi is on all the time, when i dont use the phone that much the battery lasts 36h or more. but i noticed when i use the 3g my battery drains faster.
P.S. I had your problem when i used JokerDROID 4.2, the exact same thing
Try this out....it will help you on your present rom..
1. Go to recovery and wipe battery stats.
2. Open market and search and install battery calibrator.
3. Plug on charging and charge it to 100% and then open battery calibration app and click on battery calibration while keeping the charger plugged
4.after when the app says calibration done..remove your charger plug..and you are ready to go.. but after this step..let it discharge it to 0% and then charge it to 100% without break.. hope it works for you.
This improved my battery life to about 4-5 hour..

The other thing you can do is try reflashing latest radio. Unless you don't have an a3335 phone. Also try entering *#*#4636#*#* then in phone information scroll down then in " set preffered network type to " GSM auto prl ". It will save some battery.

There seems to be a misdirection in the entire forum on how to improve the performance of the phone. I hope a senior member consolidates and prepares a "How to improve your phone" post rather than a list of all ROMs and other useless shopping lists.
My phone runs 3 days now, it took only 1 minute of action. Cheers to non-dev guy who posted the method.

Was that directed at me? Sorry, I am not at your beck and call here. and I am not obligated to do anything for you. Help yourself.
If you feel there is need for a "how to improve Your phone" thread then crack on and make one because (sarcasm) you're obviously smarter than us all, one thing you forgot though is that every phone is different, yes some things work for all but some don't so even a thread like this might still be redundant for you!
Most people on here post suggestions from there own experiences when trying to solve problems for themselves, they may be correct they may not, you should be thankful to these people even if they're suggestions weren't right for you. And as for the list of roms and the shopping list I bet that thread has helped thousands of people solve problems, which is a damn sight more than you've done in this forum so jog on mate!!

And about the thread you mentioned, dude each of us have personal interests. So as we customize our phones. Its different for every one. What you can do is roam around the forum and take what suits you the best.

Battery life, not so great

Well, I thought the battery life on my T989D (Canadian version) would be better after installing a ROM (Darkside EVO3, Venom ROM) but after about an hour of usage (phone calls, texting, no video, no WiFi, no GPS).
I replaced it with a new battery and still it's bad.

Is this your first flash? Ive have flashed plenty of times, battery life, no matter what ROM, cannot be judged the first, second or third day of usage. Give it five days, and report back. When I used darkside, I was getting 30 hours, with moderate use. Give it time, use your battery till it dies, and charge it fully while off. You will see a difference.
On my fourth day, but I just had to reinstall the ROM..
Now I'm using my carriers ROM, done by Derek Jay.
Hopefully it had something to do with it, not sure.

Koooba, i just posted in another thread about battery issues, check it out here. I been running Derek's Roms since Digital Warfare and never any really issues with his Rom. i would suggest to calibrate the battery, turn off sync on all apps (Facebook is one of the worst) and keep brightness down to a 20% or whatever is comfortable for you. No joke, i get 17 hrs avg on his roms. People been known to get 24hrs+ on his roms and those are the TMo version...Telus is suppose to have be even better.

one of the ways these guys are getting such good battery life is by turning off data. that's a huge one.
btw - i'm on a D as well, and I get consistently just under 3 hours screen on time, and i charge every night. usually end with about 15% left.
it could be due to the horrible signal in some of my university buildings... or the fact that i just leave wifi on all day. but I haven't really been able to crack that barrier.
it will always take about a week for your kernel and phone to settle down.

Most battery drains are from apps constantly running in the background. Use better battery stats and gsam battery monitor and I guarantee after a day of usage, you will track down what is killing it. Widgets, auto syncing of apps and Google are the biggest culprits of battery drain.

Because I have every possible option off...
syncing, GPS, bluetooth, the only data I have on is the basic network data I would think I need to receive text msgs.

Yeah I got all that off when I don't use it. If I get no signal, I put it on airplane mode. I found even if you turn off data and you are in a building with poor signal or none it kills it, even with data off. Do you use any third party apps for text, phone or anything. What launcher do you use? Facebook on manual sync, emails too?
What does app sucker say is draining?

That's crazy then, because I'm LUCKY if I can squeeze out 5-6 hours and I turn off EVERYTHING.
I even frosted GTalk through Titanium, I don't have use Facebook, so I disable that app altogether.
Something definitely has to be wrong with my phone then.

All syncing is off, GPS is off as well.
Has to be an issue with my phone and ICS, because it originally came with Gingerbread.

Should i hard reset?

no matter what phone ive ever had, ive never gotten battery life like aot of you guys do. i dont know how you do IT but ive given up trying.. Even . even with roms i cant. i am on stock wiht note 2 and it is so bad that i can unplug and not touch my phone and it goes to 90 percent with the screen off within 20 minutes . i have sync gps wireless and bluetooth off. and my screen goes black in 10 seconds. one thing is when i go to running programs it shows alot so i use the broom to clean it and then when i check back to ruining programs a minute after, there are lots of apps open again. even things like word with friends that of course wouldn't be open if i didn't open it. have you heard of this/. or is it normal? would you suggest a hard reset? any suggestions would be appreciated. im not as savvy with flashing roms on here as i was with early phones so id prefer to say on stock. thanks so much
jeff
Phones aren't the same each one is different. What battery performance I get may not be the same as you as our chips etc may run slightly different.
With that said, the biggest influence over battery performance is the kernel. I run saber kernel 42.4 and get 1% loss per hour with the screen off.
Of course you can try that kernel and see how it works for you. There are a lot of tips threads in these forums but I would advise you to turn off tts any and all sounds on your phone, by that I mean keyboard sounds etc.
Then you need to download better battery stats and greenify. The first will tell you what apps are eating your battery and the second will let you force close the app until you restart it.

+1 for greenify. I would also look at xposed boot manager and recciever stop. Grenify puts programs to sleep and the other 2 stop them starting in the first place. You have to be rooted but you will definitely notice the difference

Autostarts app will allegedly stop them from starting as well.
