Is it safe to draw on my phone with a Sharpie? - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

As long as I keep away from the screen, will I run into any problems?

Oh my goodness, why you want to draw on it is beyond me, but I guess so. Maybe try a test spot and make sure it won't bleed. Make me feel better and tell me your last name is Picasso.
Sent from my T-mobile G2 using Tapatalk

Yes its fine. Just try not to draw in the micro usb port lol

I just got to know why the hell you would want to draw on the phone with a marker.
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA Premium App

if you really wanna draw on it.. get yourself a full body skin and draw on that skin. sharpies have the ability to smudge and look like total **** when you get sweaty hands on it.
and trust me.. you will get sweaty hands when you use that phone alot (or any phone for that matter)

If your phone becomes too hot (say on a summer day in your pants pocket), it is possible that the ink will no longer be "permanent" and rub off onto your pants.
Also, any exposure to organic solvents will allow the Sharpie to bleed. If you do not understand what I mean by organic solvents, read this article.

Should be fine I got my battery cover autographed and it eventually just rubbed off anyway so no there shouldn't be a problem and besides permanent markers aren't really permanent anyway

Yes, of course. As long as you don't leave them on your skin.

Shocks from screen when charging

Hi not sure if anyone else has had this when charging my desire the screen seems to become electrically charged.
Hi, I've always experienced this with my desire, not directly from the screen but from the outer edge of the screen at the brushed steel bezel. I used to get this issue with my Powerbook, and also my Macbook too!
hi
i am not having this kind of things.
i would return my phone if i had
I was getting a lot of static shocks from touching things after holding my Desire a while back. Tried to avoid doing same now just in case it's the phone that is doing this.
thanks for the replys have got orange to send me a new one hopefully tomorrow
For those that can't feel a slight tingle, lightly run your finger up and down the edge of the phone when charging. its nothing to worry about, I get it when in bed with an electric blanket and lightly touch a brick wall !

I notice it more along the top front of the phone - around the ear piece. I've noticed this on a lot of electron gadgets, so I wouldn't be too worried about it.
Yer i noticed this, it stayed with me for a while aswell!
i was downstairs with the mrs, stroked her arm and it was like
a vibration in my fingers, but get it from the purple bit around the screen
i've noticed ive been shocking a LOT of people recently?
could it actually be the phone?
if so..
LOL!

Odd touch screen behavior

Well,i noticed some odd behavior the other day with my phone laying on my desk at work. It was completely unresponsive. So I was just fooling around, laying the phone on my bed, same thing. I realized that unless my other hand is touching the phone, the screen is unresponsive. Think this is some sort of grounding issue? It isn't a big deal, but I have never had this problem on other phones. Anyone else have this problem? Try sitting it flat on a desk without touching the body of the phone and see if the touch screen functions.
Sent from my HTC Vision
Dont quote me on this but i read on how touch screens work and it basicly like you said the screen has a charge and when you touch it it slightly changes the charge and thats how the cpu monitors the change and tells the screen to act the way it does. But i am not sure why the screen gets less responsive when your not holding it in your hand. It happens with my G2 and my G1 so nothing new but maybe some one can actually explain what is going on.
Fear the static
The answer is quite simple; it's cooler outside so there is less humidity in the air. With lower humidity you have a higher static charge on your body (hence why you can zap someone more easily in the winter than the summer). Since the screen is capacitive (relies on small changes in the charge on the top surface to know where you are touching it) and you have a larger charge on your body, the digitizer sees it more like you bringing three or four fingers in close proximity to one spot. The reason putting both hands on it works is because you now give the digitizer a reference charge to distinguish and ignore.
TL;DR - Winter static makes screen think you are ham-fisting it.
Solution - use hand lotion to help dissipate your body's static charge from your fingertips, just don't use so much that you end up leaving greasy streaks on your screen. If you do, wipe the excess off of your hands with paper towels until you don't have lint tracks in your hand, TP is good for this.

I 2nd that statement and a +1 on solution with lotion! lol
Now i will begin to tell my gf how the Screen isnt HEAT sensitive and why during the winter time with cold hands it responds differently.
i did notice this behavior the other day, and to be perfectly honest it scared the tar out of me, but then as soon as i picked the phone up it was fine again. i guess you really do learn something new every day, i always thought the capacitive screen reacted to heat, but i guess not.

Does all capasitive screens react like this are some phones just more prone to it?

Electricity in the camera?

Well i was on XDA scolling through just looking at stuff and i was holding my phone at the same time and the camera was against my face and i felt like i cut my lip or something. Then i put my lip back on the titanium or whatever part (metal part around the camera) and felt some electricity feeling shocking my lip! Can anyone explain what this probably is?
Question......how the hell do u browse xda and have the camera attached to your lip lol??? Really want to know

Current leak, you should get a replacement. The part isn't mounted correctly and the bezel or something inside is shorting the part.
My other guess is that you're imagination is kicking in.

It sounds to me, there is a small little short which the camera is right near the nuclear powered wave flux capacitor and the eon anti-gravity generator is somehow causing an interdimenional portal energy discharge.
Just be careful.

Hahaha best answer ever xD thx 4 the laugh, needed it
N ye bro, considerin the bezel isn't conductive, simply put either u actually did scrape ur lip on sumthin,
Or this is just a random occurrence, the entire notion doesn't seem plausible to me, simply put
If there was a short it would effect the camera to say the least and technicly with the systems
Powersaving, the camera is off when not In use, therefore no current is possible, second note
These phones are designed rather ingeniously as the parts are molded/soldered right to the board lol
Only possible way for a short would b if a part became "unhitched" from the board,
This CAN happen from large drops etc, BUT with a case its not really an issue, without a case, screen is always the first to go. Therefore if ur still using ur display, that's not the issue, if u can use ur camera fine, ITS not the issue,
Simply put, either u had ur phone plugged in to a different then standard charger and wasn't grounded properly (plausible, heres y, the discharge would probably come from the most conductive surface, with this device that is around the camera) if that is the case use the stock charger as that's not good for the device anyways
Other plausible solution:
U were on crack xD
Hope this answered ur question
Peace
*EDIT

just had 2 hit thanks button on ye bro that laugh was awesome peace

I love when people don't know what their talking about and reply anyways.. one, its not glass, its a plastic, 2 if it was glass, do u realize how quick they would break? 3 look at ur camera, its like less then 1mm from the outside of the case, now think, that camera is encased in plastic, thin nonetheless, but completely metal internally, technicly, if there was a charge this IS the place it would come from, and couldn't be diacharged unless a conductive surface was close enough for the current to "jump" through, like a finger or lip, in this sense..
Fourth but not leastt, if they don't use electricity, how can I take pics wit it? U gut me confused now..

Maybe the electricity dont comes from the device, maybe comes from your own body. Aire you heard about the central nervous system? Perhaps the impact detone it.

Not really, believe what u want, I take my frustration out on idiocy when I see it.
Ur right it doesn't change the facts.
Its a lens, not technicly a "sensor" thes would be your motion/gps/proximity/magnetic field seonsors.
Its not covered by glass its actually a small rounded peice of glass, called a lens, the "cap" is plastic.
And you are in fact correct, it is insulated, but at ths same time its meant to protect against standard voltages when need be, ur cameras not constantly leaking energy here...
My point, if u actually took the time to read, it IS possible for the device to build up access current, but not technicly plausible.
The easiest method that would come to mind would be using an incorrect charger that left the device not grounded properly.
If the buildup WAS present, considerig the design of the phone it probably would go unnoticed to the user.
The easiest spot for the current to leak through WOULD IN FACT BE around the camera.
Even with it insulated if the discharge was great enough, It could potentially jump to the nearest conductive surface, even if the insulation dampened the charge enough if the correct object was used a charge could be detected. In this sense, a lip, which if you knew anything about anatomy you would know there are a massive ammount of nerve endings in the mouth/ lips, along with the moisture, would make it MORE then sensitive to feel a current.
here's a test.go stick a 9v battery on ur tongue c how it feels.
My origional statement remains unchanged. Ur entitled to your opinion, but I don't wanna hear it, ok?

HTC One x screen shattered

Hi Guys,
First post post and its a sad one.
Word of warning to some of you guys with the one x.
I had some major screen issues when i first got my device (preordered) and i spoke to htc about the issues i was having flickering, green lines, touch issues and all the heat that the phone was generating.
I was in the cinema the other night and was texting during the copious and irrelevant adverts that accompany any film and i turned to speak to my friend and when i pressed the unlock button i discovered my screen had shattered.
I dont know wether this was a one off manufacturing error or wether it was related to the issues i was having before but a word of warning as i dont want it happening to someone else as it has taken me a while to get a new phone issued. Mine will be going to HTC for investigation no doubt. Thankfully my retailer was reasonable in the end, and when they found out i had already reported a screen fault to HTC the imediately offered a swap out.
Its not a shatter from any particular point, it just seemed to shatter from the middle out.
Before anyone comments saying you must have pressed too hard, i use my fingers for pointing and touching and dont yell "by the power of greyskull" before using my phone.
So if you are still having banding, or non responsive screen issues of anykind be careful. I hope this is a one off, but if it hapens to someone else at least you know your not the only one.
Pressure from the pocket maybe. Ive worked in the mobile industry for 8 years and have never known a screen to pop so to speak. Very strange. Could be an assembly issue with the glass slightly over sized but would still need a knock to set it off.

another cracked screen
My screen cracked when I performed a rather bad magic trick by putting my phone in my front pocket and when I took it out the screen was cracked. To say I was disappointed would be a bit of a understatement.
On contacting HTC they now say that as I unlocked the boot loader not only do I have to pay for a new screen ( I would argue any phone that cant be put in a pocket of your trousers with out cracking is not fit for purpose ) but worse as I had unlocked the bootloader that I would have to pay for a new mother board as well.
I would understand having to pay for a new screen but having to pay for a new motherboard and screen does not sit well with me. If they had said that I would have pay for the screen and done nothing else on the phone and that I would have had no warranty I would have been ok with that
mox: thankyou for implying im deluded, i will take your kind words onboard
I didnt actually put my phone back in my pocket, i have never dropped it and had a full case on it from the word go. I cant see how or why this would happen and would hope its a one off an the build quality seems good and after the updates the phone works really well.
Im hoping this was a one in a million situation that wont occur for anyone else, but i thought just in case, HTC couldnt deny it had happened before.

It's much more likely that you applied too much pressure on the screen by accidentally pressing it against the arm rest or something else nearby while you were distracted.
Ockham's razor, the glass isn't under any load stress so it's impossible for it to suddenly fracture. And if it did, you would have heard a loud cracking noise. Pressure must have been applied. Either that or you dropped it and now you're trolling. Sorry, but I really find it difficult to believe in spontaneous shattering of a phone's screen...

Gorilla Glass looking good, hahahaha
If it took a lot of pressure to shatter a demo glass of Gorilla Glass on a board, then either you put way too much pressure, or way too much heat damaged the glass causing it to shatter.

I'm sure there's a lot of people who won't believe this story. They key, however, to communicating online is this. Apply these simple rules before you post and you'll be doing very well.
1) does what I'm about to say need to be said (does it benefit anyone)?
2) does it need to be said right now?
3) does is need to be said by me?
If the answer to any of these is "no" then probably best not to say it at all.
If someone says something you don't believe to be true but it is not hurting anyone I would generally suggest letting it go. just my twopen'th.

If you meant you scratched your screen without knowing for a fact you placed a screen protector on it yourself AFTER taking off the "I'm the ONE you've been waiting for" sticker, then no, you don't have a screen protector.
Easiest way to check is to get a piece of tape, tape it on the screen and peel.

Screen Cracked Today :(

So....
I've NEVER dropped any of my phones, ever, as long as I've had cell phones. Well, dropped and it actually hit the ground. I've dropped this damn phone like 4x already, I think partially to do with it being so smooth and "slippery" to the hand.
Anyway, I dropped it once from about 6 feet in the air directly on the screen and NOTHING happened at all (except some very very minor dings to the frame itself) and light scratches to the screen protector. Today, I was trying to pull it out of my pocket at work when it slipped and fell (from about 2 feet from the ground) landing on the right side of the phone. My right hand (phone sits in right pocket) is in a brace due to a stress fracture I received at work, so when it slipped I couldn't catch it. I watched it fall, which was the worst moment ever lol. Since my work pants have slanted pockets, it fell behind me so I couldn't even attempt to put my foot under it to stop the impact.
Anyway, as I picked it up I honestly didn't expect to see anything. I pick it up, turn it over and it looks like there is a piece of hair right along the frame in the shape of a sideways "U". I went to brush it off and realized it had cracked!
It's a very small and almost non noticeable crack JUST before the digitalizer starts but I know it's there so it bothers me. I showed a few guys at work and nobody noticed it until I pointed it out.
Anyway, think its worth looking into getting fixed or just stick it out because it's so minor?
*sorry picture is so crappy, wife has a Lumia 710...camera sucks.

I have to agree though, if its doable for you, get it fixed. Once compromised like that its just gonna get worse most likely. Even just setting it down or bumping into something while its in your pocket could make it much worse.

Why mine is in an otter box ^-^
But I personally would just throw a case on it to prevent further cracking. Doesn't look too horrible from your picture. But as others already mentioned, it will crack even more easily since it's already started.
That's a known issue with the s 3. The screen is lifted a hair from the bezel. So the bezel bends into the glass at the edge (weakest point in glass) where other devices usually bend over the glass.
But good luck to whatever you decide!

Yeah it's not bad at all. And remember you can replace just the glass too. But i would wait for it to be more messed up before doing that

Slap a good case on it and it should be fine for now at least.
Let's just hope that you don't drop it again to further increase the cracking.
An OtterBox Defender Case might be a good idea.
Very bulky, kind of pricey, but it will offer you the protection that you need.
Personally id be worried about further damage as is. Obviously the glass is weakened already, and while it may seem ok to wait until its worse before fixing, i have to disagree as im pretty sure this also makes the digitizer more vulnerable to damage as well.
How often have you seen or heard about devices that had a cracked screen causing the touch capabilities to break as well? One more drop or bump into the corner of a table where that crack is and you may not get anymore response at all.
I just think it potentially could turn into a much more expensive repair if not taken care of soon. Just not sure id personally want to risk it.
Its just my opinion is all.

red you could just take it to tmo? or call Samsung it has to be under warranty but hey they'll do it and no screws up guaranteed. ad it will cost more than a do it your self. i saw somewhere that Verizon did for 100 with insurance, i assume tmo would close to that
Radio Shack has a service to replace your screen for $100. You would be without your phone for a couple of days, however.
I highly recommend the Otterbox Defender, and put all of my phones in one.
In March, while doing some climbing, I fell about 30 ft then tumbled down the side of a mountain. I had a Droid X in my pocket (in it's Defender), and the only damage to the phone was to the camera lens. Everything else about the phone was groovy. I was not in such great shape, as this was in the Arizona desert mountains, so there was no cushy landing whatsoever.
Defender FTW!

Sorry, i guess i just assumed we were talking about going by one of the diy guides i saw here not long ago. Pretty sure they had instructions for replacing only the glass, but anyway, if you have the full protection plan then it doesnt matter how bad its damaged. I believe the price about a month ago was $130.

we were but then i thought what if red messed up something by accident like we all might, wouldn't that void his warranty? if it didnt then im all in for diy, thats the only reason i said the tmo thing for safety measure. also red looked it up on ebay blue one with tools was 28 dollars and from usa.
Ok, i gotcha. I could be wrong but if you have the full protection plan i was under the impression that you could pretty much do anything and get a replacement. So if im right you can attempt the fix diy style and if unsuccessful then get it replaced. I would double check me on that though!

well i checked it here http://www.t-mobile.com/shop/addons...setProtection&tp=Svc_Sub_EqpmntProtnInsurance. and i assume it would fall under the damage one its pretty vague which is good for red. so your probably right doc
Yeah, I was considering the DIY route (its like $25 on eBay but you have to break your screen off basically which scares the sh*t out of me).
I do have the full insurance. I may have to go to T-Mobile just to see how much it would cost. I don't have the extra money, just got my car out of the shop. If anything, if the insurance covers it and isn't very much, I could just tough it out until it gets worse (if it does) and THEN take it in to the store for work.
