Did anyone remove the shatter proof sheet from the phone? How does it feel, is it similiar to other touch phones then (the only smartphone I have except arc is Samsung Galaxy 551)? I hate it and would gladly remove it, I just don't know how's phone doing without it.
I can only tell you about my play, i removed the shatter proof screen protector, screen looks much brighter, and auto brightness works better, the mineral glass is hard to scratch and finger swipes are easer without the protector

I assume so we have the same screens
so the arc glass is very much scratch resistant?
@jtdc
The screen is mineral glass which is harder to scratch but by no means is it scratch proof. I still advise all to use a screen protector

Removing the protector would increase legibility in sunlight actually.
Has anyone used a privacy guard on this phone?

I agree with the above statement. I dropped my Arc face-down recently (from a height of barely a foot and a half) and, when I retrieved it off of the floor, I found the glass to have developed three, small, dot-like "cracks" on it. I'd suggest you be careful with handling the phone, because one thing the glass isn't is scratch-resistant.
Are we talking about the pre-fitted protector ?
I think this thread is talking about the factory pre-fitted protector?
If so, I too have wondered about removing it. I previously used to have an HD2, (without screen protector) and that glass was still pristine after living in my pocket (until I went swimming with it.... actually the glass is still perfect).
I don't like screen protectors, so my thought was to leave the Arc protector on until it became it became annoying (it's gots some fine haze-like scratches now, but I can still live with it) and then remove it and see how the sony glass behaves.
What worried me is why the protector was factory fitted - did Sony not trust their glass tech?
I don't think its that Sony doesn't trust their glass, but rather how they decided to achieve the best looking screen possible.
What I think is, had they not used a shatter proof sheet they would have to make the glass stronger (which usually means thicker) and that would result in a less vibrant looking screen.
So choosing this current design, they're able to get a vibrant looking screen (with thinner glass) while keeping the strength of the glass high enough with the support of the shatter proof sheet.
When you think about how the Arc outperforms most other phones in direct sunlight, it kind of supports this hypothesis.

Again, unless you'd already removed the factory-fitted screen protector, it's extremely likely that it's the protector that has the marks on it, not the screen itself.
Mine got dropped face down onto gravel and was scratched to buggery. I removed the protector (quite a job to get the thing off) and the screen underneath was pristine.
Cant really say that it's any brighter than it was, but it's certainly less fingerprinty than before.

my question is "how to remove it"??
me also want to remove shatter proof screen protector, but it very hard attached, difficult to remove.. -.-"
did we mention the same shatter proof screen protector? the one that we get when we buy our new ARC?? (mine is ARC S, but I think the shatter protector isn't different.. )
Thx for the reply, I'm really appreciate ^_^
BEWARE !!!
For extra protection i installed Amzer Matte finish screen protector over the shatter proof layer.
Dont remove the factory fitted shatter proof layer.
For your information if you remove the Shatter Proof layer then Accidently drop your phone and break the "Touch Digitizer" (Which is the part that breaks often) remember that you need to change the "Display " also because in Arc "Touch Digitizer & Display " comes as a single module. So why waste your hard earned money
If you want to verify, you can visit my post to see the Official Arc Service Manual

I think if you drop the phone, digitiser will break anyway, and the shatter-proof layer will just keep the pieces together. It's not a break-proof layer.
Also, installing 2 screen protectors on a phone is like... well... let's just say it takes away all the pleasure
(of using the awesome Arc screen).

It's not "broke like a glass".
It broke because IT IS made of glass.
In case you don't know, glass breaks on impact often.
^ What he said, but to reiterate:
Super AMOLED is only the type of screen producing the images. It is then covered in protective glass, the same as used on the front of the iPhone 4 and most capacitive smartphones.
It doesn't matter whether it's LCD, SLCD, AMOLED or Super AMOLED, they are all then covered in glass with the capacitive touch surface in it. And yes, glass breaks when dropped.
So LCD, AMOLED, etc are the type of pixels used, NOT the type of glass protecting them.
For almost all phones it's wise to get a good case to protect your phone from falls. The new glass type used on the Galaxy S known as 'gorilla' glass simply makes it much harder to scratch, but it will still shatter if hit from the side.
Do they break often you ask.
I'm truly sorry to hear what happened to your phone, but your question would be the same as how often does one drop their phones?
This if borderline trolling imho...

Perhaps it's you who did something different to your SGS?
I've had mine for about one and a half month and has no scratches or anything on it. But sure, I haven't thrown it into the ground either.

Super Amoled is different from other screens so far. In Super Amoled, the touch sensor is integrated into the Amoled screen this means that the touch sensor is just 0.01mm thin and the glass panel on top of the Sgs is just to protect the Super Amoled underneath.
If you look closely, you can see that there is almost no gap at all between the Super Amoled and the glass panel, unlike on the motorola milestone, there was a huge air gap between the two.

same here, screen died of htc HD2 before i had any scratch or something, Galaxy S for one week and a screen long scratch.... bump
You could have any X device for Y days/months/years and that doesn't make the Galaxy any more or less scratch resistant. If it's scratched already, then usually it's the user's fault. They don't exactly scratch themselves.
I remember reapplying a new screen protector on my ipod once because of a few niggling air bubbles. The old one hadn't had any scratches after over a year's use. So I put the new one perfectly, and within the same day, I managed to somehow get a mad scratch on the new protector. It happens.
I have my Magic about 3 months. I don't use protector. I don't have any single mini scratch. Legend and hd2 have real glass on screen. You can find scratch test on youtube.

Thanks Guys for the update....
The SGS does not use gorilla glass, its just plain glass that can be easily scratched, for those not using any screen protectors try to use a bright light source like an LED flashlight and point it to your screen, you'ed be surprised at the amount of scratches it has.. the test vid above is unable to show it cause of the weak light source they used.
Ive had mine quite a while and im not really one for looking after phones and i havent got a mark on it yet
My phone is still unscratched too.
don't samsung own a large part of the company that makes gorilla glass? Or they are one of their clients
with lots of android phone in the market nowadays that i've used, i can safely say this SGS is the easiest to get scratch, screen and other parts (vs nexus one, desire, milestone, x10, wildfire, and err iphone 4 )
but still, not everything is perfect and i like SGS the most compared to other android phones. so i have no choice but to use some silly looking silicon case to protect the back cover and the front plastic chrome border.

The guy in the phone shop told me I didn't need a screen protector with my note as it has gorilla glass, do you really needed one?
I do enjoy using the stylus a lot
Sent from a galaxy note far far away
I was of the same opinion that SGN doesnt need a screen protector.
Now I have minor scratches on my screen (after 4 months of using it), they are visible when you put device under light.
Just to clarify I keep my right pocket free from anything (keys, coins, etc), plus I have a flip cover. Despite all of this I incurred scratches on the screen.
My advice is keep the screen protector, dont neglect it.
i always have a screen protector
its an expensive device, even if it is 1/million chance of getting a scratch, a screen protector is only a couple of £'s
I use my S-Pen over a matte screen protector and it's fine once you get used to the texture. It's always going to be different if it's not the screen you are touching.
I can't deny the super nice feel of using the stylus or even fingers on the screen itself. But yeah, like panyan said, the SGN is quite expensive, so I'd rather get used to the screen protector than risk scratches. And other people tend to use my phone a lot for games and stuff --- :| so that adds security.
However, if you use your phone very differently, like say: You never put it in your pocket and you have a flip cover, and you make sure to leave it on a flat surface when not in use --- I think you can make do without a protector. )
Yes, you do need a screen protector, all it takes is one grain of sand in your pocket to scratch your screen, gorilla glass or not it will scratch.
Gorilla glass is just scratch resistant not scratch proof.
Now fitting one without getting dust/dirt trapped underneath is another thing, I normally but a multi-pack as i know i am going to ruin a few.
An note owner recommend these though i have not tried them myself as i got a one with my gel case and i manged to fit it fist time perfect .
A nice generic guide to fitting a screen protector.
John.
You don't need screen protector. My screen is perfect after half-year using. I hate screen protectors, I feel it like a condom...
I usually fit one, have done to my other devices, have to agree some of them restrict you, have tried media devils on my wife's iPad, it gave you a tip to add few drops of water, then wipe clean this reduces the static which makes the dust attract, works a treat, have just ordered a 6 pack, interesting that gorilla glass is not as tough as they suggest

I have been using this spray to clean all my notebooks, tablets, phones for a couple of years and it works great, and it`s cheap.
Just spray a small amount on a clean cloth and not directly on the screen

There are two different things:
- Toughness
- Hardness
Toughness is how much you can bend something by before it breaks, think of a ruler, you can bend it into a big curve before it snaps -> good toughness
Glass on the other hand, the slightest knock (a tiny bend in the material), and it shatters -> bad toughness
Hardness is the surface resistance; so you can use a sharp knife on a ruler and it will cut into it -> low hardness
But with glass youd have to push alot harder for it to cut into it -> high hardness
Now we've got those simple analogies out of the way: Gorilla Glass is designed to extremely TOUGH, not hard, but TOUGH.
This means you can take a piece of Gorilla Glass and load the thing up will lots of weight and it will bend and bend and bend and finally breaks alot later than normal glass would
BUT, Gorilla Glass is no better than standard glass in a HARDNESS test, so you can still easily scratch the surface
(on the Corning site they claim that the surface has an "armour" but when looking through the technical material properties, the hardness test is inconclusive of this advantage)
Have you seen this Gorilla Glass 2 Video.

in that video the guy is applying a load to the glass and the glass is supported at the edge by a metal ring - so it is a flexural bending test
he says at the beginning that it is the industry standard strength test, which is neither toughness or hardness (just to confuse things )
basically this reinforces my point that gorilla glass is designed to bend under load and not crack - thanks for that video
EDIT: haha! just seen the end of that video:
normal soda lime - 27 pounds
fortified soda lime - 55 pounds
1mm GG2 - +120lbs
0.8mm GG2 - +120lbs
he could only get up to 120lbs of force and then claimed "20% thinner for the same performance" LLLOOOOLLLL
DUDE - youve got to take the samples to failure before you make performance claims!
It might be rated for up to 120lbs to manufactures even though it most likely can take more, but as with everything there might be strength variation between different batches of glass, plus it would look bad if it broke.
120lbs = 8st 8lb that`s a lot of weight.
John.

Definitely go with a screen protector. Worst case scenario you scratch the screen protector and feel relieved that it wasn't the screen!
I use the glas.t which has saved my girlfriends iphone from drops twice (plus a bunch of scratches) and my Note is still in pristine condition.
The arguments against a screen protector are null when you consider that there is a real risk of scratching your screen and a replacement means £££.
Sent from my GT-N7000 using XDA
nope i had my note for nearly 2month now and its still in mint condition, people on here claim to have scratched there screen using the s pen but i cant see how thats possible its designed to work on the glass, i am getting a oleophobic screen protector tho just incase and for peace of mind, but imo my gs2 and my g-note screens are tough as nails and i think even without a protector they will remain in mint condition.
I applied a screen protector on my iPhone 3gs before I touched it with my bare hands... I took it off a month after and after that I never used screen protectors again.
Sure, it ended up with a lil scratch which was only visible with a strong light and certain angle.
But on my old HD2 or Desire HD I never got a scratch - I always used a leather case for them.
On my new Galaxy note I wont use a screen protector either - fitted a nice Flip Cover first thing I did.
Usability -> Protection
You'll still sell the phone after 6 or 12 months why not enjoy it as much as you can.
Like another user said; it's like using a condom. Agreed, I hate condoms.
If you end up getting a screen protector, I would suggest Zaag. Extremely durable. In fact, they are almost impossible to break.

Uhm, I had 3 scratches after putting it in my jeans pocket (it was the only thing in there, no keys or anything else).
The Note scratches easier than my old Nokia 5800 plastic phone and my Cheap hannspad tegra 2 tablet (which by the way has 1 scratch after ~1.5 years and I've been dropping it, throwing it, treating it like crap.. but this thing doesn't want to die

I did. I had my op3 since July and I never used cases or screen protectors. I did dropped it a couple of times, the aluminium developed some light scuffs, and on the display you could only see some fine scratches. In January my gf dropped it, and it shattered the glass. I got it repaired at one plus service centre, and they sent it back with a screen protector. Now I also ordered a pretty case, just in case... I don't want it to happen again. A really tough phone overall

I dropped my phone 6 f***** inches off the ground WITH a screen protector and no case. Shattered the glass accross the whole top of the phone. It all depends on what material and how it falls. This phone has 2.5d glass meaning the front glass protrudes a tiny bit and it curves to the edges. If you drop it on any sort of surface that is harder than glass like cement, asphalt or ceramic, it will shattered the screen if it lands on any corner where the glass touches first.
Now how the heck you can use this thing without a case blows my mind, I can not hold this phone without a case, it literally slips out of my hand.

Yeah, it's pretty slippery. But, the added bulk of case just didn't cut it. And I've this urge to look at the phone's design, appreciate it and show off (lol!) every now and then. And stories like this make me skeptical and vulnerable. I also haven't found a good case to go with it.
I'm fully naked and it s amazing . It s so slim and without screen protector is so much better. That screen protector is not even covering full screen..It makes the experience very unpleasant
Well i am a fan of skins , so that's what I've got with a silicone sleeve over that and my default screen protector that came with the phone , it would be my luck to remove the protector and a stone finds its way in my pocket ...
I have big amounts of love for this phone! Coming from a moto g play after smashing my opo it is a phenomenal upgrade and with the dbrand concrete skin its a sexy phone haha but the screen scratches way too easily for my liking and that's with me being careful but its fine/micro scratches that appear under certain light now it's not gonna make me not use it but I feel it could have been better.
I'm also a fan of skins. I've got a carbon fiber dbrand skin and also had my screen replaced by the one plus service center so I'm using the pre installed screen protector that came with the new screen. The dbrand skin really helps with grip. I just can't use a case the added bulk just ruins the experience of using the device for me. Don't know why I've always been like that with my devices. I hate cases. OCD I guess.

Without any protection here. I dont mind if my phone got scratches or something. I use my phones so long that i couldnt sell them anyway when i stop using them cause its not worth anything any more.
So why should i hide my nice metal body phone and some plastic stuff? No, thx
Got a transparant case with a dbrand. Also a screen protector since I was getting allot of scratches..
i got only a case around the back. from time to time i saw a few deeper scratches on my screen. i took care all the time to not scratch my screen, but i still found some scratches. I removed them with polish for car windshields. They are completely gone now.
Hello S8 & S8+ owners,
In search for a good screen protector we almost tried everything available at the market, the favorite for me so far was the one from Spigen as it is compatible with almost all the covers you can purchase, but it's life is short and get a lot of marks and scratches over the days
So i decided to try the Official Screen Protector

The Package has 2 screen protectors, once you hold it you can feel that it's a hybrid between film and tempered glass, it's hard and flexible at the same time
If you are used to apply the old film screen protector using a credit card pushing the air at same time you applying the screen protector you will get a great result, no one at the youtube videos managed to apply it with the lowest amount of air bubbles
something great about it that the air bubbles fade away within one or two days , i guess it has also a self healing mechanism because while i was trying to force the air bubbles out of it there was a lines or scratches under it but its all gone now and it's very clear
it's touch is nice and you can feel that your finger is sliding on it , very close to the original glass
It's a little bit thick so Samsung called it for External Shock and i guess it will do a good job regarding the minor shocks.
The thing i don't like about it that it's not compatible with spigen cases or any other case that cover a part of screen , it works very fine with covers like Nillkin Frosted Shield
I guess it's the best option available there if you use your phone without cover or with a very slim cover and i guess it will be compatible with Samsung original covers but i don't have any to try
This actually looks good, shame it isn't case friendly.
I've had this on for about a month. Best option I've come across so far. I just trimmed the top and bottom about ⅛" before installing so it wouldn't interfere with cases

It's a really good , i think it's the best one ever , if it was a little bit smaller and covers compatible will be the dream that came true for curved screens

No worries appreciate anyway
I have this one installed on mine too. All good except that there's a white border around it as if it's dust stuck underneath.

A screwdriver might not scratch your screen, but a single grain of sand will scratch your screen. Go ahead and try it.

Hello,
does the original screen protector any good? i ask because i have one in my phone and it´s already 2 little marks on the screen protector. Most of the time i use the s view stand cover and the LED cover, and a few times the silocone cover.
I thought this screen protector was a against little scratches, but as far as i can see it´s not like that. i don´t belive this is so strong as samsung claim
Will it protect the screen from cracking in an accidental drop?

I bought the Ounier Full Coverage Bubble-Free Screen Protector as it was one of the first brands to come up when searching for screen protectors for Samsung Galaxy S9. My phone is fairly new and I needed to have it fully protected first before I include it in my busy daily routine. I’m the kind of person who chooses convenience over price, but as this product was recommended by a friend (for his S8), I gave it a chance. Besides, It’s really great that the pack has 2 screen protectors; the easier to change, the better. I’ve also had bad experiences with other screen protectors for my old phones as they sometimes hinder with some of the phone’s features, like the double tap, the sensors, etc. Since my friend can’t recall any troubles at all with this protector, this eased my mind a bit with what it had to offer.
I’ve always admired how my friend’s phone looked so seamless and smooth, it always fooled me thinking that his screen protector came with the phone when he purchased it. To my surprise, he installed it himself. Now I’m not a bad friend, but this guy can get excruciatingly stupid at times. I thought if someone as dense as him had managed to somehow not mess up with wet installation, how hard can it be?
I got the screen protectors, a squeegee, a tiny piece of cloth, a manual, and a small bottle spray solution. I’m the old-fashioned type, I never even knew that “wet installation” is actually a thing if not for my buddy. All these items looked so weird to me. I’ll never understand how people come up with this stuff but if it works, then it's fine with me.
The installation was a bit hard for me. Even with my old phones that had the typical stick-on screen protectors, I always have someone else do it or have it pre-installed before I buy the phone. Still, I’m really just doing this task because I was inspired by my friend, and I wanted to rise up to the challenge.
Upon getting ready, I tried to clean the phone. I realized I forgot to put some solution on the cloth, that’s why I was struggling to really make the phone dust-free. Reading through the instructions, I can’t believe how wet my phone would be while doing this. I mean, is it really supposed to be like that? Watching a video I found online helped me clear up the confusion. It really is a sloppy process.
I tried keeping the screen protector down when I already applied the solution. I think I put too much of the solution which made everything slide where I didn’t want them to. I was getting impatient and thinking I can start over with the second protector. Luckily, the squeegee worked wonders. It was so satisfying to watch the bubbles go away while I was clearing them. What bothered me though, is the edges took some time to stick to the screen. I needed to press the edges down with my palm repeatedly until it stuck into place. My friend suggested to let the film set for at least 5-10 minutes so it would stick and using a hairdryer can really come in handy as it won't adhere if it is too wet, especially on the edges.
I almost messed up too when I failed to align the corners where they should be (camera, sensors, speakers). Good thing was that the screen protector kept moving around. Just be careful not to press down with the squeegee too hard as the film stretches quite easily. You wouldn’t want a deformed screen protector, of course. If you’re having trouble clearing the bubbles, take your time.
Once looking crisp and free from air bubbles, I left it for a solid 30 minutes to sit. I went back to it to make sure I had all sides pressed firmly down. Thinking I was done at last, the manual said it’s important to leave it for a few hours. It was also stated that the bubbles will gradually disappear as soon as the moisture underneath the film completely dried up. It might take overnight or a day for some but bottom line is just trust the manufacturer that it would work. I impatiently left it overnight and checked it at the crack of dawn.
Here comes the testing part. There were no swiping and tapping issues after placing the film. I was also worried that rainbow colors will be visible since it was a wet installation, but there were none! I don't know if it's a bad idea but I intentionally scratched it with my nails to see if it would leave a mark. The following day, the scratch was still there but already faded and was hardly noticeable. I was amazed and I’m counting on it to make my phone look brand new for a long time.
Translucent, sleek, sexy — that’s exactly how my phone screen looked. I almost feel bad that I underestimated the installation part as I almost wanted to throw the first screen protector I used. If done correctly and patiently, you will have a premium looking phone. Don’t rush it if you don’t want to regret it. So for you guys who are afraid of the “wet installation”, give it a try. It was a bit difficult for me, but I’ll do it again if it means maintaining the high quality of my Samsung Galaxy S9. And besides, the S9
I had used multiple screen protectors for my pricey Z fold 3, but none of them fit properly. Within a few folds, it just peels off or bubbles shoot out. This annoys me and makes me feel uneasy when using it since I should be more cautious with my z fold while gaming because I am worried of scratching it with my nails?
in reading some of the samsung forums, the samsung reps have described that if you use a 3rd party screen protector over the factory installed PET layer, it will void the warranty if you have issues down the road and attempt to make a claim. I'm just quoting what i've read though so no expert here. Maybe the PET is the reason it's not staying put well. Maybe you would be better off using the S-pen on the inner display if you are worried about scratches. i know it's not ideal for some though having to pull that out all the time with the inner display.
jst use PET stock layer and get it replaced when it has scratches. Watch youtube durabilitty test. He scratched the PET layer with nails and knifes, and screen was perfect after peeling it off.
good video

It does not void warranty. What they say is if you damage screen removing the protector its not covered under warranty.

Thanks for sharing man. I'd seen them, but in practice, it's crucial to handle the Z Fold 3 with caution while it's in your hands.

Yeah, I too had the same thought for the PET layer.
I purchased S pen with the fold, but I also play games on a regular basis, therefore I'm searching for screen protectors for additional protection. If this isn't a foldable device, I'd use temper glass and never worry about such things.

Despite having seen it, I have some concerns about screens, and the Samsung Care Plus is rather expensive, so I planned to purchase it within a month.
Seriously, I don't want to replace the screen on a regular basis, which is why I'm looking for screen protectors. Also, they have limited claims for those purchases

Yeah, I had seen the plan but Samsung doesn't describe those?

Use Sunglass pouch for extra protection
My Fold2 had scratches on both screen protectors from daily interactions. My Fold3 has none. The inner screen protector feels more like glass this time around and is doing really well at staying free of scratches. I'm a heavy Note user and am mostly utilizing the inner screen. Very pleased this time around. Have owned my Fold3 for over a month now, zero scratches.

if you install a 3rd party screen protector over the existing one, and somehow the UTG breaks bc of the increased pressure while folding, i'd imagine it would be your fault and not covered under warranty.
why not trust that the existing screen protector will protect the phone? it feels good and doesn't peel, if it becomes too scratched then i would say think about replacing it. otherwise, just enjoy the device and try not to scratch it!

I agree. I never once said to remove the protector and still have mine. I am just letting people know if they remove the protector. Warranty is not voided.

Never be concerned about an existing screen protector. I reviewed two of my colleague's z fold3, one of them is a heavy user. If you had removed or disturbed the existing screen protector and looking for a new one, the gadgetshield screen protector is a good option

Ok then, I will look over them
At what point do scratches on the screen become noticeable to the point where it's bothersome?
I ask simply because I use tempered glass on my iPhones because I hate micro scratches and want best resale.
Well lo and behold my screen protector got a nice deep scratch about 12 mm long near the middle of the screen. I noticed it because my nail dragging on it was clicking noticeably. Looking at the screen is was completely un detectable! It would take a LOT of scratches or physical cracking before it would be annoying, right?
That's when I change the protector when it gets cracked or dinged from a fall. Otherwise...

I thought this thread was dead, what you're saying is true and the screen protector does get scratches and makes the screen look blurry at that point I will change it. But with tempered glass, it breaks soon to be replaced so I was fed up with it on my previous devices. Anyway, this is a foldable device so I installed the film protector which heals the scratches on it, I know it is not believable but it works!!

Yes, I replaced it with a Gadagetshieldz film screen protector and it is better than the factory protector because it can self-heal the scratches and is good with the fingerprint sensor too!
