Hello,
Why isnt it possible to use SDCRAM as sort of RAM in android? same as VISA/7 Using ReadyBoost to expand the ram with an USB disk on keys?
thanks!
Why would you want that?
since you only use flash based memory anyway: that's called swaping
And is Swap enabled in all froyo roms today?

But why would you need it? You have 512MB of RAM, with a clean boot you have around 200-220MB of it free for whatever you want to do with it. Not enough for you?

No. Smartphones =/= PCs. And if you are really out of space for a short amount of time, unneeded processes get killed automatically. Swap was only really needed on the G1 but definitely not on the Desire.

No, that's a bit too much even for a game... unless the code has memory leaks. With so much RAM it'd make more sense to use ramdisk (but who knows for what good use)

RamDisk could be insane for 3d gaming as then the textures would have fast extraction means less delay in rendering....
What Readyboost is NOT
Hey folks. I've only recently discovered Readyboost as I'm primarily a Linux guy. I got all hot and bothered about it immediately as well as it is (despite Microsofts constant onslaught of horrific failures) an absolutely brilliant and elegant technology/idea.
HOWEVER!!!
Nearly everyone is confused about what RB actually does, so I thought I'd take a minute to explain.
ReadyBoost is NOT swap. NOT SWAP!, not swap.
Swap is not something to get excited about, it is a last resort for when you're out of RAM and it's excruciatingly slow. In the land of IT, one of the first things we check for when a server is experiencing horrible performance, is "IS THIS MACHINE SWAPPING". Everyone's gotta learn that swap, while it is more useful than "not enough memory" it is nor more useful than utilizing the memory you already have, and it will always result in poor performance.
ReadyBoost is an additional disc cache for small, non-sequential reads/writes. It works with your existing FS cache but is faster in some cases because FLASH has a much lower seek time. Most FLASH chips have a seek time of <1ms while most rotational discs have a seek time of around 8ms. This adds up on a large number of small non-sequential r/w.
ReadyBoost takes any caching operations which fit it's strength profile (small, non-sequential) and offloads them to your FLASH device. This can increase load speed of some files/application dramatically (2-20x faster).
So, when someone asks you if they can use Readyboost because they don't have enough memory, please, take a moment to explain that RB is not swap, but is in fact a supplementary disc cache for small, non-sequential reads and writes.
That said, I haven't had time to dig into the question of whether or not RB would benefit Linux FS's.
I know this is a really old thread but I just wanted to put my two cents in. Memory boosting apps like ReadyBoost do have a viable purpose. That is keeping older hardware viable as minimum specs increase. There is an Android app that is equivilant to ReadyBoost called Roehsoft RAM Expander. There are mixed reviews for its performance but that is to be expected. If this app helps my aging 8227_Demo head unit work well enough for me to not replace it I will update this post.
I am an Eris user, soon to be DINC2 owner at the end of this week. I've been reading through the threads here getting ready for my purchase and it has been very informative.
I searched the DINC2 forums and did not see this mentioned. Has anyone tried zepplinrox' V6 Supercharger script on the DINC2? I'm not going to regurgitate his post verbatim, but it is a memory optimizer. It was introduced to me over on the Eris forums, in the GSB ROM thread. It really makes a difference on the Eris, but I'm not sure how much difference it would make on the DINC2.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=991276
He also has another script called 3G Turbocharger. This will probably make a difference on the DINC2. According to zepplinrox, "the 3g script reconfigures the build.prob and kernel to change the speed settings to a better enhanced setting. Think of it like a TCP optimizer on windows." On my phone I have noticed an increase in speed surfing the web, downloading apps and in other 3g activities. It may be placebo, but it does seem faster. If nothing else, I do plan to add this to my DINC2 when I get it.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=15948434#post15948434
There is also a Kernel Tweaks script on the above link as well. I am using it too, but not sure what performance gains I am getting.
Per zepplinrox' post, this should work on stock and rooted ROMS.
I am by no means an expert on this, so don't shoot me if this is in the wrong forum, not valid on the DINC2, or a repost. Just trying to pass along something that works well for me.
For now those scripts are useless for phone that came preloaded with GB 2.3.3.....no root no turbo.
This sounds interesting to me, I am rooted, would it work?

This wouldn't really benefit the Inc2. The Eris was a very memory limited device designed to run Android 1.5. Upgrading beyond this was pushing the Eris to its limits, and in some cases, beyond. Running newer versions of Android would make memory management more difficult because of the higher memory requirements and the very limited memory.
The Inc2 has one of the bigger pools of memory available for Android devices. It has 768mb of total RAM when many current generation devices are getting 512mb (others are either getting 768mb or 1gb). Unless you are running a LOT of background apps, or somehow managed to find apps that require massive amounts of memory, this is plenty of room.
What does it do? It tunes memory settings and task manager. That's pretty much it. It could have an effect on the Inc2, but I wouldn't really consider it a necessity.
Edit: BTW, my previous device was an Eris.
Well, Desire HD users with 768mb of ram enjoy improvements.
It even improves performance of an Atrix with 1gb or ram...
So it probably will help.
So "It tunes memory settings and task manager" is an understatement.
It revamps the whole memory thing

Actually, I think these will work without root. I think the only drawback without root is the scripts do not stick on boot so you have to re-run on each boot/reboot.

It may not, but zepplinrox posted above about the Desire HD with similar RAM and the Atrix with more that reported improvements.
Whether you use the Supercharger script or not, the 3G Turbo is definitely worth trying. Again, it may be placebo, but I think my up/download speeds are faster after the script. Here is a post with some info on speed improvements with the script.

Hello all.
I'm trying to get the most of my defy.
Currently using cyanogenmod 7, over clocked to 1.2ghz.
I have now started using the v6 supercharger script as hoping its not placebo but seems to be working a lot better. Used option 9.
Does anyone else use the v6 script and what option did you go for?
Also do you have any other tweeks for making the defy smoother or faster?
Have uploaded a screenshot of my benchmark.
V6 original thread - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=991276
I'm using the latest V6 RC 3.2, with option 6 (ledded) (now I'm testing option 7), and option 13 (bulitproof launcher). I installed nitro lag nullifier. I also use kak script, and 3G turbocharge script. Overall it has big improvement, my defy is much faster and more responsive. I have only a little lag in scrolling the launcher when I use live wallpaper, btw I'm using blur launcher, and MS2Ginger 2.1 rom, overclocked to 1.2 Ghz. My scores are around 2700 - 2800.
Thanks a few things to look up.

Also OCed to 1.2ghz

What's it do?
It makes your phone FAST... super snappy with better multitasking!
It rearranges and fixes the OOM Groupings and Priorites and lowmemorykiller values.
So basically, it's a COMPLETE MEMORY MANAGEMENT FIX!
It's the ONLY one of it's kind
NO LAUNCHER REDRAWS, faster than ever, multitasking is better... why?
Because it works with the lowmemorykiller and letting it work the way it's meant to work.
Also, because of the rearrangement, it works the same on all roms!
The problem with using minfree tweakers like AMM or AKMO is that it doesn't work the same on all roms.
Secondary apps may be in slot 3 on some roms but in slot 5 in others!
That's why you hear people comment "I tried AKMO but it didn't do anything..."
Most likely it didn't do anything because the apps weren't sitting where they were expected to be.
So fasten your seat belts and enjoy the ride!
Super Charge... Makes it impossible to kill other apps & dats the downfall

Try also thunderbolt's script... much better than super charger v6 to me & doesn't interfere with cm7 killing app function, of long press on back button

Anyone still using this script or the thunderbolt script on Cm.7.1.0-11-defy?
I'm trying to figure out if people see a noticeable improvement before taking the leap myself. Better synthetic scores don't really matter to me.
I may be interested too, what are the downsides of these, and is there a way of undoing it?

I've been using it to, and the phone does feel smoother. The nitro lagg nullier makes the difference on my defy.
(I used it in conjunction with the multitasking setting if i'm not mistaken)
It's buttery smooth on Option 6 - "Balanced."
Minimal modded to my defy seeing it was my everyday phone. Now that I have the defy+ I'm going hands in the the defy been reading and reading now I would like input from other users.
So.....
What modes are best for the defy?
Make it faster, responsive with no lags or glitches.
I'm on cm 7.2 froyo kernel thinking bout upgrading to gb kernel. Any suggestions?

As i have been chasing the holy grail in my Defy+ for the last weeks, i have been thru some settings and my own observation around the SuperCharger is that it totally screwed up atleast my already overclocked Defy+. I was running scores around 2400-2500 in Quadrant and after installing SC it really felt slow and a new test in Quadrant really proved what i have been feeling, the score was around 1800. Notice then that my first setting in SC was a fullblown 1000bhp setting (dont remember what the highest number is), so i thought i had shot myself in the foot and overloaded things, tuned it down to a 512bhp settings (somewhere in the middle) and did a new test, still was the same score in Quadrant. After some anger management i uninstalled it and ran a new Quadrant test, this time i scored 2200. I dont know if i managed to screw anything up in SC but thats my 2 cents of an observation.
Stock MIUI straight out of the archive gave me 26000 - 25000 on quadrant...
after installing all of my guff it naturally got lower scores, but - speed doesn't necessarily equate to smoothness...
I then went to linpack.apk which allows you to compare your scores against, well - your scores...
As I turned up the OC the ph got quicker - but not smoother (if you get my drift)...
So, on my personalized MIUI I pasted in Juwe11's ram script & Samsungs Loopysmoothness script... they helped with the smoothness I was after... (+enabling JIT in SetSvel - makes a diff)...
Now I'm running WajKIUI hybrid... battery seems to drain quicker, but it's silky smooth... speed is similar to MIUI OC'ed @ 1.2GHz...

That must be one hell of a Defy u got there if u managed to score around 25,000 points in
Quadrant
For some reason the defy phones in some way seems to score higher than the +, god knows why.
I tried to run a Sonic the hedgehog game with my best settings it ran really smooth and the handling seemed better than ever. But more smoothness never hurt as long as it doesnt decrease speed. I rather run like that and get a better battery
Do u know if those scripts work on the +?

Which Sonic game ?
Sonic the Hedgehog 4 Episode 1 ?
Herpderp Defy.
I've read about lag issues on this forum, but I wasn't sure if it meant the same thing as I am experiencing. For me, no matter what ROM or Kernel, although it is better with Bullet on lagfree or performance, I get micro-stuttering (hiccuping in otherwise perfectly smooth motion) almost contstantly, but kind of in intervals.
It happens while scrolling, it happens during games, it happens no matter which home replacement I use. I don't think its a GPU performance issue because I've had a couple phones less powerful than this one that didn't do this. Is this the way everyone's phone is, or did I just get a defective one?

Yeah Mine Does This As Well Try V6 Supercharger Mod It Helps Alot
I have the same thing...it seems like its a issue with 2d graphics
I wonder why that is... it's not like the Adreno in our phones has less 2d performance than the Tegra or the SGX540 @ 200 Mhz. Hopefully we can get an update to fix this.
it would help if people complaining about this micro lag can show a video of what is happening, as it games and apps runs smooth like butter in my phone
check there aren't too many unnecessary left over apps hanging in the background, make sure when you exit an app, it's actually exited, quit
simply closing or changing to another screen / app will leave the other apps running in the background
that's the only times i get those micro lags
this phone runs sooooo smooth, even with multiple apps running simultaneously, even under heavy file access
in my old Nexus S it would have halted the phone until the file copy process finished, before i can even run a game while waiting for the copy to finish
only under those situations i get micro lags, otherwise this phone is incredibly smooth when there's nothing else running in the background
I don't really have a way to capture it on video or I would. For me, it happens to the same extent whether I have no apps open or a ton. It seems like either some people are more sensitive to it, or some people got bad phones like with the blobs.
I suppose I might be experiencing "micro stuttering" but only if I really pay attention. Yeah, this phone is smooth like butter. Then again, i'm coming from an Eris. I experience no lag though. Everything is smooth. now i'm running bomba-deery-air or whatever it's called with the jugs kernal so I could OC it to 1.8 but it was already fast. I was just being greedy. Just putting my experience out there. Have had the phone for a couple weeks now.

Okay, I just started experiencing real lag, albeit momentary lag, not like any lag I've experienced on any windows machine or device I've ever used, while downloading a couple torrents in the background. But considering we've only got a gig of ram that's not a bad right? I'm still not complaining. Phone still kicks [email protected]%! As far as I'm concerned.

i experience skipping or micro stutter on home screen .
If you take your finger and slide to right or left like your scrolling to next home screen. first start very very slow. then speed up a tad then try fast ..
you will see skipping or stuttering of the icons at medium scroll speed.
i dont have a camera to photograph it.
the att galaxy s2 doesnt do this. its like a ghosting like gaming on a 5 ms led monitor a 2ms moniter reduces it.
guys i have this problem too, then i start playing with the voltage and now i'm getting to the point where its completely gone. Undervolt is generally good but some phone use more voltage than other.
also using system tuner pro mess around with the memory a little, under "visible application" i see twlauncher is there, i increase it to 24mb and it seems to help.. again i'm not 100% sure if these are the two thing that cause it but it helps alot and i also have live wallpaper too and now my stuff is running smooth.
This problem only happens when you try to use a 3rd party launcher, if you are using the stock touchwiz launcher, you will say, "these people are stupid and have no idea what they are talking about, my phones smooth as butter" this is really unfortunate because I love using ADW Launcher EX, but just use the stock launcher until ice cream sandwich comes out. I don't notice these micro studders at all anywhere else throughout the phone, this phone is bomb and anyone who says otherwise is clueless. I have the white one and love it. Its beautiful. Just can't wait for samsung to fix this lil problem in 3rd party launchers.
If you are talking about this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1414929
flash a skyrocket rom, itll be waaaay better, i promise
I'm using ADW and experiencing no stuttering, micro or otherwise.
I've tried adw, ics, and go launcher ex. All of them suffer from the same problems on the more popular roms, although adw is the least problematic. I don't have this problem anymore since I installed domination rom 2.0. Games, apps, scrolling... no more stuttering... it's as smooth as an iPhone 4s unless the launcher rebooted... and even then it's only a few seconds till it's back to it's creamy state of tranquility
My SGSII HercuDom needs more w00t. It always needs more w00t!
Most people are blind to it. As a user of all platforms I can tell you there is significant stuttering on my SGS2 with any ROM.
So I can flash skyrocket roms and kernels?
I just wanna double check before I go flashing something lol. I wanna see if I can notice a difference.

If it is in the T989 forum it will work on your phone if it is the T989.
Hi,
i was wondering which effects the Supercharger script may have on the Desire. I am currently on Sandvolt's ICS Rom, and I read about some people using this. As I don't know that much about technical details of memory management and the original thread on it is a bit confusing, i'd like to know if the Rom really runs faster with it, if it is just some placebo effect or if it even might make the system more unstable.
Do you mean the zRam function in the evervolv toolbox. If so then i tried 18% and used the antutu benchmark before (2783 score with 0%) and after (2648 score with 18%) by just changing the percentage setting. So no cigar for zRam.
I don't know much about the technical nitty gritty of ROMs, Kernels, Mem management etc either, but I can say that yes, Supercharger really does work. I installed on my phone yesterday and, although the changes are subtle and hard to quantify, there is definitely a smoothness to my phone now that wasn't there before.
If you are expecting stars to fall from the sky, or your fingers to burn from the blazing heat of the extra speed, you will be disappointed. But you will notice everything running just that little more fluidly.
Thanks, i just wanted to know if it works and didn't expect it to make my Desire as fast as todays high-end phones. Which options do you recommend?

I tried it, i think it was option 6 (not sure and can't give it a tru now).
It worked, I did not see much more smoothness as it already was smooth, but it stopped random reboot.
